ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
sach bin bhavjal jaa-ay na tari-aa.
The world-ocean of vices cannot be crossed over without remembering God.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੰਘ ਸਕੀਦਾ।
ਏਹੁ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਰਿਆ ॥
ayhu samund athaahu mahaa bikh bhari-aa.
This vast world-ocean is unfathomable and full of vices which is poison for the spiritual life.
ਇਹ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
rahai ateet gurmat lay oopar har nirbha-o kai ghar paa-i-aa. ||6||
One who follows the Guru’s teachings remains unaffected by the worldly desires and vices, attains a place in fearless God’s presence.||6||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ-ਭਰੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਨਿਡਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਥਾਂ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੬॥
ਝੂਠੀ ਜਗ ਹਿਤ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
jhoothee jag hit kee chaturaa-ee.
The cleverness of loving the worldly things is false and in vain.
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ (ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ) ਮੋਹ ਦੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਲਮ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
bilam na laagai aavai jaa-ee.
Because, it does not take any time to lose one’s worldly wealth; one who remains attached to it, remains in the cycle of birth and death.
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ (ਜਗਤ ਦੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਸਾਥ ਮੁੱਕਦਿਆਂ) ਰਤਾ ਚਿਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਖਪਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
naam visaar chaleh abhimaanee upjai binas khapaa-i-aa. ||7||
Those who feel arrogant because of their wealth and depart from here forsaking God’s Name are wasted away in perpetual pains of births and deaths. ||7||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਭੁਲਾ ਕੇ (ਇਥੋਂ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਹੱਥ) ਤੁਰ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਜੋ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਉਪਜਹਿ ਬਿਨਸਹਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਬੰਧੇ ॥
upjahi binsahi banDhan banDhay.
Bound in the worldly bonds, people remain in the cycle of birth and death,
ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝੇ ਹੋਏ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ,
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਗਲਿ ਫੰਧੇ ॥
ha-umai maa-i-aa kay gal fanDhay.
because they always have the noose of egotism and Maya around their necks.
ਕਿਉਂਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਦੇ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
jis raam naam naahee mat gurmat so jam pur banDh chalaa-i-aa. ||8||
One who has not realized God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings, suffers so much as if he is bound and driven to the city of death. ||8||
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਸ ਮੋਹ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਬੱਝ ਕੇ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਧੱਕਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੋਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
gur bin mokh mukat ki-o paa-ee-ai.
How can anyone be liberated from vices without following the Guru’s teachings?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ?
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਉ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
bin gur raam naam ki-o Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
How can anyone remember God without following the Guru teachings?
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਿਮਰਿਆਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ?
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਰਹੁ ਭਵ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਭਏ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
gurmat layho tarahu bhav dutar mukat bha-ay sukh paa-i-aa. ||9||
O’ brother, follow the Guru’s teachings and swim across the unswimmable world ocean of vices; those who got liberated from vices attained inner peace. ||9||
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਵੋਗੇ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਔਖਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬੱਚ ਨਿਕਲੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ॥੯॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨਿ ਗੋਵਰਧਨ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
gurmat krisan govarDhan Dhaaray.
Lord Krishna lifted the mount Govardhan by following the Guru’s teachings,
ਇਸੇ ਗੁਰਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ (ਜੀ) ਨੇ ਗੋਵਰਧਨ ਪਹਾੜ ਨੂੰ (ਉਂਗਲਾਂ ਤੇ) ਚੁੱਕ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਾਇਰਿ ਪਾਹਣ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
gurmat saa-ir paahan taaray.
and through the Guru’s teachings, lord Rama floated stones in the sea.
ਤੇ (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ) ਪੱਥਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਤਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਸਨ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
gurmat layho param pad paa-ee-ai naanak gur bharam chukaa-i-aa. ||10||
O’ Nanak, one who followed the Guru’s teachings, the Guru eradicated his doubt and he attained the supreme spiritual status. ||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਭੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਮੁਕਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੧੦॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਤਰਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੀ ॥
gurmat layho tarahu sach taaree.
(O’ brother), follow the Guru’s teachings, remember God and swim across the worldly ocean of vices;
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰੋ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰੋ, ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ ਤਾਰੀ ਤਰੋ।
ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
aatam cheenahu ridai muraaree.
O’ brother, reflect carefully on your spiritual life and enshrine God in your heart.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਗਹੁ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖੋ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਓ।
ਜਮ ਕੇ ਫਾਹੇ ਕਾਟਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
jam kay faahay kaateh har jap akul niranjan paa-i-aa. ||11||
The noose of death is snapped by meditating on God’s Name, and one realizes the immaculate God who has no ancestry. ||11||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪ ਕੇ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ ਲੈ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਉਤਾਂਹ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪੰਚ ਸਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਭਾਈ ॥
gurmat panch sakhay gur bhaa-ee.
By following the Guru’s teachings, the five virtues (truth, contentment, patience, compassion and righteousness) become like one’s friends and brothers.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਿਆਂ ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਆਦਿਕ ਪੰਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਸਾਥੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਗੁਰ-ਭਾਈ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
gurmat agan nivaar samaa-ee.
The Guru’s teachings extinguish one’s fire of worldly desires and unite him with God’s Name.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
man mukh naam japahu jagjeevan rid antar alakh lakhaa-i-aa. ||12||
O’ brother, meditate on God’s Name with your tongue and mind; one who does that, comprehends the incomprehensible God in his heart. ||12||
ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ। (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ॥
gurmukh boojhai sabad pateejai.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings and understands the righteous way of life, becomes pleased with the Guru’s divine word;
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ ਪਤੀਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਿਸ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
ustat nindaa kis kee keejai.
(he realizes the same God pervading in all), then who should he praise and who should he slander?
ਇਹ ਫਿਰ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ਾਮਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਚੀਨਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਜਗਦੀਸਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
cheenahu aap japahu jagdeesar har jagannaath man bhaa-i-aa. ||13||
O’ brother, reflect on yourself, and meditate on God of the universe; one who does, the Master of the world becomes pleasing to his mind. ||13||
ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦੇ ਰਹੋ, ਤੇ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੋ। (ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਨਾਥ ਹਰੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਲੱਗ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਿ ਖੰਡਿ ਸੋ ਜਾਣਹੁ ॥
jo barahmand khand so jaanhu.
God who is pervading the entire universe, realize Him within your body.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਪਛਾਣੋ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣਹੁ ॥
gurmukh boojhhu sabad pachhaanhu.
Understand this mystery through the Guru’s teaching and realize God through the Guru’s word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਇਹ ਭੇਤ ਸਮਝੋ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣੋ।
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਭੋਗੇ ਭੋਗਣਹਾਰਾ ਰਹੈ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
ghat ghat bhogay bhoganhaaraa rahai ateet sabaa-i-aa. ||14||
By pervading each and every heart God, the enjoyer, is enjoying all the worldly pleasures, yet He remains detached from everything. ||14||
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੪॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੂਚਾ ॥
gurmat bolhu har jas soochaa.
O’ brother, utter praises of the immaculate God through the guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰੋ l
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਆਖੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਊਚਾ ॥
gurmat aakhee daykhhu oochaa.
Follow the Guru’s teachings and behold the majestic God with your eyes.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖੋ।
ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੩॥੨੦॥
sarvanee naam sunai har banee naanak har rang rangaa-i-aa. ||15||3||20||
O’ Nanak, one who listens to God’s Name and His praises with his ears, is imbued with God’s love. ||15||3||20||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ-ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥੩॥੨੦॥

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਰਹਰੁ ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ॥
kaam kroDh parhar par nindaa.
O’ brother, renounce lust, anger, and the habit of slandering others,
(ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇ ਪਰਾਈ ਨਿੰਦਿਆ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ,
ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਤਜਿ ਹੋਹੁ ਨਿਚਿੰਦਾ ॥
lab lobh taj hohu nichindaa.
renounce greed of eatables and worldly things and become carefree.
ਲੱਬ ਅਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਨਿਸਚਿੰਤ ਹੋ ਜਾ l
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕਾ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਤੋੜਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
bharam kaa sangal torh niraalaa har antar har ras paa-i-aa. ||1||
One who breaks the chain of doubts and remains detached, realizes God within himself and receives the elixir of God’s Name ||1||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਕਈ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਭਟਕਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੰਜੀਰ ਤੋੜ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਚਮਕਿ ਚੰਦਾਇਣੁ ਦੇਖੈ ॥
nis daaman ji-o chamak chandaa-in daykhai.
Just as one sees light at night with the flash of lightning,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਬਿਜਲੀ ਦੀ ਚਮਕ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹਨੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਚਾਨਣ ਵੇਖ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਪੇਖੈ ॥
ahinis jot nirantar paykhai.
similarly one (who has shed evils), always sees the divine light everywhere.
ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੂੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਦੇਖ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਨੰਦ ਰੂਪੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਸਰੂਪਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਦੇਖਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
aanand roop anoop saroopaa gur poorai daykhaa-i-aa. ||2||
This is how the perfect Guru has revealed that God of unparalleled beauty and embodiment of bliss. ||2||
ਉਹ ਆਨੰਦ-ਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ-ਸਰੂਪ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਵਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
satgur milhu aapay parabh taaray.
O’ brother, meet the true Guru and follow his teachings, God on His own would ferry you across the worldly ocean of vices
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਵੋ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਕਰੇਗਾ।
ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਗੈਣਾਰੇ ॥
sas ghar soor deepak gainaaray.
Just as the light of the Sun illuminates the Moon, similarly the lamp of divine knowledge will enlighten your heart.
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਚੰਦਰਮਾ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਸੂਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਦਿਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਂਵੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਰੂਪੀ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਦਿਵਾ ਬਲ ਜਾਏਗਾ।
ਦੇਖਿ ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਰਹਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸਭੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
daykh adisat rahhu liv laagee sabh taribhavan barahm sabaa-i-aa. ||3||
Beholding that invisible God within you, remain attuned to Him and then you would experience that God pervading in the entire universe. ||3||
(ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖੋ। ਫਿਰ ਤੇਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਥਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਿਸੇਗਾ ॥੩॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭਉ ਜਾਏ ॥
amrit ras paa-ay tarisnaa bha-o jaa-ay.
One who receives the ambrosial nectar of Naam, his worldly desires and fear of death goes away,
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਨਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
anbha-o pad paavai aap gavaa-ay.
he sheds his self-conceit and enters that state of spirituality where he receives the divine wisdom.
ਉਹ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਊਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
oochee padvee oocho oochaa nirmal sabad kamaa-i-aa. ||4||
He lives according to the Guru’s immaculate word, and attains the highest of the high, the supreme spiritual status. ||4||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਗੁਰ-ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਬੜੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉੱਚੇ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਦਰਜਾ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

O’ brother, beyond our comprehension is the Name of the invisible and limitless God.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਇੰਦ੍ਰਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ,
