The Guru Granth Sahib Ji contains teachings and the compositions of Sikh Gurus: Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Guru Angad Dev Ji, Guru Amar Das Ji, Guru Ram Das Ji, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Besides, that, it contains writings by Hindu and Muslim saints, asserting thereby the universal message of love, equability, and devotion to God. The scripture is written in Gurmukhi script and divided into sections known as Ragas, which have a specific musical mood associated with each.
It is recited and sung in Gurdwaras—the Sikh temples—during daily prayers and ceremonies. It offers Sikhs a source of spiritual counsel, inculcating peace, compassion, and unity. The scripture puts emphasis on service without selfish interest, equality, and attainment of spiritual enlightenment. The Guru Granth Sahib is something to be revered and continues to guide and elevate Sikhs all over the world.
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਇਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
jugah jugantar ih tat saar.
Throughout the ages, this (remembrance of God) has been the essence of reality,
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੁਗ ਵਿਚ (ਨਾਮ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦਾ) ਤੱਤ ਹੈ ਨਿਚੋੜ ਹੈ।
ਮਥੇ ਵਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨੁ ਜਮ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਮੁਤੇ ॥
mathay vaal pachhaarhi-an jam maarag mutay.
God leaves the slanderers to suffer in the fear of death as if grabbing them by the forelocks and throwing them on to the road of the demons of death;
(ਨਿੰਦਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ, ਮਾਨੋ,) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੇਸਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੜ ਕੇ ਭੁੰਞੇ ਪਟਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ (ਨਿਖਸਮੇ) ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ;
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
ih jag tayraa sabh tujheh Dhi-aa-ay.
O’ God, this entire world has been created by You and everyone lovingly remembers You,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥ ॥
parabh mayro anaath ko naath.
My God is the Master of the masterless.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਿਖਸਮਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਖਸਮ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੨੫॥੩੮॥
kar kirpaa naanak sukh paa-ay. ||4||25||38||
bestowing mercy, upon whom You blesses with Naam; O’ Nanak that person receives inner peace.||4||25||38||
ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈਂ):ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ!, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੨੫॥੩੮॥
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਸਗਲੇ ਕਾਮ ॥੩॥
pooran ho-ay saglay kaam. ||3||
and all his tasks are accomplished.||3||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਸਿਰੇ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਿਆ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh mohi bi-aapi-aa.
Similarly, that person remains afflicted with lust, anger, greed, and attachment,
ਤਿਂਵੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਗਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
bhagtaa man aanand gobind.
There is always bliss in the minds of God’s devotees.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਹੁਲਾਰਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭੈ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਏ ਖਿਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
bhai bharam binas ga-ay khin maahi.
Their fears and doubts are destroyed in an instant,
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਡਰ ਸਹਿਮ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕੜਕਿਓ ਕਾਲੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarbarahm parmaysar jan raakhay nindak kai sir karhki-o kaal. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the fear of death always keeps roaring over the slanerer’s head; but the supreme God has always protected his devotees. ||1||Pause||
ਤੁਹਮਤਾਂ ਲਾਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਦਾ ਗੱਜਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਨੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗਣ ਵਲੋਂ )ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
