ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੇ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
bin sabdai sabh doojai laagay daykhhu ridai beechaar.
By reflecting in your heart, you may see for yourself that without following the Guru’s word, all are attached to duality (things other than God).
ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲਵੋ , ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਹੋਰ (ਰੁਝੇਵੇਂ) ਵਿਚ ਲੱਗੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡੇ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩੪॥
naanak vaday say vadbhaagee jinee sach rakhi-aa ur Dhaar. ||34||
O’ Nanak, blessed and very fortunate are those who have kept God enshrined in their hearts. ||34||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਡੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੩੪॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਲਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
gurmukh ratan lahai liv laa-ay.
The Guru’s follower receives the jewel-like Naam by remaining attuned to God.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਰਤਨ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਖੈ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
gurmukh parkhai ratan subhaa-ay.
The Guru’s follower intuitively recognizes the worth of the jewel-like Naam.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਚਲਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੁਭਾਵਿਕ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ-ਰਤਨ ਦੀ ਕਦਰ ਜਾਣ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
gurmukh saachee kaar kamaa-ay.
The Guru’s follower lives a truthful living (by doing righteous deeds).
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੱਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
gurmukh saachay man patee-aa-ay.
A Guru’s follower’s mind remains pleased with the eternal God.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਗਿਝਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh alakh lakhaa-ay tis bhaavai.
When it pleases God, a Guru’s follower comprehends the virtues of the incomprehensible God.
(ਜਦੋਂ) ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਉਸ ਅਲੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ॥੩੫॥
naanak gurmukh chot na khaavai. ||35||
O’ Nanak, a Guru’s follower does not get struck by the vices.||35||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਮਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ ॥੩੫॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
gurmukh naam daan isnaan.
The Guru’s follower possesses the virtues of remembering God, giving in charity and purity of character.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹਰੀ ਸਿਮਰਨ,ਦਾਨ ਪੁੰਨ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਖਸੀ ਪਵਿੱਤਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਉਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
gurmukh laagai sahj Dhi-aan.
The Guru’s follower remains focused on God.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੱਸੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਿਰਤੀ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਦਰ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
gurmukh paavai dargeh maan.
A Guru’s follower obtains honor in God’s presence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਰਧਾਨੁ ॥
gurmukh bha-o bhanjan parDhaan.
A Guru’s follower realizes God, the destroyer of fear and Master of all.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਡਰ-ਸਹਿਮ ਨਾਸ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
gurmukh karnee kaar karaa-ay.
A Guru’s follower inspires others to follow the Guru’s teachings, the only deed worth doing.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਭੀ ਇਹੀ, ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਕਰਨ-ਜੋਗ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੩੬॥
naanak gurmukh mayl milaa-ay. ||36||
O’ Nanak, this is how the Guru’s follower unites them with God. ||36||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩੬॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਬੇਦ ॥
gurmukh saastar simrit bayd.
The essence of the Shastras, Simrities, and Vedas for a Guru’s follower is to live by the Guru’s teachings.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨਾ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲਈ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ)।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਭੇਦ ॥
gurmukh paavai ghat ghat bhayd.
A Guru’s follower understands this secret that God resides in every heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹਰੇਕ ਘਟ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ (ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕਤਾ ਦਾ) ਭੇਤ ਸਮਝ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵੈਰ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh vair viroDh gavaavai.
A Guru’s follower eliminates all enmity or hostility.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ) ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਗਲੀ ਗਣਤ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
gurmukh saglee ganat mitaavai.
The Guru’s follower writes off all the accounts of hostilities done by others.
ਇਸ ਵੈਰ-ਵਿਰੋਧ ਦਾ ਸਾਰਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੀ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਸੋਚ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਣ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਧੀਕੀ ਕੀਤੀ)।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
gurmukh raam naam rang raataa.
The Guru’s follower remains imbued with the love of God’s Name.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੩੭॥
naanak gurmukh khasam pachhaataa. ||37||
O’ Nanak, this way the Guru’s follower has recognized the Master-God. ||37||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਖਸਮ -ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੩੭॥
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur bharmai aavai jaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one wanders in Maya (worldly riches and power) and keeps going through the cycle of birth and death.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਆਉਣ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ) ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਮਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਘਾਲ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥
bin gur ghaal na pav-ee thaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one’s effort does not succeed.
ਗੁਰ-ਸਰਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਹਨਤ ਕਬੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ “ਹਉ” ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
bin gur manoo-aa at dolaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one’s mind is totally unsteady.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਇਹ ਚੰਚਲ ਮਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਿੱਕੋਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
bin gur taripat nahee bikh khaa-ay.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one is never satisfied and keeps indulging in worldly relishes, the poison for spiritual life.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤੇ ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਸੀਅਰੁ ਡਸੈ ਮਰਿ ਵਾਟ ॥
bin gur bisee-ar dasai mar vaat.
Without following the Guru’s teachings, one keeps getting stung by the snake-like worldly attachments and he spiritually dies without completing life’s journey.
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ-ਰੂਪ) ਸੱਪ ਡੰਗ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਦੇ) ਅੱਧ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤੇ) ਮਰੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਾਟੇ ਘਾਟ ॥੩੮॥
naanak gur bin ghaatay ghaat. ||38||
O’ Nanak, without the Guru, one suffers absolute loss in spiritual life. ||38||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਘਾਟਾ ਹੀ ਘਾਟਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩੮॥
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥
jis gur milai tis paar utaarai.
One whom the Guru meets, the Guru ferries him across the world-ocean of vices,
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਉਹ “ਦੁਤਰ ਸਾਗਰ” ਤੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅਵਗਣ ਮੇਟੈ ਗੁਣਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥
avgan maytai gun nistaarai.
removes his sins and saves him from vices by instilling virtues in him.
ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਮਿਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮਹਾ ਸੁਖ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
mukat mahaa sukh gur sabad beechaar.
By pondering over the Guru’s word, one is blessed with the supreme bliss of freedom (from the bonds of Maya).
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ) ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਦਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਸੁਖ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਰਿ ॥
gurmukh kaday na aavai haar.
The Guru’s follower never comes back after losing the game of life.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ (ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਦੇ) ਹਾਰ ਕੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ।
ਤਨੁ ਹਟੜੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥
tan hatrhee ih man vanjaaraa.
For a Guru’s follower, this body is like a shop and the mind is like a trader.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਆਪਣੇ) ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਬਣਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਚੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥੩੯॥
naanak sehjay sach vaapaaraa. ||39||
O’ Naank, this is where he intuitively deals in God’s Name. ||39||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩੯॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਾਂਧਿਓ ਸੇਤੁ ਬਿਧਾਤੈ ॥
gurmukh baaNDhi-o sayt biDhaatai.
The Gurmukh is like a bridge built by the creator to go over the worldly ocean of vices like the bridge of stones built by lord Rama across the sea.
ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ-ਰੂਪ ਪੁਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਤਾ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ਰਾਮਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੀਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਪੁਲ ਬੱਧਾ ਸੀ)।
ਲੰਕਾ ਲੂਟੀ ਦੈਤ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥
lankaa lootee dait santaapai.
Just as lord Rama plundered Lanka, and punished the demons, similarly the Guru freed the devotee from the vices.
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਰਾਮਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ) ਲੰਕਾ ਲੁੱਟੀ ਤੇ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਮਾਰੇ, (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਵਿਚ ਪਏ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਛੁਡਾ ਲਿਆ
ਰਾਮਚੰਦਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ਅਹਿ ਰਾਵਣੁ ॥
raamchand maari-o ah raavan.
Just as lord Ram Chand killed the arrogant king Raavan, similarly the Guru’s follower eradicated his arrogance.
ਰਾਮਚੰਦ੍ਰ (ਜੀ) ਨੇ ਰਾਵਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੇ ਮਨ-ਸੱਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ;
ਭੇਦੁ ਬਭੀਖਣ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਚਾਇਣੁ ॥
bhayd babheekhan gurmukh parchaa-in.
Just as the secret told by Bhabhikhan (Ravan brother) proved useful in killing Ravana, similarly the Guru’s teachings proved useful for killing ego.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ (ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਉਂ ਕੰਮ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਬਭੀਖਣ ਦਾ ਭੇਤ ਦੱਸਣਾ (ਰਾਵਣ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੰਮ ਆਇਆ)।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਇਰਿ ਪਾਹਣ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
gurmukh saa-ir paahan taaray.
Just as lord Ram Chander made the stones float in the ocean,
(ਰਾਮਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਪੁਲ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਤਾਰੇ)
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਤੇਤੀਸ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥੪੦॥
gurmukh kot taytees uDhaaray. ||40||
similarly the Guru’s follower has saved millions of beings through Naam.||40||
ਇਸੇ ਤਰਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਤੇਤੀ ਕਰੋੜ (ਭਾਵ, ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵ) ਤਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ ॥੪੦॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
gurmukh chookai aavan jaan.
One who follows the Guru’s teachings, his cycle of birth and death ends.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦਾ ਚੱਕਰ ਮੁੱਕ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
gurmukh dargeh paavai maan.
The Guru’s follower receives honor in God’s presence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਆਦਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਖਰੇ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
gurmukh khotay kharay pachhaan.
The Guru’s follower knows the difference between the good and the bad deeds.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਖੋਟੇ ਤੇ ਖਰੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੇਤੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
gurmukh laagai sahj Dhi-aan.
The Guru’s follower remains focused on God.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
gurmukh dargeh sifat samaa-ay.
Through singing praise of God, the Guru’s follower is accepted in His presence.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੪੧॥
naanak gurmukh banDh na paa-ay. ||41||
O’ Nanak, a Guru’s follower faces no obstacle in his spiritual life. ||41||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ) ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ (ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਰੋਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ॥੪੧॥
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪਾਏ ॥
gurmukh naam niranjan paa-ay.
The Guru’s follower is blessed with the Name of the immaculate God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
gurmukh ha-umai sabad jalaa-ay.
Through the Guru’s word, a Guru’s follower burns away his ego.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਾੜ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥
gurmukh saachay kay gun gaa-ay.
A Guru’s follower always sings praises of the eternal God.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸੱਚੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
gurmukh saachai rahai samaa-ay.
The Guru’s follower always remains absorbed in the eternal God.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਹੋਇ ॥
gurmukh saach naam pat ootam ho-ay.
For remaining absorbed in the eternal Name, the Guru’s follower is highly honored.
ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਉੱਚੀ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਗਲ ਭਵਣ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੪੨॥
naanak gurmukh sagal bhavan kee sojhee ho-ay. ||42||
O’ Nanak, a Guru’s follower achieves the knowledge of all the worlds (he realizes that God pervades in the entire universe) ||42||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਸਮਝ ਆ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੀ ਭਵਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ) ॥੪੨॥
ਕਵਣ ਮੂਲੁ ਕਵਣ ਮਤਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥
kavan mool kavan mat vaylaa.
Yogies ask, what is the source of life, and what is the right time to receive divine wisdom?
(ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ:)-(ਜੀਵਨ ਦਾ) ਕੀਹ ਮੂਲ ਹੈ? ਕੇਹੜੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲੈਣ ਦਾ (ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਾ) ਸਮਾ ਹੈ?
ਤੇਰਾ ਕਵਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਤੂ ਚੇਲਾ ॥
tayraa kavan guroo jis kaa too chaylaa.
Who is your guru? Whose disciple are you?
ਤੇਰਾ ਕੌਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਚੇਲਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਕਵਣ ਕਥਾ ਲੇ ਰਹਹੁ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ॥
kavan kathaa lay rahhu niraalay.
What is that teaching by which you remain detached from the world?
ਕੇਹੜੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਾਲ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਬਾਲੇ ॥
bolai naanak sunhu tum baalay.
Nanak says, the Yogis spoke like this, listen O’ young man Nanak,
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ-) ਹੇ ਬਾਲਕ (ਨਾਨਕ!) ਸੁਣ,
ਏਸੁ ਕਥਾ ਕਾ ਦੇਇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
ays kathaa kaa day-ay beechaar.
