ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
gurmukh hovai so sojhee paa-ay.
The one who follows the Guru’s teachings, attains understanding about righteous living,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
ha-umai maa-i-aa bharam gavaa-ay.
and gets rid of egotism and illusion of Maya, the worldly riches and power.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਊਤਮ ਊਚੀ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥
gur kee pa-orhee ootam oochee dar sachai har gun gaa-idaa. ||7||
He sings the praises of God in His presence, and attains the supreme spiritual status which is like climbing the Guru’s sublime and exalted ladder. ||7||.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ (ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ) ਉੱਚੀ ਤੇ ਉੱਤਮ ਪੌੜੀ (ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉੱਚੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ) ॥੭॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
gurmukh sach sanjam karnee saar.
The Guru’s follower lovingly remembers God and practices self-control; for him this alone is the deed worth doing.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ,ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰੋਕਦਾ ਹੈ-ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕੰਮ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਏ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
gurmukh paa-ay mokh du-aar.
A Guru’s follower finds the way to liberation from vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਇਹ) ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥
bhaa-ay bhagat sadaa rang raataa aap gavaa-ay samaa-idaa. ||8||
A Guru’s follower always remains imbued with the loving devotional worship of God and forsaking his self conceit, merges in Him.||8||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਮਨੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
gurmukh hovai man khoj sunaa-ay.
A Guru’s follower, searches the mind and tells others how he feels about it,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਖੋਜ ਕੇ (ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਇਹ) ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਦਾ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
sachai naam sadaa liv laa-ay.
and he always focuses his mind on the eternal God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਚੇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥
jo tis bhaavai so-ee karsee jo sachay man bhaa-idaa. ||9||
He does whatever pleases the eternal God; yes, he would only do that, which is pleasing to Him.||9||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
jaa tis bhaavai satguroo milaa-ay.
When it pleases God, He unites a person with the true Guru.
ਜਦੋਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
jaa tis bhaavai taa man vasaa-ay.
When it pleases God, He enshrines His Name in one’s mind.
ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ) ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਣੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
aapnai bhaanai sadaa rang raataa bhaanai man vasaa-idaa. ||10||
One whom God keeps in His command, that person always remains imbued with His love; God enshrines His Name in one’s mind by His pleasure. ||10||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ (ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਮਨਹਠਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸੋ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
manhath karam karay so chheejai.
One who performs ritualistic deeds by the obstinacy of mind, his spiritual life keeps deteriorating,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਹਠ ਨਾਲ (ਹੀ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਲੋਂ) ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
bahutay bhaykh karay nahee bheejai.
He adopts many religious disguises but never gets imbued with God’s love.
ਉਹ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਪਹਿਰਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਬਥੇਰੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ (ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ) ਭਿੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖੇ ਦੁਖਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥
bikhi-aa raatay dukh kamaaveh dukhay dukh samaa-idaa. ||11||
Engrossed in the love for Maya, people endure misery; due to this love for materialism one gets consumed in sorrow one after the other.||11||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗ਼ਰਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
gurmukh hovai so sukh kamaa-ay.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, enjoys inner peace through his deeds,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਆਪਣੇ ਉੱਦਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਖੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮਰਣ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
maran jeevan kee sojhee paa-ay.
and comes to understand the truth about spiritual life and spiritual death.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ।
ਮਰਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਜੋ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥
maran jeevan jo sam kar jaanai so mayray parabh bhaa-idaa. ||12||
One who deems life and death alike, is pleasing to my God.||12||
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੌਤ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰਹਿ ਸੁ ਹਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
gurmukh mareh so heh parvaan.
Those who follow the Guru’s teachings and eradicate their egotism, are approved in God’s presence.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਕਬੂਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
aavan jaanaa sabad pachhaan.
O’ brother, understand that birth and death is according to God’s Command.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਹੀ ਸਮਝ।
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥
marai na jammai naa dukh paa-ay man hee maneh samaa-idaa. ||13||
One who understands it, does not fall in the cycle of birth and death, does not endure misery and his mind remains absorbed in itself.||13||
(ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਉਂ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਉਹ (ਇਹ) ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
say vadbhaagee jinee satgur paa-i-aa.
Very fortunate are those who have met the true Guru,
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਿਆ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
ha-umai vichahu moh chukaa-i-aa.
and have eradicated their egotism and love for Maya.
ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ ।
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥
man nirmal fir mail na laagai dar sachai sobhaa paa-idaa. ||14||
One whose mind becomes immaculate, the dirt of vices does not stick to it again, and he receives honor in God’s presence. ||14||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦੀ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ॥
aapay karay karaa-ay aapay.
God Himself does everything and gets it done from the beings.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਕੁਝ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥
aapay vaykhai thaap uthaapay.
He Himself takes care of all; He Himself creates and then destroys the creation.
ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਸਭ ਦੀ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਣਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥
gurmukh sayvaa mayray parabh bhaavai sach sun laykhai paa-idaa. ||15||
The rememberance of God done through the Guru’s teachings is pleasing to my God; listening to a person remembering Him, God approves his this effort. ||15||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh sacho sach kamaavai.
A Guru’s follower earns the wealth of Naam by lovingly remembering God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh nirmal mail na laavai.
A Guru’s follower remains immaculate and does not soil his mind with evils.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾਹੀ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੫॥
naanak naam ratay veechaaree naamay naam samaa-idaa. ||16||1||15||
O’ Nanak, those who remain imbued with Naam, become conscious of the righteous living; by meditating on God’s Name, such a person remains immersed in Naam. ||16||1||15||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੫॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਭ ਸਾਜੀ ॥
aapay sarisat hukam sabh saajee.
God Himself has created this entire universe by His command.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨਾਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ਨਿਵਾਜੀ ॥
aapay thaap uthaap nivaajee.
God Himself creates the beings, embellishes with grace and then destroys them.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਨਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ) ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥
aapay ni-aa-o karay sabh saachaa saachay saach milaa-idaa. ||1||
God Himself administers true justice; the eternal God unites the true ones with Himself.||1||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਆਕਾਰਾ ॥
kaa-i-aa kot hai aakaaraa.
This fortress like-human body is the tangible form of God.
(ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ (ਮਾਨੋ ਇਕ) ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ l
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥
maa-i-aa moh pasri-aa paasaaraa.
But if it is engrossed only in the love for materialism,
ਪਰ ਜੇ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਖਿਲਾਰਾ ਖਿਲਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਭਸਮੈ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥
bin sabdai bhasmai kee dhayree khayhoo khayh ralaa-idaa. ||2||
then without the divine word of God’s praises, it is like a heap of ashes; without meditating on Naam, one reduces the dignity of his body to dirt. ||2||
ਤਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ) ਸੁਆਹ ਦੀ ਢੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਹੈ, (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜਿਆ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿੱਟੀ-ਖੇਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਰੋਲ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
kaa-i-aa kanchan kot apaaraa.
That human body is invaluable like a fort of gold, the infinite God’s abode,
ਉਹ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਸੋਨੇ ਦਾ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
jis vich ravi-aa sabad apaaraa.
in which the divine word of the infinite God is always present.
ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh gaavai sadaa gun saachay mil pareetam sukh paa-idaa. ||3||
The Guru’s follower always sings the praises of the eternal God and enjoys inner peace by realizing his beloved-God. ||3||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਦਾ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਕਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
kaa-i-aa har mandar har aap savaaray.
The human body is the temple of God, which He Himself embellishes.
ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ (ਪਵਿੱਤਰ) ਘਰ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵਸੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥
tis vich har jee-o vasai muraaray.
In it resides reverend God, the slayer of demon-like vices.
ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਣਜਨਿ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥
gur kai sabad vanjan vaapaaree nadree aap milaa-idaa. ||4||
Those human traders who trade in Naam through the Guru’s word; by His glance of grace, God unites them with Himself. ||4||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਜੀਵ-ਵਣਜਾਰੇ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਨਾਲ) ਮਿਲਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸੋ ਸੂਚਾ ਜਿ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥
so soochaa je karoDh nivaaray.
One who eradicates his anger is immaculate,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੈ।
ਸਬਦੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਆਪੁ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
sabday boojhai aap savaaray.
He understands the Guru’s word and embellishes his life.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਵਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥
aapay karay karaa-ay kartaa aapay man vasaa-idaa. ||5||
The Creator Himself does and gets everything done; God Himself enshrines His Name in one’s mind.||5||
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥
nirmal bhagat hai niraalee.
Devotional worship makes life immaculate and is a unique gift from God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ (ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ) ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ (ਇਕ) ਅਨੋਖੀ (ਦਾਤਿ) ਹੈ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
man tan Dhoveh sabad veechaaree.
Those who wash the dirt of vices from their mind and body through the Guru’s word, they become spiritually thoughtful.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਧੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
