ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਖੋਵੈ ॥
janam padaarath dubiDhaa khovai.
He wastes this precious human life in duality (love of worldly riches).
ਅਮੋਲਕ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਉਹ ਦਵੈਤ-ਭਾਵ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਆ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਰੋਵੈ ॥੬॥
aap na cheenas bharam bharam rovai. ||6||
He does not know his own self and trapped by doubts, he cries out in pain. ||6||
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਵਿਰਲਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਕਹਤਉ ਪੜਤਉ ਸੁਣਤਉ ਏਕ ॥
kahta-o parh-ta-o sunta-o ayk.
One who always recites, reads and listens to God’s praises,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਹੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਧੀਰਜ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਟੇਕ ॥
Dheeraj Dharam DharneeDhar tayk.
God, the support of the world, blesses him with contentment, faith and refuge.
ਧਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ, ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਹਿਨਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ, ਸਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਪਨਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
jat sat sanjam ridai samaa-ay.
Chastity, righteousness and self discipline remain enshrined in the heart,
ਜਤ ਸਤ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਕਉ ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਏ ॥੭॥
cha-uthay pad ka-o jay man patee-aa-ay. ||7||
if mind becomes accustomed to the fourth (higher)spiritual status.||7||
ਜੇ ਮਨ ਚੌਥੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਗਿਝ ਜਾਵੇ ॥੭॥
ਸਾਚੇ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
saachay nirmal mail na laagai.
The filth of vices does not stick to the mind of a person who has become immaculate by remaining attuned to the eternal God
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਏ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੰਬੜਦੀ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
gur kai sabad bharam bha-o bhaagai.
His worldly fear and doubt departs by following the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ) ਡਰ-ਸਹਮ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੂਰਤਿ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਆਦਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
soorat moorat aad anoop. naanak jaachai saach saroop. ||8||1||
God whose form is of unparalleled beauty and whose existence is before the beginning of time,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਸੂਰਤ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਵਜੂਦ ਆਦਿ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਚਲਿਆ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak jaachai saach saroop. ||8||1||
Nanak begs from that eternal God the gift of Naam ||8||1||
ਨਾਨਕ (ਭੀ) ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਸਤੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Dhanaasaree, First Guru:
ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
sahj milai mili-aa parvaan.
One who unites with God in intuitive poise is truly approved.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਕਬੂਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
naa tis maran na aavan jaan.
That person spiritually does not die and does not go through births and deaths.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ।
ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਾਸ ਮਹਿ ਸੋਇ ॥
thaakur meh daas daas meh so-ay.
Such a devotee remains absorbed in God and God manifests in such a devotee.
ਅਜੇਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਅਜੇਹੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
jah daykhaa tah avar na ko-ay. ||1||
Wherever that devotee sees, he sees none other than God.||1||
ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
gurmukh bhagat sahj ghar paa-ee-ai.
By remembering God through the Guru’s teachings, we attain the supreme spiritual status,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮਰਿ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bin gur bhaytay mar aa-ee-ai jaa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
but without meeting and following the Guru’s teachings, we spiritually die and fall in the cycles of birth and death. ||1||pause||
ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਉ ਜਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
so gur kara-o je saach darirh-aavai.
Follow only that Guru who makes you firmly believe in the eternal God,
ਉਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਕਰੋਂ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪੱਕੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਟਿਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ,
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥਾਵੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
akath kathaavai sabad milaavai.
who makes you utter praises of the indescribable God, and unites you with God through the divine word.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਵੇ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਵੇ।
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਅਵਰ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
har kay log avar nahee kaaraa.
For the true of devotees of God, there is no other important task except remembering Him;
ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ,
ਸਾਚਉ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੨॥
saacha-o thaakur saach pi-aaraa. ||2||
they love and remember the eternal God. ||2||
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ॥
tan meh manoo-aa man meh saachaa.
One whose mind remains within the body and doesn’t run after worldly riches, the eternal God becomes menifest in his mind.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ) ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਚਾ ॥
so saachaa mil saachay raachaa.
realizing the eternal God, he merges with Him.
ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੈ ਪਾਇ ॥
sayvak parabh kai laagai paa-ay.
That devotee remains attuned to God’s Name,
ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
satgur pooraa milai milaa-ay. ||3||
who meets the perfect true Guru and the Guru unites him with God. ||3||
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਖੈ ॥
aap dikhaavai aapay daykhai.
On His own God shows His sight through the Guru, He Himself watches over us.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਠਿ ਨ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਨਾ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖੈ ॥
hath na pateejai naa baho bhaykhai.
He is not pleased by stubborn-mindedness, nor by various religious garbs.
ਉਹ ਹਠ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤੀਜਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਬਹੁਤੇ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਭੇਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਘੜਿ ਭਾਡੇ ਜਿਨਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gharh bhaaday jin amrit paa-i-aa.
God who fashioned the human bodies and infused the ambrosial nectar like Naam into them;
ਜਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਾਜ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇਆ ॥੪॥
paraym bhagat parabh man patee-aa-i-aa. ||4||
that God attached their mind with His loving devotional worship.||4||
ਉਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭੂਲਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
parh parh bhooleh chotaa khaahi.
By studying more and more scriptures, people become arrogant and forget to remember God, and suffer spiritual losses.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ) ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
bahut si-aanap aavahi jaahi.
And because of their too much cleverness, fall in the cycles of birth and death.
(ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੀ) ਬਹੁਤੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਭਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
naam japai bha-o bhojan khaa-ay.
Those who meditate on Naam and use revered fear of God as spiritual nutrition,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh sayvak rahay samaa-ay. ||5||
by following the Guru’s teachings, such devottes remain absorbed in God. ||5||
ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਪੂਜਿ ਸਿਲਾ ਤੀਰਥ ਬਨ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
pooj silaa tirath ban vaasaa.
He who worshiped idols, bathed at holy places, lived in forests,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੱਥਰ (ਦੀਆਂ ਮੂਰਤੀਆਂ) ਪੂਜਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ, ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ,
ਭਰਮਤ ਡੋਲਤ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
bharmat dolat bha-ay udaasaa.
and wandered around in doubt as a renunciate;
ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਥਾਂ ਥਾਂ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਫਿਰਿਆ (ਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਰਮ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ),
ਮਨਿ ਮੈਲੈ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥
man mailai soochaa ki-o ho-ay.
but if his mind remained soiled with vices, then how can he become pure?
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੬॥
saach milai paavai pat so-ay. ||6||
One who merges with the eternal God obtains honor in His presence. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਆਚਾਰਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥
aachaaraa veechaar sareer.
He (The Guru), who is of supreme conduct and immaculate thoughts,
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਚਰਨ ਭੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉੱਚੀ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਸੂਝ ਭੀ ਹੈ,
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਿ ॥
aad jugaad sahj man Dheer.
whose mind always remains content in a state of peace and poise,
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਧੀਰਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਲ ਪੰਕਜ ਮਹਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
pal pankaj meh kot uDhaaray.
who in an instant saves millions of people stuck in the mud of vices.
ਜੋ ਅੱਖ ਝਮਕਣ ਦੇ ਸਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੭॥
kar kirpaa gur mayl pi-aaray. ||7||
O’ my Beloved God, bestow mercy and unite me with that Guru. ||7||
ਹੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾ ॥੭॥
ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥
kis aagai parabh tuDh saalaahee.
O’ God, before whom, may I praise You,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਬੰਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਮੈ ਕੋ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਕਿਤੇ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਾਖੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
ji-o tuDh bhaavai ti-o raakh rajaa-ay.
O’ God, keep me under Your will as it pleases You,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜਿ ਭਾਇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak sahj bhaa-ay gun gaa-ay. ||8||2||
so that Nanak may intuitively sing Your praises with love. ||8||2||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਜੂਨੀ ਆਇਓ ਤਿਹ ਤਿਹ ਉਰਝਾਇਓ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
jo jo joonee aa-i-o tih tih urjhaa-i-o maanas janam sanjog paa-i-aa.
Human life is received through good fortune, but whoever is born into the world remains entangled in the love of worldly riches.
ਚੰਗੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਜਨਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜਨਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਓਹੋ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਾਕੀ ਹੈ ਓਟ ਸਾਧ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਥ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
taakee hai ot saaDh raakho day kar haath kar kirpaa maylhu har raa-i-aa. ||1||
O’ my Guru, I depend on your support, extend your help and save me from the bonds of Maya; bestow your grace and unite me with the sovereign God .||1||
ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਤੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਦੇ ਕੇ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈ। ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇ ॥੧॥
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਥਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
anik janam bharam thit nahee paa-ee.
I have been wandering through countless births, but I have not found any way to escape from the cycle of birth and death.
ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕ ਭਟਕ ਕੇ (ਜੂਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਦਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ) ਟਿਕਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਾ।
ਕਰਉ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਲਾਗਉ ਚਰਨ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀ ਬਤਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kara-o sayvaa gur laaga-o charan govind jee kaa maarag dayh jee bataa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my Guru, now I have come to your refuge and I follow your teachings; please tell me the way to unite with God.||1||pause||
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਆ ਪਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ) ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਦੱਸ ਦੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਕਰਉ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਉ ਬਚਿਤਿ ਧਰਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਵਿਹਾਵੈ ॥
anik upaav kara-o maa-i-aa ka-o bachit Dhara-o mayree mayree karat sad hee vihaavai.
I make innumerable efforts and keep thinking about worldly riches in my mind; my entire life is being spent constantly crying out, “mine, mine”
ਮੈਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਹੀਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ,ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਉਚੇਚੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਸਦਾ ‘ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ, ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ’ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਮੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਬੀਤਦੀ) ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
