ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨਾ ॥
sarab niranjan purakh sujaanaa.
In spite of residing in all, the all-wise God is free from the effect of materialism,
ਉਹ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਸਰੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ,
ਅਦਲੁ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
adal karay gur gi-aan samaanaa.
and He always administers true justice; one who is absorbed in the spiritual wisdom blessed by the Guru,
ਤੇ (ਹਰੇਕ ਗੱਲ ਵਿਚ) ਨਿਆਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੇ ਇਸ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਲੀਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੈ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਲੋਭੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੬॥
kaam kroDh lai gardan maaray ha-umai lobh chukaa-i-aa. ||6||
has eradicated his egotism and greed, and he totally eradicates his lust and anger. ||6||
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਤੇ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੬॥
ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
sachai thaan vasai nirankaaraa.
The formless God resides in an eternal place.
ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਅੰਦਰ ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਸਰੂਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ।
ਆਪਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
aap pachhaanai sabad veechaaraa.
He Himself reflects on and understands His command.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
sachai mahal nivaas nirantar aavan jaan chukaa-i-aa. ||7||
One who always remains focused on God’s Name, God ends his cycle of birth and death. ||7||
ਜਿਸ ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ (ਮਹਿਲ) ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਗੇੜ ਮੁਕਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਚਲੈ ਨ ਪਉਣੁ ਉਡਾਵੈ ॥
naa man chalai na pa-un udaavai.
The mind of that person, neither wanders, nor the wind of worldly passions carries him towards evil pursuits,
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਨਹੀਂ ਭਟਕਦਾ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਥਾਂ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੌੜਾਈ ਫਿਰਦੀ।
ਜੋਗੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਵੈ ॥
jogee sabad anaahad vaavai.
who remains so focused on God as if he is continuously playing the melody of the divine word of His praises.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰ) ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ (ਦਾ ਵਾਜਾ) ਵਜਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਪੰਚ ਸਬਦ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ਵਾਇ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥੮॥
panch sabad jhunkaar niraalam parabh aapay vaa-ay sunaa-i-aa. ||8||
That person hears within himself a sweet melody as if God Himself is playing the five musical instruments without any help. ||8||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ, ਮਾਨੋ, ਇਕ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਇਕ-ਰਸ ਰਾਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੰਜ ਕਿਸਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਵਜਾਣ ਨਾਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਰਾਗ ਨੂੰ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਸਾਜ਼ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਦੀ ਲੋੜ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ। ਇਹ ਰਾਗ (ਅੰਦਰ-ਵੱਸਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਵਜਾ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੮॥
ਭਉ ਬੈਰਾਗਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਤਾ ॥
bha-o bairaagaa sahj samaataa.
The revered fear of God wells up within that person and he remains merged in a state of celestial poise.
ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਅਨਹਦਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
ha-umai ti-aagee anhad raataa.
Renouncing egotism, he remains imbued with the love of eternal God.
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਾਰਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੯॥
anjan saar niranjan jaanai sarab niranjan raa-i-aa. ||9||
Embellishing his eyes with divine wisdom, he realizes that God, the immaculate sovereign king, who saves His devotees from the effects of materialism. ||9||
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਸੁਰਮਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਰਾਜਨ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਸਰਨ ਪਏ) ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੯॥
ਦੁਖ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ॥
dukh bhai bhanjan parabh abhinaasee.
The eternal God is the destroyer of sorrows and fear of the human beings.
ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਰੋਗ ਕਟੇ ਕਾਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
rog katay kaatee jam faasee.
God cures the afflictions of the beings, and cuts away the noose of death.
ਉਹ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੋਗ ਕੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥
naanak har parabh so bha-o bhanjan gur mili-ai har parabh paa-i-aa. ||10||
O’ Nanak, that God who is the destroyer of fear, is realized only by meeting the Guru and following his teachings. ||10||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਹਰੀ, ਉਹ ਭਉ-ਭੰਜਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਵੇ ॥੧੦॥
ਕਾਲੈ ਕਵਲੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
kaalai kaval niranjan jaanai.
One who realizes the immaculate God, sheds the fear of death as if he has devoured death like a morsel of food.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ-ਰਹਿਤ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਗਿਰਾਹੀ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਮੁਕਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ),
ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਮੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
boojhai karam so sabad pachhaanai.
He understands the grace of God and recognizes the divine word of His praises,
ਉਹ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਚੋਜੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥
aapay jaanai aap pachhaanai sabh tis kaa choj sabaa-i-aa. ||11||
he is convinced that God is omniscient and this entire creation is His play. ||11||
(ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ-ਤਮਾਸ਼ਾ ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਰਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੧੧॥
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥
aapay saahu aapay vanjaaraa.
God Himself is the banker and He Himself (by pervading in all) is the trader of Naam.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਰਾਸ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਸ਼ਾਹੂਕਾਰ ਹੈ, ਆਪ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ) ਵਪਾਰੀ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
aapay parkhay parkhanhaaraa.
God Himself appraises the trade (of Naam) conducted by the mortals,
(ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ-ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਣਜ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਆਪੇ ਕਸਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥
aapay kas kasvatee laa-ay aapay keemat paa-i-aa. ||12||
God Himself evaluates their merchandise of Naam on the touchstone of righteousness and estimates its worth. ||12||
ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਵਣਜ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਸਵੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਘਸਾ ਕੇ ਪਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਵਣਜ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥
ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
aap da-i-aal da-i-aa parabh Dhaaree.
One upon whom the merciful God bestows mercy,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਤੇ ਦਇਆ-ਦੇ-ਘਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮੇਹਰ ਕੀਤੀ,
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਨਵਾਰੀ ॥
ghat ghat rav rahi-aa banvaaree.
is convinced that God pervades each and every heart.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੈ l
ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਵਸੈ ਨਿਹਕੇਵਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥
purakh ateet vasai nihkayval gur purkhai purakh milaa-i-aa. ||13||
In spite of dwelling in all, the immaculate God remains unaffected by Maya; the true Guru has united that person with the all-pervading God. ||13||
ਹਰੇਕ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ-ਸਰੂਪ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ ਉਹ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੧੩॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
parabh daanaa beenaa garab gavaa-ay.
God is wise and all-knowing; He dispels the ego of that person, upon whom He bestows mercy,
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕੰਮ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਕਰੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਮਿਟਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਦੂਜਾ ਮੇਟੈ ਏਕੁ ਦਿਖਾਏ ॥
doojaa maytai ayk dikhaa-ay.
eradicating his love for duality, He reveals Himself to That person
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਦਵੈਤ-ਪਾਭ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਆਸਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਜੋਨੀ ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥
aasaa maahi niraalam jonee akul niranjan gaa-i-aa. ||14||
In spite of living amongst the worldly desires, he remains detached, and keeps singing praises of that immaculate God who has no ancestry. ||14||
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਆਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਚਰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਭੀ) ਆਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਬੇ-ਮੁਥਾਜ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ॥੧੪॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
ha-umai mayt sabad sukh ho-ee.
Inner peace is attained by eradicating egotism through the Guru’s divine word.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸੋਈ ॥
aap veechaaray gi-aanee so-ee.
He alone is spiritually wise, who contemplates his own self.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪੜਤਾਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਗਿਆਨ-ਵਾਨ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੨॥੧੯॥
naanak har jas har gun laahaa satsangat sach fal paa-i-aa. ||15||2||19||
O’ Nanak, singing God’s praises and reflecting on His virtues is the real reward in life, this everlasting fruit is received in the holy congregation. ||15||2||19||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਨੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਣੇ-(ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਹੀ ਅਸਲ) ਖੱਟੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇਹ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਫਲ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧੫॥੨॥੧੯॥

Raag Maaroo, First Guru:
ਸਚੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਸਚੈ ਘਰਿ ਰਹਣਾ ॥
sach kahhu sachai ghar rahnaa.
O, brother, lovingly utter the virtues of the eternal God, only then you will be able to live in His presence;
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ, ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਕਰ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ;
ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat marahu bhavjal jag tarnaa.
completely eradicate your ego, as if you have died to the world while living in it, only then you will be able to swim across the world ocean of vices.
ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮਰ ਕੇ, ਤੂੰ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।
ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
gur bohith gur bayrhee tulhaa man har jap paar langhaa-i-aa. ||1||
O’ mind, the Guru is like a ship, a boat or a raft, meditate on God’s Name; one who has done so, the Guru has ferried him across the world ocean of vices. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਨ! (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਣ ਲਈ) ਗੁਰੂ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਬੇੜੀ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹੈ, ਹਰਿ-ਨਾਮ ਜਪ, (ਜਿਸ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਜਪਿਆ ਹੈ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੋਭ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa lobh binaasan.
God’s Name is the destroyer of ego, sense of attachment, and greed.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਉ ਦਰ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਸਨੁ ॥
na-o dar muktay dasvai aasan.
The nine gates (sensory organs) of the body are liberated from evils by meditating on God’s Name, and the mind settles down in the tenth gate (higher spiritual status).
(ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੌ ਗੋਲਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਮਿਲੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਸੁਰਤ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦੁਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਦਸਵੇਂ ਦੁਆਰ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬੰਧ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਊਪਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
oopar parai parai aprampar jin aapay aap upaa-i-aa. ||2||
God who is above all, the farthest of the far, infinite and is self revealed. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ (ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਪਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਪਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਲੇਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੀਐ ॥
gurmat layvhu har liv taree-ai.
O’ brother, follow the Guru’s teachings and focus your mind on God; this is how we swim across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ,ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰੋ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਕਲੁ ਗਾਇ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਡਰੀਐ ॥
akal gaa-ay jam tay ki-aa daree-ai.
If one sings the praises of the eternal God, then why should he be afraid of death?
ਜਦ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਅਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਮੌਤ ਤੋਂ ਕਿਉਂ ਡਰੇ?
ਜਤ ਜਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੁਮ ਹੀ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੁਤੀਆ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
jat jat daykh-a-u tat tat tum hee avar na dutee-aa gaa-i-aa. ||3||
O’ God, wherever I look, You are there; I do not sing praises of any other. ||3||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਜਿਧਰ ਜਿਧਰ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਉਧਰ ਉਧਰ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਤੂੰ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਸਚੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
sach har naam sach hai sarnaa.
Everlasting is God’s Name and everlasting is His refuge.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ-ਪਰਨਾ ਭੀ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਚੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਿਤੈ ਲਗਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
sach gur sabad jitai lag tarnaa.
Eternal is the Guru’s word, following it we swim across the world-ocean of vices.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਵਸੀਲਾ ਹੈ), ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਕਥੁ ਕਥੈ ਦੇਖੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਜੋਨੀ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
akath kathai daykhai aprampar fun garabh na jonee jaa-i-aa. ||4||
One who utters the praises of the indescribable God, experiences that limitless God and then does not go through the reincarnations. ||4||
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਕਥ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਗਰਭ-ਜੋਨਿ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ॥੪॥
ਸਚ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
sach bin sat santokh na paavai.
Nobody can ever acquire such virtues as truthful living and contentment without remembering God with adoration.
ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ (ਦਾ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
bin gur mukat na aavai jaavai.
Liberation from the vices cannot be attained without following the Guru’s teachings, and one remains in the cycle of birth and death.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ, ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੇ ਗੇੜ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
mool mantar har naam rasaa-in kaho naanak pooraa paa-i-aa. ||5||
O’ Nanak, utter God’s Name which is the root of all mantras and the source of all elixirs; one who does, realizes the perfect God. ||5||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਰਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ। ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
