ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪਣੇ ਧੀਆ ਪੂਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
manmukh jaanai aapnay Dhee-aa poot sanjog.
A self-willed person thinks his children as his own. He does not understand that these relations are formed according to God’s Will.
Mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anafikiria watoto wake kuwa wake mwenyewe. Haelewi kwamba uhusiano huo unaundwa kulingana na Mapenzi ya Mungu.

ਨਾਰੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਾਸੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਲੇ ਹਰਖੁ ਸੁ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
naaree daykh vigaasee-ah naalay harakh so sog.
He is elated upon seeing his wife and other relatives. But does not realize that these relations bring happiness as well as sorrow.
Anafurahi anapoona mke wake na jamaa wengine. Lakini hagundui kwamba uhusiano huu unaleta furaha na vilevile huzuni.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਰੰਗਾਵਲੇ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਭੋਗੁ ॥੩॥
gurmukh sabad rangaavlay ahinis har ras bhog. ||3||
Imbued to the Guru’s holy word, the Guru’s followers remain in bliss, and always enjoy the essence of Naam.
Wakipenyezwa na neno takatifu la Guru, wafuasi wa Guru wanasalia katika raha tele, na daima wanafurahia kiini cha Naam.

ਚਿਤੁ ਚਲੈ ਵਿਤੁ ਜਾਵਣੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਡੋਲਿ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
chit chalai vit jaavno saakat dol dolaa-ay.
When the self-conceited worshipper of power loses wealth, his mind is shaken.
Wakati mtu mwenye majivuno binafsi anayeabudu mamlaka anapoteza utajiri, akili yake inafadhaishwa.

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂੰਢਿ ਵਿਗੁਚੀਐ ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸੁਥਾਇ ॥
baahar dhoondh viguchee-ai ghar meh vasat suthaa-ay.
He suffers when he tries to find happiness outside. He does not realize that the main source of bliss, the Naam, is always present within.
Yeye anateseka anapojaribu kupata furaha nje. Hagundui kwamba chanzo kikuu cha raha tele, Naam, daima kipo ndani mwake.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਸੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥
manmukh ha-umai kar musee gurmukh palai paa-ay. ||4||
By indulging in ego, the self-conceited person is robbed of this wealth of Naam, but Guru’s follower easily gathers it.
Kwa kujihusisha katika ubinafsi, mtu mwenye hiari binafsi anaporwa utajiri huu wa Naam, lakini mfuasi wa Guru anaukusanya kwa urahisi.

ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਰਗੁਣਿਆਰਿਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
saakat nirguni-aari-aa aapnaa mool pachhaan.
O’ merit-less worshipper of worldly power recognize your true origin.
Ee mwabudu wa mamlaka ya kidunia usiye na ustahili, tambua asili yako ya kweli.

ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਨੋ ਅਗਨੀ ਪਾਸਿ ਪਿਰਾਣੁ ॥
rakat bind kaa ih tano agnee paas piraan.
This body is made of blood of mother and semen of father. It shall be consigned to the fire in the end.
Mwili huu umetengenezwa kwa damu ya mama na shahawa ya baba. Utatupwa motoni mwishowe.

ਪਵਣੈ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੇਹੁਰੀ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੫॥
pavnai kai vas dayhuree mastak sach neesaan. ||5||
The body is dependent on predestined number of breaths.
Mwili unategemea nambari za pumzi zilizoagiziwa mapema.

ਬਹੁਤਾ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮੰਗੀਐ ਮੁਆ ਨ ਲੋੜੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
bahutaa jeevan mangee-ai mu-aa na lorhai ko-ay.
Everyone begs for a long life-no one wishes to die sooner.
Kila mtu anaomba maisha marefu-hakuna mtu anatamani kufa hivi karibuni.

ਸੁਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
sukh jeevan tis aakhee-ai jis gurmukh vasi-aa so-ay.
But only that person’s life is considered truly happy in whose heart, through Guru’s grace, abides God.
Lakini maisha ya mtu huyo pekee yanafikiriwa kuwa yenye furaha ambaye moyoni mwake mnaishi Mungu, kwa neema ya Guru.

ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੇ ਕਿਆ ਗਣੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
naam vihoonay ki-aa ganee jis har gur daras na ho-ay. ||6||
How can you consider that person spiritually alive who is without Naam and who never gets to realize the presence of God.
Unawezaje kufikiria mtu huyo kuwa hai kiroho ambaye yu bila Naam na ambaye kamwe hapati kugundua uwepo wa Mungu.

ਜਿਉ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਭੁਲੀਐ ਜਬ ਲਗਿ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
ji-o supnai nis bhulee-ai jab lag nidraa ho-ay.
Just as one has misconception about the reality of things in the dream and this misconception is maintained as long as one is asleep,
Kama vile mtu ana dhana isiyo ya kweli kuhusu uhalisia wa vitu katika ndoto na dhana hii ya uongo inasali ili mradi mtu amelala,

ਇਉ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਕੈ ਵਸਿ ਜੀਅੜਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
i-o sarpan kai vas jee-arhaa antar ha-umai do-ay.
similarly under the influence of Maya (love for worldly riches), one remains in the grip of ego and duality.
Vivyo hivyo chini ya ushawishi wa Maya (upendo wa utajiri wa kidunia), mtu anabaki katika mshiko wa ubinafsi na uwili.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੭॥
gurmat ho-ay veechaaree-ai supnaa ih jag lo-ay. ||7||
Through the Guru’s Teachings, one comes to realize that this world is just a dream.
Kupitia Mafundisho ya Guru, mtu anakuja kugundua kwamba dunia hii ni kama tu ndoto.

ਅਗਨਿ ਮਰੈ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਦੂਧੈ ਮਾਇ ॥
agan marai jal paa-ee-ai ji-o baarik dooDhai maa-ay.
Just as baby’s hunger is satisfied with mother’s milk, similarly the fire of worldly desires is put out with the water of Naam.
Kama vile njaa ya mtoto inaridhishwa kwa maziwa ya mama, vivyo hivyo moto wa hamu za kidunia unazimwa na maji ya Naam.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਸੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮੀਨੁ ਮਰਾਇ ॥
bin jal kamal so naa thee-ai bin jal meen maraa-ay.
Just as the lotus does not exist without water, the fish dies without water.
Kama vile yungiyungi haiwezi kuwepo bila maji, na samaki anakufa bila maji.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੀਵਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
naanak gurmukh har ras milai jeevaa har gun gaa-ay. ||8||15||
Similarly, it is only through the Guru that the life giving elixir of God is obtained.Therefore I, Nanak, live happily by singing the praises of God.
Vivyo hivyo, ni kupitia kwa Guru peke yake ambapo dawa inayoleta uhai ya Mungu inapatwa. Hivyo basi mimi, Nanak, naishi kwa furaha kwa kuimba sifa za Mungu.

ਡੂੰਗਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰਾਵਣੋ ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਡਰੀਆਸੁ ॥
doongar daykh daraavno pay-ee-arhai daree-aas.
To reach a high spiritual state in life is like climbing a dreadful mountain, the human being becomes terrified looking at this path.
Kufikia hali ya juu ya kiroho maishani ni kama kupanda mlima unaotisha, binadamu anakuwa mwenye hofu anapoangalia njia hii.

ਊਚਉ ਪਰਬਤੁ ਗਾਖੜੋ ਨਾ ਪਉੜੀ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਾਸੁ ॥
oocha-o parbat gaakh-rho naa pa-orhee tit taas.
The human being does not have any means to climb this difficult mountain of spiritual path.
Binadamu hana mbinu yoyote ya kupanda mlima huu mgumu wa njia ya kiroho.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੀ ਤਰੀਆਸੁ ॥੧॥
gurmukh antar jaani-aa gur maylee taree-aas. ||1||
But then by the Guru’s blessing, I realized God dwelling within me. By the Guru’s teachings I crossed over the worldly ocean of vices and merged with God.
Lakini wakati huo kwa baraka ya Guru, niligundua Mungu akiishi ndani mwangu. Kwa mafundisho ya Guru nilivuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi na kuungana na Mungu.

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਡਰਾਂਉ ॥
bhaa-ee ray bhavjal bikham daraan-o.
O’ brother, the dreadful world-ocean of vices is difficult to cross.
Ee ndugu, bahari-dunia hii inayoogofya ya dhambi ni ngumu kuvuka.

ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਰਸਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
pooraa satgur ras milai gur taaray har naa-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
If a perfect Guru, in his pleasure, meets someone. Then the Guru ferries that person across, by blessing him with God’s Name.
Iwapo Guru kamili, kwa mapenzi yake, akutane na mtu. Basi Guru anamvukisha mtu huyo, kwa kumbariki na Jina la Mungu.

ਚਲਾ ਚਲਾ ਜੇ ਕਰੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
chalaa chalaa jay karee jaanaa chalanhaar.
If I always remember that I have to depart from this world and if I understand that everyone has to depart.
Iwapo daima nikumbuke kwamba lazima niondoke kutoka kwa dunia hii na iwapo nielewe kwamba kila mtu lazima aondoke.

ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਚਲਸੀ ਅਮਰੁ ਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥
jo aa-i-aa so chalsee amar so gur kartaar.
Whoever is born must also die. Only the Guru and the Creator are Eternal.
Yeyote anayezaliwa lazima pia afe. Ni Guru na Muumba peke yao ambao ni wa Milele.

ਭੀ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਸਚੈ ਥਾਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥
bhee sachaa salaahnaa sachai thaan pi-aar. ||2||
So one must praise God with love and devotion in the holy congregation.
Basi mtu lazima asifu Mungu kwa upendo na ujitoaji katika ushirika mtakatifu.

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਪਕੇ ਕੋਟ ਹਜਾਰ ॥
dar ghar mehlaa sohnay pakay kot hajaar.
Beautiful gateways, houses and palaces, solidly built forts,
Malanga mazuri, nyumba na majumba, ngome nzuri zilizojengwa kwa uthabiti,

ਹਸਤੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਪਾਖਰੇ ਲਸਕਰ ਲਖ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
hastee ghorhay paakhray laskar lakh apaar.
elephants, saddled horses, hundreds of thousands of uncounted armies,
tembo, farasi wenye matandiko, mamia ya maelfu ya majeshi yasiyohesabika,

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮੁਏ ਅਸਾਰ ॥੩॥
kis hee naal na chali-aa khap khap mu-ay asaar. ||3||
none of these will go along in the end, and yet many ignorant people have exhausted themselves and spiritually die in their pursuit for worldly things.
Hakuna kati ya haya yataambatana na mtu mwishowe, na bado watu wengi wajinga wamejichosha na wanakufa kiroho katika harakati yao ya vitu vya kidunia.

ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸੰਚੀਐ ਮਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ॥
su-inaa rupaa sanchee-ai maal jaal janjaal.
One may gather gold and silver, but wealth is just a net of entanglement.
Mtu anaweza kukusanya dhahabu na fedha, lakini utajiri ni wavu wa mnaso tu.

ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਦੋਹੀ ਫੇਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਲੁ ॥
sabh jag meh dohee fayree-ai bin naavai sir kaal.
One may beat the drum and proclaim authority over the whole world, but without the Naam, fear of death hovers over the head.
Mtu anaweza kupiga ngoma na kutangaza mamlaka juu ya dunia nzima, lakini bila Naam, hofu ya kifo inaning’inia juu ya kichwa.

ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਜੀਉ ਖੇਲਸੀ ਬਦਫੈਲੀ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੪॥
pind parhai jee-o khaylsee badfailee ki-aa haal. ||4||
When the life’s play is over, the body falls down dead, what shall be the condition of the evil doers then?
Wakati mchezo wa maisha umekwisha, mwili unaanguka na kufa, ni ipi itakuwa hali ya watenda uovu wakati huo?

ਪੁਤਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਵਿਗਸੀਐ ਨਾਰੀ ਸੇਜ ਭਤਾਰ ॥
putaa daykh vigsee-ai naaree sayj bhataar.
A person is delighted in the company of his sons and wife.
Mtu anafurahia katika uandamano wa wana wake na mkewe.

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਕਾਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥
cho-aa chandan laa-ee-ai kaaparh roop seegaar.
He decks himself with beautiful clothes and apply all kinds of perfumes,
Anajipamba na mavazi mazuri na kupaka aina zote za manukato.

ਖੇਹੂ ਖੇਹ ਰਲਾਈਐ ਛੋਡਿ ਚਲੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ॥੫॥
khayhoo khayh ralaa-ee-ai chhod chalai ghar baar. ||5||
but ultimately dust (dead body) mingles with dust, and soul departs from the world leaving all worldly possessions behind.
Lakini mwishowe mchanga (maiti) unachanganyana na mchanga, na roho inaondoka kutoka duniani ikiacha nyuma mali yote ya kidunia.

ਮਹਰ ਮਲੂਕ ਕਹਾਈਐ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਉ ਕਿ ਖਾਨੁ ॥
mahar malook kahaa-ee-ai raajaa raa-o ke khaan.
He may be called a chief, an emperor, a king, a governor or a lord;
Yeye anaweza kuitwa chifu, milki, mfalme, gavana au bwana;

ਚਉਧਰੀ ਰਾਉ ਸਦਾਈਐ ਜਲਿ ਬਲੀਐ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ॥
cha-uDhree raa-o sadaa-ee-ai jal balee-ai abhimaan.
he may present himself as a leader or a chief, but this just burns him in the fire of egotistical pride.
Anaweza kujiwasilisha kama kiongozi au chifu, lakini hii tu inamchoma katika moto wa fahari ya ubinafsi.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਉ ਡਵਿ ਦਧਾ ਕਾਨੁ ॥੬॥
manmukh naam visaari-aa ji-o dav daDhaa kaan. ||6||
But in spite of all these possessions, the self-willed who has forsaken the Naam, is like a straw burnt in the forest fire.
Lakini licha ya mali hii yote, mtu mwenye hiari binafsi ambaye ameacha Naam, ni kama unyasi uliochomwa katika moto nyikani.

ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਸੀ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਜਗ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
ha-umai kar kar jaa-isee jo aa-i-aa jag maahi.
Whosoever has come into the world, (without meditation on God’s Name)will depart from here obsessed with self-conceit.
Yeyote ambaye amekuja duniani humu, (bila kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu) ataondoka kutoka humu akihangaikia majivuno binafsi.
