ਲਾਲਿ ਰਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
laal rataa man maani-aa gur pooraa paa-i-aa. ||2||
When a person meets the perfect Guru, he becomes completely imbued with God’s love and his mind becomes convinced. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਲਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਲਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਰਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ) ॥੨॥
ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤੂ ਵਸੈ ॥
ha-o jeevaa gun saar antar too vasai.
O’ God, if You come to reside in me, I would feel rejuvenated remembering Your virtues.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਚੇਤੇ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੌਲ ਪਏ, ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ “ਤੂ ਹੀ ਤੂ” ਦੀ ਧੁਨ ਲੱਗ ਪਏ।
ਤੂੰ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਸਿ ਰਸੈ ॥੩॥
tooN vaseh man maahi sehjay ras rasai. ||3||
If You dwell in my mind, my mind would naturally start enjoying the relish of Your love.
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਪਏਂ, ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਏ ॥੩॥
ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਸਮਝਾਇ ਆਖਉ ਕੇਤੜਾ ॥
moorakh man samjhaa-ay aakha-o kayt-rhaa.
O’ my foolish mind, how many times must I tell you to make you understand,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ! ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਕੁ ਸਮਝਾ ਸਮਝਾ ਕੇ ਦੱਸਾਂ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗੇਤੜਾ ॥੪॥
gurmukh har gun gaa-ay rang rangaya-rahat. ||4||
that by singing the praises of God through the Guru, you get yourself imbued with His love. ||4||
ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾ (ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈ) ॥੪॥
ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮੁ ਆਪਣਾ ॥
nit nit ridai samaal pareetam aapnaa.
O’ my mind, day after day, remember your beloved God in your heart.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ।
ਜੇ ਚਲਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੰਤਾਪਣਾ ॥੫॥
jay chaleh gun naal naahee dukh santaapanaa. ||5||
If you depart from this world with virtues, then you will not suffer any pain or sorrow. ||5||
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਚੰਗੇ) ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਤੁਰੇਂ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਕਲੇਸ਼ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇਗਾ ॥੫॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਾ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੈ ॥
manmukh bharam bhulaanaa naa tis rang hai.
A self-conceited person is lost in doubt; such a person has no love for God.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਲਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ।
ਮਰਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਡਾਣਾ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਭੰਗੁ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
marsee ho-ay vidaanaa man tan bhang hai. ||6||
He would die in agony because such a person’s body and mind are always in turmoil. ||6||
ਉਹ ਨਿਖਸਮਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਲਾਹਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਣਿਆ ॥
gur kee kaar kamaa-ay laahaa ghar aani-aa.
Anyone who follows the teachings of the Guru, gains profit of devotion to God in his heart,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ (ਭਗਤੀ) ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ) ਲਾਭ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਆਂਦਾ,
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
gurbaanee nirbaan sabad pachhaani-aa. ||7||
and by reflecting on the teachings of the Guru and his immaculate word, he becomes free of worldly desires and realizes God. ||7||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਵਾਸਨਾ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ ॥੭॥
ਇਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥
ik naanak kee ardaas jay tuDh bhaavsee.
Nanak says, I am making this one prayer: O’ God, if it so pleases You,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਪਸੰਦ ਆ ਜਾਏ,
ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਸੀ ॥੮॥੧॥੩॥
mai deejai naam nivaas har gun gaavsee. ||8||1||3||
then enshirine Your Name in my heart, so that I may keep singing Your praises. ||8||1||3||
ਤਾਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰ ਦੇਹ ਤਾ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ॥੮॥੧॥੩॥

Raag Soohee, First Guru:
ਜਿਉ ਆਰਣਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਇ ਭੰਨਿ ਘੜਾਈਐ ॥
ji-o aaran lohaa paa-ay bhann gharhaa-ee-ai.
Just as iron is melted in the furnace and re-shaped,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਭੱਠੀ ਵਿਚ ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ (ਤੇ) ਗਾਲ ਕੇ (ਨਵੇਂ ਸਿਰੇ) ਘੜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਲੋਹੇ ਤੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਬਣਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ)
ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
ti-o saakat jonee paa-ay bhavai bhavaa-ee-ai. ||1||
similarly the self-willed materialist is reincarnated, and forced to wander through the cycle of birth and death. ||1||
ਤਿਵੇਂ ਮਾਇਆ-ਵੇੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਚੱਕਰ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਸਿੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ॥
bin boojhay sabh dukh dukh kamaavanaa.
There is nothing but distress without realizing the righteous way of life; one earns only more and more suffering,
(ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਚ) ਸਮਝਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਭੀ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਦੁੱਖ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਦੁੱਖ (ਸਹੇੜਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਵਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-umai aavai jaa-ay bharam bhulaavanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
one keeps on going through cycle of birth and death because of one’s ego and remains lost in doubt. ||1||Pause||
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
tooN gurmukh rakhanhaar har naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
O’ God, You are the savior of the devout person who meditates on God’s Name.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੂੰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ; ਉਹ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੇਲਹਿ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਰਜਾਇ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
mayleh tujheh rajaa-ay sabad kamaa-ee-ai. ||2||
When You unite anybody with the Guru per your will, only then one lives in accordance with the Guru’s word. ||2||
ਗੁਰੂ (ਭੀ) ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਆਚਰਨ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨॥
ਤੂੰ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਸੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
tooN kar kar vaykheh aap deh so paa-ee-ai.
O’ God, You created the creation and You take care of it also; we receive onlywhatever You give us.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਦਰਿ ਬੀਨਾਈਐ ॥੩॥
too daykheh thaap uthaap dar beenaa-ee-ai. ||3||
We know that You create, destroy and sustain them all under your watch. ||3||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਆਪ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਸਭ ਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਗਰਾਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੩॥
ਦੇਹੀ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਖਾਕੁ ਪਵਣੁ ਉਡਾਈਐ ॥
dayhee hovag khaak pavan udaa-ee-ai.
When the soul leaves the body, our body turns into dust.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਸੁਆਸ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਕਿਥੈ ਘਰੁ ਅਉਤਾਕੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥
ih kithai ghar a-utaak mahal na paa-ee-ai. ||4||
Then we don’t know where our houses or resting places are, and we won’t ever get back our mansions. ||4||
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਹਲ ਮਾੜੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਫਿਰ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਘਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਬੈਠਕ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਮਹਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਦਿਹੁ ਦੀਵੀ ਅੰਧ ਘੋਰੁ ਘਬੁ ਮੁਹਾਈਐ ॥
dihu deevee anDh ghor ghab muhaa-ee-ai.
In bright daylight, we are living in pitch darkness of spiritual ignorance, and we are letting our precious wealth of life being stolen away.
(ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜਾਚ ਸਮਝਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ ਦਾ ਮਾਲ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ) ਲੁਟਾਈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਚਿੱਟਾ ਦਿਨ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ (ਇਸ ਦੇ ਭਾ ਦਾ) ਘੁੱਪ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਸੈ ਘਰੁ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਸੁ ਰੂਆਈਐ ॥੫॥
garab musai ghar chor kis roo-aa-ee-ai. ||5||
Our self-conceit is looting us of our precious life just like a thief robbing his own house, so before whom can we complain? ||5||
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਗ਼ਾਫ਼ਲ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ) ਚੋਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸਰਮਾਏ) ਨੂੰ ਲੁੱਟਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਸਮਝ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ) ਕਿਸ ਪਾਸ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਕਰੇ? ॥੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਗਾਈਐ ॥
gurmukh chor na laag har naam jagaa-ee-ai.
A Guru’s follower is not robbed by any internal thief (vices), because through God’s Name, the Guru keeps him aware of his spiritual wealth
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ (ਦੇ ਸਰਮਾਏ) ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸਰਮਾਏ ਦੇ ਚੋਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਆਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੀਪਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
sabad nivaaree aag jot deepaa-ee-ai. ||6||
With his word, the Guru puts off the fire of worldly desires from the mind of such a person and illuminates his mind with the divine knowledge. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ (ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-) ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਰੱਬੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਲਾਲੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬੁਝਾਈਐ ॥
laal ratan har naam gur surat bujhaa-ee-ai.
The Guru imparts this awakening to him that God’s Name is the true jewel and a gem.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ) ਲਾਲ ਹੈ ਰਤਨ ਹੈ (ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੂਝ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦੀ)।
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ਜੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
sadaa rahai nihkaam jay gurmat paa-ee-ai. ||7||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, remains free of worldly desires forever. ||7||
ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਏ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਵਾਸਨਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
raat dihai har naa-o man vasaa-ee-ai.
We should enshrine God’s Name in our hearts day and night.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਰਾਤ ਦਿਨ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਈਐ ॥੮॥੨॥੪॥
naanak mayl milaa-ay jay tuDh bhaa-ee-ai.||8||2||4||
Nanak says, O’ God, if it pleases You, unite me with Yourself. ||8||2||4||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਕਰ-ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਭਾਵੇ (ਤਾਂ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ, ਤੇ) ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ॥੮॥੨॥੪॥

Raag Soohee, First Guru:
ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
manhu na naam visaar ahinis Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
We should not forsake Naam from our mind, and should meditate on it with love and devotion day and night,
(ਹੇ ਜਿੰਦੇ!) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਹ ਭੁਲਾ। ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ-ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਉ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਤਿਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
ji-o raakhahi kirpaa Dhaar tivai sukh paa-ee-ai. ||1||
O’ God, showing Your mercy in whatever state You keep me, I would find peace in that. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋ ਸਾਈਂ! ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਆਰਾਮ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ॥੧॥
ਮੈ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਕੁਟੀ ਟੋਹਣੀ ॥
mai anDhulay har naam lakutee tohnee.
For me, God’s Name is like the guiding stick of a blind person.
ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਡੰਗੋਰੀ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਦੇਂਦਾ) ਹੈ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ) ਟੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਟੋਹ ਟੋਹ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ ਲੱਭਦਾ ਹਾਂ)।
ਰਹਉ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਨ ਮੋਹੈ ਮੋਹਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raha-o saahib kee tayk na mohai mohnee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When I live on the support of Master-God, the captivating Maya doesn’t entice me. ||1||Pause||
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਮੈਂ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥
jah daykh-a-u tah naal gur daykhaali-aa.
Wherever I look, the Guru has shown me that God is always with me.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਧਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਿਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਾਲਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੨॥
antar baahar bhaal sabad nihaali-aa. ||2||
After trying to find Him within and without, ultimately through the Guru’s word, I have realized Him within myself. ||2||
ਬਾਹਰ ਲੱਭ ਲੱਭ ਕੇ ਹੁਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸੇਵੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ॥
sayvee satgur bhaa-ay naam niranjanaa.
By humbly following the teachings of the Guru, I lovingly meditate on the Name of immaculate God.
ਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਰਜਾਇ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨਾ ॥੩॥
tuDh bhaavai tivai rajaa-ay bharam bha-o bhanjnaa. ||3||
O’ God, the destroyer of doubt and dread, whatever pleases You, I believe that to be Your Will.
ਹੇ ਭਰਮ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੈਂ ਉਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਜਨਮਤ ਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
janmat hee dukh laagai marnaa aa-ay kai.
As soon as we are born, we are afflicted with the fear of death.
(ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦੇਈਏ ਤਾਂ) ਜੰਮਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਆ ਵਾਪਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨਮੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੪॥
janam maran parvaan har gun gaa-ay kai. ||4||
But both birth and death of a person are approved by singing praises of God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਸਫਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤੂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤੁਧ ਹੀ ਸਾਜਿਆ ॥
ha-o naahee too hoveh tuDh hee saaji-aa.
O’ God, You are there where there is no ego; You fashioned all of this creation.
ਜਿਥੇ ਹੰਗਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਉਥੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੈ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ।
