ਖੁੰਢਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਰਖਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਮਲ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
khundhaa andar rakh kai dayn so mal sajaa-ay.
Then placing it between the wooden rollers of the crusher, the farmers crush it (as if they are punishing it) and extract the juice.
Kisha akuiweka katikati ya viviringisho vya mbao vya kifaa cha kuponda, wakulima wanaiponda (kana kwamba wanauadhibu) na kudondoa jusi.

ਰਸੁ ਕਸੁ ਟਟਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਪੈ ਤੈ ਵਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
ras kas tatar paa-ee-ai tapai tai villaa-ay.
The juice is placed and heated in the cauldron; as it is heated, it hisses as if it is crying in pain.
Jusi inawekwa na kupashwa joto kwenye pipa; inavyopashwa joto, inachata kana kwamba inalia kwa uchungu.

ਭੀ ਸੋ ਫੋਗੁ ਸਮਾਲੀਐ ਦਿਚੈ ਅਗਿ ਜਾਲਾਇ ॥
bhee so fog samaalee-ai dichai ag jaalaa-ay
And even the empty leftovers of the sugarcane are saved to be put into fire.
Na hata mabaki tupu ya miwa wanahifadhiwa ili yawekwe motoni.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਠੈ ਪਤਰੀਐ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
naanak mithai patree-ai vaykhhu lokaa aa-ay. ||2||
Nanak says, o’ people come and see, how the sugar-cane has to go through sufferings because of sweetness. Similarly, one has to go through a lot ofsufferings due to the love for worldly riches.
Nanak asema, Ee watu kujeni muone, jinsi muwa unapitia mateso kutokana na utamu. Sawia, mtu anapaswa kupitia mateso mengi kutokana na upendo wa utajiri wa kidunia.

Pauree:

ਇਕਨਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਸ ਘਣੇਰਿਆ ॥
iknaa maran na chit aas ghanayri-aa.
Some do not think of death; they entertain many kinds of great hopes.
Wengine hawafikirii kuhusu kifo; wanawaza aina nyingi ya matumaini makuu.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰਿਆ ॥
mar mar jameh nit kisai na kayri-aa.
They die, over and over again (go through the cycles of sorrow and comfort). They are of no use to anyone.
Wanakufa, tena na tena (kupitia mizunguko ya kuzuni na starehe). Hawana manufaa yoyote kwa mtu yeyote.

ਆਪਨੜੈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਕਹਨਿ ਚੰਗੇਰਿਆ ॥
aapnarhai man chit kahan changayri-aa.
In their own minds, they think highly of themselves.
Kwa akili zao, wanajifikiria kuwa wakuu.

ਜਮਰਾਜੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੇਰਿਆ ॥
jamraajai nit nit manmukh hayri-aa.
but, the demon of death always hunts down those self-willed people.
Lakini pepo wa kifo daima anawinda hao watu wenye hiari binafsi.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੂਣ ਹਾਰਾਮ ਕਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
manmukh loon haaraam ki-aa na jaani-aa.
These self-willed people are so ungrateful that they do not realize what favours God has bestowed on them.
Hao watu wenye hiari binafsi hawana shukrani hadi hawagundui fadhila ambazo Mungu ametawaza kwao.

ਬਧੇ ਕਰਨਿ ਸਲਾਮ ਖਸਮ ਨ ਭਾਣਿਆ ॥
baDhay karan salaam khasam na bhaani-aa.
Those who merely perform rituals of worship are not pleasing to their Master.
Wale ambao wanafanya mila za ibada tu hawapendezi kwa Bwana wao.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥
sach milai mukh naam saahib bhaavsee.
Only that person will realize God, who recites His Name with love, which is pleasing to God.
Mtu huyo pekee atagundua Mungu, ambaye anakariri Jina lake kwa upendo, ambako kunampendeza Mungu.

ਕਰਸਨਿ ਤਖਤਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸੀ ॥੧੧॥
karsan takhat salaam likhi-aa paavsee. ||11||
Such a person is honored, and he realizes his pre-ordained destiny.
Mtu kama huyo anaheshimika, na anagundua hatima yake iliyoagiziwa mapema.

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਮਛੀ ਤਾਰੂ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਪੰਖੀ ਕਿਆ ਆਕਾਸੁ ॥
machhee taaroo ki-aa karay pankhee ki-aa aakaas.
What use is the deep sea to the fish, and of what use is the vast sky to a bird? They are more concerned with their food.
Bahari yenye kina ina manufaa gani kwa samaki, na anga pana ina manufaa gani kwa ndege? Wana wasiwasi zaidi kuhusu chakula chao.

ਪਥਰ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਸਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
pathar paalaa ki-aa karay khusray ki-aa ghar vaas.
any amount of cold does not bother a stone, and for a eunuch residence in a home is of no consequence.
Kiasi chochote cha baridi hakisumbui jiwe, na kwa towashi kuishi katika nyumba hakuna umuhimu wowote.

ਕੁਤੇ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਲਾਈਐ ਭੀ ਸੋ ਕੁਤੀ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
kutay chandan laa-ee-ai bhee so kutee Dhaat.
If we apply sandalwood oil to a dog, its nature still remains that of a dog.
Iwapo tupake mafuta ya misandali kwa mbwa, silika yake bado itabaki kuwa ile ya mbwa.

ਬੋਲਾ ਜੇ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਪਾਠ ॥
bolaa jay samjaa-ee-ai parhee-ah simrit paath.
If we try to instruct a deaf person by reading the smritis (holy books), he will not understand.
Iwapo tujaribu kufunza kiziwi kwa kusoma Smiritis (vitabu takatifu), yeye hataelewa.

ਅੰਧਾ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਦੀਵੇ ਬਲਹਿ ਪਚਾਸ ॥
anDhaa chaanan rakhee-ai deevay baleh pachaas.
We may put a blind man in the light of fifty lamps, still he will not be able to see.
Tunaweza kuweka kipofu katika mwanga wa taa hamsini, bado yeye hataweza kuona.

ਚਉਣੇ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਚੁਣਿ ਚੁਣਿ ਖਾਵੈ ਘਾਸੁ ॥
cha-unay su-inaa paa-ee-ai chun chun khaavai ghaas.
We may place gold before a herd of cattle, but they will pick out the grass to eat.
Tunaweza kuweka dhahabu mbele ya kundi la ng’ombe, lakini bado watachagua nyasi ili kula.

ਲੋਹਾ ਮਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਢਹੈ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਕਪਾਸ ॥
lohaa maaran paa-ee-ai dhahai na ho-ay kapaas.
We may add flux to iron and melt it, still it will not become soft like cotton.
Tunaweza kuongeza tindikali kwa chuma na kuiyeyusha, bado haitakuwa laini kama pamba.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖ ਏਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
naanak moorakh ayhi gun bolay sadaa vinaas.||1||
Similarly, O’ Nanak, this is the nature of a foolish person, that whenever he speaks, it always does harm to others.
Sawia, Ee Nanak, hiyo ndiyo hali ya mtu mpumbavu, ya kwamba wakati wowote anapozungumza, daima inadhuru wengine.

Shalok, by the First Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਕੈਹਾ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
kaihaa kanchan tutai saar.
If a piece of bronze or gold or iron breaks ,
Iwapo sehemu ya shaba ama dhahabu ama chuma ivunjike,

ਅਗਨੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਏ ਲੋਹਾਰੁ ॥
agnee gandh paa-ay lohaar.
the blacksmith welds it together by putting it in the fire.
Mhunzi anaichomelea na kuiunganisha kwa kuiweka motoni.

ਗੋਰੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਤੁਟੈ ਭਤਾਰੁ ॥
goree saytee tutai bhataar.
If husband and wife are separated,
Iwapo mume na mke wametenganishwa,

ਪੁਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
puteeN gandh pavai sansaar
they remain united in the eyes of the world because of their children.
Wanabaki wameungana machoni pa dunia kwa sababu ya watoto wao.

ਰਾਜਾ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਿਤੈ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
raajaa mangai ditai gandh paa-ay.
When the king asks for taxes, it is only by paying that tax that anyone can maintain relationship with the king.
Wakati mfalme anaulizia ushuru, ni kwa kulipa ushuru huo pekee ambapo mtu yeyote anaweza kuhifadhi uhusiano na mfalme.

ਭੁਖਿਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
bhukhi-aa gandh pavai jaa khaa-ay.
The relationship with hungry persons develops when one gives them something to eat.
Uhusiano na walio na njaa unaendelezwa wakati mtu anawapa chakula.

ਕਾਲਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਨਦੀਆ ਮੀਹ ਝੋਲ ॥
kaalaa gandh nadee-aa meeh jhol.
The famines end, when the rain fills the streams to overflowing.
Ukame unakwisha, wakati mvua unajaza chemichemi hadi inafurika.

ਗੰਢੁ ਪਰੀਤੀ ਮਿਠੇ ਬੋਲ ॥
gandh pareetee mithay bol.
There is a bond between love and sweet words.
Kuna uhusiano kati ya upendo na maneno matamu.

ਬੇਦਾ ਗੰਢੁ ਬੋਲੇ ਸਚੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
baydaa gandh bolay sach ko-ay.
A bond is established with the Holy Scriptures. only when one speaks the Truth.
Uhusiano unaanzishwa na Maandishi Takatifu, wakati tu mtu anazungumza Ukweli.

ਮੁਇਆ ਗੰਢੁ ਨੇਕੀ ਸਤੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
mu-i-aa gandh naykee sat ho-ay.
Through their goodness and truth, the dead persons are remembered and their relationship with the world continues.
Kupitia uzuri na ukweli wao, wafu wanakumbukwa na uhusiano wao na dunia unaendelea.

ਏਤੁ ਗੰਢਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
ayt gandh vartai sansaar.
Such are the bonds which prevail in the world.
Uhusiano kama huo ndio unaodumu duniani.

ਮੂਰਖ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਮਾਰ ॥
moorakh gandh pavai muhi maar.
The fool mends himself, only when he receives some punishment.
Mpumbavu anajirekebisha, wakati tu anapokea adhabu fulani.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
naanak aakhai ayhu beechaar.
Nanak says this after deep reflection:
Nanak anasema hivi baada ya kutafakari kwa kina:

ਸਿਫਤੀ ਗੰਢੁ ਪਵੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
siftee gandh pavai darbaar.||2||
that it is God’s praise that unites us with His court.
Ya kwamba ni sifa za Mungu zinazotuunganisha na mahakama yake.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ਆਪੇ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
aapay kudrat saaj kai aapay karay beechaar.
After creating the universe, He Himself reflects upon its needs.
Baada ya kuumba ulimwengu, Yeye mwenyewe anatafakari kuhusu mahitaji yake.

ਇਕਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਇਕਿ ਖਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਪਰਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
ik khotay ik kharay aapay parkhanhaar.
There are some who are bad, like counterfeit coins, and some are good like genuine coins. He Himself is the examiner of these good and bad people.
Kuna wengine ambao ni wabaya, kama sarafu bandia, na wengine ni wazuri kama sarafu halisi. Yeye mwenyewe ndiye mchunguzi wa watu hao wazuri na wabaya.

ਖਰੇ ਖਜਾਨੈ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਖੋਟੇ ਸਟੀਅਹਿ ਬਾਹਰ ਵਾਰਿ ॥
kharay khajaanai paa-ee-ah khotay satee-ah baahar vaar.
The good people are accepted in His court and the bad people are thrown away.
Watu wazuri wanakubalika katika mahakama yake ilhali watu wabaya wanatupwa nje.

ਖੋਟੇ ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੁਟੀਅਹਿ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰ ॥
khotay sachee dargeh sutee-ah kis aagai karahi pukaar.
The bad people, who are thrown out of His court, who should they beg for help?
Watu hao wabaya, ambao wanarushwa nje ya mahakama yake, wanafaa kumwomba nani usaidizi?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਛੈ ਭਜਿ ਪਵਹਿ ਏਹਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
satgur pichhai bhaj paveh ayhaa karnee saar.
The best thing for them is, to immediately seek the shelter of the true Guru.
Chaguo lao nzuri kabisa ni, kutafuta kificho cha Guru wa kweli mara moja.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਖੋਟਿਅਹੁ ਖਰੇ ਕਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
satgur khoti-ahu kharay karay sabad savaaranhaar.
The True Guru reforms bad people into good people, because the Guru is capable of purifying them through his word .
Guru wa Kweli anarekebisha watu wabaya wawe wazuri, kwa sababu Guru ana uweza wa kuwatakasa kupitia neno lake.

ਸਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਮੰਨੀਅਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
sachee dargeh mannee-an gur kai paraym pi-aar.
Those who have enshrined love and affection for the Guru, are honored in God’s court.
Wale ambao wamethamini upendo na mapenzi kwa Guru, wanaheshimika katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਗਣਤ ਤਿਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਜੋ ਆਪਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਿ ॥੧੨॥
ganat tinaa dee ko ki-aa karay jo aap bakhsay kartaar. ||12||
No one can count the merits or demerits of those, whom the Creator Himself has forgiven.
Hakuna mtu anaweza kuhesabu sifa au mapungufu ya wale, ambao Muumba mwenyewe amesamehe.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਹਮ ਜੇਰ ਜਿਮੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਪੀਰਾ ਮਸਾਇਕਾ ਰਾਇਆ ॥
ham jayr jimee dunee-aa peeraa masaa-ikaa raa-i-aa.
Peers (Muslim saints), Sheikhs and Chiefs of the entire world will be buried under the earth.
Warika (watakatifu Waislamu), Mashehe na Watemi wa dunia nzima watazikwa chini ya ardhi.

ਏਕ ਤੂਹੀ ਏਕ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੧॥
ayk toohee ayk tuhee. ||1||
Yes O’ God, You and only You are forever.
Ndio Ee Mungu, Wewe na Wewe pekee ndiwe wa milele.

ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਨ ਦੇਵ ਦਾਨਵਾ ਨਰਾ ॥
na dayv daanvaa naraa.
Neither the angels, nor the demons, nor human beings,
Sio malaika, wala mapepo, wala binadamu,

ਨ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਧਰਾ ॥
na siDh saaDhikaa Dharaa.
nor the Siddhas, nor the seekers have remained forever on the earth.
Wala Siddhas, wala watafuta wamebaki duniani milele.

ਅਸਤਿ ਏਕ ਦਿਗਰਿ ਕੁਈ ॥
asat ayk digar ku-ee.
O’ God, except You, who else is there forever?
Ee Mungu, isipokuwa Wewe, nani mwengine yupo milele?
