ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਰਤਾ ਐਸਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥
aapay khayl karay sabh kartaa aisaa boojhai ko-ee. ||3||
but only a rare person understands that the Creator-God Himself executes all His worldly plays. ||3||
ਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਣ ਜਾਂ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ-ਇਹ ਭੇਤ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੩॥
ਨਾਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਦੁਨੀ ਪਰੀਤਾ ॥
naa-o parbhaatai sabad Dhi-aa-ee-ai chhodahu dunee pareetaa.
(O’ my friends), in the early hours of the morning, lovingly remember God through the Guru’s word and abandon the love of worldly things.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਹੀ (ਉੱਠ ਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤਿਆਗੋ ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਜਗਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਜੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੯॥
paranvat naanak daasan daasaa jag haari-aa tin jeetaa. ||4||9||
Nanak, the servant of God’s devotees, prays that in this world, those who did not remember God have lost and those who remembered God have won the purpose of life. ||4||9||
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਬੰਦਾ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ) ਜਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੯॥

Raag Parbhati, First Guru:
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਧਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥
man maa-i-aa man Dhaa-i-aa man pankhee aakaas.
The mind is so obsessed with worldly riches that it keeps running after it, and chases after it like a bird flying in the sky,
ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੀ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੰਛੀ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਉਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਸਕਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਵੁਠਾ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
taskar sabad nivaari-aa nagar vuthaa saabaas.
but when the thieves (vices) are driven out of the body by reflecting on the Guru’s word, then it is inhabited with virtues and one is being congratulated.
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਚੋਰ (ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਕੱਢ ਦੇਈਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਸਰੀਰ-ਨਗਰ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਮਨ ਬਾਹਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਕੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਸੋਭਾ-ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
jaa too raakhahi raakh laihi saabat hovai raas. ||1||
O’ God, when You protect and save the mind from these evil impulses then one’s capital of divine virtues remains intact. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਇਸ ਮਨ ਦੀ) ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ,ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੇਰੈ ॥
aisaa naam ratan niDh mayrai.
O’ God, bless me with such a treasure which is full of Your precious Name,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਐਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਬਖਸ਼ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਨਾਲ ਪਰੀਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਵੇ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਲਗਉ ਪਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmat deh laga-o pag tayrai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and bless me with the Guru’s teachings, so that I may always remain focused on Your Name. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਬਖਸ਼ ਤਾਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨੀ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਾਂ । ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਭੋਗੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
man jogee man bhogee-aa man moorakh gaavaar.
This mind of ours is foolish and spiritually ignorant, sometimes it is detached from the love for Maya and at other times, it indulges in worldly pleasures.
ਮਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ ਗੰਵਾਰ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਰਕਤ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰੁੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
man daataa man mangtaa man sir gur kartaar.
Sometimes the mind becomes the benefactor and sometimes the beggar, but when the Divine-Guru becomes his savior,
ਕਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਨੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਭਿਖਾਰੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਖਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਰਤਾਰ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
panch maar sukh paa-i-aa aisaa barahm veechaar. ||2||
then it attains such divine reflection that it enjoys inner peace by controlling the five evil impulses. ||2||
ਤਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਰੱਬੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਲੱਭ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
ghat ghat ayk vakhaanee-ai kaha-o na daykhi-aa jaa-ay.
O’ God, it is said that You reside in each and every heart, but You cannot be visualized simply by saying it.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਕਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ ਨਿਰੇ ਆਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਖੋਟੋ ਪੂਠੋ ਰਾਲੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
khoto pootho raalee-ai bin naavai pat jaa-ay.
Because of false pursuits, one is made to suffer by being hung upside down inthe womb; without remembering God’s Name one loses honor.
ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਜੀਵ (ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਵਿਚ) ਪੁੱਠਾ (ਲਟਕਾ ਕੇ) ਰੋਲੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ-ਆਬਰੋ ਭੀ ਚਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jaa too mayleh taa mil rahaaN jaaN tayree ho-ay rajaa-ay. ||3||
O’ God! I would remain united with Your Name only when You unite me and when it is Your will. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਦੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜਦੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਜਾਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹ ਪੂਛੀਐ ਸਚ ਘਰੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਤਾਇ ॥
jaat janam nah poochhee-ai sach ghar layho bataa-ay.
We shouldn’t ask anyone about his social class and his ancestry, if we must, then we should find out that in which heart God has manifested.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੁੱਛਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਕੇਹੜੀ ਹੈ ਕਿਸ ਕੁਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਹੋਇਆ।(ਪੁੱਛਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ) ਪੁੱਛੋ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਕਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ-ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
saa jaat saa pat hai jayhay karam kamaa-ay.
Because one’s social class and honor is determined by the deeds one does.
ਜਾਤਿ ਪਾਤਿ ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਉਹੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਜੀਵ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
janam maran dukh kaatee-ai naanak chhootas naa-ay. ||4||10||
O’ Nanak, freedom from the vices and the suffering of the cycles of birth and death is attained only by lovingly remembering God’s Name. ||4||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਪੰਜ ਚੋਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦੇ ਗੇੜ) ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੦

Raag Prabhati, First Guru:
ਜਾਗਤੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮੂਠੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥
jaagat bigsai mootho anDhaa.
Even though awake, a spiritually ignorant person is being robbed of his virtues but he still feels delighted.
ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜੀਵ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਵੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਰਾਸਿ ਪੂੰਜੀ ਵਲੋ ਲੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਖੁਸ਼ ਹੈ l
ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਧੰਧਾ ॥
gal faahee sir maaray DhanDhaa.
Around his neck is the noose of Maya and the worldly entanglements keep hitting on his head.
ਇਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਪਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੰਜਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਚੋਟਾਂ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਸਾ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
aasaa aavai mansaa jaa-ay.
One comes into the world with many hopes, but departs with many unfulfilled desires.
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਨ ਦੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਫੁਰਨੇ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਉਰਝੀ ਤਾਣੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥੧॥
urjhee taanee kichh na basaa-ay. ||1||
The strings of his life are all tangled up and he is utterly helpless. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਣੀ ਉਲਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ ॥੧॥
ਜਾਗਸਿ ਜੀਵਣ ਜਾਗਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
jaagas jeevan jaaganhaaraa.
God, the life of the world, always remains awake and aware.
ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ-ਜਾਨ, ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਜਾਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਖਬਰਦਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sukh saagar amrit bhandaaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is the ocean of peace and the treasure of ambrosial nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਉਹ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਭੋਂਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
kahi-o na boojhai anDh na soojhai bhoNdee kaar kamaa-ee.
Misguided by the love for Maya, one doesn’t understand what is being taught, does not think to escape from spiritual deterioration and keeps doing evil deeds.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਜੀਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਆਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਚਾਣ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਗੱਲ ਸੁੱਝਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਿੱਤ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਕਰਮੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੨॥
aapay pareet paraym parmaysur karmee milai vadaa-ee. ||2||
The supreme God Himself blesses one with the love for His Name and only by His grace one attains the honor of remembering Him. ||2||
ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਦਿਨੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਘਟਾਈ ॥
in din aavai til til chheejai maa-i-aa moh ghataa-ee.
With the dawn of each day, one’s remaining life is diminishing bit by bit, but the love for Maya remains intact in his heart.
ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਇਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦਿਨ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਥੋੜੀ ਥੋੜੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਮਰ ਘਟਦੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ; ਪਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਉਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੋ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਬ ਲਗ ਦੂਜੀ ਰਾਈ ॥੩॥
bin gur boodo tha-ur na paavai jab lag doojee raa-ee. ||3||
Without the Guru’s teachings, one remains drowned in the love for Maya, as long there is even a bit of duality, he doesn’t find a place for inner peace. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਜੀਵ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਡੁੱਬਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਤਾ ਭਰ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਾਇਮ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਦੀ) ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦੀ ॥੩॥
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੀਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
ahinis jee-aa daykh samHaalai sukh dukh purab kamaa-ee.
Day and night, God watches over and takes care of His living beings and gives them inner peace or sorrow in accordance with their past deeds.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਬੜੇ ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਰਬਲੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਂ ਦੁਖ ਭੋਗਣ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮਹੀਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
karamheen sach bheekhi-aa maaNgai naanak milai vadaa-ee. ||4||11||
O’ Nanak, when the unfortunate being humbly asks for the charity of God’s Name, only then he receives honor in God’s presence. ||4||11||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਅਭਾਗਾ ਜੀਵ ਜਦੋ ਨਿਮਾਣਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਭਿੱਛਿਆ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

ਮਸਟਿ ਕਰਉ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਗਿ ਕਹੀਆ ॥
masat kara-o moorakh jag kahee-aa.
O’ God, if (without caring about the worldly rituals and focusing only on Your Name) I remain silent, then the world calls me a fool,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਦੁਨੀਆਵੀ ਰਸਮ-ਰਿਵਾਜ ਵਲੋਂ ਬੇ-ਪਰਵਾਹ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ,
ਅਧਿਕ ਬਕਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੀਆ ॥
aDhik baka-o tayree liv rahee-aa.
and if I speak too much (to explain to them their mistakes), then my focus on You gets broken.
ਪਰ ਜੇ ( ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਉਕਾਈਆਂ ਸਮਝਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਉ ਘਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੂਲ ਚੂਕ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥
bhool chook tayrai darbaar.
The real mistakes and faults are those which are going to be judged as such in Your presence.
ਅਸਲ ਉਕਾਈਆਂ ਉਹੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਉਕਾਈਆਂ ਮੰਨੀਆਂ ਜਾਣ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੧॥
naam binaa kaisay aachaar. ||1||
How can there be any good conduct without remembering Your Name? ||1||
ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਚਾਲ ਚਲਨ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ॥੧॥
ਐਸੇ ਝੂਠਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
aisay jhooth muthay sansaaraa.
O’ God, the worldly people are being robbed by false practices.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਰਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਹਿਮ ਵਿਚ ਫਸ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋ ਲੁਟੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ
ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਨਿੰਦੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nindak nindai mujhai pi-aaraa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The slanderer slanders those who meditate on Your Name, but such a devotee who meditates on God’s Name is dear to me. ||1||Pause||
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਿੰਦਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jis nindeh so-ee biDh jaanai.
O’ God, whom worldly people slander, he alone knows the righteous way of life.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਇਹ ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡੀ ਲੋਕ) ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜਾ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ) ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sabday dar neesaanai.
Through the Guru’s word, such a person receives honor in God’s presence.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ-ਮਾਣ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਰਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
kaaran naam antargat jaanai.
He enshrines in his heart the Name of God, the creator of the universe.
ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
jis no nadar karay so-ee biDh jaanai. ||2||
But that person alone understands the righteous way of life upon whom God bestows His gracious glance. ||2||
ਪਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਨੇਕ ਰਹੁ-ਰੀਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਮੈ ਮੈਲੌ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
mai mailou oojal sach so-ay.
One who is involved in the sense of possessiveness, his mind is filthy and polluted, and only the eternal God is immaculate.
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਮੈਂ-ਮੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਲੀਨ ਹੈ , ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹੀ ਸਾਫ਼ ਹੈ।
ਊਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ootam aakh na oochaa ho-ay.
By claiming oneself to be sublime, one doesn’t become exalted.
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਤਮ ਆਖ ਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਖੂਲਿੑ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
manmukh khooliH mahaa bikh khaa-ay.
The self-willed person openly indulges in the love for Maya, which is the deadliest poison and the cause for spiritual deterioration.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹਅਝੱਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਮਾਇਆ-ਮੋਹ ਦਾ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥
gurmukh ho-ay so raachai naa-ay. ||3||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, remains absorbed in God’s Name. ||3||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅੰਧੌ ਬੋਲੌ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥
anDhou bolou mugaDh gavaar.
One blinded in the love for Maya remains oblivious to God’s praises and is an uncivilized fool,
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਕੰਨ ਮੂੰਦ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਹੈ, ਗੰਵਾਰ ਹੈ,
