ਇਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਸਭੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਲੇਇ ॥
i-o gurmukh aap nivaaree-ai sabh raaj sarisat kaa lay-ay.
In this way, when the Guru’s follower completely sheds his ego, then he feels as if he has received the sovereignty of the entire universe.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਲੈ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਜਾ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh bujhee-ai jaa aapay nadar karay-i. ||1||
O’ Nanak, only when God Himself casts His glance of grace then we receive such understanding through the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਦੋਂ ਹਰੀ ਆਪ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਆਏ ਤੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
jin gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-i-aa aa-ay tay parvaan.
Approved is the advent of those who lovingly meditate on Naam through the Guru’s teachings.
(ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਆਏ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
naanak kul uDhaareh aapnaa dargeh paavahi maan. ||2||
O’ Nanak, they save their lineage, and receive honor in God’s presence. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਕੁਲ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਖੀਆ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਮੇਲਾਈਆ ॥
gurmukh sakhee-aa sikh guroo maylaa-ee-aa.
The Guru has brought together the friendly disciples who follow his teachings.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿੱਖ (-ਰੂਪ) ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ (ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਈਆਂ ਹਨ;
ਇਕਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਇਕਿ ਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਈਆ ॥
ik sayvak gur paas ik gur kaarai laa-ee-aa.
Some remain with the Guru and serve him and some are assigned to other tasks.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਕਈਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਹੋਰ) ਕਾਰੇ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ;
ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇਵਾਈਆ ॥
jinaa gur pi-aaraa man chit tinaa bhaa-o guroo dayvaa-ee-aa.
Those who cherish their beloved Guru in their conscious minds, the Guru blesses them with his love.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਾ ਇਕੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਤਾ ਪੁਤਾ ਭਾਈਆ ॥
gur sikhaa iko pi-aar gur mitaa putaa bhaa-ee-aa.
The Guru has the same love for his disciples, friends, children and siblings.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਭਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀਵਾਈਆ ॥੧੪॥
gur satgur bolhu sabh gur aakh guroo jeevaa-ee-aa. ||14||
All of you lovingly remember the true Guru again and again, because when we remember the true Guru, he rejuvenates our spiritual life. ||14||
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰੋ। ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਮੁੜ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Shalok, Third Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਨੀ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਅਵਰੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
naanak naam na chaytnee agi-aanee anDhulay avray karam kamaahi.
O’ Nanak, the spiritually ignorant and unwise people do not remember Naam and keep doing other useless deeds,
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਪਚਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
jam dar baDhay maaree-ah fir vistaa maahi pachaahi. ||1||
They are bound and punished by the demon of death; and in the end, they get consumed in the filth of vices. ||1||
ਜਮ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਉਹ ਮਾਰ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ (ਵਿਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਵਿਸ਼ਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥

Third Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਚੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naanak satgur sayveh aapnaa say jan sachay parvaan.
O’ Nanak, those who serve and follow their true Guru are true and approved.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਕਬੂਲ ਹਨ;
ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਸਮਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
har kai naa-ay samaa-ay rahay chookaa aavan jaan. ||2||
They remain absorbed in God’s Name, and their cycle of birth and death comes to an end. ||2||
ਉਹ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਧਨੁ ਸੰਪੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਅੰਤੇ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ॥
Dhan sampai maa-i-aa sanchee-ai antay dukh-daa-ee.
We amass wealth of worldly riches, but ultimately it brings misery.
ਧਨ, ਦੌਲਤ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕਰੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲ ਸਵਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ghar mandar mahal savaaree-ah kichh saath na jaa-ee.
Decorated houses, mansions and palaces will not go with anyone.
ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਕਾਨ, ਭਵਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਹਿਲ-ਮਾੜੀਆਂ, ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਹਰ ਰੰਗੀ ਤੁਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਤੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥
har rangee turay nit paalee-ah kitai kaam na aa-ee.
We raise different breeds of horses, but these serve no purpose in the end.
ਕਈ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਸਦਾ ਪਾਲੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ।
ਜਨ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਚਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਅੰਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
jan laavhu chit har naam si-o ant ho-ay sakhaa-ee.
O’ humans, attune your mind to God’s Name, which would be your companion in the end.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਸੱਜਣੋ! ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜੋ, ਜੋ ਅਖ਼ੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣੇ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੫॥
jan naanak naam Dhi-aa-i-aa gurmukh sukh paa-ee. ||15||
O’ Nanak, one who follows the Guru’s teachings and remembers Naam with loving devotion, receives celestial peace. ||15||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥

Shalok, Third Mehl:
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮੈ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੂਰੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin karmai naa-o na paa-ee-ai poorai karam paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
God’s Name cannot be realized without his grace, it is obtained only through His kindness.
ਪੂਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਹਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak nadar karay jay aapnee taa gurmat mayl milaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, if God casts His glance of grace on someone, then He unites that person with Him by attuning him to the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ-ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਇਕ ਦਝਹਿ ਇਕ ਦਬੀਅਹਿ ਇਕਨਾ ਕੁਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
ik dajheh ik dabee-ah iknaa kutay khaahi.
Some people cremate their dead, some bury in the ground, while some dead bodies are eaten by animals like dogs.
(ਮਰਨ ਤੇ) ਕੋਈ ਸਾੜੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੋਈ ਦੱਬੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਕਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਉਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਹਸਣਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
ik paanee vich ustee-ah ik bhee fir hasan paahi.
Some dead bodies are thrown into water, while others are kept in a dry well (enclosed space) to be eaten by vultures.
ਕੋਈ ਜਲ-ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੁੱਕੇ ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਏਵ ਨ ਜਾਪਈ ਕਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak ayv na jaap-ee kithai jaa-ay samaahi. ||2||
O’ Nanak, irrespective of the way of disposal, it is not known where the souls go in the end and into what they merge. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਾੜਨ ਦੱਬਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗ ਸਕਦਾ ਕਿ ਰੂਹਾਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾ ਵੱਸਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਨਾਮਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ॥
tin kaa khaaDhaa paiDhaa maa-i-aa sabh pavit hai jo naam har raatay.
The food, clothes, and all the worldly possessions of those, who are imbued with the love of God’s Name, are sacred.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਣਾ, ਖਾਣਾ ਪਹਿਨਣਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ;
ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਲ ਸਰਾਈ ਸਭਿ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹਹਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿਖ ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਜਾਇ ਵਰਸਾਤੇ ॥
tin kay ghar mandar mahal saraa-ee sabh pavit heh jinee gurmukh sayvak sikh abhi-aagat jaa-ay varsaatay.
Their houses, mansions, palaces, and rest-houses are sacred where the Guru’s followers, devotees, disciples and the renouncers go and stay in peace.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ, ਮੰਦਰ, ਮਹਿਲ ਤੇ ਸਰਾਵਾਂ ਸਭ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਭਿਆਗਤ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਤੁਰੇ ਜੀਨ ਖੁਰਗੀਰ ਸਭਿ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹਹਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਿਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਚੜਿ ਜਾਤੇ ॥
tin kay turay jeen khurgeer sabh pavit heh jinee gurmukh sikh saaDh sant charh jaatay.
Blessed are all their horses, saddles and horse blankets, on which the Guru’s followers, disciples and saintly people mount and ride.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੋੜੇ, ਜ਼ੀਨਾਂ, ਤਾਹਰੂ ਸਭ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਭਿ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹਹਿ ਜੋ ਬੋਲਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਤੇ ॥
tin kay karam Dharam kaaraj sabh pavit heh jo boleh har har raam naam har saatay.
Immaculate are the deeds and acts of righteousness of those, who always utter the Name of the eternal God.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ-ਕਾਜ ਸਭ ਪਵ੍ਰਿੱਤ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਤੇ ॥੧੬॥
jin kai potai punn hai say gurmukh sikh guroo peh jaatay. ||16||
Those Guru-following disciples, who have virtues as their treasure, go to the Guru’s refuge. ||16||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ (ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ-ਰੂਪ) ਪੁੰਨ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧੬॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਘੁਥਿਆ ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
naanak naavhu ghuthi-aa halat palat sabh jaa-ay.
O’ Nanak, losing the opportunity to meditate on Naam, one loses everything both here and hereafter.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸਭ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਿਰਿ ਲਇਆ ਮੁਠੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
jap tap sanjam sabh hir la-i-aa muthee doojai bhaa-ay.
The reward of their worship, penance, and strict discipline is all confiscated, because they are deceived by the love of duality;
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਸਭ ਖੁੱਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ) ਠੱਗੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
jam dar baDhay maaree-ah bahutee milai sajaa-ay. ||1||
bound at the door of demon of death, they are beaten and are awarded severe punishment. ||1||
ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰ ਤੇ ਬੱਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਬੜੀ ਸਜ਼ਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
