ਮਥੇ ਵਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨੁ ਜਮ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਮੁਤੇ ॥
mathay vaal pachhaarhi-an jam maarag mutay.
God leaves the slanderers to suffer in the fear of death as if grabbing them by the forelocks and throwing them on to the road of the demons of death;
(ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਮਾਨੋ,) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਭੁੰਞੇ ਪਟਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ (ਨਿਖਸਮੇ) ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ;
ਦੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਬਿਲਲਾਣਿਆ ਨਰਕਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਸੁਤੇ ॥
dukh lagai billaani-aa narak ghor sutay.
where they moan in agony as if they are sleeping in the most torturous hell.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਲੱਗਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਮਾਨੋ, ਘੋਰ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕੰਠਿ ਲਾਇ ਦਾਸ ਰਖਿਅਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਸਤੇ ॥੨੦॥
kanth laa-ay daas rakhi-an naanak har satay. ||20||
But O’ Nanak, the eternal God saves His devotees from any harm by keeping them so near Him as if He has hugged them to His bosom. ||20||
ਪਰ ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ, ਮਾਨੋ) ਗਲ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨੦॥

Shalok, Fifth Guru:
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਹੋ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
raam japahu vadbhaageeho jal thal pooran so-ay.
O’ the fortunate ones, remember that God with loving devotion who is pervading the waters and the earth.
ਹੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਿਓ! ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਪੋ ਜੋ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ, ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ) ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਧਿਆਇਐ ਬਿਘਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-i-ai bighan na laagai ko-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, by remembering God no impediment comes in our spiritual path. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਾਗਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
kot bighan tis laagtay jis no visrai naa-o.
Millions of misfortunes block the way of the one who forgets God’s Name.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਵਿਘਨ ਆ ਘੇਰਦੇ ਹਨ;
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਿਲਪਤੇ ਜਿਉ ਸੁੰਞੈ ਘਰਿ ਕਾਉ ॥੨॥
naanak an-din bilpatay ji-o sunjai ghar kaa-o. ||2||
O’ Nanak, such persons always wail like a crow in a deserted house. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਜੇਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ) ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਇਉਂ ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੁੰਞੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਂ ਲੌਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰਿਆ ॥
simar simar daataar manorath poori-aa.
By always remembering the beneficent God, the objectives of a devotee’s life are accomplished.
ਸਭ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ (ਮਨ ਦੇ) ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਛ ਪੁੰਨੀ ਮਨਿ ਆਸ ਗਏ ਵਿਸੂਰਿਆ ॥
ichh punnee man aas ga-ay visoori-aa.
The hopes and desires of the mind are realized and sorrows are forgotten.
ਮਨ ਵਿਚਲੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਇੱਛਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੇ) ਝੋਰੇ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਾਲਦਾ ॥
paa-i-aa naam niDhaan jis no bhaaldaa.
He finds the treasure of Naam, which he was searching for.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ’ ਨਾਮ’-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ’ਭਾਲਦਾ ਸੀ।
ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਾਲਦਾ ॥
jot milee sang jot rahi-aa ghaaldaa.
Thus one’s light (soul) merges in the Supreme light and the toil for Maya ends.
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਤਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਵੁਠੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਘਰਿ ॥
sookh sahj aanand vuthay tit ghar.
Celestial peace, poise, and bliss come to reside in his heart.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖ, ਅਡੋਲਤਾ, ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਤਹਾ ਮਰਿ ॥
aavan jaan rahay janam na tahaa mar.
His comings and goings into this world comes to an end; then there is no birth and death for him.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਓਥੇ ਉਸ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਜਨਮ ਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਇਕੁ ਇਕੁ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਾਇਆ ॥
saahib sayvak ik ik daristaa-i-aa.
The devotee in that state of mind and the Master-God seem one and the same.
(ਇਸ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਅੱਪੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਕ-ਰੂਪ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥੧॥੨॥ ਸੁਧੁ
gur parsaad naanak sach samaa-i-aa. ||21||1||2|| suDhu
O’ Nanak, by the Guru’s grace, such a devotee merges in the eternal God. ||21||1||2||

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀਉ ਕਾ ਚਉਪਦਾ ਘਰੁ ੨ ਦੂਜਾ ॥

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਾਵ ਦੁਇ ਸਿੰਗ ਗੁੰਗ ਮੁਖ ਤਬ ਕੈਸੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਈਹੈ ॥
chaar paav du-ay sing gung mukh tab kaisay gun ga-eehai.
O’ my friend, if in the next life you are born with four feet, two horns and a mute mouth, then how would you sing God’s praises?
(ਕਿਸੇ ਪਸ਼ੂ-ਜੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੇ) ਚਾਰ ਪੈਰ ਤੇ ਦੋ ਸਿੰਙ ਹੋਣਗੇ, ਤੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਗੂੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾ ਸਕੇਂਗਾ?
ਊਠਤ ਬੈਠਤ ਠੇਗਾ ਪਰਿਹੈ ਤਬ ਕਤ ਮੂਡ ਲੁਕਈਹੈ ॥੧॥
oothat baithat thaygaa parihai tab kat mood luka-eehai. ||1||
When at every moment, whether sitting or standing, you are hit with stick blows, then where would you hide your head? ||1||
ਉਠਦਿਆਂ ਬੈਠਦਿਆਂ (ਤੇਰੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ) ਸੋਟਾ ਪਏਗਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਥੇ ਸਿਰ ਲੁਕਾਏਂਗਾ? ॥੧॥
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੈਲ ਬਿਰਾਨੇ ਹੁਈਹੈ ॥
har bin bail biraanay hu-eehai.
Without remembering God, your situation would be like a borrowed ox,
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਲਦ (ਆਦਿਕ ਪਸ਼ੂ ਬਣ ਕੇ) ਪਰ-ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂਗਾ,
ਫਾਟੇ ਨਾਕਨ ਟੂਟੇ ਕਾਧਨ ਕੋਦਉ ਕੋ ਭੁਸੁ ਖਈਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
faatay naakan tootay kaaDhan koda-o ko bhus kha-eehai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
with nostrils torn off by the chain, shoulders broken by the yoke, you would have only straw to eat. ||1||Pause||
(ਨੱਥ ਨਾਲ) ਨੱਕ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਾਏਗਾ, ਕੰਨ (ਜੂਲੇ ਨਾਲ) ਫਿੱਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹੋਣਗੇ ਤੇ ਕੋਧਰੇ ਦਾ ਭੋਹ ਖਾਏਂਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਰੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਡੋਲਤ ਬਨ ਮਹੀਆ ਅਜਹੁ ਨ ਪੇਟ ਅਘਈਹੈ ॥
saaro din dolat ban mahee-aa ajahu na payt agh-eehai.
All day long, you would wander in the pastures and even then your belly will not be satiated.
ਜੰਗਲ (ਜੂਹ) ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰਾ ਦਿਨ ਭਟਕਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਪੇਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜੇਗਾ।
ਜਨ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੋ ਕਹੋ ਨ ਮਾਨੋ ਕੀਓ ਅਪਨੋ ਪਈਹੈ ॥੨॥
jan bhagtan ko kaho na maano kee-o apno pa-eehai. ||2||
Now you are not following the advice of God’s devotees, then you would reap what you sow now. ||2||
ਹੁਣ ਐਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੂੰ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਬਚਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦਾ, (ਉਮਰ ਵਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਤੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਏਂਗਾ ॥੨॥
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਕਰਤ ਮਹਾ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਬੂਡੋ ਅਨਿਕ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਰਮਈਹੈ ॥
dukh sukh karat mahaa bharam boodo anik jon bharam-eehai.
Now, drowned in great doubt, you are passing your life experiencing pain and pleasure; consequently you would wander taking birth in numerous species.
ਹੁਣ ਭੈੜੇ ਹਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ, (ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕੇਂਗਾ।
ਰਤਨ ਜਨਮੁ ਖੋਇਓ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਓ ਇਹੁ ਅਉਸਰੁ ਕਤ ਪਈਹੈ ॥੩॥
ratan janam kho-i-o parabh bisri-o ih a-osar kat pa-eehai. ||3||
You have forsaken God and have wasted this jewel-like precious human life; when would you find such an opportunity again? ||3||
ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗੰਵਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਮਾ ਫੇਰ ਕਿਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ ॥੩॥
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਫਿਰਤ ਤੇਲਕ ਕੇ ਕਪਿ ਜਿਉ ਗਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਬਿਹਈਹੈ ॥
bharmat firat taylak kay kap ji-o gat bin rain bih-eehai.
Your entire night of human life would pass away revolving like an ox at the oil press or dancing like a juggler’s monkey without attaining freedom from vices
ਤੇਰੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ-ਰੂਪ ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਤੇਲੀ ਦੇ ਬਲਦ ਤੇ ਬਾਂਦਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਭਟਕਦਿਆਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੀ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਇਗੀ।
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੂੰਡ ਧੁਨੇ ਪਛੁਤਈਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥
kahat kabeer raam naam bin moond Dhunay pachhut-eehai. ||4||1||
Kabir says, without meditating on God’s Name, in the end you would repent pounding your head for wasting your life in vain. ||4||1||
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਆਖ਼ਰ ਸਿਰ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਛਤਾਵੇਂਗਾ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Goojree, Third beat:
ਮੁਸਿ ਮੁਸਿ ਰੋਵੈ ਕਬੀਰ ਕੀ ਮਾਈ ॥
mus mus rovai kabeer kee maa-ee.
Kabeer says, that my mother sobs, cries and bewails
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਦੀ ਮਾਂ ਡੁਸਕ ਡੁਸਕ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਏ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਕੈਸੇ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਰਘੁਰਾਈ ॥੧॥
ay baarik kaisay jeeveh raghuraa-ee. ||1||
O’ my God, how these children of Kabir are going to survive? ||1||
ਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ! (ਕਬੀਰ ਦੇ) ਇਹ ਅੰਞਾਣੇ ਬਾਲ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਊਣਗੇ? ॥੧॥
ਤਨਨਾ ਬੁਨਨਾ ਸਭੁ ਤਜਿਓ ਹੈ ਕਬੀਰ ॥
tannaa bunnaa sabh taji-o hai kabeer.
Because Kabeer has given up all his spinning and weaving,
ਕਬੀਰ ਨੇ (ਤਾਣਾ) ਤਣਨਾ ਤੇ (ਕੱਪੜਾ) ਉਣਨਾ ਸਭ ਕੁੱਝ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੀਓ ਸਰੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har kaa naam likh lee-o sareer. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and he is so busy in meditating on God, as if he has written God’s Name all over his body.||1||Pause||
ਤੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਤਾਗਾ ਬਾਹਉ ਬੇਹੀ ॥
jab lag taagaa baaha-o bayhee.
Kabir says, the time it takes for me to put the thread in the bobbin,
ਜਿਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੇ ਛੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਧਾਗਾ ਵਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ;
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਬਿਸਰੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥੨॥
tab lag bisrai raam sanayhee. ||2||
For that much time I forsake my beloved God. ||2||
ਉਤਨਾ ਚਿਰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਸਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਓਛੀ ਮਤਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਜੁਲਾਹਾ ॥
ochhee mat mayree jaat julaahaa.
My intellect is lowly and I am a weaver of lower social status by birth,
ਮੇਰੀ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਅਕਲ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਜਾਤ ਦਾ (ਨੀਵਾਂ ਗ਼ਰੀਬ) ਜੁਲਾਹਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਹਿਓ ਮੈ ਲਾਹਾ ॥੩॥
har kaa naam lahi-o mai laahaa. ||3||
but I have earned the wealth of the Name of God. ||3||
ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਨਫ਼ਾ (ਇਸ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਖੱਟ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥
kahat kabeer sunhu mayree maa-ee.
Kabeer says, listen, O my mother,
ਕਬੀਰ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ: ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਸੁਣ,
ਹਮਰਾ ਇਨ ਕਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਰਘੁਰਾਈ ॥੪॥੨॥
hamraa in kaa daataa ayk raghuraa-ee. ||4||2||
the same one God is the provider for me and my children. ||4||2||
