ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satnaam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of eternal existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death and self revealed. He is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਤਰਣਾ ਨਾਇ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਜ ॥
naa-ay tayrai tarnaa naa-ay pat pooj.
O’ God, it is only through Your Name that we swim across the world-ocean of vices, and only through Your Name that we obtain any respect and reverence.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਗਹਣਾ ਮਤਿ ਮਕਸੂਦੁ ॥
naa-o tayraa gahnaa mat maksood.
Your Name is the embellishing ornament of human life and the purpose of human intellect.
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ (ਇਨਸਾਨੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਗਾਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ, ਇਨਸਾਨੀ ਅਕਲ ਦਾ ਮਕਸਦ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਕਿ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੇ)।
ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੇ ਸਭ ਕੋਇ ॥
naa-ay tayrai naa-o mannay sabh ko-ay.
O’ God, everyone respects the one who lovingly remembers Your Name.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਕੋਈ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
vin naavai pat kabahu na ho-ay. ||1||
Without lovingly remembering Your Name, no one is ever respected. ||1||
ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਆਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੧॥
ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਾਜੁ ॥
avar si-aanap saglee paaj.
(Except remembering God), all other cleverness is just a show.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ (ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਿਰਾ) ਲੋਕ-ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਹੈ
ਜੈ ਬਖਸੇ ਤੈ ਪੂਰਾ ਕਾਜੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jai bakhsay tai pooraa kaaj. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Upon whom God blesses with the gift of His Name, his purpose of human life is accomplished. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਨਾਉ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
naa-o tayraa taan naa-o deebaan.
O’ God, Your Name is the real strength and Your Name is the true justice.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਅਸਲ) ਤਾਕਤ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ (ਅਸਲ) ਹਕੂਮਤ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਲਸਕਰੁ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥
naa-o tayraa laskar naa-o sultaan.
Your Name is the army to fight against the vices and one who has Your Name feels like a king.
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਫ਼ੌਜਾਂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਦਾਰੀ) ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਾਣੁ ਮਹਤ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naa-ay tayrai maan mahat parvaan.
Through Your Name, one obtains honor, importance, and recognition.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਆਦਰ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੰਨਿਆ-ਪਰਮੰਨਿਆ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
tayree nadree karam pavai neesaan. ||2||
It is through your gracious glance and mercy that one gets the insignia to be in Your presence. ||2||
ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ-ਰਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ) ਇਹ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਨਾਇ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
naa-ay tayrai sahj naa-ay saalaah.
O’ God, it is through Your Name that one obtains a state of peace and poise, and it is through Your Name that one sings Your praises.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਆਦਤ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
naa-o tayraa amrit bikh uth jaa-ay.
Your Name is the ambrosial nectar, by drinking which one’s dirt of vices, the poison for spiritual life, is washed off.
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜਲ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਧੁਪ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥
naa-ay tayrai sabh sukh vaseh man aa-ay.
Inner peace and all comforts come to stay in the mind by remembering Your Name with loving devotion.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
bin naavai baaDhee jam pur jaa-ay. ||3||
Bereft of Naam, people bound in the bonds of vices and love for Maya go to the city of death (face the demon of death and suffer). ||3||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਦੁਨੀਆ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਗਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਬੱਝੀ ਹੋਈ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਨਾਰੀ ਬੇਰੀ ਘਰ ਦਰ ਦੇਸ ॥ ਮਨ ਕੀਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕੀਚਹਿ ਵੇਸ ॥
naaree bayree ghar dar days. man kee-aa khusee-aa keecheh vays.
For the pleasure of their mind, people wear fine dresses, love their spouse, houses, land and possessions, all these are like shackles for righteous life.
ਮਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ (ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ) ਘਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਿਲਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਲਕੀ-ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ (ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੇੜੀਆਂ (ਪਈਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ) ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਸਫ਼ਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੀਆਂ)।
ਜਾਂ ਸਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥
jaaN saday taaN dhil na paa-ay.
But when the call of death comes, then it cannot be delayed.
ਜਦੋਂ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਭੇਜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਸੱਦੇ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ) ਢਿੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜੋ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak koorh koorho ho-ay jaa-ay. ||4||1||
O Nanak, in the end, the entire worldly expanse, turns out to be false. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਝੂਠੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੀ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੧॥

ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਲੋਇ ॥
tayraa naam ratan karam chaanan surat tithai lo-ay.
O’ God, only that intellect, which has the support of Your jewel-like Name and the light of Your grace, is divinely enlightened.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖੀ) ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ (ਜੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ, ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਚਾਨਣ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ (ਤੇਰੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਅੰਧੀ ਵਾਪਰੈ ਸਗਲ ਲੀਜੈ ਖੋਇ ॥੧॥
anDhayr anDhee vaaprai sagal leejai kho-ay. ||1||
The darkness of spiritual ignorance prevails in the rest of the world which is blinded by the love for Maya, and loses the entire capital of life-breaths. ||1||
(ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਉਤੇ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਇਸ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸਾਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਗਵਾ ਲਈਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
ih sansaar sagal bikaar.
(O’ God), this entire world is involved in vices.
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ) ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਕਾਰ (ਸਹੇੜ ਰਿਹਾ) ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਰੂ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayraa naam daaroo avar naasat karanhaar apaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ the infinite Creator-God! Your Name alone is the cure for these vices and there is no other remedy. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ! ਕੇਵਲ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਕੁਛ ਭੀ ਨਾਂ, ਸਾਰੇ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਵਾਈ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪਾਤਾਲ ਪੁਰੀਆ ਏਕ ਭਾਰ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਲਾਖ ਕਰੋੜਿ ॥
paataal puree-aa ayk bhaar hoveh laakh karorh.
If the materials of nether regions and the worlds are bundled together, millions of such bundles can not equate the worth of God’s Name.
ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਤੇ ਪੁਰੀਆਂ (ਬੱਝ ਕੇ) ਇਕ ਪੰਡ ਬਣ ਜਾਣ, ਤੇ ਜੇ ਇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀਆਂ ਹੋਰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕ੍ਰੋੜਾਂ ਪੰਡਾਂ ਭੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਾਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ)।
ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਤਾ ਪਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰੈ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਹੋਰਿ ॥੨॥
tayray laal keemat taa pavai jaaN sirai hoveh hor. ||2||
O’ my beloved God!, Your Name’s worth could only be estimated if something else like Your Name could be placed on the other side of the scale. ||2||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਤੋਲਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤਕੜੀ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਛਾਬੇ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੋਵੇ ॥੨॥
