ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਹੈਨਿ ਨਿਰਧਨੁ ਹੋਰੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੨੬॥
naanak naam ratay say Dhanvant hain nirDhan hor sansaar. ||26||
O’ Nanak, those who are imbued with love for God’s Name are spiritually wealthy, and the rest of the world is spiritually poor. ||26||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਹਨ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਕੰਗਾਲ ਹੈ ॥੨੬॥
ਜਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਠਵਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥
jan kee tayk har naam har bin naavai thavar na thaa-o.
God’s Name is the only support of His devotees; they do not think of any other refuge beside God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ) ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁੱਝਦਾ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥
gurmatee naa-o man vasai sehjay sahj samaa-o.
God’s Name abides in their minds by following the Guru’s teachings, and they intuitively remain merged in a state of spiritual poise.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਲੀਨਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਭਾਉ ॥
vadbhaagee naam Dhi-aa-i-aa ahinis laagaa bhaa-o.
By good fortune they have remembered God’s Name, and they always remain imbued in His love.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ (ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ) ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਧੂੜਿ ਤਿਨ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੨੭॥
jan naanak mangai Dhoorh tin ha-o sad kurbaanai jaa-o. ||27||
Devotee Nanak craves for their humble service, and says, I am always dedicated to them. ||27||
ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਸਦਾ) ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੨੭॥
ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤੀ ਕਰੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
lakh cha-oraaseeh maydnee tisnaa jaltee karay pukaar.
This earth with millions of living beings is burning in the fire of worldly desires and is crying for help.
ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲੱਖ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਇਹ ਧਰਤੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਦੀ ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਸੜ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਇਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਅੰਤੀ ਵਾਰ ॥
ih moh maa-i-aa sabh pasri-aa naal chalai na antee vaar.
This love for materialism is widespread but this Maya does not accompany anyone after death.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਪਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਪਰ ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ) ਅਖ਼ੀਰਲੇ ਵੇਲੇ (ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਭੀ) ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
bin har saaNt na aavee kis aagai karee pukaar.
No one can find inner peace and tranquility without God’s Name, so to whom may I cry for help?
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਵਲੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ (ਭੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ। ਕਿਸ ਅੱਗੇ ਮੈਂ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਂ?
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿਚਾਰੁ ॥
vadbhaagee satgur paa-i-aa boojhi-aa barahm bichaar.
With great fortune those who followed the Guru’s teachings, they understood the Divine wisdom.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਿਆ।
ਤਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਭ ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨੮॥
tisnaa agan sabh bujh ga-ee jan naanak har ur Dhaar. ||28||
O’ Devotee Nanak, by enshrining God in their heart, the fire of worldly desires within them got quenched. ||28||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਅੱਗ ਬੁੱਝ ਗਈ ॥੨੮॥
ਅਸੀ ਖਤੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
asee khatay bahut kamaavday ant na paaraavaar.
O’ God, we commit so many blunders that there is no end or limit to our mistakes.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ, ਪਾਰਲਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਲੈਹੁ ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਵਡ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰੁ ॥
har kirpaa kar kai bakhas laihu ha-o paapee vad gunahgaar.
O’ God, please be merciful and forgive me; I am a sinner, and a great culprit.
ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਤੂੰ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਲੈ, ਮੈਂ ਪਾਪੀ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਨਾਹਗਾਰ ਹਾਂ।
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਰ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਤੂੰ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
har jee-o laykhai vaar na aavee tooN bakhas milaavanhaar.
O’ revered God, if You reckon my deeds, even my turn for forgiveness would never come; by forgiving me, You are capable to unite me with Yourself.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀ! ਮੇਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਲੇਖੇ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਵਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ, ਤੂੰ ਭੁੱਲਾਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਠਾਲ ਮਿਲਾਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਤੁਠੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲਿਆ ਸਭ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਕਟਿ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
gur tuthai har parabh mayli-aa sabh kilvikh kat vikaar.
Upon whom the Guru got pleased, he eradicated all the sins and vices of that person and united him with God.
(ਜਿਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਏ ,ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਿ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਜਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਜੈਕਾਰੁ ॥੨੯॥
jinaa har har naam Dhi-aa-i-aa jan naanak tinH jaikaar. ||29||
O’ Devotee Nanak, those who have lovingly remembered God, they are honored both here and hereafter. ||29||
ਹੇ ਦਾਸ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਆਈ ਹੈ ॥੨੯॥
ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਜੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
vichhurh vichhurh jo milay satgur kay bhai bhaa-ay.
After being separated from God birth after birth, those who have met Him again by embracing the revered fear of the true Guru,
(ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਵਿੱਛੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਗਏ,
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥
janam maran nihchal bha-ay gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ay.
they have become free from the cycles of birth and death by remembering God through the Guru’s teachings.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਹੀਰੇ ਰਤਨ ਲਭੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
gur saaDhoo sangat milai heeray ratan labhaNniH.
Those who are blessed with the company of the saint Guru, acquire the precious divine virtues.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਉਸ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲਕਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੩੦॥
naanak laal amolkaa gurmukh khoj lahaNniH. ||30||
O’ Nanak, the Guru’s followers attain the invaluable Name of God by discovering it in the holy congregation. ||30||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਅੱਤ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਖੋਜ ਕੇ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩੦॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਧਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
manmukh naam na chayti-o Dhig jeevan Dhig vaas.
The self-willed persons have not remembered God with adoration, therefore accursed is their life and their living in the world,
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੀਊਣਾ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ-ਵਸੇਬਾ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੈਨਣਾ ਸੋ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਵਸਿਓ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥
jis daa ditaa khaanaa painnaa so man na vasi-o guntaas.
whose bounties they consume, that God, the treasure of virtues, is not enshrined in their heart.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਹੀਂ ਟਿਕਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅੰਨ ਅਤੇ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਉਹ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
ih man sabad na baydi-o ki-o hovai ghar vaas.
Their mind is not focused on the Guru’s word, how can they reside in God’s presence?
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਮਨ (ਕਦੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜਦਾ। ਫਿਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੋਵੇ?
ਮਨਮੁਖੀਆ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿ ਮੁਈਆਸੁ ॥
manmukhee-aa duhaaganee aavan jaan mu-ee-aas.
The self-willed people remain separated from God and keep on going through the cycle of birth and death and remain spiritually dead.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਬਦ-ਨਸੀਬ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਜਨਮ-ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਈਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰੀਆਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਮਣੀ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥
gurmukh naam suhaag hai mastak manee likhi-aas.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings, God’s Name makes them very fortunate and is like a sign of glory written on their forehead.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹਨ ,ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਸੁਹਾਗ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
har har naam ur Dhaari-aa har hirdai kamal pargaas.
They have enshrined God’s Name in their heart, and the lotus of their heart remains blossoming.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦਾ ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
satgur sayvan aapnaa ha-o sad balihaaree taas.
I am forever dedicated to those who always follow their true Guru’s teachings.
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੩੧॥
naanak tin mukh ujlay jin antar naam pargaas. ||31||
O’ Nanak, the faces of those are always radiant, whose hearts are enlightened with God’s Name. ||31||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩੧॥
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਸਿਝੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
sabad marai so-ee jan sijhai bin sabdai mukat na ho-ee.
Only that person who controls his vices through the Guru’s word, succeeds in life; freedom from vices cannot be achieved without following the Guru’s word.
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ) ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਰਜ ਵਿਗੋਈ ॥
bhaykh karahi baho karam vigutay bhaa-ay doojai paraj vigo-ee.
Those who adorn holy garbs for show and perform ritualistic deeds, are ruined; in fact the entire world is being wasted by the love of duality.
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਲੋਚੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩੨॥
naanak bin satgur naa-o na paa-ee-ai jay sa-o lochai ko-ee. ||32||
O’ Nanak, Naam is not attained without following the true Guru’s teachings, even though one may yearn for it hundreds of times. ||32||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਪਿਆ ਕਰੇ ॥੩੨॥
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਅਤਿ ਵਡ ਊਚਾ ਊਚੀ ਹੂ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
har kaa naa-o at vad oochaa oochee hoo oochaa ho-ee.
God’s Name is very lofty; it is the highest of the high.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਪੜਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਲੋਚੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
aparh ko-ay na sak-ee jay sa-o lochai ko-ee.
No one can reach it, even when one may long for it, hundreds of times.
ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੌ ਵਾਰੀ ਤਾਂਘ ਕਰੇ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮਣੇ ਤਕ ਕੋਈ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮੁਖਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਕਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਭਵੈ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ॥
mukh sanjam hachhaa na hova-ee kar bhaykh bhavai sabh ko-ee.
Every saint walks around wearing a religious robe, but no one’s life becomes righteous just by talking about self-discipline.
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਾਧੂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵਾ ਪਹਿਨ ਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਪਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਕਰਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਿਰੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਜਾਇ ਚੜੈ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur kee pa-orhee jaa-ay charhai karam paraapat ho-ee.
The Guru’s teaching is like a ladder, by climbing which one realizes God; but this ladder of Guru’s teaching is attained only through God’s grace.
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ) ਪੌੜੀ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤਕ) ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਇਹ ‘ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ’ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ) ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਇ ਵਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
antar aa-ay vasai gur sabad veechaarai ko-ay.
God manifests within that person who reflects on the Guru’s word.
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
