ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਪੰਚਪਦੇ ॥

Raag Aasaa, Panch-Padas, Fifth Guru:
ਪ੍ਰਥਮੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਨੀਕੀ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
parathmay tayree neekee jaat.
O’ human being, firstly you belong to a life of higher status than other species.
ਵੇਖ) ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ (ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਵਾਲੀ) ਚੰਗੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਹੈ;
ਦੁਤੀਆ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਨੀਐ ਪਾਂਤਿ ॥
dutee-aa tayree manee-ai paaNt.
Secondly, you are honored in the society.
ਦੂਜੇ, ਤੇਰੀ ਖ਼ਾਨਦਾਨੀ ਭੀ ਮੰਨੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
taritee-aa tayraa sundar thaan.
Thirdly, your body in which you live is beautiful.
ਤੀਜੇ, ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਅਸਥਾਨ (ਤੇਰਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ) ਸਰੀਰ ਹੈ,
ਬਿਗੜ ਰੂਪੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
bigarh roop man meh abhimaan. ||1||
But your shape is deformed because there is arrogance in your mind. ||1||
ਪਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਰੂਪ ਕੋਝਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਤੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਸੋਹਨੀ ਸਰੂਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ॥
sohnee saroop sujaan bichkhan.
You are beautiful, attractive, wise and clever.
ਤੂੰ (ਵੇਖਣ ਨੂੰ) ਸੋਹਣੀ ਹੈਂ, ਰੂਪ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈਂ, ਸਿਆਣੀ ਹੈਂ, ਚਤੁਰ ਹੈਂ।
ਅਤਿ ਗਰਬੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਫਾਕੀ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
at garbai mohi faakee tooN. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But you are trapped in ego and worldly attachment. ||1||pause||
ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਬੜੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੀ ਪਈ ਹੈਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਅਤਿ ਸੂਚੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਾਕਸਾਲ ॥
at soochee tayree paaksaal.
Your kitchen is immaculate (compared to eating places of other species).
ਤੇਰੀ ਬੜੀ ਸੁੱਚੀ (ਸੁਥਰੀ) ਰਸੋਈ ਹੈ
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਪੂਜਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਾਲ ॥
kar isnaan poojaa tilak laal.
You bathe, worship and apply ritualistic the crimson mark to your forehead;
ਤੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ ਮੱਥੇ ਉਤੇ ਲਾਲ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ।
ਗਲੀ ਗਰਬਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਗੋਵਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ॥
galee garbeh mukh goveh gi-aan.
through talk you show off your arrogance while uttering wise words.
ਮੂੰਹ ਨਾਲ ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ। ਤੂੰ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਭੀ ਜਤਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈਂ
ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਖੋਈ ਲੋਭਿ ਸੁਆਨ ॥੨॥
sabh biDh kho-ee lobh su-aan. ||2||
But, the dog-like greed has ruined you in every way. ||2||
ਪਰ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਨੇ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਛੱਡਿਆ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਕਾਪਰ ਪਹਿਰਹਿ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਭੋਗ ॥
kaapar pahirahi bhogeh bhog.
You wear beautiful clothes and enjoy worldly pleasures;
ਤੂੰ (ਸੋਹਣੇ) ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਦੀ ਹੈਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ) ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਦੀ ਹੈਂ,
ਆਚਾਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਗ ॥
aachaar karahi sobhaa meh log.
you practice good conduct to impress people;
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਭਾ ਖੱਟਣ ਲਈ ਤੂੰ ਮਿਥੇ ਹੋਏ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਵੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈਂ,
ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਬਿਸਥਾਰ ॥
cho-aa chandan suganDh bisthaar.
You lavishly use cosmetics, scents and perfumes,
ਅਤਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਸੁਗੰਧੀਆਂ ਵਰਤਦੀ ਹੈਂ,
ਸੰਗੀ ਖੋਟਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥੩॥
sangee khotaa kroDh chandaal. ||3||
but your constant companion is the demon of anger.||3||
ਪਰ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ ॥੩॥
ਅਵਰ ਜੋਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਪਨਿਹਾਰੀ ॥
avar jon tayree panihaaree.
All other species are subservient to you.
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਸੇਵਕ ਹਨ,
ਇਸੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਿਕਦਾਰੀ ॥
is Dhartee meh tayree sikdaaree.
On this earth your are established as the ruling class over other species.
ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਸਰਦਾਰੀ ਹੈ।
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੂਪਾ ਤੁਝ ਪਹਿ ਦਾਮ ॥
su-inaa roopaa tujh peh daam.
You have all kinds of gold, silver and wealth (which other species don’t have).
ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਸੋਨਾ ਹੈ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ (ਹੋਰ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਇਹ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ)
ਸੀਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਮ ॥੪॥
seel bigaari-o tayraa kaam. ||4||
But lust has destroyed your good nature. ||4||
ਪਰ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸਨਾ ਨੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ ॥੪॥
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
jaa ka-o darisat ma-i-aa har raa-ay.
On whom the sovereign God casts His merciful glance,
ਜਿਸ ਉਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਸਾ ਬੰਦੀ ਤੇ ਲਈ ਛਡਾਇ ॥
saa bandee tay la-ee chhadaa-ay.
is liberated from the bonds of such evils as greed, lust, and anger.
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ (ਲੋਭ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਾਮ ਆਦਿਕ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਛਡਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saaDhsang mil har ras paa-i-aa.
Joining the Holy congregation, one who relishes the elixir of God’s Name,
ਜਿਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੇ (ਜੀਵ ਨੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਦ ਮਾਣਿਆ,
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਓਹ ਕਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
kaho naanak safal oh kaa-i-aa. ||5||
only that human being is successful, says Nanak. ||5|
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬ ਹੈ ॥੫॥
ਸਭਿ ਰੂਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਬਨੇ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥
sabh roop sabh sukh banay suhaagan.
O’ such human body, all beautification and comforts would behoove you, if you remain united with God;
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਵਾਲੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੋਹਜ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੁਖ (ਜੋ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ) ਤੈਨੂੰ ਫਬ ਜਾਣ;
ਅਤਿ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਬਿਚਖਨਿ ਤੂੰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥
at sundar bichkhan tooN. ||1|| rahaa-o doojaa. ||12||
and you would look extremely beautiful and smart. ||1||second pause||12||
ਤੂੰ (ਸਚ-ਮੁਚ) ਬੜੀ ਸੋਹਣੀ ਤੇ ਬੜੀ ਸਿਆਣੀ ਬਣ ਜਾਏਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧੨॥

Raag Aasaa, Ik-Tukas 2, Fifth Guru:
ਜੀਵਤ ਦੀਸੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat deesai tis sarpar marnaa.
One who seems to be living in the ego of Maya, will surely die spiritually.
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ) ਜੀਊਂਦਾ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਹੜੱਪ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦੀ ਹੈ;
ਮੁਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਰਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
mu-aa hovai tis nihchal rahnaa. ||1||
But he who is free of ego and worldly attachments will remain eternal. ||1||
ਪਰ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਛੋਹ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਟੱਲ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜੀਵਤ ਮੁਏ ਮੁਏ ਸੇ ਜੀਵੇ ॥
jeevat mu-ay mu-ay say jeevay.
Those who destroy their ego while still alive, will spiritually live on.
ਜਿਹੜੇ (ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਤੋਂ) ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਐਸੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਵਖਧੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har har naam avkhaDh mukh paa-i-aa gur sabdi ras amrit peevay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Those who recite God’s Name as if they have put the medicine of Naam in their mouth; through the Guru’s teachings, they enjoy the ambrosial nectar of Naam. ||1||pause||
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ-ਦਾਰੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ l ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਾਚੀ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਾ ॥
kaachee matukee binas binaasaa.
Like a clay pot, the body ultimately shall be destroyed.
(ਸਰੀਰ ਰੂਪੀ) ਕੱਚਾ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਜਰੂਰ ਹੀ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਊਗਾ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਛੂਟੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੨॥
jis chhootai tarikutee tis nij ghar vaasaa. ||2||
The one who is free from the effects of Maya remain united with God. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਈ ਖਿੱਝ ਮੁੱਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਊਚਾ ਚੜੈ ਸੁ ਪਵੈ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥
oochaa charhai so pavai pa-i-aalaa.
One who keeps flying high in self-conceit, spiritually falls deep into the pit of humiliation.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਰ ਉੱਚਾ ਕਰੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਆਕੜਿਆ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਟੋਏ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਧਰਨਿ ਪੜੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
Dharan parhai tis lagai na kaalaa. ||3||
The one who lives in humility is never afflicted by spiritual death. ||3||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਪੋਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ ॥੩॥
ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਫਿਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bharmat firay tin kichhoo na paa-i-aa.
Those who continue to wander around chasing Maya, achieve nothing useful.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਹੀ ਸਦਾ) ਭਟਕਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ
ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
say asthir jin gur sabad kamaa-i-aa. ||4||
Those who follow the Guru’s word in their life, remain stable and are not influenced by Maya. ||4||
ਪਰ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ) ਅਡੋਲ-ਚਿੱਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੪॥
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
jee-o pind sabh har kaa maal.
Those who consider this body and soul as Gift from God.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਿੰਦ ਤੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
naanak gur mil bha-ay nihaal. ||5||13||
O Nanak, by following the Guru’s teaching, they remain delighted. ||5||13||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਖਿੜੇ-ਮੱਥੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੫॥੧੩॥

Raag Aasaa, Fifth Guru:
ਪੁਤਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਟੀ ॥
putree tayree biDh kar thaatee.
No doubt God has fashioned your body with great skill .
(ਇਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ) ਤੇਰਾ ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਬੜੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਨਾਲ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ,
ਜਾਨੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੋਇਗੀ ਮਾਟੀ ॥੧॥
jaan sat kar ho-igee maatee. ||1||
Know for sure that ultimately it shall turn to dust. ||1||
(ਪਰ ਇਹ ਭੀ) ਸੱਚ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਕਿ (ਇਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਨੇ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ) ਮਿੱਟੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਮੂਲੁ ਸਮਾਲਹੁ ਅਚੇਤ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
mool samaalahu achayt gavaaraa.
O’ ignorant fool, enshrine God in your heart from Whom you originated.
ਹੇ ਬੇਸਮਝ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ! ਜਿਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਮੁੱਢ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ) ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਸਾਂਭ ਕੇ ਰੱਖ।
ਇਤਨੇ ਕਉ ਤੁਮ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕਿਆ ਗਰਬੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
itnay ka-o tumH ki-aa garbay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why are you so proud of your body? ||1||pause||
ਇਸ ਹੋਛੀ ਪਾਂਇਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ ਕੀਹ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਤੀਨਿ ਸੇਰ ਕਾ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥
teen sayr kaa dihaarhee mihmaan.
O’ human being), you are like a guest in this world, who consumes only 3 seers (about 7 lbs.) of food daily
(ਤੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ) ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਹੈਂ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਾ ਤਿੰਨ ਸੇਰ (ਕੱਚੇ ਆਟਾ ਆਦਿਕ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਵਰ ਵਸਤੁ ਤੁਝ ਪਾਹਿ ਅਮਾਨ ॥੨॥
avar vasat tujh paahi amaan. ||2||
and all other things are held in trust with you. ||2||
ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਾਸ ਅਮਾਨਤ (ਵਾਂਗ ਹੀ ਪਈ) ਹੈ ॥੨॥
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਅਸਤ ਰਕਤੁ ਪਰੇਟੇ ਚਾਮ ॥
bistaa asat rakat paraytay chaam.
You are nothing but ordure, bones and blood wrapped in skin.
ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਟਾ ਹੱਡੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਲਹੂ (ਆਦਿਕ ਬਾਹਰਲੇ) ਚੰਮ ਨਾਲ ਲਪੇਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ l
ਇਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਲੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਗੁਮਾਨ ॥੩॥
is oopar lay raakhi-o gumaan. ||3||
It is on this filthy bundle you have based your conceit. ||3||
ਇਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਤੂੰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਧਾਰੀ ਬੈਠਾ ਹੈਂ ॥੩॥
ਏਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਕ ॥
ayk vasat boojheh taa hoveh paak.
If you could realize the wealth of God’s Name, then your conduct would become pure.
ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾ ਲਏਂ ਤਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਏਂ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਪਾਕ ॥੪॥
bin boojhay tooN sadaa naapaak. ||4||
Without realizing God’s Name, your conduct shall be impure forever. ||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਹੈਂ ॥੪॥
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਕੁਰਬਾਨੁ ॥
kaho naanak gur ka-o kurbaan.
Nanak says, dedicate yourself to the Guru;
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- (ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਜੀਵ!) ਉਸ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਸਦਕੇ ਹੋ,
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥੫॥੧੪॥
jis tay paa-ee-ai har purakh sujaan. ||5||14||
through whom, we realize the all pervading sagacious God. ||5||14||
ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੫॥੧੪॥
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ਇਕਤੁਕੇ ਚਉਪਦੇ ॥

ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
ik gharhee dinas mo ka-o bahut dihaaray.
To me, even a moment of separation from Husband-God seems like many days.
ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਘੜੀ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਜਾਪਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਮਨੁ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਮਿਲਉ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥
man na rahai kaisay mila-o pi-aaray. ||1||
My mind is not pacified without seeing Him, how can I meet my Beloved? ||1||
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਧੀਰਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੜਦਾ (ਮੈਂ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਸੋਚਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ) ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲਾਂ ॥੧॥
ਇਕੁ ਪਲੁ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ॥
ik pal dinas mo ka-o kabahu na bihaavai.
A moment of separated from Husband-God, seems to me like an endless day.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਪਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਵਿਚ) ਇਕ ਪਲ ਭੀ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਭੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਇਉਂ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕਦੇ ਮੁੱਕਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ।
