ਅਵਰੀ ਨੋ ਸਮਝਾਵਣਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
avree no samjhaavan jaa-ay.
And yet, he goes out to teach others.
ਫਿਰ ਭੀ, ਉਹ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਮੁਠਾ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਹਾਏ ਸਾਥੈ ॥
muthaa aap muhaa-ay saathai.
He is deceived, and he gets his companions also cheated.
(ਉਹ) ਆਪ ਤਾਂ ਠੱਗਿਆ ਜਾ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਲੁਟਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਐਸਾ ਆਗੂ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੧॥
naanak aisaa aagoo jaapai. ||1||
O’ Nanak, such a leader gets exposed.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜੇਹਾ ਆਗੂ (ਅੰਤ ਇਉਂ) ਉੱਘੜਦਾ ਹੈ

shalok, by the Fourth Guru:
ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਅਲਾਏ ॥
jis dai andar sach hai so sachaa naam mukh sach alaa-ay.
The one in whose heart enshirines God, he speaks only the truth
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੂੰਹੋਂ (ਭੀ) ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ.
ਓਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
oh har maarag aap chaldaa hornaa no har maarag paa-ay.
He follows the righteous path in life and inspires others to do the same.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਰਾਹ ਤੇ ਤੋਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੇ ਅਗੈ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਮਲੁ ਲਹੈ ਛਪੜਿ ਨਾਤੈ ਸਗਵੀ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
jay agai tirath ho-ay taa mal lahai chhaparh naatai sagvee mal laa-ay.
Just as bathing in a pool of fresh water, one is washed clean of filth. But, by bathing in a stagnant pond, he is contaminated with even more filth.
(ਜਿੱਥੇ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਜਾਈਏ) ਜੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ (ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੀ) ਮੈਲ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਛੱਪੜ ਵਿਚ ਨ੍ਹਾਤਿਆਂ ਸਗੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਮੈਲ ਵਧਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਤੀਰਥੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੋ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥
tirath pooraa satguroo jo an-din har har naam Dhi-aa-ay.
The True Guru, who always meditates on the Name of God, is like the Perfect Pool of Holy Water.
ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੋ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਨੋ) ਖੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਸਾਫ਼ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਸੋਮਾ ਹੈ।
ਓਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਛੁਟਾ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਿਉ ਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਭ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਛਡਾਏ ॥
oh aap chhutaa kutamb si-o day har har naam sabh sarisat chhadaa-ay.
The Guru is saved, along with his family; bestowing God’s Name, He saves the entire world.
ਉਹ ਆਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਮੇਤ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਬਚਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਣੈ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਜਪੈ ਅਵਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਾਏ ॥੨॥
jan naanak tis balihaarnai jo aap japai avraa naam japaa-ay. ||2||
Nanak is dedicated to the one who himself meditate on God’s Name with love and devotion and inspires others as well.
ਸੇਵਕ ਨਾਨਕ, ਉਸ ਉਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹੜਾ ਖੁਦ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Pauree:
ਇਕਿ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੁ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਹਿ ਵਣ ਖੰਡਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
ik kand mool chun khaahi van khand vaasaa.
Some pick and eat fruits and root vegetables, and live in the wilderness.
ਕਈ ਫਲ ਤੇ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਚੁਗ ਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗਲਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੂਹਾਂ ਅੰਦਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਇਕਿ ਭਗਵਾ ਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸਾ ॥
ik bhagvaa vays kar fireh jogee saniaasaa.
Some wander around wearing saffron robes, as Yogis and Sanyasis.
ਕਈ ਲੋਕ ਭਗਵੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਤੇ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ॥
andar tarisnaa bahut chhaadan bhojan kee aasaa.
But within them still remains the desire for beautiful garments and tasty dishes..
ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਲਾਲਚ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੱਪੜੇ ਤੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਟਿਕੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਨ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਨ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
birthaa janam gavaa-ay na girhee na udaasaa.
They waste their lives uselessly; they are neither householders nor renunciates.
ਅਜਾਈਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਹ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਹੀ ਫ਼ਕੀਰ।
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮਨਸਾ ॥
jamkaal sirahu na utrai taribaDh mansaa.
The Messenger (fear) of Death hangs over their heads, and they cannot escape the desire for three-phased Maya (vice, virtue and power).
ਤ੍ਰਿਗੁਣੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਟਲਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਜਾ ਹੋਵੈ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥
gurmatee kaal na aavai nayrhai jaa hovai daasan daasaa.
Fear of death does not come near the one, who follow the Guru’s teachings, and becomes the humble devotees of God.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੇਵਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਉਸਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ।
ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥
sachaa sabad sach man ghar hee maahi udaasaa.
The Guru’s True Word and the eternal God dwells in his mind; and even while living as a householder, he becomes a true renouncer.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਸਬਦ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਉਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਤ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਸੇ ਆਸਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
naanak satgur sayvan aapnaa say aasaa tay niraasaa. ||5||
O’ Nanak, those who serve and follow the teachings of their True Guru, become free of worldly desires.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ l

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਜੇ ਰਤੁ ਲਗੈ ਕਪੜੈ ਜਾਮਾ ਹੋਇ ਪਲੀਤੁ ॥
jay rat lagai kaprhai jaamaa ho-ay paleet.
If blood sticks to one’s garment, it becomes polluted and unworthy for praying.
ਜੇ ਜਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਲਹੂ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਵੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜਾਮਾ ਪਲੀਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਨਮਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ)
ਜੋ ਰਤੁ ਪੀਵਹਿ ਮਾਣਸਾ ਤਿਨ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
jo rat peeveh maansaa tin ki-o nirmal cheet.
But those who suck the blood of human beings (by exploiting and oppressing the poor) -how can their consciousness be pure?
ਜਿਹੜੇ ਇਨਸਾਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਹੂ ਚੁਸਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਉ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਕਾ ਦਿਲਿ ਹਛੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
naanak naa-o khudaa-ay kaa dil hachhai mukh layho.
O’ Nanak, meditate on the Name of God, with pure and sincere heart.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਸਾਫ਼ ਦਿਲ ਨਾਲ ਲੈ,
ਅਵਰਿ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ਦੁਨੀ ਕੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਅਮਲ ਕਰੇਹੁ ॥੧॥
avar divaajay dunee kay jhoothay amal karayhu. ||1||
Everything else is just a pompous worldly show, and the practice of false deeds.
ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੰਮ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਖਾਵੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀ ਕੂੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ l

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਜਾ ਹਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਾ ਕਿਹੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਵਾ ॥
jaa ha-o naahee taa ki-aa aakhaa kihu naahee ki-aa hovaa.
Since I am no one, what can I say ? Since I am nothing, what can I be? (I do not have any spiritual merits, so I can’t say anything or be somebody of any worth).
ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਵ, ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਹਸਤੀ ਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣੀ), ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕੀਹ ਕਰਾਂ? (ਅੰਦਰ) ਕੋਈ ਆਤਮਕ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਤਨਾ ਕੁਝ ਬਣ ਬਣ ਕੇ ਵਿਖਾਵਾਂ?
ਕੀਤਾ ਕਰਣਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਕਥਨਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਭਰਿ ਭਰਿ ਧੋਵਾਂ ॥
keetaa karnaa kahi-aa kathnaa bhari-aa bhar bhar DhovaaN.
As He created me, so I act. As He causes me to speak, so I speak. I am full of sins, and repeatedly I wash myself (with the water of the holy Naam).
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਖਿਆ ਹੈ, ਉਵੇ ਮੈਂ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਲਬਾਲਬ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਲਿਬੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਾਂ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਧੋਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੁਝਾ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਐਸਾ ਆਗੂ ਹੋਵਾਂ ॥
aap na bujhaa lok bujhaa-ee aisaa aagoo hovaaN.
I do not understand myself, and yet I try to teach others. what a guide I am!
ਖੁਦ ਮੈਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਫਿਰ ਭੀ ਹੋਰਨਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ। ਐਹੋ ਜੇਹਾ ਆਗੂ ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਧਾ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੈ ਸਭਸੁ ਮੁਹਾਏ ਸਾਥੈ ॥
naanak anDhaa ho-ay kai dasay raahai sabhas muhaa-ay saathai.
O’ Nanak, a person who himself is blind but shows the path to others, misleads all his companions.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਹ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਥ ਨੂੰ ਲੁਟਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਅਗੈ ਗਇਆ ਮੁਹੇ ਮੁਹਿ ਪਾਹਿ ਸੁ ਐਸਾ ਆਗੂ ਜਾਪੈ ॥੨॥
agai ga-i-aa muhay muhi paahi so aisaa aagoo jaapai. ||2||
Such an ignorant and false leader will be exposed in God’s court and would face severe punishment and disgrace.
ਅੱਗੇ ਚੱਲ ਕੇ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਮੂੰਹ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ (ਜੁੱਤੀਆਂ) ਪੈਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਤਦੋਂ ਅਜੇਹਾ ਆਗੂ (ਅਸਲ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ) ਉੱਘੜਦਾ ਹੈ

Pauree:
ਮਾਹਾ ਰੁਤੀ ਸਭ ਤੂੰ ਘੜੀ ਮੂਰਤ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
maahaa rutee sabh tooN gharhee moorat veechaaraa.
O’ God, there is no special or auspicious time to meditate, one can meditate on You through all the months, seasons, the minutes and the hours.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਸਭ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਰੁੱਤਾਂ ਘੜੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਮੁਹੂਰਤਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਰੁੱਤ ਜਾਂ ਥਿੱਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
ਤੂੰ ਗਣਤੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਸਚੇ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
tooN gantai kinai na paa-i-o sachay alakh apaaraa.
O’ unfathomable and infinite God, no one has ever realized You by calculating the auspicious moment.
ਹੇ ਅਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਥਿੱਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਗਿਣ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਭੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੱਭਿਆ।
ਪੜਿਆ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਲਬੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
parhi-aa moorakh aakhee-ai jis lab lobh ahaNkaaraa.
Such a scholar, who is full of greed, arrogant pride and egotism, should be considered a fool.
ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹੀ ਥਿੱਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਿੱਦਿਆ ਪੜ੍ਹੇ ਹੋਏ ਨੂੰ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੋਭ ਤੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਉ ਪੜੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
naa-o parhee-ai naa-o bujhee-ai gurmatee veechaaraa.
We should meditate and realize God by reflecting on the Guru’s teachings.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਮਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਜੋੜਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਨੁ ਖਟਿਆ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
gurmatee naam Dhan khati-aa bhagtee bharay bhandaaraa.
They who have earned the wealth of Naam, by following the Guru’s teachings, their treasures (hearts) are overflowing with devotional worship.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਤੇ ਤੁਰ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਧਨ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥
nirmal naam mani-aa dar sachai sachi-aaraa.
They who have believed in the Immaculate Naam, have been honored in God’s Court.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਕਬੂਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਖ਼ਰੂ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਰਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
jis daa jee-o paraan hai antar jot apaaraa.
The divine Light of the infinite God, who owns the soul and the breath of life, is deep within all the creatures.
ਜੋ ਜੀਵ ਦੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਦੀ ਰੋਸ਼ਨੀ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੈ।
ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਇਕੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
sachaa saahu ik tooN hor jagat vanjaaraa. ||6||
O’ God, You alone are the True Banker, the rest of the world is a petty trader.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਸਦਾ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈਂ, ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਹੈ

Shalok, by the First Guru:
ਮਿਹਰ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ ਮੁਸਲਾ ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ॥
mihar maseet sidak muslaa hak halaal kuraan.
Let mercy be your mosque, faith your prayer-mat, and honest living your Quran.
ਲੋਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਤਰਸ ਦੀ ਮਸੀਤ ਬਣਾਓ, ਸਰਧਾ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਸੱਲਾ ਤੇ ਹੱਕ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਰਾਨ ਬਣਾਓ।
ਸਰਮ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਰੋਜਾ ਹੋਹੁ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ॥
saram sunat seel rojaa hohu musalmaan.
Make modesty your circumcision, and good conduct your fast. In this way, you shall be a true Muslim.
ਵਿਕਾਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਲੋਂ ਝੱਕਣਾ-ਇਹ ਸੁੰਨਤ ਹੋਵੇ, ਚੰਗਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਬਣੇ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਬਣ।
ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਬਾ ਸਚੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਕਲਮਾ ਕਰਮ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥
karnee kaabaa sach peer kalmaa karam nivaaj.
Let good conduct be your Kaaba, Truth your spiritual guide, and the good deeds your prayer and chant.
ਚੰਗੇ ਆਚਰਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬਾ, ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਰੂਹਾਨੀ ਰਹਿਬਰ ਅਤੇ ਨੇਕ ਅਮਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਲਮਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਮਾਜ਼ ਬਣਾ।
ਤਸਬੀ ਸਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਖੈ ਲਾਜ ॥੧॥
tasbee saa tis bhaavsee naanak rakhai laaj. ||1||
Let your rosary be that which is pleasing to His Will. O’ Nanak, God shall preserve the honor of such a muslim.
ਜੋ ਗੱਲ ਉਸ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਵੇ, ਉਹੀ ਸਿਰ ਮੱਥੇ ਤੇ ਮੰਨਣੀ, ਇਹ ਤਸਬੀ ਹੋਵੇ। ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਅਜਿਹੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਰੱਬ) ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ
