ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਕਾਜਲ ਕੋਠੜੀ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੇਹ ਸੁਆਹਿ ॥
sabh jag kaajal koth-rhee tan man dayh su-aahi.
This entire world is like a storehouse of black soot (full of vices). Because of worldly attachments, the body, mind and the conscience, all get polluted and become impure like the black soot.
Dunia mzima ni kama ghala ya masizi nyeusi (imejaa maovu). Kwa sababu ya viambatisho vya kidunia, mwili, akili na fahamu, yote yanachafuliwa na kuwa najisi kama masizi nyeusi.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥੭॥
gur raakhay say nirmalay sabad nivaaree bhaahi. ||7||
Those who are saved by the Guru, become pure. They get their fire of desire extinguished through the Word of the Guru.
Wale ambao wamekombolewa na Guru, wanakuwa safi. Moto wao wa hamu unazimwa kupitia Neno la Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁ ॥
naanak taree-ai sach naam sir saahaa paatisaahu.
O’ Nanak, they recite Naam and remember God with love, who is King of all the kings. Thus, they are able to swim across the world ocean.
Ee Nanak, wanakariri na kumkumbuka Mungu kwa upendo, ambaye ni mfalme wa wafalme wote. Kisha, wanaweza kuogelea wakivuka bahari dunia.

ਮੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥
mai har naam na veesrai har naam ratan vaysaahu.
May I never forget the Divine Naam, which is the jewel I have bought and is my real wealth.
Naomba nisiwahi kusahau Naam Takatifu, ambayo ni johari niliyonunua na ni utajiri wangu wa kweli.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਉਜਲਿ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੇ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥੮॥੧੬॥
manmukh bha-ojal pach mu-ay gurmukh taray athaahu. ||8||16||
The self-willed decay and die in the dreadful and bottomless world-ocean of vices but the Guru’s followers swim across.
Wenye wasia wa kibinafsi wanaoza na kufa katika bahari-dunia ya dhambi inayoogofya na isiyo na mwisho lakini wafuasi wa Guru wanaogelea na kuvuka.

ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਸਣਾ ਨਿਤ ਚਲਣੈ ਕੀ ਧੋਖ ॥
mukaam kar ghar baisnaa nit chalnai kee Dhokh.
We live in this world thinking that this is our permanent home even though, the fear to depart is always there.
Tunaishi duniani tukifikiria ya kwamba huku ni nyumbani kwetu daima hata kama, uoga wa kuondoka daima upo.

ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਤਾ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਲੋਕ ॥੧॥
mukaam taa par jaanee-ai jaa rahai nihchal lok. ||1||
This world could only be considered as one’s permanent abode if it were going to last forever.
Dunia hii ingeweza tu kufikiriwa kuwa makao daima iwapo ingedumu milele.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੈਸਿ ਮੁਕਾਮੇ ॥
dunee-aa kais mukaamay.
This world is not our permanent home.
Dunia hii sio nyumbani kwetu kwa kudumu.

ਕਰਿ ਸਿਦਕੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਖਰਚੁ ਬਾਧਹੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੁ ਨਾਮੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar sidak karnee kharach baaDhhu laag rahu naamay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Doing deeds of faith, pack up the supplies for your journey, and remain committed to the Name.
Ukifanya vitendo vya imani, panga vifaa vya safari yako, na ubaki umejitolea kwa Jina hilo.

ਜੋਗੀ ਤ ਆਸਣੁ ਕਰਿ ਬਹੈ ਮੁਲਾ ਬਹੈ ਮੁਕਾਮਿ ॥
jogee ta aasan kar bahai mulaa bahai mukaam.
The Yogis sit in their Yogic postures, and the Mullahs sit at their resting stations.
Yogi wanaketi katika mitindo yao ya Kiyogi, na Mullah wanakaa katika vituo vyao vya kupumzika.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਪੋਥੀਆ ਸਿਧ ਬਹਹਿ ਦੇਵ ਸਥਾਨਿ ॥੨॥
pandit vakaaneh pothee-aa siDh baheh dayv sathaan. ||2||
The Hindu Pandits recite from their books, and the Siddhas sit in the temples of their gods.
Walimu wa busara wa Wahindu wanakariri kutoka vitabu vyao, na Siddha wanakaa katika mahekalu ya miungu wao.

ਸੁਰ ਸਿਧ ਗਣ ਗੰਧਰਬ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੇਖ ਪੀਰ ਸਲਾਰ ॥
sur siDh gan ganDharab mun jan saykh peer salaar.
The angels, Siddhas, worshippers of Shiva, heavenly musicians, silent sages, Saints, priests, preachers, spiritual teachers and commanders,
Malaika, Siddha, waabudu wa Shiva, wanamuziki wa mbinguni, wahenga wanyamavu, watakatifu, makuhani, wahubiri, walimu wa kiroho na makamanda,

ਦਰਿ ਕੂਚ ਕੂਚਾ ਕਰਿ ਗਏ ਅਵਰੇ ਭਿ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ॥੩॥
dar kooch koochaa kar ga-ay avray bhe chalanhaar. ||3||
each and every one has left, and all others shall depart as well.
Kila mmoja wao ameondoka, na wengine wote wataondoka pia.

ਸੁਲਤਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਮਲੂਕ ਉਮਰੇ ਗਏ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੂਚੁ ॥
sultaan khaan malook umray ga-ay kar kar kooch.
The sultans and kings, the rich and the mighty, have marched away in succession.
Masultani na wafalme, matajiri na wenye nguvu, wameondoka mfululizo.

ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਦਿਲ ਸਮਝੁ ਤੂੰ ਭਿ ਪਹੂਚੁ ॥੪॥
gharhee muhat ke chalnaa dil samajh tooN bhe pahooch. ||4||
In a moment or two, we shall also depart. O my mind, understand that you must go as well!
Kwa kipindi kimoja au viwili, pia sisi tutaondoka. Ee akili yangu, elewa ya kwamba lazima uondoke pia!

ਸਬਦਾਹ ਮਾਹਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਤ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
sabdaah maahi vakhaanee-ai virlaa ta boojhai ko-ay.
It is often expressed by use of words that we all have to leave but rare is the one who truly realizes it.
Aghalabu inaelezwa kutumia maneno ya kwamba sote lazima tuondoke lakini ni nadra sana mtu kuigundua kwa kweli.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥
naanak vakhaanai bayntee jal thal mahee-al so-ay. ||5||
Nanak offers this prayer to the One who pervades the water, the land and the air.
Nanak anatoa sala hii kwa yule Mmoja anayeenea majini, ardhini na angani.

ਅਲਾਹੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਕਾਦਰੁ ਕਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਕਰੀਮੁ ॥
alaahu alakh agamm kaadar karanhaar kareem.
God, who is also called Allah, is unknowable, inaccessible, almighty and merciful creator of all the creation.
Mungu, ambaye pia anaitwa Allah, hawezi kujulikana, wala kufikiwa, ni mwenyezi na Muumba aliyeumba uumbaji wote mwenye huruma.

ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣੀ ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਰਹੀਮੁ ॥੬॥
sabh dunee aavan jaavnee mukaam ayk raheem. ||6||
All the world comes and goes; only the Merciful God is permanent.
Dunia nzima inakuja na kuenda; ni Mungu mwenye huruma pekee ambaye anadumu milele.

ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਸਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
mukaam tis no aakhee-ai jis sis na hovee laykh.
God alone can be called permanent home, who is not subject to any writ of destiny to perish or disappear.
Mungu pekee anaweza kuitwa nyumbani pa kudumu, ambaye hajatiishwa kwa maandishi yoyote ya hatima kuangamia au kupotolea.

ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ਧਰਤੀ ਚਲਸੀ ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਓਹੀ ਏਕੁ ॥੭॥
asmaan Dhartee chalsee mukaam ohee ayk. ||7||
The sky and the earth shall pass away; He alone is permanent.
Anga na dunia itapita; Yeye mwenyewe anadumu milele.

ਦਿਨ ਰਵਿ ਚਲੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਸਸਿ ਚਲੈ ਤਾਰਿਕਾ ਲਖ ਪਲੋਇ ॥
din rav chalai nis sas chalai taarikaa lakh palo-ay.
The day and the sun shall pass away; the night and the moon shall pass away; the hundreds of thousands of stars shall disappear.
Mchana na jua litapita; usiku na mwezi itapita, na mamia ya maelfu ya nyota zitapotea.

ਮੁਕਾਮੁ ਓਹੀ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਸਚੁ ਬੁਗੋਇ ॥੮॥੧੭॥
mukaam ohee ayk hai naankaa sach bugo-ay. ||8||17||
He alone is our permanent abode; Nanak speaks the Truth.
Yeye mwenyewe ni makao yetu ya kudumu; Nanak anazungumza Ukweli.

Mungu Mmoja. Anayegunduliwa kwa neema ya Guru:

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
gurmukh kirpaa karay bhagat keejai bin gur bhagat na ho-ay.
By the Guru’s Grace, one is able to practice devotion to God. Without the Grace of the Guru, devotional worship is not possible.
Kwa neema ya Guru, mtu anaweza kufanya ibada kwa Mungu. Bila Neema ya Guru, ibada ya kujitolea haiwezekani.

ਆਪੈ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
aapai aap milaa-ay boojhai taa nirmal hovai ko-ay.
One who merges his own self into Him by complete surrender, understands what true devotion is and thus becomes pure.
Yule anayeunganisha nafsi yake ndani mwa Mungu katika kujisalimu kikamilifu, anaelewa kujitolea kwa kweli ni nini na kisha anakuwa safi.

ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਚਾ ਸਚੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
har jee-o sachaa sachee banee sabad milaavaa ho-ay. ||1||
God is eternal and so is the Guru’s Word. Through the Guru’s Word, union with God is attained.
Mungu ni wa milele na hivyo ndivyo ilivyo Neno la Guru. Kupitia Neno la Guru, muungano na Mungu unapatikana.

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਗਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਕਾਹੇ ਜਗਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhaa-ee ray bhagtiheen kaahay jag aa-i-aa.
O’ brother, why did you even come into this world, if you were not going to worship God?
Ee ndugu, kwa nini hata ulikuja duniani humu, iwapo hukuwa unaenda kuabudu Mungu?

ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਕੀਨੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooray gur kee sayv na keenee birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
If you have not served the perfect Guru (have not meditated on the Almighty)then you have surely wasted your life.
Iwapo hujatumikia Guru kamili (hujatafakari kuhusu Mwenyezi) basi kwa kweli umeharibu maisha yako bure.

ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aapay har jagjeevan daataa aapay bakhas milaa-ay.
God Himself, the support of Life of the World, is the Giver. He Himself forgives, and unites us with Himself.
Mungu mwenyewe, nguzo ya Uhai duniani, ni Mtoaji. Yeye mwenyewe anasamehe, na kutuunganisha naye.

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਏ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jee-a jant ay ki-aa vaychaaray ki-aa ko aakh sunaa-ay.
Otherwise, these meek human beings cannot do or say anything.
La sivyo, binadamu hao wapole hawewezi kutenda au kufanya kitu chochote.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੨॥
gurmukh aapay day vadi-aa-ee aapay sayv karaa-ay. ||2||
It is God Himself who, through the Guru, grants a person the glory (of Naam) and thereby, instills His devotional service in such a person.
Ni Mungu mwenyewe ambaye, kupitia kwa Guru, anaruzuku mtu utukufu (wa Naam) na kwa hivyo, anaweka huduma yake ya kujitolea kwa mtu kama huyo.

ਦੇਖਿ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੋਭਾਣਾ ਚਲਦਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
daykh kutamb mohi lobhaanaa chaldi-aa naal na jaa-ee.
Beholding one’s family, one is fascinated by their emotional attachment. But they will not accompany when one departs from this world.
Akitazama familia yake, mtu anavutiwa na kiambatisho chao cha kihisia. Lakini wao hawataambatana na mtu anapoondoka kutoka dunia hii.
