O’ God, it is You, and You alone who is eternal .
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ), ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ, ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ l

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਨ ਦਾਦੇ ਦਿਹੰਦ ਆਦਮੀ ॥
na daaday dihand aadmee.
Neither the men who do justice on the earth, will stay here forever.
ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਇਨਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ (ਭਾਵ, ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਨਿਬੇੜਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਆਦਮੀ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ,
ਨ ਸਪਤ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ॥
na sapat jayr jimee.
Nor the inhabitants of nether worlds are eternal.
ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਸੱਤ ਪਤਾਲ ਦੇ ਜੀਵ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥
asat ayk digar ku-ee.
Who else is there to live forever?
ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋਰ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ?
ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ॥੩॥

O’ God, it is You and You alone.

ਨ ਸੂਰ ਸਸਿ ਮੰਡਲੋ ॥
na soor sas mandlo.
Neither the sun, nor the moon, nor the planets,
ਨਾ ਸੂਰਜ, ਨਾਹ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ, ਨਾਹ ਇਹ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਆਕਾਸ਼,
ਨ ਸਪਤ ਦੀਪ ਨਹ ਜਲੋ ॥
na sapat deep nah jalo.
nor the seven continents, nor the oceans,
ਨਾਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਸੱਤ ਦੀਪ, ਨਾਹ ਪਾਣੀ,
ਅੰਨ ਪਉਣ ਥਿਰੁ ਨ ਕੁਈ ॥
ann pa-un thir na ku-ee.
nor food, nor the wind – nothing is permanent.
ਨਾ ਅੰਨ, ਨਾਹ ਹਵਾ-ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ॥੪॥

O’ God, it is You and You alone.

ਨ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਦਸਤ ਆ ਕਸੇ ॥
na rijak dasat aa kasay.
The sustenance of all the creatures is under the control of no one except God.
(ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦਾ) ਰਿਜ਼ਕ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਹਮਾ ਰਾ ਏਕੁ ਆਸ ਵਸੇ ॥
hamaa raa ayk aas vasay.
The hopes of all rest in the One (God).
ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਬੱਸ, ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਹੈ।
ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕੁ ਦਿਗਰ ਕੁਈ ॥
asat ayk digar ku-ee.
O’ God, it is You alone who is eternal, and no one else.
ਹੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹੈਂ, ਹੋਰ ਹੈ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਏਕ ਤੁਈ ਏਕੁ ਤੁਈ ॥੫॥

O’ God, it is You and You alone.

ਪਰੰਦਏ ਨ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਜਰ ॥
paranday na giraah jar.
The birds have no money in their pockets (means to buy food).
ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਗੰਢੇ-ਪੱਲੇ ਧਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਦਰਖਤ ਆਬ ਆਸ ਕਰ ॥
darkhat aab aas kar.
They place their hopes on trees and water.
ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਹੋਏ) ਰੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੀ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਿਹੰਦ ਸੁਈ ॥
dihand su-ee.
He alone is their provider.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਉਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੈ।

O’ God, it is You and You alone.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਿਜ਼ਕ-ਦਾਤਾ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ l

ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਲਾਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
naanak lilaar likhi-aa so-ay.
O’ Nanak, that destiny which is pre-ordained.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਮੇਟਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
mayt na saakai ko-ay.
no one can erase that.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਮਿਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਕਲਾ ਧਰੈ ਹਿਰੈ ਸੁਈ ॥
kalaa Dharai hirai su-ee.
God infuses strength, and He takes it away again.
ਉਹ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਸਥਾਪਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਲੈ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

O’ God, it is You and You alone.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਤਿਆ ਦੇਣ ਤੇ ਖੋਹ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਇਕ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ l

ਸਚਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
sachaa tayraa hukam gurmukh jaani-aa.
O’ God, True is Your Command, but it is known only to the Guru’s followers.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!, ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥
gurmatee aap gavaa-ay sach pachhaani-aa.
O’ the eternal God, the one who has eradicated selfishness and conceit through the Guru’s Teachings, has realized You.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਨੀਸਾਣਿਆ ॥
sach tayraa darbaar sabad neesaani-aa.
O’ God, true is Your Court, and to enter in it, the Guru’s word is the identification mark.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਤਕ ਅੱਪੜਨ ਲਈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥
sachaa sabad veechaar sach samaani-aa.
Those who reflected on the Divine Word, merge into the Truth.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸੱਚ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣਿਆ ॥
manmukh sadaa koorhi-aar bharam bhoolaani-aa.
The self-willed people are always false; they are deluded by doubt.
ਆਪ ਹੁਦਰੇ ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ, ਵਹਿਮ ਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਾ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਸਟਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਸਾਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
vistaa andar vaas saad na jaani-aa.
They live their life in sinful pursuits, and they do not know the relish of Naam.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਸੇਬਾ ਗੰਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ) ਆਨੰਦ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝ ਸਕੇ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
vin naavai dukh paa-ay aavan jaani-aa.
Without meditating on God’s Name, they suffer in the cycles of birth and death.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਖੁ ਆਪਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਖੋਟਾ ਖਰਾ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ॥੧੩॥
naanak paarakh aap jin khotaa kharaa pachhaani-aa. ||13||
O Nanak, God Himself is the Judge, who distinguishes the counterfeit (bad person) from the genuine (good persons).
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ l

ਸੀਹਾ ਬਾਜਾ ਚਰਗਾ ਕੁਹੀਆ ਏਨਾ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਘਾਹ ॥
seehaa baajaa chargaa kuhee-aa aynaa khavaalay ghaah.
God can make the meat eating tigers, hawks, eagles and falcons eat grass.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ, ਬਾਜਾਂ, ਚਰਗਾਂ, ਕੁਹੀਆ (ਆਦਿਕ ਮਾਸਾਹਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਚਾਹੇ ਤਾਂ) ਘਾਹ ਖਵਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਘਾਹੁ ਖਾਨਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਏਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਰਾਹ ॥
ghaahu khaan tinaa maas khavaalay ayhi chalaa-ay raah.
And those animals which eat grass-He could make them eat meat. He could make this as their way of life.
ਜੋ ਘਾਹ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਸ ਖਵਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ-ਸੋ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੋਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਦੀਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਟਿਬੇ ਦੇਖਾਲੇ ਥਲੀ ਕਰੇ ਅਸਗਾਹ ॥
nadee-aa vich tibay daykhaalay thalee karay asgaah.
He could raise dry land from the rivers, and turn the deserts into bottomless oceans.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਵਗਦੀਆਂ) ਨਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਟਿੱਬੇ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰੇਤਲੇ ਥਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕੀੜਾ ਥਾਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਲਸਕਰ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਆਹ ॥
keerhaa thaap day-ay paatisaahee laskar karay su-aah.
He could appoint a lowliest person as king, and reduce an army to ashes.
ਇੱਕ ਕੀਟ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਥਾਪਨ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਫੌਜ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਰਾਖ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਲੈ ਸਾਹਾ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਤਾ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਹ ॥
jaytay jee-a jeeveh lai saahaa jeevaalay taa ke asaah.
All creatures live by breathing, but He could keep them alive, even without the breath.
ਸਾਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਧਾਰੀ ਸਵਾਸ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਪਰ ਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ, ਜੀਊਂਦੇ ਰੱਖਣੇ ਚਾਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ‘ਸਾਹ’ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਕੀਹ ਮੁਥਾਜੀ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਸਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਤਿਉ ਦੇਇ ਗਿਰਾਹ ॥੧॥
naanak ji-o ji-o sachay bhaavai ti-o ti-o day-ay giraah.
O’ Nanak, God provides sustenance to the creatures as it pleases Him.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਤਿਵੇਂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਇਕਿ ਮਾਸਹਾਰੀ ਇਕਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
ik maashaaree ik tarin khaahi.
Some creatures eat meat, while others eat grass.
ਕਈ ਜੀਵ ਮਾਸ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਕਈ ਘਾਹ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਨਾ ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
iknaa chhateeh amrit paahi.
There are some who enjoy many kinds of delicacies,
ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਆਦਲੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਕਿ ਮਿਟੀਆ ਮਹਿ ਮਿਟੀਆ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
ik mitee-aa meh mitee-aa khaahi.
While others live in the dirt and eat dirt.
ਤੇ ਕਈ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿ ਕੇ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਪਉਣ ਸੁਮਾਰੀ ਪਉਣ ਸੁਮਾਰਿ ॥
ik pa-un sumaaree pa-un sumaar.
Some who practice breath control, they remain busy in breathing exercises.
ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਯਾਮ ਦੇ ਅੱਭਿਆਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਯਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਇਕਿ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਮ ਆਧਾਰਿ ॥
ik nirankaaree naam aaDhaar.
Some worshippers of the Formless God, live by the support of His Name.
ਕਈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਉਪਾਸ਼ਕ (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੀਵੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
jeevai daataa marai na ko-ay.
If one trusts that God is always there, then one cannot die a spiritual death.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ) ਨਹੀਂ ਮਰਦਾ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਠੇ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak muthay jaahi naahee man so-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, those who do not enshrine God within their minds are deluded.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਜੀਵ ਠੱਗੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ |

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਮਿ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
pooray gur kee kaar karam kamaa-ee-ai.
It is by the grace of God that we follow the teachings of the perfect Guru
.ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
gurmatee aap gavaa-ay naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
Through the Guru’s Teachings, we eliminate our selfishness and conceit, and meditate on God’s Name with loving devotion.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥
doojee kaarai lag janam gavaa-ee-ai.
Forsaking God and engaging ourselves in other (worldly) pursuits, we simply waste away our human birth.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ) ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝਿਆਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਭ ਵਿਸੁ ਪੈਝੈ ਖਾਈਐ ॥
vin naavai sabh vis paijhai khaa-ee-ai
Forsaking Naam, all we eat and wear is like poison for our spiritual life.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਪਹਿਨੀ ਖਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ (ਸਮਾਨ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥
sachaa sabad saalaahi sach samaa-ee-ai.
Praising and following the true word of the Guru, we merge with God.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਗਾਵਿਆਂ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਈਐ ॥
vin satgur sayvay naahee sukh nivaas fir fir aa-ee-ai.
without following the true Guru’s teachings, we cannot live in peace, and we keep wandering in the cycles of birth and death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ, ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖੋਟੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
dunee-aa khotee raas koorh kamaa-ee-ai.
The love for the world is a false capital; Investing this counterfeit capital, we earn only falsehood in the world.
ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ) ਖੋਟੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਕਮਾਈ ਕੂੜ (ਦਾ ਵਪਾਰ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਖਰਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧੪॥
naanak sach kharaa saalaahi pat si-o jaa-ee-ai. ||14||
O’ Nanak, by singing the Praises of the immaculate God, we depart from the world with honor.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਿਰੋਲ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਏਥੋਂ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ l

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਵਾਵਹਿ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਲਿ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥
tuDh bhaavai taa vaaveh gaavahi tuDh bhaavai jal naaveh.
When it pleases You, some people play music and sing Your praises; when it pleases You, they bathe in holy water.
ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਈ ਜੀਵ ਸਾਜ਼ ਵਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਲ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
