ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਈ ॥
saach ratay sach amrit jihvaa mithi-aa mail na raa-ee.
Those who are imbued with God’s love, ambrosial Name of God is always on their tongue and they do not have even an iota of the filth of falsehood.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਉਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ , ਝੂਠ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਤਾ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
nirmal naam amrit ras chaakhi-aa sabad ratay pat paa-ee. ||3||
They meditate on the immaculate Naam and taste the ambrosial nectar of Naam; imbued with the divine word, they receive honor (both here and hereafter). ||3||
ਉਹ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ (ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ), ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਚੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੩॥
ਗੁਣੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥
gunee gunee mil laahaa paavas gurmukh naam vadaa-ee.
When virtuous people meet each other, they earn the profit of Naam and attain honor by uniting with God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਣਵਾਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਣਵਾਨ ਸੇਵਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਪਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥
saglay dookh miteh gur sayvaa naanak naam sakhaa-ee. ||4||5||6||
O’ Nanak, by following the Guru’s teachings, all their sufferings vanish and God’s Name becomes their companion forever. ||4||5||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥

Raag Bhairao, First Guru:
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਧਨੁ ਧਾਰਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
hirdai naam sarab Dhan Dhaaran gur parsaadee paa-ee-ai.
God’s Name enshrined in the heart is the wealth and support for all the spiritual needs of the beings, but it is received only through the Guru’s grace.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣਾ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਲਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਧਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਮਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
amar padaarath tay kirtaarath sahj Dhi-aan liv laa-ee-ai. ||1||
The human life becomes fulfilled by attaining this imperishable wealth, and in a state of spiritual poise, the mind remains focused on God’s Name. ||1||
ਇਸ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸੁਰਤ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
man ray raam bhagat chit laa-ee-ai.
O’ my mind, we should focus our mind on devotional worship of God.
ਹੇ ਮਨ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh raam naam jap hirdai sahj saytee ghar jaa-ee-ai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
By lovingly remembering God in the heart through the Guru’s teachings, one intuitively reaches his divine home (unites with God’s Name). ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਉਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰ ਕੇ ,ਆਰਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
bharam bhayd bha-o kabahu na chhootas aavat jaat na jaanee.
As long as one does not realize God, his doubt, separation from God and fear of death never vanish and he remains in the cycle of birth and death.
ਜਦ ਤਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਦਾਚਿਤ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨॥
bin har naam ko mukat na paavas doob mu-ay bin paanee. ||2||
Nobody ever receives liberation from the vices without remembering God’ Name; people remain engrossed in vices as if they drown without water and die. ||2||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮੌਖਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਹੀ ਡੁਬ ਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੨॥
ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
DhanDhaa karat saglee pat khovas bharam na mitas gavaaraa.
By always remaining busy in worldly affairs, an ignorant person loses all his honor and still his doubt does not go away.
ਬੇਸਮਝ ਬੰਦਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਦੌੜ-ਭੱਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਗਵਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਸਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੁੱਕਦੀ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin gur sabad mukat nahee kab hee anDhulay DhanDh pasaaraa. ||3||
One is never freed from the worldly bond without reflecting on the Guru’s world; for a spiritually ignorant, the world remains an expanse of worldly affairs. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਲਈ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਧੰਧਿਆ ਦਾ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥
akul niranjan si-o man maani-aa man hee tay man moo-aa.
The mind which is appeased with the immaculate God who has no lineage, all the materialistic thoughts of that mind gets subdued within the mind itself.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਗਿੱਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਕ ਫੁਰਨਿਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਉਸ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਚਾਉ-ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੀ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥
antar baahar ayko jaani-aa naanak avar na doo-aa. ||4||6||7||
O’ Nanak, that mind realizes the same God within and in the entire world, and none other at all. ||4||6||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਝਦਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥

Raag Bhairao, First Guru:
ਜਗਨ ਹੋਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਿਤ ਦੂਖ ਸਹੈ ॥
jagan hom punn tap poojaa dayh dukhee nit dookh sahai.
One hosts Yajnas (community feasts), lights sacred fires, gives to charities, does penances and worships, still he endures pains and sorrows;
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੱਗ ਹਵਨ ਪੁੰਨ-ਦਾਨ, ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾਹੈ ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਉਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥
raam naam bin mukat na paavas mukat naam gurmukh lahai. ||1||
because no one can attain liberation from the vices without remembering God’s Name; yes this liberation is attained only by focusing on Naam through the Guru’s teachings. ||1||
ਕਿਉਂਕੇਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ, ਇਹ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥
raam naam bin birthay jag janmaa.
Useless is the birth of those in the world who do not remember God’s Name.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣਾ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bikh khaavai bikh bolee bolai bin naavai nihfal mar bharmanaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One who does not remember God’s Name, he gets so involved in evil deeds as if he is eating poison and uttering poisonous words; his life remains useless, he spiritually deteriorates and keeps wandering in reincarnations. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥
pustak paath bi-aakaran vakhaanai sanDhi-aa karam tikaal karai.
One does reading of holy books, deliver lectures on rules of grammar, and say prayers three times a day.
(ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ) ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਠ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਕਰਣ ਆਦਿਕ (ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿੰਨ ਵੇਲੇ (ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼) ਸੰਧਿਆ-ਕਰਮ ਭੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥
bin gur sabad mukat kahaa paraanee raam naam bin urajh marai. ||2||
but O’ mortal, how can one attain freedom from vices without reflecting on the Guru’s word? Without remembering God’s Name, he remains engrossed in vices and spiritually deteriorates. ||2||
ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਹਰ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਸਕਦੀ। ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
dand kamandal sikhaa soot Dhotee tirath gavan at bharman karai.
A yogi wanders excessively around holy places, holding a staff and a begging bowl in his hand, sporting a hair-tuft and wearing a loin-cloth and sacred thread,
ਜੋਗੀ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਡੰਡਾ ਤੇ ਖੱਪਰ ਫੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਬੋਦੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਨੇਊ ਤੇ ਧੋਤੀ ਪਹਿਨਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜੋਗੀ) ਤੀਰਥ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਤੇ ਧਰਤੀ-ਭ੍ਰਮਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin saaNt na aavai jap har har naam so paar parai. ||3||
still one does not attain inner peace without remembering God’s Name; but one who meditates on God’s Name is ferried across the worldly ocean of vices. ||3||
(ਪਰ ਇਹਨੀਂ ਕੰਮੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦੀ। ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
jataa mukat tan bhasam lagaa-ee bastar chhod tan nagan bha-i-aa.
One may weave his matted hair in to a crown, smear his body with ashes and discarding clothes he remains naked,
ਜਟਾਂ ਦਾ ਜੂੜਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਪਿੰਡੇ ਤੇ ਸੁਆਹ ਮਲ ਲਈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਉਤੋਂ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਉਤਾਰ ਕੇ ਨੰਗਾ ਰਹਿਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਿਆ,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭੇਖੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥
raam naam bin taripat na aavai kirat kai baaNDhai bhaykh bha-i-aa. ||4||
without remembering God’s Name he does not become satiated from worldly desires; bound by pre-ordained destiny, he adopts prescribed holy garbs. ||4||
ਪਿਛਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਲਈ (ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਅਡੰਬਰ) ਨਿਰਾ ਬਾਹਰਲਾ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਲਿਬਾਸ ਹੀ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਮਨ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੪॥
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥
jaytay jee-a jant jal thal mahee-al jatar katar too sarab jee-aa.
O’ God, as many are the creatures and beings in the waters, lands and skies, wherever they are, You are pervading all of them.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਜਿਤਨੇ ਭੀ ਜੀਵ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈਂ।
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੋਲਿ ਪੀਆ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥
gur parsaad raakh lay jan ka-o har ras naanak jhol pee-aa. ||5||7||8||
O’ Nanak, the one whom God saves from the vices through the Guru’s grace, he lovingly remembers God as if savoring the elixir of God’s Name. ||5||7||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਬੜੇ ਸੁਆਦ ਨਾਲ ਪੀਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥

One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru:
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥
jaat kaa garab na karee-ahu ko-ee.
No one should be arrogant about his social class and status.
ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਧਿਰ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰਿਓ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
barahm binday so baraahman ho-ee. ||1||
He alone is a Brahmin, who realizes God. ||1||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ) ਨਾਲ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
jaat kaa garab na kar moorakh gavaaraa.
O’ foolish ignorant man, do not be arrogant about your caste.
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਹੇ ਗੰਵਾਰ! (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤਿ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਨਾਹ ਕਰ।
