ਕਿਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬਾਹ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
kinhee kahi-aa baah baho bhaa-ee.
someone says that I have the support of many brothers,
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੜੇ ਭਰਾ ਹਨ, ਮੇਰੇ ਬੜੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਹਨ।
ਕੋਈ ਕਹੈ ਮੈ ਧਨਹਿ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
ko-ee kahai mai dhaneh pasaaraa.
Someone says that I have vast amount of wealth.
ਕੋਈ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਧਨ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
mohi deen har har aaDhaaraa. ||4||
But I, the helpless one, depend only on God’s support. ||4||
ਪਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਘੂਘਰ ਨਿਰਤਿ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
kinhee ghooghar nirat karaa-ee.
Wearing ankle bells, someone dances in front of the idols.
ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ (ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਅੱਗੇ) ਨਾਚ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਕਿਨਹੂ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਮਾਲਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
kinhoo varat naym maalaa paa-ee.
Someone observes fasts and wears rosaries.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ (ਗਲ ਵਿਚ) ਮਾਲਾ ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਨੇਮ ਧਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਗੋਪੀ ਚੰਦਨ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
kinhee tilak gopee chandan laa-i-aa.
Someone applies a ceremonial mark of special mud to his forehead.
ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ (ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ) ਗੋਪੀ ਚੰਦਨ ਦਾ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੫॥
mohi deen har har har Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||5||
But I, the helpless one, always remember God with loving devotion. ||5||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਤਾਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੫॥
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਸਿਧ ਬਹੁ ਚੇਟਕ ਲਾਏ ॥
kinhee siDh baho chaytak laa-ay.
Someone holds many magic shows using the miraculous powers of the Siddhas.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਨਾਟਕ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਥਾਟ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
kinhee bhaykh baho thaat banaa-ay.
Someone wears various religious robes to establish his place of authority.
ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਾਧੂਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਈ ਭੇਖ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ,
ਕਿਨਹੀ ਤੰਤ ਮੰਤ ਬਹੁ ਖੇਵਾ ॥
kinhee tant mant baho khayvaa.
Someone indulges in many plays of spells and mantras.
ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਤੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੁਕਾਨ ਚਲਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
mohi deen har har har sayvaa. ||6||
But I, the helpless one, engage only in the devotional worship of God. ||6||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੬॥
ਕੋਈ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਪੰਡਿਤ ॥
ko-ee chatur kahaavai pandit.
Someone proclaims himself a wise pundit.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿਆਣਾ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਸਹਿਤ ਸਿਉ ਮੰਡਿਤ ॥
ko khat karam sahit si-o mandit.
Someone keeps himself embellished with the six deeds as ordained by Shastras.
ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਛੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਜਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕੋਈ ਕਰੈ ਆਚਾਰ ਸੁਕਰਣੀ ॥
ko-ee karai aachaar sukarnee.
Someone maintains a pure lifestyle, and does good deeds.
ਕੋਈ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੋਹਿ ਦੀਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣੀ ॥੭॥
mohi deen har har har sarnee. ||7||
But I, the humble one, remain only in the refuge of God. ||7||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੭॥
ਸਗਲੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਜੁਗ ਸੋਧੇ ॥
saglay karam Dharam jug soDhay.
I have carefully examined the religions and rituals of all the ages.
(ਅਸਾਂ) ਸਾਰੇ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਪਰਖ ਵੇਖੇ ਹਨ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੋਧੇ ॥
bin naavai ih man na parboDhay.
This mind does not become spiritually wise without remembering God’s Name.
ਇਹ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਗਿਆਨਵਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ।
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਉ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
kaho naanak ja-o saaDhsang paa-i-aa.
Nanak says that when one joined the company of the Guru,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਦੋਂ (ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਈ,
ਬੂਝੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਹਾ ਸੀਤਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੧॥
boojhee tarisnaa mahaa seetlaa-i-aa. ||8||1||
his fierce yearning for worldly desires got extinguished, and his mind became immensely calm. ||8||1||
ਉਸਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਬੁੱਝ ਗਈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Raamkalee, Fifth Guru:
ਇਸੁ ਪਾਨੀ ਤੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਘਰਿਆ ॥
is paanee tay jin too ghari-aa.
That God who fashioned you out of the water (father’s semen),
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਤੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ,
ਮਾਟੀ ਕਾ ਲੇ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
maatee kaa lay dayhuraa kari-aa.
and out of the clay (five basic elements), He created this body of yours.
ਅਤੇ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਘੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ;
ਉਕਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਲੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ॥
ukat jot lai surat pareekhi-aa.
Infusing the soul, intellect and the discerning wisdom within you,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਬੁੱਧੀ, ਜਿੰਦ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਖਣ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਾ ਕੇ-
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥੧॥
maat garabh meh jin too raakhi-aa. ||1||
He protected you in the womb of your mother. ||1||
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੇਟ ਵਿਚ (ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤ) ਰੱਖਿਆ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖ) ॥੧॥
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਜਨਾ ॥
raakhanhaar samHaar janaa.
O’ brother, remember God, the savior, with loving devotion,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਦਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਿਆ ਕਰ,
ਸਗਲੇ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੀਚਾਰ ਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saglay chhod beechaar manaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and O’ my mind, Give up all other thoughts, ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥
jin dee-ay tuDh baap mehtaaree.
One who blessed you with your father, mother,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਪੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਪੁਤ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
jin dee-ay bharaat put haaree.
One who gave you brothers, sons and servants,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਰਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਤੇ ਨੌਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
jin dee-ay tuDh banitaa ar meetaa.
One who blessed you with wife and friends;
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਜਣ-ਮਿੱਤਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੨॥
tis thaakur ka-o rakh layho cheetaa. ||2||
keep that Master-God enshrined in your mind. ||2||
ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੨॥
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਵਨੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ॥
jin dee-aa tuDh pavan amolaa.
One who gave you the invaluable air,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਭੀ ਮੁੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹਵਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਾ ॥
jin dee-aa tuDh neer nirmola.
One who gave you the priceless water;
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਬਲਨਾ ॥
jin dee-aa tuDh paavak balnaa.
One who gave you the fire,
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਬਾਲਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀ ਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਸਰਨਾ ॥੩॥
tis thaakur kee rahu man sarnaa. ||3||
O’ my mind, remain in the refuge of that Master-God ||3||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆ ਰਹੁ ॥੩॥
ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀਏ ॥
chhateeh amrit jin bhojan dee-ay.
One who blessed you with many kinds of delicious foods,
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਦਿੱਤੇ,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਥਾਨ ਠਹਰਾਵਨ ਕਉ ਕੀਏ ॥
antar thaan thehraavan ka-o kee-ay.
and made different organs within you to digest these foods;
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਖਾਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਜ਼ਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਮਿਹਦਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਅੰਗ ਬਣਾਏ,
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਦੀਓ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਬਲਨਾ ॥
basuDhaa dee-o bartan balnaa.
gave you the earth and other things to use,
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਧਰਤੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵਰਤਣ-ਵਲੇਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਰਖੁ ਚਰਨਾ ॥੪॥
tis thaakur kay chit rakh charnaa. ||4||
enshrine the immaculate Name of that Master-God in your mind. ||4||
ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੋ ਰੱਖ ॥੪॥
ਪੇਖਨ ਕਉ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਨਨ ਕਉ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
paykhan ka-o naytar sunan ka-o karnaa.
He who blessed you with eyes to see, and ears to hear,
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਤੈਨੂੰ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ) ਵੇਖਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਕੰਨ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਸਤ ਕਮਾਵਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਰਸਨਾ ॥
hasat kamaavan baasan rasnaa.
hands to earn your livelihood, a nose, and a tongue;
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੱਥ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਨੱਕ ਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ;
ਚਰਨ ਚਲਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
charan chalan ka-o sir keeno mayraa.
and feet to walk and crowned all these organs with the head (brain);
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਲਈ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੈਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰ (ਸਾਰੇ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ
ਮਨ ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਪੈਰਾ ॥੫॥
man tis thaakur kay poojahu pairaa. ||5||
O’ my mind, most humbly keep meditating on that Master-God’s Name. ||5||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ ਸਦਾ ਪੂਜਦਾ ਰਹੁ (ਨਿਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹੁ ॥੫॥
ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
apvitar pavitar jin too kari-aa.
He who created you, the immaculate person from impure things,
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਗੰਦ ਤੋਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ,
ਸਗਲ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ॥
sagal jon meh too sir Dhari-aa.
and made you the head of all species.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਅਬ ਤੂ ਸੀਝੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਹੀ ਸੀਝੈ ॥
ab too seejh bhaavai nahee seejhai.
Now, it is up to you whether you win the game of your life or not.
ਤੇਰੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਹੈ ਹੁਣ ਤੂੰ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਚਾਹੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੋ।
ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਵਰੈ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਿਆਈਜੈ ॥੬॥
kaaraj savrai man parabh Dhi-aa-eejai. ||6||
O’ my mind, the purpose of human life is accomplished only by remembering God with loving devotion. ||6||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸਫਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਏਕੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
eehaa oohaa aykai ohee.
Both here and hereafter, it is the same God alone,
ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ,
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੋਹੀ ॥
jat kat daykhee-ai tat tat tohee.
wherever we look, it is He, whom we see.
ਜਿੱਥੇ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਝਾਤੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾਏ ਉਥੇ ਉਥੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ) ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਤ ਮਨਿ ਆਲਸੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
tis sayvat man aalas karai.
The mind becomes lazy in remembering that God,
ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਲਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਸਰੈ ॥੭॥
jis visri-ai ik nimakh na sarai. ||7||
forgetting whom, one cannot spiritually survive even for a moment. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਇਕ ਪਲ-ਭਰ ਸਮਾ ਭੀ ਸੌਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ॥
ham apraaDhee nirgunee-aaray.
O’ God, we are the sinners, without any virtue at all,
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਅਸੀਂ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਪੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ,
ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਮਾਰੇ ॥
naa kichh sayvaa naa karmaaray.
we neither perform any devotional worship, nor any good deeds.
ਅਸੀਂ ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਸਾਡੇ ਕੰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥
gur bohith vadbhaagee mili-aa.
By good fortune, those who met the Guru who is like a boat to ferry mortals across the worldly ocean of vices,
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ-ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak daas sang paathar tari-aa. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak! in the company of that Guru even a stone hearted persons crossed over the worldly ocean of vices. ||8||2||.
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਉਸ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ) ਪੱਥਰ-ਦਿਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਗਏ ॥੮॥੨॥

ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰੰਗ ਰਸ ਰੂਪ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai rang ras roop.
someone’s life is passing, enjoying worldly pleasures, relishes and beauty.
ਕਿਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਿਆਂ, ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸਾਂ-ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੀਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ;
