The Guru Granth Sahib is the central religious scripture for Sikhism and is considered to be the eternal Guru for Sikhs. It contains a very heterogeneous anthology of hymns and poetries on spiritual, moral, and philosophical themes: compiled first by Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Guru, in 1604, and finally by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru.
The Guru Granth Sahib is written in Gurmukhi script and contains the Sikh Gurus, other saints, and poets of quite diverse origins, who possess universally powerful writings, which are only so through a message of divine unity, love, and compassion. It is divided into 1430 pages, Ang’s, and structured by musical measures called Raags.
The general ideas presented are:
God is one—Ik Onkar. The central concept is that of Naam, or the Holy Name.
Caste, creed, and superstitions are rejected; the absolute need for equality and justice is endorsed.
The need for living a truthful and righteous life: humility, service, and devotion are underscored as one reaches for spiritual enlightenment and emancipation with the grace and guidance of the Guru.
Guru Granth Sahib has been a lively Guru, and is still providing not only spiritual but also ethical guidance to Sikhs and humanity at large. It is read and revered every day of the year, and its ideas and teachings are fabricated into the very basics of the Sikh way of life.

ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗ ਸਹਜ ਰਸ ਮਾਣੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗਿਓ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੬੦॥
naam rang sahj ras maanay fir dookh na laagi-o. ||4||2||160||
Imbued with Naam I am enjoying the intuitive peace; no pain or suffering of any kind bothers me anymore. ||4||2||160||
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਂਹਦਾ। ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਣ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੬੦॥
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਲਾਵੈ ॥
antar baahar sadaa sang parabh taa si-o nayhu na laavai.
He does not enshrine love for God, who is always nearby, within and without.
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦਾ।
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
raam na jaani-aa kartaa so-ee.
He did not remember the creator God.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਕੇ) ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਨਾਹ ਰੱਖਿਆ
ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਹੁ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
aapnaa man parboDhahu boojhhu so-ee.
O’ Pandit, First awaken your own mind and understand the existence of God yourself.
ਹੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ! ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਾਓ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਹਸਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝੋ।
ਹਮ ਪੰਖੀ ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਕਾਲਿ ॥
ham pankhee man karhalay har tarvar purakh akaal.
O’ my camel-like mind, we are all like the wandering birds and the eternal God like a tree is our support,
ਹੇ ਬੇ-ਮੁਹਾਰੇ ਮਨ! ਅਸੀਂ ਜੀਵ ਪੰਛੀ ਹਾਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕੋਈ ਰੁੱਖ ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਤ-ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਲਈ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹਰੀ ਸਾਡਾ ਜੀਵ-ਪੰਛੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ- ਰੁੱਖ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਅਸਨੇਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam binaa Dharig Dharig asnayhu. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without Naam, accursed is any other worldly love. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੋਹ- ਪਿਆਰ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ਫਿਟਕਾਰ-ਜੋਗ ਹੈ ॥
ਇਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਕੁਸਤਿ ਭਰਿਆ ਗਲ ਤਾਈ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਏ ॥
ih sareer koorh kusat bhari-aa gal taa-ee paap kamaa-ay.
This body is brimful with falsehood and deception, and keeps committing sins.
ਇਹ ਸਰੀਰ ਝੂਠ ਠੱਗੀ-ਫ਼ਰੇਬ ਨਾਲ ਨਕਾ-ਨਕ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜੀਵ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਛਾਡਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਬਹੁ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
chhaad si-aanap baho chaturaa-ee.
O’ my mind, give up your excessive cleverness,
