The Guru Granth Sahib Ji, also called the Adi Granth, is the main sacred book for the Sikhs. It is considered to be the eternal Guru by them after their ten human Gurus. It was compiled by the fifth Sikh Guru Guru Arjan in 1604 and later expanded upon by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh. It contains 1430 pages and is written in Gurmukhi script. This holy book is a collection of hymns written by Sikh Gurus and different saints from different backgrounds and from the beginning of Khalsa religion.
ਤਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਸੂਚੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਚੀਤਿ ॥
tan man soochai saach so cheet.
By enshrining eternal God in their heart, their body and mind are rendered immaculate.
ਉਸ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਦਰ ਟਿਕਾਉਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇ ਆਤਮਾ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
ga-orhee mehlaa 1.
Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਐਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
aiso daas milai sukh ho-ee.
Celestial peace wells up within the one, who meets such a devotee of God.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਇਹੋ ਜਿਹਾ ਦਾਸ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ) ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥
jan ka-o dookh pachai dukh ho-ee. ||9||
One who makes God’s humble devotee suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9||
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਉਸ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਖ਼ੁਆਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ॥੯॥
ਜਿਉ ਮੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਲਾਸਾ ॥
ji-o meenaa jal maahi ulaasaa.
and as the fish delights in the water,
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੱਛੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਬੜੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ham har raakhay gur sabad beechaari-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God has protected me spiritually, as I contemplate the Guru’s word. ||1||Pause|.
ਮੇਰੇ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਉਪਜੰਪਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਤਾ ਕਾ ॥੧॥
upjamp darsan keejai taa kaa. ||1||
We should see the sight of that holy person at early dawn. ||1||
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਨਿੱਤ ਸਵੇਰੇ ਉਠਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜੀਅਰੇ ਓਲ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਾ ॥
jee-aray olHaa naam kaa.
O’ my soul, Naam is your only real strength here and hereafter.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਿੰਦੇ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ (ਹੀ) ਆਸਰਾ (ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਗਹੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saaDhsangat mil har raveh say gunee gaheer. ||1||rahaa-o.
Those who join the saintly congregation and meditate on God become virtuous. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਜਿਗਰੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
