Raag Raamkalee, First Guru, First Beat, Four stanzas:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੋਈ ਪੜਤਾ ਸਹਸਾਕਿਰਤਾ ਕੋਈ ਪੜੈ ਪੁਰਾਨਾ ॥
ko-ee parh-taa sehsaakirtaa ko-ee parhai puraanaa.
O’ God, some people read scriptures written in Sehaskirat (a form of Sanskrit), and some read Puranas.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !ਕੋਈ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੋਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ।
ਕੋਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਨਾ ॥
ko-ee naam japai japmaalee laagai tisai Dhi-aanaa.
Some meditate on the name of gods and goddesses using the rosary and some go deep into meditative trance.
ਕੋਈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਧ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਮਾਲਾ ਨਾਲ (ਦੇਵਤੇ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਈ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
ab hee kab hee kichhoo na jaanaa tayraa ayko naam pachhaanaa. ||1||
O’ God! neither now, nor ever before have I known anyone else other than Your Name. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ), ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉੱਦਮ (ਐਸਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ (ਜੋ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚਾ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ) ॥੧॥
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਹਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਵਨ ਗਤੇ ॥
na jaanaa haray mayree kavan gatay.
O’ God, I do not know what my spiritual condition would be without Your Name.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਿ (ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਇਗੀ।
ਹਮ ਮੂਰਖ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਲਾਜ ਪਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham moorakh agi-aan saran parabh tayree kar kirpaa raakho mayree laaj patay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ God! I am foolish and ignorant; I seek Your refuge, bestow mercy and save my honor. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਹਾਂ, (ਪਰ) ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਤੇ) ਮੇਰੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰੱਖ ਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਬਹੂ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਊਭਿ ਚੜਤੁ ਹੈ ਕਬਹੂ ਜਾਇ ਪਇਆਲੇ ॥
kabhoo jee-arhaa oobh charhat hai kabhoo jaa-ay pa-i-aalay.
O’ God, sometimes this mind is so much elated as if it is flying high in the skies, but at other times, it is so much depressed as if it has fallen into a deep well.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਕਦੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ) ਜੀਵ (ਬੜਾ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਮਾਨੋ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਥੁੜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਾਵਾਂ-ਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਪਾਤਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲੋਭੀ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਰਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਡਾ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੨॥
lobhee jee-arhaa thir na rahat hai chaaray kundaa bhaalay. ||2||
This greedy mind never remains stable and tries to search for worldly riches and power in all the four directions. ||2||
ਲੋਭ-ਵੱਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ, ਚੌਹੀਂ ਪਾਸੀਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਏ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਹਿ ਮਾਈ ॥
maran likhaa-ay mandal meh aa-ay jeevan saajeh maa-ee.
O’ mother, we come into this world, with death preordained in our destiny, but we keep making plans for living here forever.
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਲੇਖ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ) ਲਿਖਾ ਕੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ) ਮੌਤ (ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਵੇਗੀ; ਪਰ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਇਥੇ ਸਦਾ) ਜੀਊਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਬਾਨ੍ਹਣੂ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਏਕਿ ਚਲੇ ਹਮ ਦੇਖਹ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਭਾਹਿ ਬਲੰਤੀ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
ayk chalay ham daykhah su-aamee bhaahi balantee aa-ee. ||3||
O’ Master, we see that some of our friends and relatives have already departed from this world, and the burning fire of death is advancing towards us also. ||3|
ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੀਵ (ਇਥੋਂ) ਤੁਰੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, (ਮੌਤ ਦੀ) ਅੱਗ ਬਲ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਭਸਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਣੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਹੀ ਲੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੩॥
ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਸੀ ਕਾ ਭਾਈ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਬਾਪੁ ਨ ਮਾਈ ॥
na kisee kaa meet na kisee kaa bhaa-ee naa kisai baap na maa-ee.
O’ God, no one has any friend and no one has a brother, father or mother who could be of any help at the time of one’s death.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ, ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਭਰਾ, ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਪਿਉ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ (ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਨਿਬਾਹ ਸਕਦਾ)।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਅੰਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
paranvat naanak jay too dayveh antay ho-ay sakhaa-ee. ||4||1||
Nanak prays, O’ God, if You bless me with Your Name, that will be my helper in the end. ||4||1||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਤੇਰੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ-ਜੇ ਤੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਦੇਵੇਂ, ਤਾਂ (ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇਹੀ) ਅੰਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Raamkalee, First Guru:
ਸਰਬ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਸਰਿ ਰਹੀ ॥
sarab jot tayree pasar rahee.
O’ God, Your divine light is pervading in all.
ਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ! ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਰੁਮਕ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਨਰਹਰੀ ॥੧॥
jah jah daykhaa tah narharee. ||1||
Wherever I look, I see You present there. ||1||
ਜਿਧਰ ਜਿਧਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਉਧਰ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸੇਂ) ॥੧॥
ਜੀਵਨ ਤਲਬ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
jeevan talab nivaar su-aamee.
O’ my Master-God, eradicate the increasing worldly desire of my life.
ਹੇ ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਧਦੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ।
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਗਾਡਿਆ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਉਤਰਉ ਪਾਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDh koop maa-i-aa man gaadi-aa ki-o kar utara-o paar su-aamee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
My mind is stuck in the blind well of Maya, the worldly riches and power; I cannot swim across this world-ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬਸਿਆ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
jah bheetar ghat bheetar basi-aa baahar kaahay naahee.
O’ my friends, they who believe that God is abiding within their hearts, also believe that He is pervading outside as well.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਭੀ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਉਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
tin kee saar karay nit saahib sadaa chint man maahee. ||2||
God always takes care of them all, and always has their concerns in His mind. ||2||
ਮਾਲਿਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਦਾ) ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਆਪੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
aapay nayrhai aapay door.
God Himself is near all beings, and He is also far from them.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਵੱਸ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖ) ਦੂਰ ਭੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥
aapay sarab rahi-aa bharpoor.
He Himself is all-pervading, permeating everywhere.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
satgur milai anDhayraa jaa-ay.
When we realize the true Guru, the darkness of ignorance disappears.
ਜੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ।
