Guru Granth Sahib enjoys a very central position as the religious scripture of Sikhism and is respected by Sikhs as the eternal Guru after the ten human Gurus. It consists of the hymns and the teachings of Sikh Gurus from Guru Nanak to Guru Tegh Bahadur; apart from these Gurus, it also includes contributions from many other saints and poets like Kabir and Farid, whom all the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, put together in 1604.
It contains 1,430 pages of material on a wide range of themes: the nature of God, leading a truthful life, meditating on God’s name, and rejecting superstitions and hollow rituals. In fact, more than being a spiritual guide, it is a treasure house of wisdom and moral instructions through which Sikhs live and practice their faith.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਹੈ ਜਾਤਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
gurmukh gi-aan ayko hai jaataa an-din naam raveejai hay. ||13||
The only wisdom for the Guru’s follower is that he knows God and always lovingly remembers Him. ||13||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲਈ ਗਿਆਨ ਇਹੋ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਉਹ ਕੇਵਲ ਇਕ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ॥
gurmukh naam sabad saalaahay.
Through the divine word, a Guru’s follower praises the Name of God,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸੁਖੁ ਪਲਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
sukh palar ti-aag mahaa dukh paavai.
and endures immense suffering by forsaking spiritual bliss for the sake of straw like worldly pleasures.
ਪਰਾਲੀ ਵਰਗੇ ਤੁਛ ਸਂਸਾਰਕ ਪਦਰਾਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਬੜਾ ਦੁੱਖ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਵਡੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
vadai bhaag ih sareer paa-i-aa.
By great good fortune, I received this gift of human body;
ਪਰਮ ਚੰਗੇ ਨਸੀਬਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੇਹ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
satgur man vasi-aa liv laa-ee.
they enshrine the true Guru in their mind and remain focused on his teachings.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਵੱਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਭਿ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਨਾਸਹਿ ॥
gur simrat sabh kilvikh naaseh.
By always remembering the Guru and following his teachings, all sins vanish.
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
maaroo mehlaa 5.
Raag Maaroo, Fifth Guru:
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਮਿਟਾਵਉ ॥
janam janam kee mail mitaava-o.
and thus be able to eradicate the filth of vices of my countless births.
ਅਤੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਦੀ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ।
ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਵਿਸਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
nimakh na visrahu parabh mayray su-aamee.
O’ my Master-God, bless me that I may not forget You even for an instant.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ), ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅੱਖ ਝਮਕਣ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਸਮੇ ਲਈ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਵਿਸਰ।
