ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥
gur kai sabad har naam vakhaanai.
and he lovingly recites God’s Name through the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥
an-din naam rataa din raatee maa-i-aa moh chukaahaa hay. ||8||
He always remains absorbed in God’s Name and gets rid of the love for Maya. ||8||
ਉਹ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur sayvaa tay sabh kichh paa-ay.
By following the Guru’s teachings, one obtains everything,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰੇਕ ਚੀਜ਼ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
ha-umai mayraa aap gavaa-ay.
and gets rid of egotism, emotional attachments and self-conceit.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਪੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥
aapay kirpaa karay sukh-daata gur kai sabday sohaa hay. ||9||
God, the benefactor of inner peace, bestows mercy on him and he embellishes his spiritual life by following the Guru’s word. ||9||
ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
gur kaa sabad amrit hai banee.
O’ brother, the Guru’s word is spiritually rejuvenating,
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਹੈ,
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
an-din har kaa naam vakhaanee.
therefore, always focus on it and lovingly remember God’s Name
(ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ) ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਕਰ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੋ ਘਟੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥
har har sachaa vasai ghat antar so ghat nirmal taahaa hay. ||10||
One in whose heart manifests the eternal God, that person’s heart becomes immaculate.||10||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੦॥
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ॥
sayvak sayveh sabad salaaheh.
God’s devotees lovingly meditate and praise Him through the Guru’s word.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ) ਸੇਵਕ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ-ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ॥
sadaa rang raatay har gun gaavahi.
Being always imbued with God’s love, they keep singing His praises.
ਸਦੀਵ ਹੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗੇ ਹੋਏ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਪਰਮਲ ਵਾਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥
aapay bakhsay sabad milaa-ay parmal vaas man taahaa hay. ||11||
Upon whom God bestows mercy and unites with the Guru’s word, he becomes so immaculate as if the perfume of sandalwood abides in his mind. ||11||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਮਾਨੋ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਸਬਦੇ ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥੇ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ॥
sabday akath kathay saalaahay.
One who describes the virtues of the indescribable God through the Guru’s word,
ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਅਕੱਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਆਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੇ ॥
mayray parabh saachay vayparvaahay.
and keep singing praises of my carefree eternal God;
ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
aapay gundaataa sabad milaa-ay sabdai kaa ras taahaa hay. ||12||
God, the benefactor of virtues, unites that person with the Guru’s word, and he starts enjoying the bliss of the divine word.||12||
ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਆਉਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
manmukh bhoolaa tha-ur na paa-ay.
A self-willed person goes astray from the righteous path of life, and does not find any place for inner peace.
ਮਨ ਦਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸਹੀ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਖੁੰਝ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਟਕਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ), ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ) ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾl
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
jo Dhur likhi-aa so karam kamaa-ay.
He does those deeds which are predestined for him.
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਕਰਮ ਉਹ ਹੁਣ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤੇ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਖੋਜੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
bikhi-aa raatay bikhi-aa khojai mar janmai dukh taahaa hay. ||13||
Being engrossed in the love for Maya, he keeps looking for more of this and endures the misery of the repeated births and deaths. ||13||
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਹੁਣ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਮਰਨ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਣ ਦਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਉਠਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੇ ॥
aapay aap aap saalaahay.
God Himself praises Himself (by pervading human beings).
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਾ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੇ ॥
tayray gun parabh tujh hee maahay.
O’ God, Your virtues are within You alone.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹਨ l
ਤੂ ਆਪਿ ਸਚਾ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੀ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਅਥਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
too aap sachaa tayree banee sachee aapay alakh athaahaa hay. ||14||
O’ God! You are eternal and eternal are the hymns of Your praises; You are indescribable and unfathomable.’||14||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈਂ, ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਅਲੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੈਂ ॥੧੪॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
bin gur daatay ko-ay na paa-ay.
No one can realize God without following the teachings of the beneficent Guru,
ਦਾਤਾਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ,
ਲਖ ਕੋਟੀ ਜੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
lakh kotee jay karam kamaa-ay.
even if he performs millions of ritualistic deeds.
ਭਾਵੇਂ, ਉਹ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਕਰਮਕਾਂਡਾਂ ਪਿਆ ਕਰੇ l
ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਬਦੇ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥
gur kirpaa tay ghat antar vasi-aa sabday sach saalaahaa hay. ||15||
By the Guru’s grace, in whose heart God manifests, he keeps praising the eternal God through the Guru’s word.||15||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥
ਸੇ ਜਨ ਮਿਲੇ ਧੁਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
say jan milay Dhur aap milaa-ay.
Only those unite with God whom He has preordained this union.
ਕੇਵਲ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧੁਰੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਾਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥
saachee banee sabad suhaa-ay.
Their lives become embellished through the Guru’s word of the praises of God.
ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥੧੩॥
naanak jan gun gaavai nit saachay gun gaavah gunee samaahaa hay. ||16||4||13||
O’ Nanak, a devotee of God always sings praises of the eternal God: O’ brother, let us sing His praises; one who does, merges in the virtuous God. ||16||4||3||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਆਓ, ਅਸੀਂ ਭੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਏ। (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ) ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੬॥੪॥੧੩॥
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥

Raag Maaroo, Third Guru:
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nihchal ayk sadaa sach so-ee.
God is eternal, yes God alone is immortal,
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਹੈ;
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
pooray gur tay sojhee ho-ee.
this understanding is attained from the perfect Guru.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਭੀਨੇ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥
har ras bheenay sadaa Dhi-aa-in gurmat seel sannaahaa hay. ||1||
Those who are imbued with the elixir of God’s Name, they always remember Him; by following the Guru’s teachings, they remain so humble as if they are wearing an armor of humility. ||1||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਭਿੱਜੇ ਹੇਏ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਇਨਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਆਚਰਨ ਦਾ ਸੰਜੋਅ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
andar rang sadaa sachi-aaraa.
One within whose heart is the love for God, he is always truthful.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥
gur kai sabad har naam pi-aaraa.
Through the Guru’s Divine Word, such a person remains imbued with the love for God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
na-o niDh naam vasi-aa ghat antar chhodi-aa maa-i-aa kaa laahaa hay. ||2||
God’s Name, all the treasure of the world, is enshrined in his heart and he has renounced the love for Maya, the worldly wealth and power.||2||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਲਾਭ ਖਟਣਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤਾਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੋਈ ॥
ra-ee-at raajay durmat do-ee.
Because of the evil intellect both the king and his subjects are engrossed in duality, the love of things other than God.
ਖੋਟੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਾਕਮ ਤੇ ਪਰਜਾ ਸਭ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
bin satgur sayvay ayk na ho-ee.
Without following the teachings of the true Guru, the eternal God doesn’t manifest in them.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਾਜੁ ਤਿਨਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥
ayk Dhi-aa-in sadaa sukh paa-in nihchal raaj tinaahaa hay. ||3||
But those who lovingly remember God, always enjoy such spiritual bliss, as if their kingdom is everlasting.||3||
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਰਖੈ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
aavan jaanaa rakhai na ko-ee.
No one can save the beings from the cycle of birth and death
ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਚਾ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥.
jaman maran tisai tay ho-ee.
This cycle of birth and death happens as per God’s will.
ਇਹ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ (ਦਾ ਚੱਕਰ) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਸਦਾ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
gurmukh saachaa sadaa Dhi-aavahu gat mukat tisai tay paahaa hay. ||4||
So, follow the Guru’s teachings and always meditate on the eternal God, because higher spiritual status and liberation from vices is received only from God. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਿੱਤ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੋ। ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਸਚੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ॥
sach sanjam satguroo du-aarai.
The true self-control over vices is attained only through the Guru’s teachings,
ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਦਾ ਪੱਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ (ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਹਉਮੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥
ha-umai kroDh sabad nivaarai.
and one eradicates egotism and anger through the Guru’s divine word.
ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਅਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
satgur sayv sadaa sukh paa-ee-ai seel santokh sabh taahaa hay. ||5||
By following the true Guru’s teachings, one always attains inner peace; righteous conduct and contentment also comes from the Guru’s teachings. ||5||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ। ਚੰਗਾ ਆਚਰਨ, ਸੰਤੋਖ-ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੋਹੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
ha-umai moh upjai sansaaraa.
By remaining entangled in worldly affairs, egotism and love for materialism wells-up within a person.
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਖਚਿਤ ਰਿਹਾਂ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਹਉਮੈ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਾ ॥
sabh jag binsai naam visaaraa.
and the entire world spiritually deteriorates by forsaking God’s Name.
ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਸਹੇੜ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਜਗਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥
bin satgur sayvay naam na paa-ee-ai naam sachaa jag laahaa hay. ||6||
God’s Name is not realized without following the true Guru’s teachings; and Naam is the only true profit in this world.||6||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ। ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਖੱਟੀ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ਸਚਾ ਅਮਰੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
sachaa amar sabad suhaa-i-aa.
One whom the eternal command of God becomes pleasing through the Guru’s word,
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਆ ॥
panch sabad mil vaajaa vaa-i-aa.
feels such spiritual bliss as if within him is playing the divine melody of five primal sounds.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਉਂ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਪੰਜ ਹੀ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਰਾਗ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
