ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਕਹਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
keemat paa-ay na kahi-aa jaa-ay.
O’ God, Your creation cannot be estimated or fully described.
ਤੇਰੇ ਵਡੱਪਣ ਦਾ ਅੰਦਾਜ਼ਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, (ਇਹ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਕੇਡਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈਂ
ਕਹਣੈ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
kahnai vaalay tayray rahay samaa-ay. ||1||
Those who try to describe You, lost their own identity and merged in You. ||1||
ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ (ਆਪਾ ਭੁੱਲ ਕੇ) ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ (ਹੀ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਵਡੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਿਬਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰਾ ॥
vaday mayray saahibaa gahir gambheeraa gunee gaheeraa.
O’ my great Master, You are immensely generous and ocean of virtues.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਤੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ) ਡੂੰਘਾ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਹੈਂ, ਤੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਕੋਈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਤਾ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਚੀਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ko-ee na jaanai tayraa kaytaa kayvad cheeraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
No one knows the greatness of Your expanse. ||1||Pause||
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਕਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
sabh surtee mil surat kamaa-ee.
In order to estimate your greatness, many contemplated upon You in unison with many others,
ਸਮਾਧੀਆਂ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਜੋੜਨ ਦੇ ਯਤਨ ਕੀਤੇ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤੇ;
ਸਭ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
sabh keemat mil keemat paa-ee.
and many philosophers tried to estimate Your worth with help of many others.
ਸਮੂਹ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਕੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਇਆ।
ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀ ਗੁਰ ਗੁਰ ਹਾਈ ॥
gi-aanee Dhi-aanee gur gur haa-ee.
The learned ones, the experts in meditation, the wise ones and their elders, all tried to describe Your greatness,
ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ (ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ-ਵੇੱਤਾ) ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨਾਂ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
kahan na jaa-ee tayree til vadi-aa-ee. ||2||
but could not express even an iota of Your Greatness. ||2||
ਪਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਤਨਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕੇ
ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥
sabh sat sabh tap sabh chang-aa-ee-aa.
All charitable deeds, all austerities, all virtues,
ਸਾਰੇ ਭਲੇ ਕੰਮ, ਸਾਰੇ ਤਪ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਗੁਣ,
ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ॥
siDhaa purkhaa kee-aa vadi-aa-ee-aaN.
and all the greatness of the siddhas, the proficient beings,
ਸਿੱਧ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ (ਰਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ) ਵੱਡੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਕੰਮ-
ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥
tuDh vin siDhee kinai na paa-ee-aa.
without Your Grace, no one could achieve any of these powers.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਈ।
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥
karam milai naahee thaak rahaa-ee-aa. ||3||
When, by Your grace, they attain these powers, no one can stop them. ||3||
ਤੇਰੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਕੋਈ ਜਣਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਹਾਉ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਬੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਆਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਬੇਚਾਰਾ ॥
aakhan vaalaa ki-aa baychaaraa.
O’ God, how a helpless human being can describe Your virtues?
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਸਕੇ?
ਸਿਫਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
siftee bharay tayray bhandaaraa.
Your creation is full of Your virtues.
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ॥
jis tooN deh tisai ki-aa chaaraa.
Whom you bless with these virtues, nobody has the power to obstruct his path
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਪਾਣ ਲਈ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਲ ਸਕਦਾ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak sach savaaranhaaraa. ||4||1||
O’ Nanak, God Himself is the embellisher of that fortunate one. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਆਖ-ਤੂੰ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ (ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ) ਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਪ ਹੈਂ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਆਖਾ ਜੀਵਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
aakhaa jeevaa visrai mar jaa-o.
When I utter His Name, I feel spiritually alive but if I don’t, I feel spiritually dead.
ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਜੀਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੋਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
aakhan a-ukhaa saachaa naa-o.
(In spite of knowing that), to meditate on His Name seems so difficult.
(ਇਹ ਪਤਾ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ (ਇਕ) ਔਖਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਭੂਖ ॥
saachay naam kee laagai bhookh.
When one feels a strong urge to remember Him with love and devotion,
(ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਤੁ ਭੂਖੈ ਖਾਇ ਚਲੀਅਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥੧॥
tit bhookhai khaa-ay chalee-ahi dookh. ||1||
then by satisfying that urge, all one’s sufferings end. ||1||
ਇਸ ਭੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ (ਨਾਮ-ਭੋਜਨ) ਖਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
so ki-o visrai mayree maa-ay.
O’ my mother, why should one forsake that God?
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ! ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sacha sahib saachai naa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
who is the true Master and whose greatness is everlasting. ||1||Pause||
ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਮ ੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
saachay naam kee til vadi-aa-ee.
Trying to describe even an iota of the Greatness of the True Master,
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਤਾ ਜਿਤਨੀ ਭੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ
ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
aakh thakay keemat nahee paa-ee.
people have grown weary but they have not been able to describe.
ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਥੱਕ ਗਏ ਹਨ ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ
ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
jay sabh mil kai aakhan paahi.
Even if all the people were to meet together and describe his greatness,
ਜੇ (ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਰਲ ਕੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ) ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਨ,
ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
vadaa na hovai ghaat na jaa-ay. ||2||
He would not become any greater or any lesser. ||2||
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ, ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਘਟ।
ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
naa oh marai na hovai sog.
He does not die, nor there is a reason to mourn.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਦੇ ਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਸੋਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਭੋਗੁ ॥
dayNdaa rahai na chookai bhog.
He continues to give and His Provisions are never exhausted.
ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਦਾ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਕਦੇ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ
ਗੁਣੁ ਏਹੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
gun ayho hor naahee ko-ay.
His greatest virtue is that there is no other like Him.
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਵੱਡੀ ਖ਼ੂਬੀ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
naa ko ho-aa naa ko ho-ay. ||3||
There has never been anyone like Him and there never shall be. ||3||
ਉਸ ਵਰਗਾ ਅਜੇ ਤਕ) ਨਾਹ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਨਾਹ ਕਦੇ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ॥੩॥
ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
jayvad aap tayvad tayree daat.
O’ God, Your gifts are as great as you are.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਡਾ (ਬੇਅੰਤ ਤੂੰ) ਆਪ ਹੈਂ, ਉਤਨੀ (ਬੇਅੰਤ) ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
jin din kar kai keetee raat.
It is You who have created day and night as well.
(ਤੂੰ ਐਸਾ ਹੈਂ) ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਦਿਨ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਾਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ।
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥
khasam visaareh tay kamjaat.
Those who forget such a Master-God are vile and despicable.
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੈੜੇ ਅਸਲੇ ਵਾਲੇ (ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ) ਹਨ ਜੋ ਐਸੇ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naavai baajh sanaat. ||4||2||
O’ Nanak, people without Naam are wretched outcasts. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਵ ਨੀਚ ਹਨ ॥੪॥੨॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਜੇ ਦਰਿ ਮਾਂਗਤੁ ਕੂਕ ਕਰੇ ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ॥
jay dar maaNgat kook karay mahlee khasam sunay.
If a seeker asks God for something, He listens to his demand.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਮਹਲ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ) ਸੁਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਵੈ ਧੀਰਕ ਭਾਵੈ ਧਕੇ ਏਕ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੧॥
bhaavai Dheerak bhaavai Dhakay ayk vadaa-ee day-ay. ||1||
Whether God grants his demand or not; the seeker is honored by God acknowledging his request. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਦੇਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਧੱਕਾ ਦੇ ਦੇਵੇ, ਉਸਦੀ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਸੁਣ ਲੈਣ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੀ ਦੇ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਾਣਹੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਨ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਜਾਤੀ ਆਗੈ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaanhu jot na poochho jaatee aagai jaat na hay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Recognize Divine Light within all and do not ask anyone his social status; it has no place in God’s court. ||1||Pause||
ਸਭਨਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤ ਜਾਣ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾ ਪੁੱਛੋ ਅੱਗੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
aap karaa-ay aap karay-i.
He Himself does everything and gets everything done.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਪੁਕਾਰ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਪੁਕਾਰ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪਿ ਉਲਾਮ੍ਹ੍ਹੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥
aap ulaamayH chit Dharay-ay.
He Himself considers our complaints.
ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਗਿਲੇ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
jaa tooN karanhaar kartaar.
O’ my Creator, when You are capable of doing everything,
ਹੇ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ! ਜਦ ਤੂੰ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਸਮਰੱਥ ਹੈਂ,
ਕਿਆ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੀ ਕਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
ki-aa muhtaajee ki-aa sansaar. ||2||
then why should one care for the world or depend upon it? ||2||
ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਜਗਤ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕੁਝ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੨॥
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ॥
aap upaa-ay aapay day-ay.
God Himself creates all living beings and Himself provides them sustenance.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ ਆਦਿਕ) ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
aapay durmat maneh karay-i.
He Himself restrains people’s bad intellect.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਰਜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
gur parsaad vasai man aa-ay.
When by Guru’s grace God comes to dwell in somebody’s heart,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੁਖੁ ਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
dukh anHayraa vichahu jaa-ay. ||3||
then that person’s sorrow and darkness of ignorance are dispelled. ||3||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਾਚੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਆਪਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
saach pi-aaraa aap karay-i.
He Himself infuses some with the love for the meditation on Naam
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ);
ਅਵਰੀ ਕਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
avree ka-o saach na day-ay.
He doesn’t bless those with the gift of meditation who lack the love for God.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਅਜੇ ਘਾਟ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ।
ਜੇ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੇਇ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਗੈ ਪੂਛ ਨ ਲੇਇ ॥੪॥੩॥
jay kisai day-ay vakhaanai naanak aagai poochh na lay-ay. ||4||3||
Nanak says, if God bestows a person with the gift of Naam then that person is not held accountable ||4||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗਦਾ ॥੪॥੩॥

Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
ਤਾਲ ਮਦੀਰੇ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਘਾਟ ॥
taal madeeray ghat kay ghaat.
The thoughts in the mind are like cymbals and ankle-bells.
ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸੰਕਲਪ ਵਿਕਲਪ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਛੈਣੇ ਤੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਘੁੰਘਰੂ ਹਨ,
ਦੋਲਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਜ ॥
dolak dunee-aa vaajeh vaaj.
The worldly love is like a drum and all these are playing the beat.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਢੋਲਕੀ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
ਨਾਰਦੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
naarad naachai kal kaa bhaa-o.
Under the effect of Kalyug the mind, devoid of Naam, dances like sage Narad.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸੁੰਞਾ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਤੇ ਨੱਚ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ।
ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕਹ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥
jatee satee kah raakhahi paa-o. ||1||
There is no place left for the celibates and the men of truth. ||1||
ਜਤ ਸਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਿਹਾ ॥੧॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
naanak naam vitahu kurbaan.
O’ Nanak, dedicate yourself Naam.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੋ।
ਅੰਧੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhee dunee-aa saahib jaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without Naam the entire world has become spiritually blind; only the Master knows all. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਕੁਛ ਜਾਨਣਹਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
guroo paashu fir chaylaa khaa-ay.
Instead of serving the Guru, a disciple depends on the Guru for his sustenance.
ਚੇਲੇ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ) ਸਗੋਂ ਚੇਲਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਉਦਰ-ਪੂਰਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਾਮਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥
taam pareet vasai ghar aa-ay.
One becomes a disciple just for the sake of sustenance.
ਰੋਟੀ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਚੇਲਾ ਆ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
