Raag Malaar, Chau-Padas (four stanzas), First Guru, First Beat:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar sat naam kartaa purakh nirbha-o nirvair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhaN gur parsaad.
There is only one God whose Name is ‘of Eternal Existence’. He is the creator of the universe, all-pervading, without fear, without enmity, independent of time, beyond the cycle of birth and death, self revealed and is realized by the Guru’s grace.
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ‘ਹੋਂਦ ਵਾਲਾ’ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਰਚਨਹਾਰ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ, ਭੈ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਵੈਰ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਕਾਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਾਸ-ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ), ਜੋ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਸਉਣਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਹੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
khaanaa peenaa hasnaa sa-unaa visar ga-i-aa hai marnaa.
By remaining engrossed in worldly pleasure like eating, drinking, laughing and sleeping, one has completely forgotten about death.
ਨਿਰਾ ਖਾਣ ਪੀਣ ਹੱਸਣ ਤੇ ਸੌਣ ਦੇ ਆਹਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਮੌਤ ਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
khasam visaar khu-aaree keenee Dharig jeevan nahee rahnaa. ||1||
No one lives in this world forever; forsaking the Master-God, one wanders vainly and accursed becomes his life. ||1||
ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਉਹ ਉਹ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਜੀਊਣਾ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਦਾ ਇਥੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਟਿਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣਾ ॥੧॥
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ॥
paraanee ayko naam Dhi-aavahu.
O mortal, lovingly remember God’s Name,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ,
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
apnee pat saytee ghar jaavhu. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and reach your Divine home with honor. ||1||Pause||
ਅਤੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤੁਝੁ ਕਿਆ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮਾਂਗਹਿ ਲੇਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਹੀ ॥
tuDhno sayveh tujh ki-aa dayveh maaNgeh layveh raheh nahee.
O’ God, those who remember You, what can they give You; rather they beg and receive gifts from You and they cannot resist asking You for things.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ,ਉਹ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਗੋ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੋਲੋ ਮੰਗਕੇ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਗਣ ਤੋਂ ਰੁਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਆ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੨॥
too daataa jee-aa sabhnaa kaa jee-aa andar jee-o tuhee. ||2||
O’ God! You are the benefactor to all creatures and You are the life within all living beings. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜਿੰਦ ਭੀ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਸੂਚੇ ਹੋਹੀ ॥
gurmukh Dhi-aavahi se amrit paavahi say-ee soochay hohee.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings and lovingly remember God, receive the ambrosial nectar of Naam and become immaculate.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹੀ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮੈਲੇ ਹਛੇ ਹੋਹੀ ॥੩॥
ahinis naam japahu ray paraanee mailay hachhay hohee. ||3||
O’ mortals, always remember God’s Name with adoration and by doing so, even the sinners become virtuous. ||3||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ। (ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ) ਭੈੜੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਭੀ ਚੰਗੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਜੇਹੀ ਰੁਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
jayhee rut kaa-i-aa sukh tayhaa tayho jayhee dayhee.
As is the season, the body is in comfort or discomfort accordingly and ultimately the body adopts to that season.
ਜੇਹੜੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਹੇਠ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਸੁਖ (ਜਾਂ ਦੁਖ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਢਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੁਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਕੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak rut suhaavee saa-ee bin naavai rut kayhee. ||4||1||
O’ Nanak, that season alone is pleasant in which one remembers God’s Name and without Naam, no season is of any use for his inner peace. ||4||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਉਹੀ ਰੁੱਤ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ)। ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਦੀ ਬਦਲਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ) ਰੁੱਤ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੪॥੧॥

Raag Malaar, First Guru:
ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨਉ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
kara-o bin-o gur apnay pareetam har var aan milaavai.
I pray to my beloved Guru to unite me with my Husband-God
ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅੱਗੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ) ਪਤੀ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆ ਕੇ ਮਿਲਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਘਨ ਘੋਰ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਰਾ ਲਾਲ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
sun ghan ghor seetal man moraa laal ratee gun gaavai. ||1||
(Just as listening to thunder, a peacock starts dancing), similarly listening to the the Guru’s words my mind becomes calm, and my tongue imbued with God’s love sings His praises. ||1||
(ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵਰਖਾ ਰੁੱਤੇ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਰਜ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੋਰ ਪੈਲਾਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਰਜ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਠੰਢਾ-ਠਾਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਜੀਭ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਬਰਸੁ ਘਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ॥
baras ghanaa mayraa man bheenaa.
O’ my Guru, pour down the rain of divine words, so that my mind may get soaked in God’s love.
ਹੇ ਬੱਦਲ! ਵਰਖਾ ਕਰ (ਹੇ ਗੁਰੂ! ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਰਖਾ ਕਰ, ਤਾ ਕਿ) ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜ ਜਾਏ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੂੰਦ ਸੁਹਾਨੀ ਹੀਅਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
amrit boond suhaanee hee-arai gur mohee man har ras leenaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The Guru has captivated me, my mind remains immersed in the elixir of God’s Name; a drop of the ambrosial nectar of Naam pleases my heart. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਆਰ-ਵੱਸ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਠੰਢ ਪਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਸੁਖ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੀ ਵਰ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
sahj sukhee var kaaman pi-aaree jis gur bachnee man maani-aa.
One whose mind is appeased with the Guru’s word, this beloved of the Master God enjoys the inner peace in a state of spiritual poise.
ਜਿਸ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ) ਦਾ ਮਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਅਡੋਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਹਰਿ ਵਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਭਈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਸੁਖਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
har var naar bha-ee sohagan man tan paraym sukhaani-aa. ||2||
Accepting God as her Master, she becomes a fortunate human being and God’s love produces celestial peace in her mind and body. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਖਸਮ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਸੁਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਭਈ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਵਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ਹਰੀ ॥
avgan ti-aag bha-ee bairaagan asthir var sohaag haree.
Discarding her vices, she becomes detached from the love for worldly riches and power, and the eternal God becomes her Master forever.
ਉਹ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਔਗੁਣ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੈਰਾਗਣ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਉਹ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹਰੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸੋਹਾਗ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਖਸਮ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥੩॥
sog vijog tis kaday na vi-aapai har parabh apnee kirpaa karee. ||3||
No sorrow or separation from God ever afflicts her, because God has bestowed mercy upon her. ||3||
ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਕਦੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ ॥੩॥
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ॥
aavan jaan nahee man nihchal pooray gur kee ot gahee.
One who has sought the refuge of the perfect Guru, her mind becomes stable against the vices and her cycle of birth and death ends.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਪੱਲਾ ਫੜਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ , ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਹੀ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak raam naam jap gurmukh Dhan sohagan sach sahee. ||4||2||
O’ Nanak, only that human being is the true embodiment of God who follows the Guru’s teachings and becomes fortunate by remembering God. ||4||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹੀ ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਠੀਕ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨॥

Raag Malaar, First Guru:
ਸਾਚੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
saachee surat naam nahee tariptai ha-umai karat gavaa-i-aa.
Those whose mind did not become spiritually stable and did not become appeased with God’s Name, have wasted their human life in egotism.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਅਡੋਲ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੁੜੀ, ਉਹਨਾ ਨੇ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਆਪਣਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਗਵਾ ਲਿਆ।
