ਭੂਲੇ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥
bhoolay sikh guroo samjhaa-ay.
The Guru imparts teachinngs to the deluded person and make him understand the righteous path of life,
ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਾਹ ਦੀ) ਸਮਝ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਉਝੜਿ ਜਾਦੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
ujharh jaaday maarag paa-ay.
and puts that one on the righteous path, who has gone astray.
ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨੂੰ (ਠੀਕ) ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਖਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
tis gur sayv sadaa din raatee dukh bhanjan sang sakhaataa hay. ||13||
O’ brother, follow the Guru’s teachings and always lovingly remember God who is the destroyer of sorrows and remains with you as a companion. ||13||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ਤੂੰ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
gur kee bhagat karahi ki-aa paraanee.
How can ordinary human beings realize the worth of the Guru’s teachings?
(ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਜੀਵ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੀ ਕੀਹ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ?
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿ ਮਹੇਸਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
barahmai in-dar mahays na jaanee.
Even gods like Brahma, Indira, and Shiva have not understood it.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਨੇ, ਇੰਦਰ ਨੇ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ (ਭੀ ਇਹ ਕਦਰ) ਨਾਹ ਸਮਝੀ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਲਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
satgur alakh kahhu ki-o lakhee-ai jis bakhsay tiseh pachhaataa hay. ||14||
Tell me, how could one comprehend the incomprehensible true Guru? That person alone understands the Guru, on whom God) bestows His grace. ||14||
ਦਸੋ ਅਲੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ॥
antar paraym paraapat darsan.
One within whom is the love for the Guru, beholds the blessed vision of God.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਦੀਦਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਸੁ ਪਰਸਨੁ ॥
gurbaanee si-o pareet so parsan.
One who is in love with the Guru’s word, gets to realize God.
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਣ ਗਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਛੁਹ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
ahinis nirmal jot sabaa-ee ghat deepak gurmukh jaataa hay. ||15||
By the Guru‘s grace, one within whose heart is lighted the lamp of divine wisdom, always experiences the Divine light in everyone. ||15||
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੀ ਹੀ ਲੋਕਾਈ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ (ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ) ਦੀਵਾ (ਜਗਦਾ) ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਭੋਜਨ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
bhojan gi-aan mahaa ras meethaa.
The divine wisdom is spiritual food which is extremely sweet and delicious.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਇਕ ਐਸੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸੁਆਦਲੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥
jin chaakhi-aa tin darsan deethaa.
Whoever has tasted it, has seen the blessed vision of God.
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦੀਦਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
darsan daykh milay bairaagee man mansaa maar samaataa hay. ||16||
Experiencing His blessed vision, they realize God and renounce the love for worldly desires; their mind always remains immersed in remembering Him. ||16||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਦਰਸਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਆਪਣੀਆਂ) ਕਾਮਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ (ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ) ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਪਰਧਾਨਾ ॥
satgur sayveh say parDhaanaa.
Those who follow the true Guru’s teachings are supreme and famous,
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਮੰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੇ ਹਨ,
ਤਿਨ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾ ॥
tin ghat ghat antar barahm pachhaanaa.
they recognize God within each and every heart.
ਉਹ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਿਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੧॥
naanak har jas har jan kee sangat deejai jin satgur har parabh jaataa hay. ||17||5||11||
O’ Nanak, say: O’ God, bless me with the divine word of Your praises and the company of those devotees who have realized that the true Guru is the embodiment of God. ||17||5||11||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ. ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਆਪਨੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਨੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਬਖਸ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ -ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ॥੧੭॥੫॥੧੧॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੇ ॥
saachay saahib sirjanhaaray.
O’ the eternal God! O’ the creator of the universe!
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮਾਲਕ! ਹੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਰਚਣਹਾਰ!
ਜਿਨਿ ਧਰ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਧਰੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
jin Dhar chakar Dharay veechaaray.
It is You who have created all the planets and have thoughtfully established them in the universe.
ਜਿਸ ਤੈਂ ਨੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਚੱਕਰ ਬਣਾਏ ਹਨ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੋਚ-ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਥਾਂ) ਟਿਕਾਏ ਹਨ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
aapay kartaa kar kar vaykhai saachaa vayparvaahaa hay. ||1||
After creating, the creator Himself looks after the creation; in spite of this huge expance, the eternal God is care-free. ||1||
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਰਚ ਰਚ ਕੇ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਇਤਨਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਭੀ) ਉਹ ਬੇ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਵੇਕੀ ਵੇਕੀ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
vaykee vaykee jant upaa-ay.
God has created the beings of many different kinds,
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਰੰਗਾ ਰੰਗ ਦੇ ਜੀਵ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਇ ਪੰਦੀ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
du-ay pandee du-ay raah chalaa-ay.
and has put them on two different paths, the spiritualism and the materialism
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਤਾ ਤੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਤਾ-ਇਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
gur pooray vin mukat na ho-ee sach naam jap laahaa hay. ||2||
Liberation from the parh of materialism is not received without the perfect Guru’s teachings; the spiritual gain lies in meditating on God’s Name. ||2||
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮੰਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਲੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ। ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟ ਸਕੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਪੜਹਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਰੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
parheh manmukh par biDh nahee jaanaa.
The self-willed persons although read holy books, do not learn the righteous way of living.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ (ਮਜ਼ਹਬੀ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ) ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿੱਖਦੇ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ॥
naam na boojheh bharam bhulaanaa.
They do not understand the worth of Naam and remain astray in the illusion of Maya, the worldly riches and power.
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ (ਕਦਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ, (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਿਚ (ਪੈ ਕੇ) ਕੁਰਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਲੈ ਕੈ ਵਢੀ ਦੇਨਿ ਉਗਾਹੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
lai kai vadhee dayn ugaahee durmat kaa gal faahaa hay. ||3||
They take bribes, and give false testimony; because of evil intellect, the noose of death is always around their neck. ||3||
ਰਿਸ਼ਵਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਝੂਠੀਆਂ) ਗਵਾਹੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਭੈੜੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਪਈ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
simrit saastar parheh puraanaa.
The pundits read Simrities, Shastras, and Puranaas (the Hindu holy books).
(ਪੰਡਿਤ ਲੋਕ ਭੀ) ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
vaad vakaaneh tat na jaanaa.
they argue and debate, but do not realize the essence of reality (God).
(ਪਰ) ਚਰਚਾ (ਹੀ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਝਦੇ।
ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚ ਸੂਚੇ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
vin gur pooray tat na paa-ee-ai sach soochay sach raahaa hay. ||4||
God cannot be realized without following the perfect Guru’s teachings; those who always lovingly remember God, become immaculate and follow the righteous path in life. ||4||
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਲੱਭ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ (ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਉਹ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰਸਤਾ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਸਭ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ॥
sabh saalaahay sun sun aakhai.
(On the surface), the entire world sings praises of God and after hearing from others, they also talk about His virtues.
(ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਤਾਂ) ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਆਖਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਾਖੈ ॥
aapay daanaa sach paraakhai.
But the omniscient God Himself judges the truth about each one’s sincerity.
ਪਰ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਹਰੇਕ ਦੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਨੂੰ) ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
jin ka-o nadar karay parabh apnee gurmukh sabad salaahaa hay. ||5||
Those on whom God bestows grace, sing His praises by following the Guru’s teachings. ||5||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਉੋਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ ਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।, ॥੫॥
ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਆਖੈ ਕੇਤੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
sun sun aakhai kaytee banee.
Myriad of people utter God’s praises, after repeatedly listening from others.
(ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਭੀ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਕਹੀਐ ਕੋ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
sun kahee-ai ko ant na jaanee.
People may keep on listening and uttering these praises but still nobody knows the limit of God’s virtues.
ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਥਨ ਕਰ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
jaa ka-o alakh lakhaa-ay aapay akath kathaa buDh taahaa hay. ||6||
Only the one, whom the indescribable God reveals Himself, obtains the wisdom to describe His indescribable praises and virtues. ||6||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪਾ ਵਿਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਥਾ-ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਜਨਮੇ ਕਉ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਧਾਏ ॥
janmay ka-o vaajeh vaaDhaa-ay.
Upon the birth of a child, the greetings of joy pour in.
(ਜਦੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਜੰਮਣ ਤੇ ਵਾਜੇ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਧਾਈਆਂ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ,
ਸੋਹਿਲੜੇ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਗਾਏ ॥
sohilrhay agi-aanee gaa-ay.
The spiritually ignorant people sing songs of joy.
ਗਿਆਨ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਲੋਕ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋ ਜਨਮੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥
jo janmai tis sarpar marnaa kirat pa-i-aa sir saahaa hay. ||7||
Whoever is born, is sure to die, the time of death is predetermined according to the past deeds. ||7||
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਰਨਾ ਭੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਹੈ। ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਮੁਹੂਰਤ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਏ ॥
sanjog vijog mayrai parabh kee-ay.
Union through birth and separation by death is a play created by my God.
(ਜੰਮ ਕੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਣਾ ਤੇ (ਮਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਤੋਂ) ਵਿਛੁੜਨਾ-ਇਹ ਖੇਡ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਦੁਖਾ ਸੁਖ ਦੀਏ ॥
sarisat upaa-ay dukhaa sukh dee-ay.
After creating the world, He Himself has given sorrows and joys to it.
ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੀ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
dukh sukh hee tay bha-ay niraalay gurmukh seel sanaahaa hay. ||8||
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings and adopt pious behaviour, remain unaffected by sorrow and pleasure. ||8||
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੰਜੋਅ ਪਹਿਨਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੮॥
ਨੀਕੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ॥
neekay saachay kay vaapaaree.
Exalted are those who are traders of God’s Name.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹਾਝਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
sach sa-udaa lai gur veechaaree.
They acquire the commodity of God’s Name by reflecting on the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਇਥੋਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਚਾ ਵਖਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
sachaa vakhar jis Dhan palai sabad sachai omaahaa hay. ||9||
One who has the everlasting commodity and wealth of Naam, enjoys a state of spiritual delight through the word of God’s praises. ||9||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਪੱਲੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੌਦਾ ਹੈ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਕਾਚੀ ਸਉਦੀ ਤੋਟਾ ਆਵੈ ॥
kaachee sa-udee totaa aavai.
One suffers spiritual losses by dealing only in the false trades of Maya.
ਨਿਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋਛੇ ਵਣਜ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਘਾਟਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਣਜੁ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh vanaj karay parabh bhaavai.
The Guru’s follower does only that trade which is pleasing to God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੰਦਾ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ) ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਰਾਸਿ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਫਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
poonjee saabat raas salaamat chookaa jam kaa faahaa hay. ||10||
His spiritual wealth and commodity remains intact and the noose of death is cut away from around his neck. ||10||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਰਮਾਇਆ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਅਮਨ-ਅਮਾਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਤੋਂ ਕੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
