ਅੰਤਿ ਕਾਲਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਸੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਜਾ ਜਮਿ ਪਕੜਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
ant kaal pachhutaasee anDhulay jaa jam pakarh chalaa-i-aa.
At the end, the blind (spiritually ignorant) person regrets deeply when the messenger of death carries him away.
Mwishowe, kipofu (mjinga wa kiroho) anajuta sana wakati mjumbe wa kifo anamchukua.

ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਭਇਆ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥
sabh kichh apunaa kar kar raakhi-aa khin meh bha-i-aa paraa-i-aa.
All the worldly things that you collect, in an instant after death becomes someone else’s property.
Vitu vyote vya kidunia unavyokusanya, papo hapo baada ya kifo vinakuwa mali ya mtu mwengine.

ਬੁਧਿ ਵਿਸਰਜੀ ਗਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਰਿ ਅਵਗਣ ਪਛੁਤਾਇ ॥
buDh visarjee ga-ee si-aanap kar avgan pachhutaa-ay.
Your intellect left you, your wisdom departed, and now you repent for the evil deeds you committed.
Uwekevu wako umekuacha, hekima yako imeondoka, na sasa unatubu kwa maovu ambayo ulitenda.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੩॥
kaho naanak paraanee teejai pahrai parabh chaytahu liv laa-ay. ||3||
Nanak says, O mortal, in the third watch of night (third stage of life) watch of the night, let your consciousness be lovingly focused on God.
Nanak anasema, Ee binadamu, katika mtazamo wa tatu wa usiku (hatua ya tatu ya maisha) acha fahamu yako imakinikie Mungu kwa upendo.

ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਭਇਆ ਤਨੁ ਖੀਣੁ ॥
cha-uthai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa biraDh bha-i-aa tan kheen.
O’ my merchant friend, In the fourth watch of the night your body grows old and weak.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, katika mtazamo wa nne wa usiku mwili wako unazeeka na kudhoofika.

ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਦੀਸਈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੈ ਨ ਵੈਣ ॥
akhee anDh na dees-ee vanjaari-aa mitraa kannee sunai na vain.
Your eyes go blind, and cannot see, O my merchant friend, and your ears do not hear any words.
Macho yako yanapofuka, na hayawezi kuona, Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, na masikio yako hayasikii maneno yoyote.

ਅਖੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜੀਭ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਾਕਉ ਤਾਣਾ ॥
akhee anDh jeebh ras naahee rahay paraaka-o taanaa.
Your eyes go blind, and your tongue is unable to taste; you live only with the help of others.
Macho yako yanapofuka, na ulimi wako hauwezi kuonja; unaishi tu kwa usaidizi wa wengine.

ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
gun antar naahee ki-o sukh paavai manmukh aavan jaanaa.
How can a person without virtues find any peace? Therefore, the self-willed person goes in cycles of birth and death.
Mtu ambaye hana fadhila anawezaje kupata amani yoyote? Hivyo basi, mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anaenda kwenye mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਖੜੁ ਪਕੀ ਕੁੜਿ ਭਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਆਇ ਚਲੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣੁ ॥
kharh pakee kurh bhajai binsai aa-ay chalai ki-aa maan.
In old age, like a ripe crop, human body crumbles. How then can one be proud of this body (which is subject to decay and death)?
Uzeeni, kama mmea mbivu, mwili wa binadamu unaangamia. Mtu anawezaje basi kuwa na fahari kuhusu mwili (ambao unatiishwa kwa kuoza na kufa)?

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥੪॥
kaho naanak paraanee cha-uthai pahrai gurmukh sabad pachhaan. ||4||
Nanak says: “O’ my peddler friend, at least in the fourth stage of life (the old age), realize God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings.
Nanak anasema: Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, iwapo tu katika hatua ya nne ya maisha (uzeeni), gundua Jina la Mungu kupitia kwa mafundisho ya Guru.

ਓੜਕੁ ਆਇਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਹਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨਿ ॥
orhak aa-i-aa tin saahi-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa jar jarvaanaa kann.
O my merchant friend, the end of your allotted breaths has come, and your shoulders are weighed down by cruel old age.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, tamati ya pumzi zako zilizoagiziwa imefika, na mabega yako yamelegezwa na uzee mkatili.

ਇਕ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਨ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਅਵਗਣ ਖੜਸਨਿ ਬੰਨਿ ॥
ik ratee gun na samaani-aa vanjaari-aa mitraa avgan kharhsan bann.
O my merchant friend, throughout your life, you did not have even an iota of virtue, so now your own vices will bind you and drive you away.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, katika maisha yako yote, hukua na hata chembe cha fadhila, sasa wakati huu maovu yako mwenyewe yatakufunga na kukutokomeza.

ਗੁਣ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵੈ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
gun sanjam jaavai chot na khaavai naa tis jaman marnaa.
But the person who departs with self-discipline (or merits) and virtues, does not have to suffer and does not go through the the cycles of birth and death.
Lakini mtu anayeondoka na nidhamu binafsi (au sifa) na fadhila, halazimiki kuteseka na hapitii mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
kaal jaal jam johi na saakai bhaa-ay bhagat bhai tarnaa.
The Messenger of Death and his trap cannot touch him; through loving devotional worship, he crosses over the ocean of fear.
Mjumbe wa Kifo na mtego wake hauwezi kumgusa; kupitia ibada ya ujitoaji, yeye anavuka bahari ya uoga.

ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਾਵੈ ॥
pat saytee jaavai sahj samaavai saglay dookh mitaavai.
He goes with honor, absorbed in the supreme bliss, free of agonies.
Yeye anaenda na staha, anavama katika raha tele kuu, huru kutoka maumivu.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਛੂਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੫॥੨॥
kaho naanak paraanee gurmukh chhootai saachay tay pat paavai. ||5||2||
O’ Nanak, such a Guru’s follower is liberated from the worldly fears, he is honored by the True God.
Ee Nanak, mfuasi wa Guru kama huyo anakombolewa kutoka hofu za kidunia, anaenziwa na Mungu wa kweli.

ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਉਦਰ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥
pahilai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa har paa-i-aa udar manjhaar.
O my merchant friend, in the first watch of the night (stage of life), God places you in mother’s womb.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, katika mtazamo wa kwanza wa usiku (hatua ya maisha), Mungu anakuweka katika tumbo la mama.

ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਉਚਰੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਰਿ ॥
har Dhi-aavai har uchrai vanjaari-aa mitraa har har naam samaar.
(In the mother’s womb), O my merchant friend, you meditate on God, chant His Name, and remain absorbed in Him.
(Katika tumbo la mama), Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, unatafakari kuhusu Mungu, kuimba Jina lake, na kubaki umevama ndani Mwake.

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੇ ਆਰਾਧੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਅਗਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵਿਆ ॥
har har naam japay aaraaDhay vich agnee har jap jeevi-aa.
Chanting Naam, and meditating on it within the fire of the womb, your life is sustained by dwelling on the Naam.
Ukiimba Naam, na kutafakari kuihusu ndani mwa moto wa chupa cha uzazi, maisha yako yanatunzwa kwa kuishi kwa Naam.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਸਰਸੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਥੀਵਿਆ ॥
baahar janam bha-i-aa mukh laagaa sarsay pitaa maat theevi-aa.
You are born and you come out of mother’ womb, and your mother and father are delighted to see your face.
Unazaliwa na unatoka kwa tumbo la mama, na mama na baba yako wanafurahia kuona uso wako.

ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
jis kee vasat tis chaytahu paraanee kar hirdai gurmukh beechaar.
O’ mortals, remember the One, who sent this child to the world. Through the Guru’s teachings reflect upon Him within your heart.
Ee binadamu, kumbukeni yule Mmoja, aliyetuma mtoto huyu kwa dunia. Kupitia kwa mafundisho ya Guru tafakarini kuhusu Yeye moyoni mwenu.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak paraanee pahilai pahrai har japee-ai kirpaa Dhaar. ||1||
O Nanak, in the first stage of life, one can remember God only by His Grace.
Ee Nanak, katika hatua ya kwanza ya maisha, mtu anaweza kukumbuka Mungu kwa Neema Yake tu.

ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
doojai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa man laagaa doojai bhaa-ay.
O my merchant friend, in the second watch of the night,, the mind is attached to the love of duality.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, katika hatua ya pili ya usiku, akili inaambatishwa kwa upendo wa uwili.

ਮੇਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਲੀਐ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਲੇ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਲਾਇ ॥
mayraa mayraa kar paalee-ai vanjaari-aa mitraa lay maat pitaa gal laa-ay.
O my merchant friend, your mother and father hug you close in their embrace, claiming, “He is mine, he is mine”; so is the child brought up.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, mama na baba yako wanakukumbatia wakidai, “Yeye ni wangu, yeye ni wangu”; ndivyo mtoto anavyolelewa.

ਲਾਵੈ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਖਟਿ ਖਵਾਏ ॥
laavai maat pitaa sadaa gal saytee man jaanai khat khavaa-ay.
Your mother and father constantly hug you close in their embrace; in their minds, they believe that you will provide for them and support them.
Mama na baba yako wanakukumbatia mara kwa mara; akilini mwao, wanaamini kwamba utawatunza na kuwapa msaada.

ਜੋ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਮੂੜਾ ਦਿਤੇ ਨੋ ਲਪਟਾਏ ॥
jo dayvai tisai na jaanai moorhaa ditay no laptaa-ay.
The fool does not know the One who gives; instead, he clings to the gift.
Mpumbavu hajui yule Mmoja ambaye; badala yake, anakwamilia thawabu.

ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਕਰੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
ko-ee gurmukh hovai so karai veechaar har Dhi-aavai man liv laa-ay.
Rare is the Guru’s follower who reflects (on this reality), and focuses the mind on God with full concentration and devotion
Nadra ni mfuasi wa Guru anayetafakari (kuhusu uhalisia huu), na kumakinisha akili kwa Mungu kwa umakini na ujitoaji kamili.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੂਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥
kaho naanak doojai pahrai paraanee tis kaal na kabahooN khaa-ay. ||2||
Nanak says (such a person, who remembers God) in the second stage (of life),escapes death (and the circle of future births and deaths).
Nanak anasema (mtu kama huyo, anayemkumbuka Mungu) katika hatua ya pili (ya maisha) anahepa kifo (na mzunguko wa baadaye wa kuzaliwa na kufa).

ਤੀਜੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਕੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਲਗਾ ਆਲਿ ਜੰਜਾਲਿ ॥
teejai pahrai rain kai vanjaari-aa mitraa man lagaa aal janjaal.
O my merchant friend, in the third watch of the night-life, your mind is entangled in worldly and household affairs.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, katika mtazamo wa tatu wa usiku-maisha, akili yako inanaswa katika shughuli za kidunia na za nyumbani.

ਧਨੁ ਚਿਤਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਚਵੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਨ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Dhan chitvai Dhan sanchvai vanjaari-aa mitraa har naamaa har na samaal.
O’ my merchant friend, one think of wealth, and gather wealth, but do not enshrine God’s Name in the heart.
Ee rafiki wangu mchuuzi, mtu anafikiria utajiri, na kukusanya utajiri, lakini hathamini Jina la Mungu moyoni.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਸਮਾਲੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ॥
har naamaa har har kaday na samaalai je hovai ant sakhaa-ee.
One never contemplates God’s Name, which could be one’s only helper in the end.
Mtu kamwe hatafakari Jina la Mungu, ambalo lingeweza kuwa msaidizi wa pekee mwishowe.
