ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
ahinis pareet sabad saachai har sar vaasaa paavni-aa. ||5||
Day and night, through the Guru’s word, he develops love for God and keep dwelling in the divine pool of Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਦਾ ਬਗੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਈ ॥
manmukh sadaa bag mailaa ha-umai mal laa-ee.
The self-willed person is always filthy like a crane, smeared with the filth of ego.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਬਗਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੈ l
ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਪਰੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
isnaan karai par mail na jaa-ee.
He may bathe at holy places, but filth of ego does not go away.
ਉਹ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਚੁਕਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
jeevat marai gur sabad beechaarai ha-umai mail chukaavani-aa. ||6||
One who dies while yet alive (who gives up the sense of ego while still doing his worldly duties), and reflects on the Guru’s word, is rid off this filth of ego.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਮਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
ratan padaarath ghar tay paa-i-aa. poorai satgur sabad sunaa-i-aa.
He, to whom the perfect Guru has recited the holy word, has obtained the jewel like precious wealth of Naam within his heart.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਅਭੁੱਲ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।ਉਸ ਨੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਕੀਮਤੀ ਰਤਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਲੱਭ ਲਿਆ l
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
gur parsaad miti-aa anDhi-aaraa ghat chaanan aap pachhaanni-aa. ||7||
By Guru’s Grace, the darkness of spiritual ignorance is dispelled; he has come recognize the Divine Light within his own heart.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਅਗਿਆਨਤਾ ਦਾ ਹਨੇਰਾ ਮਿਟ ਗਿਆ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਚਾਨਣ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ l
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਤੈ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ॥
aap upaa-ay tai aapay vaykhai.
God Himself creates, and He Himself takes care of the creation.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਖੈ ॥
satgur sayvai so jan laykhai.
The one who follows the true Guru’s teachings is approved in God’s court.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ) ਕਬੂਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੩੧॥੩੨॥
naanak naam vasai ghat antar gur kirpaa tay paavni-aa. ||8||31||32||
O’ Nanak, the Naam dwells deep within the heart; by Guru’s Grace, it is realized.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l

Maajh Raag by the Third Guru:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
maa-i-aa moh jagat sabaa-i-aa.
The entire world is engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਆਪ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ l
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
tarai gun deeseh mohay maa-i-aa.
Everybody seems to be under the influence of the three traits of Maya.
ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਹਨ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
gur parsaadee ko virlaa boojhai cha-uthai pad liv laavani-aa. ||1||
By Guru’s grace, only a rare one recognize this truth. Subduing these impulses, he attunes his mind to the fourth state of spiritual exaltation called Turya.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਲੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree maa-i-aa moh sabad jalaavani-aa.
I dedicate myself to those, who burn their attachment to maya, by following the Guru’s word.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maa-i-aa moh jalaa-ay so har si-o chit laa-ay har dar mahlee sobhaa paavni-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He who burns away his attachment to Maya and fixes his mind on God’s lotus feet (remembers God with love and devotion), receives honor in God’s court.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਿਤ ਜੋੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
dayvee dayvaa mool hai maa-i-aa.
The reason for the creation of gods and goddesses is Maya.
ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਹੀ (ਭਾਵ, ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਾਮਨਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ) ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਰਚੇ ਜਾਣ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ।
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
simrit saasat jinn upaa-i-aa.
The Smritis and the Shastras (scriptures) were also composed because of Maya.
ਇਸ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ l
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
kaam kroDh pasri-aa sansaaray aa-ay jaa-ay dukh paavni-aa. ||2||
Lust and anger are pervading the world and people continue to suffer in the cycles of birth and death.
ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਤੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਦਾ ਜਜ਼ਬਾ ਪਸਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਪਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ l
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
tis vich gi-aan ratan ik paa-i-aa.
God has also placed the jewel of divine wisdom in this world.
ਇਸ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਇਕ ਰਤਨ ਭੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਦਾ ਰਤਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
gur parsaadee man vasaa-i-aa.
By the Guru’s grace, it is enshrined within the mind.
ਇਹ ਰਤਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jat sat sanjam sach kamaavai gur poorai naam Dhi-aavani-aa. ||3||
He who meditates on God’s Name, through the perfect Guru’s teachings, earns the merits of celibacy, truthful living, and self-discipline.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਤ ਕਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਤ ਕਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਕਮਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ l
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
pay-ee-arhai Dhan bharam bhulaanee.
In this world, the soul-bride who has been deluded by doubt.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ॥
doojai laagee fir pachhotaanee.
Attached to duality, she later comes to regret it.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਪਛੁਤਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਵਾਏ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
halat palat dovai gavaa-ay supnai sukh na paavni-aa. ||4||
She forfeits both this world and the next, and even in her dreams, she does not find peace.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਸੀਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ l
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
pay-ee-arhai Dhan kant samaalay.
The soul-bride who remembers her Husband-God in this world,
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
gur parsaadee vaykhai naalay.
by Guru’s grace, sees Him close at hand.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਗ-ਸੰਗ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਵੇਖਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
pir kai sahj rahai rang raatee sabad singaar banaavani-aa. ||5||
Embellishing herself with Husband-God’s love through the Guru’s word, she intuitively remains imbued with the love of her beloved.
ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਿੰਗਾਰ ਬਣਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ l ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
safal janam jinaa satgur paa-i-aa.
Successful is the human-birth of those who meet with the true Guru.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਵਡ-ਭਾਗੀ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ-ਜਨਮ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
doojaa bhaa-o gur sabad jalaa-i-aa.
Through the Guru’s word, they burn their love of duality.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਸਾੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
ayko rav rahi-aa ghat antar mil satsangat har gun gaavani-aa. ||6||
Joining the holy congregation, they sing God’s Praises who is pervading deep within their heart.
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਇਕ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਮਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥
satgur na sayvay so kaahay aa-i-aa.
Those who do not follow the teachings of the True Guru, why did they even come into this world?
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਪਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ, ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਹਾ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਹਾ ਨਾਹ ਆਇਆ।
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
Dharig jeevan birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa.
Accursed is his life, and uselessly wasted is this human life.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ ਜੋਗ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਗਵਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
manmukh naam chit na aavai bin naavai baho dukh paavni-aa. ||7||
The self-willed person does not remember Naam. Without the Naam, he suffers in terrible pain.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੇ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਚ (ਕਦੇ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੱਸਦਾ, ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin sisat saajee so-ee jaanai.
The One who created the Universe, He alone knows all about it.
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਖੇਡ ਨੂੰ) ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aapay maylai sabad pachhaanai.
He unites those with Himself, who realize Him through the Guru’s word.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੋੜਾਂ) ਪਛਾਣ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੩੨॥੩੩॥
nanak naam mili-aa tin jan ka-o jin Dhur mastak laykh likhaavani-aa. ||8||1||32||33||
O’ Nanak, only those receive the gift of Naam who are so predestined.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਉੱਤੋਂ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦਾ ਲੇਖ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥

Maajh Raag, by the fourth Guru:
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
aad purakh aprampar aapay.
The primal Being is farther than the farthest; everywhere He is all by Himself.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਹੈ, ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭ ਸਕਦਾ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ l
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥
aapay thaapay thaap uthaapay.
He Himself creates and He Himself destroys.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ) ਰਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਚ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
sabh meh vartai ayko so-ee gurmukh sobhaa paavni-aa. ||1||
The same One pervades in all beings, but the one who follows the Guru’s teachings attains glory at His door.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਉਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ) ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥
ha-o vaaree jee-o vaaree nirankaaree naam Dhi-aavani-aa.
I dedicate myself to those who meditate on the Name of the formless God with love and devotion.
ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਕੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਹਾਂ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਨਿਰਾਕਾਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
