ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
likhi-aa palai paa-ay so sach jaanee-ai.
Therefore, we should realize that eternal God, from whom alone we receive the preordained gift of remembering God.
ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਬਣਾਈਏ, ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ-ਰੂਪ) ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ (ਲੇਖ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਗਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukmee ho-ay nibayrh ga-i-aa jaanee-ai.
One’s fate is decided by God’s will and one comes to know about it by reaching His presence.
ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਬੰਦੇ ਦੀ ਕਿਸਮਤ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਓਥੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਉਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ॥
bha-ojal taaranhaar sabad pachhaanee-ai.
Therefore, through the Guru’s word, we should develop strong rapport with God who alone is capable to ferry us across the world-ocean of vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾਣ ਦੇ ਸਮਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਚੋਰ ਜਾਰ ਜੂਆਰ ਪੀੜੇ ਘਾਣੀਐ ॥
chor jaar joo-aar peerhay ghaanee-ai.
The vicious people such as thieves, adulterers and gamblers, suffer such severe punishment, as if they were being crushed in an oil press;
ਚੋਰਾਂ ਵਿਭਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਜੂਏ-ਬਾਜ਼ (ਆਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਇਉਂ ਹਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਕੋਲ੍ਹੂ ਵਿਚ ਪੀੜੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ;
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੜ੍ਹ੍ਹਵਾਣੀਐ ॥
nindak laa-itbaar milay harhHvaanee-ai.
The slanderers and backbiters keep doing these evils as if they are handcuffed in doing defamation and backbiting.
ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੁਗ਼ਲਖ਼ੋਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਨੋ, ਨਿੰਦਾ ਤੇ ਚੁਗ਼ਲੀ ਦੀ) ਹਥਕੜੀ ਵੱਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ਸੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੧॥
gurmukh sach samaa-ay so dargeh jaanee-ai. ||21||
But the Guru’s followers who remain absorbed in God’s Name, are recognized with honor in God’s presence. ||21||
ਪਰ ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨੧॥

Shalok,Second Guru:
ਨਾਉ ਫਕੀਰੈ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ਮੂਰਖ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
naa-o fakeerai paatisaahu moorakh pandit naa-o.
A beggar is named a king, a foolish person is named a religious scholar,
ਕੰਗਾਲ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ (ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪੰਡਿਤ (ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਅੰਧੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਏਵੈ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਆਉ ॥
anDhay kaa naa-o paarkhoo ayvai karay gu-aa-o.
and a blind man is called an appraiser; this is how people talk.
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਰਖੂ (ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)-(ਬੱਸ! ਜਗਤ) ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਲਤਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਚਉਧਰੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਪੂਰੇ ਥਾਉ ॥
ilat kaa naa-o cha-uDhree koorhee pooray thaa-o.
A troublemaker is called chief and a false woman occupies the position of leadership everywhere.
ਸ਼ਰਾਰਤਿ (ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਚੌਧਰੀ (ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਤੇ ਝੂਠੀ ਜ਼ਨਾਨੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਥਾਂ ਮੱਲਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਆਉ ॥੧॥
naanak gurmukh jaanee-ai kal kaa ayhu ni-aa-o. ||1||
O’ Nanak, by following the Guru’s teachings, one comes to understand that this is the kind of justice in the present era of kalyug. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਦਾ ਨਿਆਂ ॥੧॥

First Guru:
ਹਰਣਾਂ ਬਾਜਾਂ ਤੈ ਸਿਕਦਾਰਾਂ ਏਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਪੜਿ੍ਹ੍ਹਆ ਨਾਉ ॥
harnaaN baajaaN tai sikdaaraaN aynHaa parhH-aa naa-o.
The government officers, who act like the trained deer and falcons of hunters, are called the learned ones,
ਗਿਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਰਨ, ਬਾਜ਼ ਤੇ ਅਹਲਕਾਰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਖੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਫਾਂਧੀ ਲਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਫਹਾਇਨਿ ਅਗੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥
faaNDhee lagee jaat fahaa-in agai naahee thaa-o.
They help in oppressing the people of their own faith, as if trapping their own species; such learned ones do not get approved in God’s presence.
ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਫਾਹੀ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ-ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਐਸੇ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ।
ਸੋ ਪੜਿਆ ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬੀਨਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਕਮਾਣਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
so parhi-aa so pandit beenaa jinHee kamaanaa naa-o.
One who has earned the wealth of Naam, he alone is learned, pandit and wise.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ‘ਨਾਮ’ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਹੈ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ,
ਪਹਿਲੋ ਦੇ ਜੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਤਾ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਛਾਂਉ ॥
pahilo day jarh andar jammai taa upar hovai chhaaN-o.
At first, a tree takes root underground only then it grows big enough to provide shade, likewise one should enshrine Naam in his heart to become learned.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਰੁੱਖ ਦੀ) ਜੜ੍ਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ (ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਜੰਮਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ (ਰੁੱਖ ਉੱਗ ਕੇ) ਬਾਹਰ ਛਾਂ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਾਮ ਬੀਜਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਬਣ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ|
ਰਾਜੇ ਸੀਹ ਮੁਕਦਮ ਕੁਤੇ ॥
raajay seeh mukdam kutay.
The kings are behaving like tigers and their officials are behaving like dogs,
ਰਾਜੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸ਼ੇਰ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ, ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ) ਅਹਲਕਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਕੁੱਤੇ ਹਨ,
ਜਾਇ ਜਗਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਬੈਠੇ ਸੁਤੇ ॥
jaa-ay jagaa-iniH baithay sutay.
who go and harass common people who do not bother anyone.
ਬੈਠੇ-ਸੁੱਤੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਭਾਵ, ਵੇਲੇ ਕੁਵੇਲੇ) ਜਾ ਜਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਤੰਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
ਚਾਕਰ ਨਹਦਾ ਪਾਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਘਾਉ ॥
chaakar nahdaa paa-iniH ghaa-o.
These government servants victimize people as if those Government people were tigers inflicting wounds on innocent people with their claws,
ਇਹ ਅਹਲਕਾਰ (ਮਾਨੋ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਨਹੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਂ ਹਨ, ਜੋ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਘਾਤ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਰਤੁ ਪਿਤੁ ਕੁਤਿਹੋ ਚਟਿ ਜਾਹੁ ॥
rat pit kutiho chat jaahu.
these kings usurp the belongings of people, as if they suck the blood and eat the flesh of people through their officials who act as hunter dogs.
ਰਾਜੇ-ਸ਼ੀਂਹ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਮੁਕੱਦਮ) ਕੁੱਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਲਹੂ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਥੈ ਜੀਆਂ ਹੋਸੀ ਸਾਰ ॥
jithai jee-aaN hosee saar.
But in God’s presence where people are judged for their deeds,
ਪਰ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ (ਕਰਣੀ ਦੀ) ਪਰਖ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਨਕੀ ਵਢੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰ ॥੨॥
nakeeN vadheeN laa-itbaar. ||2||
such educated persons are considered un-trustworthy and disgraced as if their noses were chopped off. ||2||
ਓਥੇ ਅਜੇਹੇ (ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦੇ) ਬੇ-ਇਤਬਾਰੇ ਨੱਕ-ਵੱਢੇ (ਸਮਝੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਮੇਦਨੀ ਆਪੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਸਾਰ ॥
aap upaa-ay maydnee aapay kardaa saar.
God, who creates the universe, also takes care of it,
(ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਆਪ ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਕਟੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
bhai bin bharam na katee-ai naam na lagai pi-aar.
Without having His revered fear, neither our doubt is dispelled nor love wells up for His Name.
(ਉਸ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਭਰਮ ਕੱਟਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭਉ ਊਪਜੈ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
satgur tay bha-o oopjai paa-ee-ai mokh du-aar.
The revered fear of God springs up in our mind by following the Guru’s teachings, and we find the way to liberation from vices,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਣ ਪਿਆਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
bhai tay sahj paa-ee-ai mil jotee jot apaar.
because through His revered fear, we achieve spiritual stability when our light (soul) merges with the Divine light of the infinite God.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਡਰ ਰੱਖਿਆਂ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਿਆਂ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਭੈਜਲੁ ਲੰਘੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
bhai tay bhaijal langhee-ai gurmatee veechaar.
Because of this revered fear of God, we reflect on the Guru’s teachings and cross over the dreadful worldly ocean of vices,
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਵੀਚਾਰ ਬਣਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੇ, ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰੁ ॥
bhai tay nirbha-o paa-ee-ai jis daa ant na paaraavaar.
Through this revered fear we realize the fearless God who has no end or limit.
ਇਸ ਡਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹੀ ਡਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਲਾ ਉਰਲਾ ਬੰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਦਾ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਤੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
manmukh bhai kee saar na jaannee tarisnaa jaltay karahi pukaar.
The self-willed people do not know the worth of God’s revered fear; therefore, they keep wailing while burning in the fire of worldly desires.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ (ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ (ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (-ਅੱਗ) ਵਿਚ ਸੜਦੇ ਵਿਲਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰ ॥੨੨॥
naanak naavai hee tay sukh paa-i-aa gurmatee ur Dhaar. ||22||
O’ Nanak, I have received inner peace by enshrining the Guru’s teaching in the heart and lovingly remembering God’s Name. ||22||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾਉਣ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ,ਮੈਂ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨੨॥

Shalok,First Guru:
ਰੂਪੈ ਕਾਮੈ ਦੋਸਤੀ ਭੁਖੈ ਸਾਦੈ ਗੰਢੁ ॥
roopai kaamai dostee bhukhai saadai gandh.
There is friendship between beauty and lust and alliance between hunger and dainty dishes,
ਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਕਾਮ (-ਵਾਸਨਾ) ਨਾਲ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਹੈ, ਭੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਹੈ।
ਲਬੈ ਮਾਲੈ ਘੁਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਚਲਿ ਊਂਘੈ ਸਉੜਿ ਪਲੰਘੁ ॥
labai maalai ghul mil michal ooNghai sa-urh palangh.
Wealth and greed are very close to each other; even a narrow space feels like a cozy bed to the one who is sleepy.
ਲੱਬ ਦੀ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਿਲਵੀਂ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕਤਾ ਹੈ (ਨੀਂਦਰ ਨਾਲ) ਊਂਘ ਰਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਉੜੀ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਲੰਘ ਹੈ।
ਭੰਉਕੈ ਕੋਪੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਫਕੜੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਅੰਧੁ ॥
bhaNukai kop khu-aar ho-ay fakarh pitay anDh.
Anger makes a person shout; being blinded by rage, one utters foolish words.
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਬਹੁਤ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਵਿਚ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ (ਹੋਇਆ ਬੰਦਾ) ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਬਦ-ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚੁਪੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੧॥
chupai changa naankaa vin naavai muhi ganDh. ||1||
O’ Nanak, forgetting God’s Name, all that one utters is indecent, therefore it is better to remain silent.||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ (ਬਦ-ਕਲਾਮੀ ਦੀ) ਬੋ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਬੋਲਣ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ) ਚੁੱਪ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

ਰਾਜੁ ਮਾਲੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਪੰਜੇ ਠਗ ॥
raaj maal roop jaat joban panjay thag.
The Royal power, worldly possessions, beauty, pride of caste (social status) and youth, all these five things are great deceivers,
ਰਾਜ, ਧਨ, ਸੁੰਦਰਤਾ, (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ, ਤੇ ਜੁਆਨੀ-ਇਹ ਪੰਜੇ ਹੀ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਠੱਗ ਹਨ,
ਏਨੀ ਠਗੀਂ ਜਗੁ ਠਗਿਆ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਰਖੀ ਲਜ ॥
aynee thageeN jag thagi-aa kinai na rakhee laj.
These cheats have cheated the entire world and no one has saved his honor from them.
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਠੱਗਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਠੱਗ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾਈ।
ਏਨਾ ਠਗਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ਠਗ ਸੇ ਜਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਰੀ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
aynaa thagniH thag say je gur kee pairee paahi.
Those who seek the refuge of the Guru, outsmart these cheats.
ਇਹਨਾਂ (ਠੱਗਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਠੱਗ (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਆਣੇ ਬੰਦੇ) ਦਾਉ ਲਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ) ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਮਾ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਠੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥
naanak karmaa baahray hor kaytay muthay jaahi. ||2||
O’ Nanak, but there are many other unfortunate people who get defrauded by falling victims to these cheats. ||2||
(ਪਰ) ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੋਰ ਬੜੇ ਭਾਗ-ਹੀਣ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਢਹੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਲੁੱਟੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥

ਪੜਿਆ ਲੇਖੇਦਾਰੁ ਲੇਖਾ ਮੰਗੀਐ ॥
parhi-aa laykhaydaar laykhaa mangee-ai.
Even a learned debtor (evil doer) is also called to account for his deeds in God’s presence,
ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਲਿਖੇ ਕਰਜਈ ਕੋਲੋ ਵੀ ਪ੍ਰਲੋਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸਾਬ-ਕਿਤਾਬ ਮੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰੁ ਅਉਖਾ ਤੰਗੀਐ ॥
vin naavai koorhi-aar a-ukhaa tangee-ai.
because without remembering Naam, even an educated one is also considered false and thereby suffers hardship and misery.
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ) ਕੂੜ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹੈ; ਔਖਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਔਖਿਆਈ ਹੀ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਉਘਟ ਰੁਧੇ ਰਾਹ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਰੋਕੀਆਂ ॥
a-ughat ruDhay raah galee-aaN rokee-aaN.
The path of his life’s journey is blocked by the yearning for worldly desires, and it is very difficult to tread through it.
ਉਸ ਦੇ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ) ਗਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਰਸਤੇ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ) ਰੁਕੇ ਪਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਦੀ ਲੰਘਣਾ) ਔਖਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ॥
sachaa vayparvaahu sabad santokhee-aaN.
The contented person realizes the eternal carefree God by reflecting on the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੇ-ਮੁਥਾਜ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗਹਿਰ ਗਭੀਰ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਹਾਥ ਨ ਲਭਈ ॥
gahir gabheer athaahu haath na labh-ee.
God is like a very deep, profound, and unfathomable ocean, whose depth cannot be measured (by education and shrewdness).
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਬੜਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ (ਸਮੁੰਦਰ) ਹੈ, (ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਉਸ ਦੀ ਥਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ।
ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਹੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਛੁਟਸੀ ॥
muhay muhi chotaa khaahu vin gur ko-ay na chhutsee.
Being egotistically proud of education, one always suffers due to the yearning for worldly desires; no one escapes from it without following the Guru’s teachings.
ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀਆਂ) ਚੋਟਾਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ; ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਤੋਂ) ਬੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਹੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ॥
pat saytee ghar jaahu naam vakhaanee-ai.
We should always remember God’s Name with adoration, so that we may reach God’s presence with honor.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੀਏ) ਤਾਂ ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਅੱਪੜਿਏ।
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਾਹ ਗਿਰਾਹ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥੨੩॥
hukmee saah giraah dayNdaa jaanee-ai. ||23||
We should definitely know that God gives us life breaths and sustenance as per His command.||23||
ਇਹ ਗਲ ਨਿਸਚੇ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਚਾਇਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਨ ਤੇ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੩॥
