Sikhs consider the Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the eternal living Guru and main holy scripture of Sikhism. The fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan, put together the origin in the year 1604. It is a combination of the teachings of the Sikh Gurus as well as several saints from diverse religious and social backgrounds which reflects a message of universal brotherhood and spiritual wisdom.
“The Guru Granth Sahib Ji is characterized by the following: Its organization into 1,430 pages known as Angs, is written in Gurmukhi script, divided into 31 Ragas (musical measures) into which the hymns are classified.”
Contents: are three thousand eight hundred and four hymnals or (Shabads) containing teachings by six Sikh Gurus (Guru Nanak, Guru Arjan, Guru Tegh Bahadur), thirty other saints and poets like Kabir, Ravidas, Sheikh Farid on different subjects ranging from godliness to meditation; ethics morality as well as dispelling superstitious beliefs related to harmful social practices such as untouchability based on castes.
ਮਾਲੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਵੈਸੀ ਰਹਿਓ ਪੈਨਣੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
maal joban chhod vaisee rahi-o painan khaa-i-aa.
Abandoning your wealth and youth, you will have to leave, without any food or clothing.
ਇਹ ਧਨ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਤੁਰ ਜਾਏਗਾ, ਤਦੋਂ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਖਾਣਾ ਪਹਿਨਣਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਏਗਾ।

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the true Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਰੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਫੂਟੀ ॥
kaam kroDh maa-i-aa lai jaaree tarisnaa gaagar footee.
I have burnt away all my lust, anger and the influence of Maya; the pitcher of worldly desires within me is smashed.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਮਟਕੀ ਟੁੱਟ ਗਈ ਹੈ,
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਗਹੀਨ ਮਤਿ ਫੀਕੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਹੈ ॥
durmat bhaagheen mat feekay naam sunat aavai man rohai.
Those unfortunate persons, misguided by bad advice, are of shallow intellect; upon hearing God’s Name they feel enraged in their minds.
ਭੈੜੀ ਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਦ-ਕਿਸਮਤਿ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਕਲ ਭੀ ਹੌਲੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਸਗੋਂ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਸਗਲ ਕਰਤ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੋ ॥
patit pavitar lee-ay kar apunay sagal karat namaskaaro.
God sanctifies the sinners and makes them His devotees; then all pay obeisance to them.
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਾਰੀ ਲੁਕਾਈ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

ਰੋਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬਖਸ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਈ ॥੩॥
I ros karai parabh bakhas na maytai nit nit charhai savaa-ee. ||3||
I Even if one is resentful, God does not withhold His blessings; day by day, they increase. ||3||
(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਜੇ ਨਿੰਦਕ (ਇਹ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ) ਖਿੱਝੇ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਬੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਗੋਂ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਸਬਦੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਖੋਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲੀਤਾ ॥
sabday ha-umai kho-ee-ai har mayl mileetaa.
By reflecting on the word of the Guru he sheds his ego and is united with God.
