ਹੁਕਮੀ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਭਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukmee paiDhaa jaa-ay dargeh bhaanee-ai.
According to God’s will, one goes to His presence and receives honor.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਇਥੋਂ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਰਬਾਣੀਐ ॥੫॥
hukmay hee sir maar band rabaanee-ai. ||5||
It is also according to God’s will that soul receives punishment for the sins in the form of going through different births. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਰੱਬੀ ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥
ਲਾਹਾ ਸਚੁ ਨਿਆਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa sach ni-aa-o man vasaa-ee-ai.
The wealth of Naam is earned by enshrining truth and justice in the mind.
ਸੱਚੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਨਸਾਫ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਾਮ-ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਗਰਬੁ ਵਞਾਈਐ ॥੬॥
likhi-aa palai paa-ay garab vanjaa-ee-ai. ||6||
We should destroy our ego because one receives what is written in his lot. ||6||
ਮਾਣ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰ ਵਾਦਿ ਖਪਾਈਐ ॥
manmukhee-aa sir maar vaad khapaa-ee-ai.
The self-willed soul-bride is consumed by conflicts of Maya and is punished through the cycles of birth and deaths.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਗਵਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ) ਝਗੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦੀ) ਮਾਰ ਹੈ,
ਠਗਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
thag muthee koorhi-aar baneh chalaa-ee-ai. ||7||
Such a false soul-bride is deceived and is driven away bound in chains of worldly attachments. ||7||
ਕੂੜ ਦੀ ਵਪਾਰਨ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਠੱਗੀ, ਲੁੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਇਥੋਂ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਲ ਤੋਰੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸਾਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵਹੀ ॥
saahib ridai vasaa-ay na pachhotaavhee.
Enshrine God in your heart and you shall not have to repent in the end.
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ, (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਪਛੁਤਾਉਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਏਗਾ।
ਗੁਨਹਾਂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹੀ ॥੮॥
gunhaaN bakhsanhaar sabad kamaavahee. ||8||
Follow the Guru’s word and sing the praises of that God, who forgives sins. ||8||
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਘਾਲੀਐ ॥
naanak mangai sach gurmukh ghaalee-ai.
O’ God, Nanak begs for the gift of Your eternal Name so that I may make this effort of moulding myself according to the Guru’s teachings.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਘਾਲ-ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਾਂ।
ਮੈ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ ॥੯॥੧੬॥
mai tujh bin avar na ko-ay nadar nihaalee-ai. ||9||16||
Except You, I have no one else to look to; please bless me with Your glance of grace. ||9||16||
ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖ ॥੯॥੧੬॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਕਿਆ ਜੰਗਲੁ ਢੂਢੀ ਜਾਇ ਮੈ ਘਰਿ ਬਨੁ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ॥
ki-aa jangal dhoodhee jaa-ay mai ghar ban haree-aavlaa.
Why should I go searching God in the forests, when God is dwelling in my heart making it evergreen.
ਮੈਂ ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਜਦ ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਹਰੀਆਵਲਾ ਜੰਗਲ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਿ ਟਿਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਉਤਾਵਲਾ ॥੧॥
sach tikai ghar aa-ay sabad utaavalaa. ||1||
One who follows the Guru’s word and attunes to God; he instantaneously realizes God’s presence in his heart. ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੁਰਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਸੋਇ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
jah daykhaa tah so-ay avar na jaanee-ai.
Wherever I look, there He is; I know no one else.
ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਉਧਰ ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਹੀ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur kee kaar kamaa-ay mahal pachhaanee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By following the Guru’s teachings, one realizes God’s presence everywhere. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾ ਕੇ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ (ਨਿਵਾਸ) ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਈ ॥
aap milaavai sach taa man bhaav-ee.
When God imbues a person with His Love, then He becomes pleasing to that person’s heart.
ਜਦੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ (ਕਿਸੇ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚਲੈ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਇ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਈ ॥੨॥
chalai sadaa rajaa-ay ank samaava-ee. ||2||
That person then lives by His Will and merges into His Being. ||2||
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਗੋਦ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਈ ॥
sachaa saahib man vasai vasi-aa man so-ee.
One who realizes the Master-God in the heart, then he beholds that God permeating everywhere .
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਮਾਲਕ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੩॥
aapay day vadi-aa-ee-aa day tot na ho-ee. ||3||
God Himself grants greatness and His Gifts never run short. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਦੇਂਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਘਟਦੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੩॥
ਅਬੇ ਤਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਿਉ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
abay tabay kee chaakree ki-o dargeh paavai.
How can one realize God’s presence by worshiping ordinary people?
ਧਿਰ ਧਿਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਪਥਰ ਕੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਜੇ ਚੜੈ ਭਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਬੁਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
pathar kee bayrhee jay charhai bhar naal budaavai. ||4||
One who embarks on a boat of stone (one who lives a sinful life), drowns in the world ocean of vices. ||4||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ) ਪੱਥਰ ਦੀ ਬੇੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਵਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-) ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਆਪਨੜਾ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚੀਐ ਸਿਰੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
aapnarhaa man vaychee-ai sir deejai naalay.
If we surrender our intellect (mind) and ego to the Guru,
ਜੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅੱਗੇ) ਵੇਚ ਦੇਈਏ, ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਰ (ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ) ਭੀ ਦੇਈਏ
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਪਨਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਾਲੇ ॥੫॥
gurmukh vasat pachhaanee-ai apnaa ghar bhaalay. ||5||
then by searching our heart through the Guru’s teachings we recognize the wealth of Naam within. ||5||
ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਘਰ ਭਾਲ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ) ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਤਿਨਿ ਕਰਤੈ ਕੀਆ ॥
jaman marnaa aakhee-ai tin kartai kee-aa.
People talk about the birth and death which the Creator has created Himself.
ਹਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਮਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਥੀਆ ॥੬॥
aap gavaa-i-aa mar rahay fir maran na thee-aa. ||6||
Those who eradicate their ego and remain detached from Maya (worldly desires), do not fall in the cycle of birth and death. ||6||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ ॥੬॥
ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
saa-ee kaar kamaavnee Dhur kee furmaa-ee.
One does those deeds which are preordained for him.
ਧੁਰੋਂ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਜੇਹੜੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੀਵ ਉਹੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
jay man satgur day milai kin keemat paa-ee. ||7||
If one surrenders his mind to the true Guru and remains attuned to the love of God, then no one can estimate his worth. ||7||
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੭॥
ਰਤਨਾ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
ratnaa paarakh so Dhanee tin keemat paa-ee.
God Himself evaluates the jewel like virtues of that mind and He himself decides their worth.
ਉਹ ਮਾਲਕ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਆਪ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਪਰਖ ਪਰਖ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
naanak saahib man vasai sachee vadi-aa-ee. ||8||17||
O’ Nanak, true is the Glory of the one, who has realized God’s presence in his heart. ||8||17||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਜ਼ਤ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
jinHee naam visaari-aa doojai bharam bhulaa-ee.
Those who are lost in false illusions and have forsaken God’s Name,
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਹੋਰ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ) ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੂਲੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਡਾਲੀ ਲਗੇ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
mool chhod daalee lagay ki-aa paavahi chhaa-ee. ||1||
their condition is like those who forsake the strong trunk of a tree (God) and cling to a mere branch (Maya); they would obtain nothing but dust. ||1||
ਉਹ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਰੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂਲ (-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ) ਡਾਲੀਆਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ) ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗ ਗਏ ਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥੧॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਜੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
bin naavai ki-o chhootee-ai jay jaanai ko-ee.
If someone understands that no one can be saved from the affects of Maya without meditating on Naam,
ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝ ਲਏ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੀਦਾ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh ho-ay ta chhootee-ai manmukh pat kho-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
then by following the Guru’s teachings that person escapes from the love for Maya; the self-willed persons lose their honor. ||1||Pause||
ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਏਕੋ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਭਾਈ ॥
jinHee ayko sayvi-aa pooree mat bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, perfect is the intellect of those who meditate on God.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਕਲ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਉਕਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੀ।
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਾ ਜਨ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥
aad jugaad niranjanaa jan har sarnaa-ee. ||2||
Such devotees remain in God’s refuge who has been there since even before the beginning of the ages and who is not affected by Maya. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਉਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਈ ॥
saahib mayraa ayk hai avar nahee bhaa-ee.
O’ brother, my Master is the one and only God, except Him there is none other.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਬੇ-ਮਿਸਾਲ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਚੇ ਪਰਥਾਈ ॥੩॥
kirpaa tay sukh paa-i-aa saachay parthaa-ee. ||3||
I have enjoyed celestial peace by the grace and support of the eternal God. ||3||
ਜੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ-ਪਰਨੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕੇਤੀ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
gur bin kinai na paa-i-o kaytee kahai kahaa-ay.
No matter what people say or quote, but no one has ever realized God without the Guru’s teachings.
ਬਥੇਰੀ ਲੋਕਾਈ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਰਸਤੇ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਵਾਟੜੀਂ ਸਚੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੪॥
aap dikhaavai vaatrheeN sachee bhagat drirh-aa-ay. ||4||
On His own, God shows the right way to realize Him and implants His true devotional worship within the person. ||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
manmukh jay samjaa-ee-ai bhee ujharh jaa-ay.
A self-willed person goes astray, even if a right path is shown to him.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ (ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤਾ) ਸਮਝਾਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਭੀ ਕਰੀਏ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਛੂਟਸੀ ਮਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਸਮਾਏ ॥੫॥
bin har naam na chhootsee mar narak samaa-ay. ||5||
Without meditating on God’s Name, that person will not be saved from following the wrong path and will suffer immense pain as if he is in hell. ||5||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਹ ਇਸ ਕੁਰਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਨੋ,) ਨਰਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਭਰਮਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
janam marai bharmaa-ee-ai har naam na layvai.
One who does not meditate on God’s Name, keeps on wandering in the cycles of birth and death.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਉਹ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai bin gur kee sayvai. ||6||
Without following the Guru’s teachings, the worth of God’s Name cannot be realized. ||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੬॥
