ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੮॥੧॥
naanak daasan daas kahat hai ham daasan kay panihaaray. ||8||1||
O’ Nanak, the servant of Your devotees begs that make him their most humble servant like their water-carrier. ||8||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਆਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਾਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖ ॥੮॥੧॥

Raag Nat, Fourth Guru:
ਰਾਮ ਹਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ॥
raam ham paathar nirgunee-aaray.
O’ my God, we are unvirtuous and stone-hearted.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਨਿਰਦਈ ਹਾਂ, ਗੁਣਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸੱਖਣੇ ਹਾਂ।
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਹਮ ਪਾਹਨ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kirpaa kirpaa kar guroo milaa-ay ham paahan sabad gur taaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The merciful God has showered mercy and has united me with the Guru and through the Guru’s word, this stone-hearted is carried across the world-ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
ਕਿਰਪਾਲੂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੇ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਰਾਹੀਂ,ਮੈਂ ਪੱਥਰ ਪਾਰ ਉੱਤਰ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ਅਤਿ ਮੀਠਾ ਮੈਲਾਗਰੁ ਮਲਗਾਰੇ ॥
satgur naam drirh-aa-ay at meethaa mailaagar malgaaray.
The true Guru has implanted within me the exceedingly sweet God’s Name which is like the most fragrant sandalwood.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਰਮ ਮਿੱਠੜਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸੀਤਲ ਤੇ ਸੁਗੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਵਜੀ ਹੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਸਕੀ ਮੁਸਕ ਗੰਧਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
naamai surat vajee hai dah dis har muskee musak ganDhaaray. ||1||
By virtue of God’s Name, this consciousness has awakened in me that the fragrance of God’s presence is spreading everywhere in the world. ||1||
ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਹਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀ ਪਸਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਤੇਰੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਥਾ ਕਥਾ ਹੈ ਮੀਠੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਨੀਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
tayree nirgun kathaa kathaa hai meethee gur neekay bachan samaaray.
Sweet is Your discourse which is unaffected by the love of Maya; Your praises are enshrined in one’s heart through the Guru’s immaculate divine words.
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈ ਸਕਦਾ। ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ) ਸੋਹਣੇ ਬਚਨ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗਾਵਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
gaavat gaavat har gun gaa-ay gun gaavat gur nistaaray. ||2||
Those who constantly sing God’s Praises, the Guru carried them across the world ocean of vices. ||2||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੇ, ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨॥
ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸੰਕ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
bibayk guroo guroo samadrasee tis milee-ai sank utaaray.
The Guru is wise and impartially looks upon all alike; we should surrender to him without any doubts and skepticism.
ਗੁਰੂ ਚੰਗੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਪੁੰਨ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਵੇਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਸ਼ੰਕੇ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
satgur mili-ai param pad paa-i-aa ha-o satgur kai balihaaray. ||3||
By meeting and following the teachings of the true Guru we acquire supreme spiritual status, and for that I am dedicated to the true Guru. ||3||
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਚੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹਾਂ ॥੩॥
ਪਾਖੰਡ ਪਾਖੰਡ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮੇ ਲੋਭੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਜਗਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੇ ॥
pakhand pakhand kar kar bharmay lobh pakhand jag buri-aaray.
By practicing hypocrisy and deception, people wander around in confusion; greed and hypocrisy are the worst evils in this world.
(ਮਾਇਆ ਆਦਿਕ ਬਟੋਰਨ ਲਈ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਦਿਖਾਵੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਜੀਵ) ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਇਹ (ਧਾਰਮਿਕ) ਵਿਖਾਵਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਬੜੇ ਭੈੜੇ (ਵੈਰੀ) ਹਨ।
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਖੜਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
halat palat dukh-daa-ee hoveh jamkaal kharhaa sir maaray. ||4||
In this world and the next, they are miserable; the fear of death hovers over their heads and they keep deteriorating spiritually. ||4||
ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ (ਇਹ ਸਦਾ) ਦੁਖਦਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ) ਜਮਕਾਲ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੇ) ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ ਮਾਰੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਉਗਵੈ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਆਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਬਿਸਥਾਰੇ ॥
ugvai dinas aal jaal samHaalai bikh maa-i-aa kay bisthaaray.
When the day rises, (instead of remembering God), one gets busy with the worldly affairs which truly are the display of May.
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਦਿਨ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸੇ ਵੇਲੇ ਲੋਭ-ਵਸ ਜੀਵ) ਘਰ ਦੇ ਧੰਧੇ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਰੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ;
ਆਈ ਰੈਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭੀ ਦੁਖ ਸਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
aa-ee rain bha-i-aa supnantar bikh supnai bhee dukh saaray. ||5||
When the night falls, then even in dreams, one suffers the pain of worldly problems. ||5||
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਰਾਤ ਆ ਗਈ (ਤਦੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਦਿਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਧੰਧਿਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ) ਸੁਪਨਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਗ਼ਲਤਾਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ, ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੰਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਕਲਰੁ ਖੇਤੁ ਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ਸਭ ਕੂੜੈ ਕੇ ਖਲਵਾਰੇ ॥
kalar khayt lai koorh jamaa-i-aa sabh koorhai kay khalvaaray.
The mind of (the self-conceited person is like a barren field, in which that person sows the seeds of false hood and gathers nothing but the stack of falsehood.
ਬੰਜਰ ਪੈਲੀ ਲੈ ਕੇ, ਬੰਦਾ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਝੂਠ ਬੀਜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਖਲਵਾੜੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਝੂਠ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ।
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰ ਸਭਿ ਭੂਖ ਭੁਖਾਨੇ ਦਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੇ ॥੬॥
saakat nar sabh bhookh bhukhaanay dar thaadhay jam jandaaray. ||6||
The faithless cynics remain craving for worldly desires and are at the mercy of the cruel demon of death. ||6||
(ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਟਾ ਇਹ ਨਿਕਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਸਾਕਤ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ, ਬਲੀ ਜਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਖਲੋਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੬॥
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਜੁ ਚੜਿਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
manmukh karaj charhi-aa bikh bhaaree utrai sabad veechaaray.
The self-willed person has accumulated a tremendous debt of sins; this debt can be removed only by contemplating the Guru’s divine word.
ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਇਆਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਉਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਤਨੇ ਕਰਜ ਕਰਜ ਕੇ ਮੰਗੀਏ ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਗਿ ਲਗਿ ਵਾਰੇ ॥੭॥
jitnay karaj karaj kay mangee-ay kar sayvak pag lag vaaray. ||7||
God makes all the creditors (the demons of death) as the servants of the Guru’s follower and makes them serve him with humility. ||7||
ਜਿੰਨੇ ਭੀ ਕਰਜ਼ਾ ਮੰਗਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ; ਓਨਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ॥੭॥
ਜਗੰਨਾਥ ਸਭਿ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਉਪਾਏ ਨਕਿ ਖੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਨਥਹਾਰੇ ॥
jagannaath sabh jantar upaa-ay nak kheenee sabh nathhaaray.
The Master of the universe has created all the creatures and has kept them under His control just as a master of a herd keeps his animals under his control, with the help of a string through their noses.
ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, ਨੱਕੋ-ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ (ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਵਾਂਗ) ਸਭ ਉਸੇ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਖਿੰਚੈ ਤਿਵ ਚਲੀਐ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak parabh khinchai tiv chalee-ai ji-o bhaavai raam pi-aaray. ||8||2||
O’ Nanak, as God wishes and pulls the strings, we have to move accordingly, and do what pleases our beloved God. ||8||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੱਥ) ਖਿੱਚਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਤੁਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੮॥੨॥

Raag Nat, Fourth Guru:
ਰਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰਿ ਨਾਵਾਰੇ ॥
raam har amrit sar naavaaray.
O’ God, one who you bathes his mind in the ambrosial Nectar of Naam,
ਹੇ ਰਾਮ! ਹੇ ਹਰੀ! (ਜਿਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ-ਜਲ ਦੇ ਸਰ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਹੈ ਨੀਕੋ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਲਮਲ ਪਾਪ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satgur gi-aan majan hai neeko mil kalmal paap utaaray. ||1|| rahaa-o.
on meeting with the Guru, he sheds off all his sins and vices; the spiritual wisdom of the true Guru is the most excellent cleansing bath. ||1||Pause||
(ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਾਪ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਲਾਹ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ) ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਹੀ ਗੁਰੂ (-ਸਰੋਵਰ) ਵਿਚ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕਾ ਗੁਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਪੜਿ ਸੂਆ ਗਨਕ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥
sangat kaa gun bahut aDhikaa-ee parh soo-aa ganak uDhaaray.
The virtues of the Holy Congregation are so very great, even the prostitute Ganika was saved from vices while teaching the parrot to recite God’s Name.
ਨੇਕ ਸੁਹਬਤ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ। ਤੋਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਚਾਰਨ ਪੜਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਰ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
ਪਰਸ ਨਪਰਸ ਭਏ ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਕਉ ਲੈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਰੇ ॥੧॥
paras napras bha-ay kubijaa ka-o lai baikunth siDhaaray. ||1||
Similarly God Krishna, blessed the hunchback Kubija by his touch and took her along to the heaven (she realized God). ||1||
ਕੁਬਿਜਾ ਨੂੰ (ਸ੍ਰੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਛੋਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ, (ਉਹ ਛੋਹ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਲੈ ਪਹੁੰਚੀ ॥੧॥
ਅਜਾਮਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਬੋਲਾਰੇ ॥
ajaamal pareet putar parat keenee kar naaraa-in bolaaray.
Ajamall had great affection for his son Naaraayan; calling his name often, he got imbued with the love of God Himself.
ਅਜਾਮਲ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ (ਨਾਰਾਇਣ) ਨਾਲ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ (ਜਗਤ-ਪ੍ਰਸਿਧ ਹੈ। ਅਜਾਮਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ) ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਲਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ (ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਆਖਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਭੀ ਬਣ ਗਈ)।
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਾਵਨੀ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਿਦਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
mayray thaakur kai man bhaa-ay bhaavnee jamkankar maar bidaaray. ||2||
Ajamall’s loving devotion pleased my Master-God, who struck down and drove away the messengers of death. ||2||
ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਅਜਾਮਲ ਦੀ ਉਹ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਸੰਦ ਆ ਗਈ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਜਮਦੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ (ਅਜਾਮਲ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ) ਭਜਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨॥
ਮਾਨੁਖੁ ਕਥੈ ਕਥਿ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਜੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਸੋ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
maanukh kathai kath lok sunaavai jo bolai so na beechaaray.
But the one who merely talks and makes others listen, does not benefit from it if he himself does not act upon what he preaches.
ਪਰ, ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰਾ ਜ਼ਬਾਨੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਰਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ); ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ।
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਦਿੜਤਾ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
satsangat milai ta dirh-taa aavai har raam naam nistaaray. ||3||
When one joins holy congregation, develops true faith, then the Guru blesses him with God’s Name which carries him across the worldly ocean of vices. ||3||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸਰਧਾ ਬੱਝਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਤਬ ਲਗਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਸਮਾਰੇ ॥
jab lag jee-o pind hai saabat tab lag kichh na samaaray.
As long as soul and body are together, the faithless cynic does not remember God at all.
ਜਦੋਂ ਤਕ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ (ਦਾ ਮੇਲ) ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦੋਂ ਤਕ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਟੁੱਟਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਨੂੰ) ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਸਾਂਦਾ,
ਜਬ ਘਰ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਆਗਿ ਲਗਾਨੀ ਕਢਿ ਕੂਪੁ ਕਢੈ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੪॥
jab ghar mandar aag lagaanee kadh koop kadhai panihaaray. ||4||
Only when one realizes that death is imminent, he runs to temples or calls on gods to save; but it is like digging a well when his house catches fire. ||4||
ਇਸ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਮਝੋ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਅੱਗ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਖੂਹ ਪੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾਣ ਲਈ) ॥੪॥
ਸਾਕਤ ਸਿਉ ਮਨ ਮੇਲੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥
saakat si-o man mayl na karee-ahu jin har har naam bisaaray.
O’ my mind, never associate with a faithless cynic who has forsaken Naam.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਉੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਸਾਕਤ ਹੈ, ਉਸ) ਸਾਕਤ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਸਾਂਝ ਨਾਹ ਪਾਣੀ,
ਸਾਕਤ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਛੂਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਸੀਐ ਤਜਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਰੈ ਪਰਾਰੇ ॥੫॥
saakat bachan bichhoo-aa ji-o dasee-ai taj saakat parai paraaray. ||5||
One should stay far away from a faithless cynic because his words sting like a scorpion. ||5||
ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਾਕਤ ਦੇ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਉਂ ਡੰਗਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸੱਪ-ਠੂਹੇਂ ਦੇ ਡੰਗ ਨਾਲ। ਸਾਕਤ (ਦਾ ਸੰਗ) ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਹੀ ਹੋਰ ਪਰੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
