ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਗਦ ਲਖ ਮਣਾ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕੀਚੈ ਭਾਉ ॥
naanak kaagad lakh manaa parh parh keechai bhaa-o.
O’ Nanak, if I had tons of Paper with Your praises written on them and if I were to contemplate on them.
Ee Nanak, iwapo ningekuwa na tani za karatasi zilizoandikwa sifa zako na ningetafakari kuzihusu.

ਮਸੂ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਪਉਣੁ ਚਲਾਉ ॥
masoo tot na aavee laykhan pa-un chalaa-o.
And if I were to write your praises with never ending ink and pen moving as fast as the wind,
Na iwapo ningekuwa niandike sifa zako kwa wino usiokwisha na kalamu inayoandika upesi kama upepo,

ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਹਉ ਕੇਵਡੁ ਆਖਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੨॥
bhee tayree keemat naa pavai ha-o kayvad aakhaa naa-o. ||4||2||
even then Your worth could not be determined. How could I describe Your greatness?
Hata wakati huo thamani yako haingeweza kuthibitishwa. Ningewezaje kueleza ukuu wako?

ਲੇਖੈ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਲੇਖੈ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਉ ॥
laykhai bolan bolnaa laykhai khaanaa khaa-o.
O’ mortal, the words you speak and whatever you eat are pre-ordained and you are accountable for these.
Ee binadamu, maneno unayozungumza na chochote unachokula kimeagiziwa mapema na wewe unawajibikia haya.

ਲੇਖੈ ਵਾਟ ਚਲਾਈਆ ਲੇਖੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਾਉ ॥
laykhai vaat chalaa-ee-aa laykhai sun vaykhaa-o.
We are accountable for the path we walk on (choices we make) including what we hear and what we see.
Sisi tunawajibikia njia tunayotembelea (maamuzi tunayofanya) ikiwemo tunayosikia na tunayoona.

ਲੇਖੈ ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਈਅਹਿ ਪੜੇ ਕਿ ਪੁਛਣ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
laykhai saah lavaa-ee-ahi parhay ke puchhan jaa-o. ||1||
The breaths you take (life span), are all pre-ordained and you are accountable for them. There is no need to ask any scholar about it.
Pumzi unazopumua (muda wa kuishi), zote zimeagiziwa mapema nawe unaziwajibikia. Hakuna haja ya kuuliza msomi yeyote kuihusu.

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਚਨਾ ਧੋਹੁ ॥
baabaa maa-i-aa rachnaa Dhohu.
Oh my friend, this play of Maya is nothing but an illusion.
Ee rafiki wangu, mchezo huu wa Maya ni njozi tu.

ਅੰਧੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਏਹ ਨ ਓਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anDhai naam visaari-aa naa tis ayh na oh. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The spiritually blind forsake God’s Name, and don’t attain peace, neither here nor hereafter.
Vipofu wa kiroho wanaacha Jina la Mungu, hawapati amani, humu wala akhera.

ਜੀਵਣ ਮਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਏਥੈ ਖਾਜੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
jeevan marnaa jaa-ay kai aythai khaajai kaal.
In this world, from birth to death, a person wastes valuable time accumulating worldly wealth
Duniani humu, kutoka kuzaliwa hadi kufa, mtu anaharibu wakati wenye thamani akikusanya utajiri wa kidunia

ਜਿਥੈ ਬਹਿ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਤਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
jithai bahi samjaa-ee-ai tithai ko-ay na chali-o naal.
Upon death, you solely are held accountable for your deeds. No one is going to come to your rescue.
Unapokufa, wewe mwenyewe unawajibikia vitendo vyako. Hakuna mtu atakuja kukuokoa.

ਰੋਵਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਜੇਤੜੇ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
rovan vaalay jayt-rhay sabh baneh pand paraal. ||2||
Even those who cry at a person’s death, do no good to anybody, and their tearsare as useless as a bundles of straw.
Hata wale wanaolia mtu anapokufa, hawana manufaa kwa mtu yeyote, na machozi yao ni bure kama matita ya nyasi.

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨ ਆਖੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabh ko aakhai bahut bahut ghat na aakhai ko-ay.
O’ God, everyone asks You for more and more wealth and no one asks for less.
Ee Mungu, kila mtu anakuitisha utajiri zaidi na zaidi na hakuna anayeitisha kiasi kidogo.

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ਕਹਣਿ ਨ ਵਡਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
keemat kinai na paa-ee-aa kahan na vadaa ho-ay.
No one has ever put any value on the things one has asked for. No one has become greater by his own saying.
Hakuna mtu amewahi kuweka thamani yoyote kwa vitu ambavyo ameulizia. Hakuna mtu amewahi kuwa mkuu kwa kusema kwake mwenyewe.

ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਹੋਰਿ ਜੀਆ ਕੇਤੇ ਲੋਅ ॥੩॥
saachaa saahab ayk too hor jee-aa kaytay lo-a. ||3||
O’ God, You alone are the eternal One. All other beings and all other worlds are perishable.
Ee Mungu, Wewe peke yako ndiwe yule wa milele. Viumbe vyote vingine na dunia zote zingine zinaweza kuangamia.

ਨੀਚਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਨੀਚੀ ਹੂ ਅਤਿ ਨੀਚੁ ॥
neechaa andar neech jaat nee chee hoo at neech.
O’ God), even if a person belongs to the lowliest of the low social status,
(Ee Mungu), hata iwapo mtu anatoka kwa hadhi ya chini zaidi ya kljamii,

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਥਿ ਵਡਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੀਸ ॥
nanak tin kai sang saath vadi-aa si-o ki-aa rees. O’ God,
Nanak prefers to remain in their society and company and does not want to compete with those in upper class (who have forgotten You).
Ee Mungu, Nanak anapendelea kusalia katika jamii na uandamano wapo wala hataki kushindana na wale kutoka kwa tabaka la juu (ambao wamekusahau Wewe).

ਜਿਥੈ ਨੀਚ ਸਮਾਲੀਅਨਿ ਤਿਥੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਖਸੀਸ ॥੪॥੩॥
jithai neech samaalee-an tithai nadar tayree bakhsees. ||4||3||
There is the glance of Your grace, where the humble ones are looked after.
Kuna mtazamo wa neema yako, ambapo wanyenyekevu wanachungwa.

ਲਬੁ ਕੁਤਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਚੂਹੜਾ ਠਗਿ ਖਾਧਾ ਮੁਰਦਾਰੁ ॥
lab kutaa koorh choohrhaa thag khaaDhaa murdaar.
Being engrossed in greed is acting like a dog, lying is like dealing with filth, and cheating others is like eating a corpse.
Kuvama katika tamaa ni kutenda kama mbwa, kudanganya ni kufanya biashara ya uchafu, na kulaghai wengine ni kama kula maiti.

ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਰ ਮਲੁ ਮੁਖ ਸੁਧੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਚੰਡਾਲੁ ॥
par nindaa par mal mukh suDhee agan kroDh chandaal.
Slandering others is like putting their filth in your mouth, acting in anger is like burning your own body.
Kuchongeza wengine ni kama kuweka uchafu wao mdomoni mwako, kutenda kwa hasira ni kama kuchoma mwili wako mwenyewe.

ਰਸ ਕਸ ਆਪੁ ਸਲਾਹਣਾ ਏ ਕਰਮ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥੧॥
ras kas aap salaahnaa ay karam mayray kartaar. ||1||
O’ my Creator, remaining indulged in these vices and self praise is what we do.
Ee Muumba wangu, kubaki tumejihusisha katika maovu haya na majivuno ndicho ambacho tunafanya.

ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲੀਐ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
baabaa bolee-ai pat ho-ay.
O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor in God’s Court.
Ee Baba, zungumza tu kile ambacho kitakuletea staha katika Mahakama ya Mungu.

ਊਤਮ ਸੇ ਦਰਿ ਊਤਮ ਕਹੀਅਹਿ ਨੀਚ ਕਰਮ ਬਹਿ ਰੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ootam say dar ootam kahee-ahi neech karam bahi ro-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They alone are truly superior, who are judged virtuous in God’s court. Those who do evil deeds shall wail.
Wao peke yao kwa kweli ni wakuu zaidi, ambao wanahukumiwa kuwa wema katika mahakama ya Mungu. Wale wanaotenda vitendo viovu wataomboleza.

ਰਸੁ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰਸੁ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਰਮਲ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
ras su-inaa ras rupaa kaaman ras parmal kee vaas.
Being obsessed with amassing wealth, indulgence in lust and fragrances (without the remembrance of God) are addictions.
Kuwa na shiki ya kukusanya utajiri, kujihusisha katika ukware na manukato (bila ukumbusho wa Mungu) ni uraibu.

ਰਸੁ ਘੋੜੇ ਰਸੁ ਸੇਜਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਰਸੁ ਮਾਸੁ ॥
ras ghorhay ras sayjaa mandar ras meethaa ras maas.
and over indulgence in expensive rides, comfortable beds, tasty foods, and eating flesh are also addictions.
Na kujishughulisha mno katika magari ya bei ghali, vitanda vyenye starehe, vyakula vitamu, na kula nyama pia ni uraibu.

ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਕੈ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੨॥
aytay ras sareer kay kai ghat naam nivaas. ||2||
When so many addictions engross the human body, where is room left for God’s love to reside?
Wakati uraibu mwingi sana unavama katika mwili wa binadamu, kuna nafasi wapi ambapo upendo wa Mungu unaweza kuishi?

ਜਿਤੁ ਬੋਲਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸੋ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
jit boli-ai pat paa-ee-ai so boli-aa parvaan.
Only those words are praise-worthy that bring honor in God’s court.
Maneno hayo pekee yanastahili sifa yanayoleta staha katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਫਿਕਾ ਬੋਲਿ ਵਿਗੁਚਣਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮਨ ਅਜਾਣ ॥
fikaa bol viguchnaa sun moorakh man ajaan.
Listen, O’ foolish ignorant mind, by uttering rude words one ruins oneself.
Sikiliza, Ee akili mjinga mpumbavu, kwa kutamka maneno jeuri mtu anajiangamiza.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਿ ਕਹਣ ਵਖਾਣ ॥੩॥
jo tis bhaaveh say bhalay hor ke kahan vakhaan. ||3||
Those who are pleasing to Him are virtuous, what else is there to be said?
Wale wanaompendeza Yeye ni wema, kuna kipi kingine cha kusemwa?

ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
tin mat tin pat tin Dhan palai jin hirdai rahi-aa samaa-ay.
Those who always remember Him with love,and in whose hearts God always resides have true wisdom, true honor and true wealth.
Wale ambao daima wanamkumbuka Yeye kwa upendo, na ambao Mungu daima anaishi mioyoni mwao wana hekima ya kweli, staha ya kweli na utajiri wa kweli.

ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥
tin kaa ki-aa salaahnaa avar su-aali-o kaa-ay.
What praise can be offered for them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them?
Sifa gani inaweza kutolewa kwao? Mapambo yapi mengine yanaweza kutawazwa kwao?

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥
naanak nadree baahray raacheh daan na naa-ay. ||4||4||
O’ Nanak, those who lack God’s Grace, cherish neither charity (seva) nor His Name (His love) and stay engrossed in worldly pleasures.
Ee Nanak, wale wasio na Neema ya Mungu, hawathamini ukarimu (seva) wala Jina Lake (upendo wake) na wanabaki wamevama katika raha za kidunia.

ਅਮਲੁ ਗਲੋਲਾ ਕੂੜ ਕਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਦੇਵਣਹਾਰਿ ॥
amal galolaa koorh kaa ditaa dayvanhaar.
God Himself has engrossed people who are devoid of His Grace, in emotional attachment to worldly illusions or falsehood.
Mungu Mwenyewe amevamisha watu wasio na Neema yake, katika kiambatisho cha kihisia kwa njizo za kidunia au udanganyifu.

ਮਤੀ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਖੁਸੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
matee maran visaari-aa khusee keetee din chaar.
Engrossed in these emotional attachments, they become oblivious to death and indulge in temporary worldly pleasures.
Wakivama katika viambatisho hivi vya kidunia, hawatambui kifo na wanajihusisha katika raha za kidunia zisizodumu.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸੋਫੀਆ ਰਾਖਣ ਕਉ ਦਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
sach mili-aa tin sofee-aa raakhan ka-o darvaar. ||1||
Those who forsake this intoxicating love for worldly attachments have realized the Eternal God.
Wale wanaoacha upendo huu unaolevya wa viambatisho vya kidunia wamegundua Mungu anayeishi Milele.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥
naanak saachay ka-o sach jaan.
O’ Nanak, know that the true God alone is Eternal,
Ee Nanak, jua kwamba Mungu wa kweli peke yake ni wa Milele.

ਜਿਤੁ ਸੇਵਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jit sayvi-ai sukh paa-ee-ai tayree dargeh chalai maan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
serving Whom (remembering Him with loving devotion) one obtains joy and peace, and goes to God’s’ court with honor.
Ambaye kwa kumtumikia (kumkumbuka Yeye kwa ujitoaji wa upendo) mtu anapata furaha na amani, na anaenda kwa mahakama ya Mungu kwa staha.

ਸਚੁ ਸਰਾ ਗੁੜ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
sach saraa gurh baahraa jis vich sachaa naa-o.
Truth is the wine, which is distilled not from molasses, but from God’s Name.
Ukweli ndio divai, ambayo imetoneshwa sio kutoka kwa molasi, bali kutoka kwa Jina la Mungu.
