Guru Granth Sahib, commonly known as Adi Granth, is the primary holy scripture of Sikhism. It was compiled by Guru Arjan, who was the fifth Guru of Sikhism. First installed at Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar in 1604, it is a voluminous book of hymns and the teaching of Sikh Gurus, besides the contribution of other saints/poets of different spiritual traditions. It is considered the eternal Guru by Sikhs, inculcating spiritual wisdom and guiding the whole of humankind.
The Guru Granth Sahib consists of 1,430 pages and covers a wide range of themes, including the nature of God, the importance of truthful living, the value of meditation on God’s name, and the rejection of superstitions and rituals.
ਜਿਨਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਗਲੇ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
jin banDhan kaatay saglay mayray.
who has cut off all my bonds of Maya.
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੋ ਨਾਹਿ ਡੁਲਾਨਾ ॥
jin har saad paa-i-aa so naahi dulaanaa.
One who obtains this relish of Naam does not waver.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ) ਕਦੇ ਡੋਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਸੁਣਿ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
sun saajan mayray meet pi-aaray.
O’ my dear friend and companion God, please listen to my supplication,
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਣ।
ਮਾਝ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Raag Maajh, by the Fifth Guru:
ਬੁਧਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਪੈ ॥
buDh si-aanap kichhoo na jaapai.
No one can know His Ways through his personal wisdom or cleverness.
(ਉਸ ਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ) ਅਕਲ ਜਾਂ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ (ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦੀ।
ਸੋਈ ਸਾਜਨ ਮੀਤੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
so-ee saajan meet pi-aaraa.
He alone is a companion, a friend, and a beloved,
ਉਹੋ ਹੀ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ,
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਰੁ ਭਾਗੋ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਉ ॥
sabad marai taa maar mar bhaago kis peh jaa-o.
When one eradicates egotism through the Guru’s word, one overcomes the fear of physical death; otherwise, where can I go to escape death?
(ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ (ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਉਂਞ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ) ਭੱਜ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ?
ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
na-o darvaajay dasvai muktaa anhad sabad vajaavani-aa. ||3||
Then, one rises beyond the apparent nine senses and realizes the tenth hidden sense, the door to liberation, and experiences the unstuck divine melody.
ਤਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੌ ਗੋਲਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਸਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦੁਆਰ ਵਿਚ (ਭਾਵ, ਵਿਚਾਰ ਮੰਡਲ ਵਿਚ) ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਭਨਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਵਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
sabhnaa pir vasai sadaa naalay.
Our Master is always within us.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਸਦਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ (ਸਭ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਬੇਦ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
simrit saasat bayd vakhaanai.
A pundit who simply delivers lectures on Simritis, Shastras and Vedas,
(ਪੰਡਿਤ) ਵੈਦ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ (ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕ) ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
