The Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also called the Adi Granth, is the main sacred book for the Sikhs. It is considered to be the eternal Guru by them after their ten human Gurus. It was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru Guru Arjan in 1604 and later expanded upon by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. It contains 1430 pages and is written in Gurmukhi script. This holy book is a collection of hymns written by Sikh Gurus and different saints from different backgrounds and from the beginning of Khalsa religion.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਣਾ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
gurmukh amrit peevnaa vaahu vaahu karahi liv laa-ay.
The Gurmukhs drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of Naam, and they center their consciousness on God’s Praises.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਲ-ਪਾਨ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਲਈ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ), ਉਹ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਸਾਈ ਮੈਡਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਤੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
daanaa beenaa saa-ee maidaa naanak saar na jaanaa tayree. ||1||
You are all-wise and all-knowing, O’ my Master; Nanak: I have not appreciated Your value.||1||
ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਖਸਮ (ਮੇਰੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ) ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ, ਪਰ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਤੀ। ਨਾਨਕ (ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)! ॥੧॥
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bahur na ho-ay tayraa aavan jaan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and after that the cycle of birth and death would end fo you. ||1||Pause||
ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੰਮਣਾ ਮਰਨਾ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਇਗਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੋ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਲਤੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਹੋਣੀ ॥੧॥
kar kirpaa kar leeno apunaa jaltay seetal honee. ||1||
Bestowing mercy, God has made me His own; I was burning with the fierce worldly desires, but now I feel calm and cool.||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਸੜ ਰਿਹਾ ਸਾਂ, ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ-ਚਿੱਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥

Raag Devgandhari, Fifth Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੁੜੀਏ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੋ ਰਾਮ ॥੧॥
naanak har jap sukh paa-i-aa mayree jindurhee-ay sabh dookh nivaaranhaaro raam. ||1||
O’ Nanak, I have found peace by meditating on God, who is the Destroyer of all pain. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਬਿਨਵੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਨਿਵਾਸੋ ॥੧॥
binvant naanak Dhaar kirpaa har charan kamal nivaaso. ||1||
Nanak humbly submits: O’ God, show mercy and bless me, that my mind may always remain attuned to Your immaculate Name. ||1|
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ! ਤੇਰੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਕੋਮਲ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਗਲਤੁ ਭਏ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਰਾਮ ॥
man tan galat bha-ay kichh kahan na jaa-ee raam.
The mind and heart become so elated in the love of God that nothing can be said about it.
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ।
