Shalok, Fifth Guru:
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
amrit banee ami-o ras amrit har kaa naa-o.
The Guru’s divine worlds are rejuvenating and relishing like nectar and God’s Name is also the ambrosial nectar.
ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਲ ਹੈ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸੁਆਦ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਹੈ।
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥
man tan hirdai simar har aath pahar gun gaa-o.
O’ brother, remember God’s Name with full concentration of mind, body and heart and always sing His praises.
ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ-ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ, ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਸਿਮਰੋ ਤੇ ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰੋ।
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
updays sunhu tum gursikhahu sachaa ihai su-aa-o.
O’ disciples of the Guru, listen to the Guru’s teachings about singing God’s praises, this alone is the true purpose of human life.
ਹੇ ਗੁਰ-ਸਿੱਖੋ! (ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਾਲਾ ਇਹ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਸੁਣੋ, ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਅਸਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ।
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਇਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥
janam padaarath safal ho-ay man meh laa-ihu bhaa-o.
Imbue your mind with love for God, so that the purpose of this precious human life is accomplished.
ਮਨ ਵਿਚ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ) ਪਿਆਰ ਟਿਕਾਓ, ਤਾਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜੀਵਨ-ਰੂਪ ਕੀਮਤੀ ਦਾਤ ਸਫਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ।
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨਦੁ ਘਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
sookh sahj aanad ghanaa parabh japti-aa dukh jaa-ay.
All the suffering vanishes and one receives immense peace, poise and bliss by remembering God with adoration.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੁਖ, ਆਤਮਕ ਅਡੋਲਤਾ ਤੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥
naanak naam japat sukh oopjai dargeh paa-ee-ai thaa-o. ||1||
O’ Nanak, by meditating on God’s Name, peace wells up in the mind and one gets a place in His presence. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਿਆਂ (ਇਸ ਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ) ਸੁਖ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਹਜ਼ੂਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਥਾਂ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
naanak naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai gur pooraa mat day-ay.
O’ Nanak, the perfect Guru teaches us that we should meditate on Naam.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ (ਤਾਂ ਇਹ) ਮੱਤ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਭਾਣੈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਇ ॥
bhaanai jap tap sanjamo bhaanai hee kadh lay-ay.
but it is by God’s will that one practises ritualistic meditation, penance, and self-discipline; it is also by His pleasure that He ousts one out of these rituals.
ਪਰ ਉਂਞ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ (ਕਰਮ-ਕਾਂਡ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਢ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
bhaanai jon bhavaa-ee-ai bhaanai bakhas karay-i.
It is under God’s will that a person wanders through incarnations and in His will, He forgives one and ends his wandering in births.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੂਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵ ਉਤੇ) ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਣੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੋਗੀਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
bhaanai dukh sukh bhogee-ai bhaanai karam karay-i.
In His will, the being experiences pain and pleasure and in His will, God bestows mercy.
ਉਸ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ) ਦੁੱਖ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਉਤੇ) ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਣੈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥
bhaanai mitee saaj kai bhaanai jot Dharay-ay.
After fashioning the body, God in His will infuses life in it.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਰੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਜਿੰਦ ਪਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਭਾਣੈ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਾਇਦਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥
bhaanai bhog bhogaa-idaa bhaanai maneh karay-i.
God Himself inspires people to enjoy worldly pleasures, and in His will He forbids them from indulging into these pleasures.
ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਭੋਗਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਰੋਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਣੈ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਉਤਾਰੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਧਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਇ ॥
bhaanai narak surag a-utaaray bhaanai Dharan paray-ay.
God by His will put someone through sufferings like hell and let others to enjoy heavenly pleasures; it is by God’s will that someone is completely ruined.
ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਰਕ ਵਿਚ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਗ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
bhaanai hee jis bhagtee laa-ay naanak virlay hay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, rare are those whom in His will, God commits to His devotional worship. ||2||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਜਿਹੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨॥

Pauree:
ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣੇ ॥
vadi-aa-ee sachay naam kee ha-o jeevaa sun sunay.
O’ my friend, I feel spiritually rejuvenated by listening again and again to the glory of God’s Name.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਸੱਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਾਂ (ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤੇ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਿੰਦ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਖਣੇ ॥
pasoo parayt agi-aan uDhaaray ik khanay.
In an instant, God liberates people who are spiritually ignorant and also people with behaviour like that of animals and demons.
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਪਸ਼ੂ-ਸੁਭਾਵ, ਪ੍ਰੇਤ-ਸੁਭਾਵ ਤੇ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥
dinas rain tayraa naa-o sadaa sad jaapee-ai.
O’ God, bless us that we may always keep meditating on Your Name,
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਸਦਾ ਹੀ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਰਹੀਏ,
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੀਐ ॥
tarisnaa bhukh vikraal naa-ay tayrai Dharaapee-ai.
because the dreadful craving for worldly riches and power is satiated by lovingly remembering Your Name.
ਤੇਰੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੀਂ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ) ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਤ੍ਰੇਹ ਮਿਟ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਰੋਗੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵੰਞੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥
rog sog dukh vanjai jis naa-o man vasai.
A person in whose heart is enshrined the Name of God, his afflictions of vices, anxiety and sorrow go away.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਵਿਕਾਰ-) ਰੋਗ ਸਹਸਾ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਾਲੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੈ ॥
tiseh paraapat laal jo gur sabdee rasai.
However, only that person receives this jewel like Naam, who joyfully recites the Guru’s word.
ਪਰ ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਹੀਰਾ ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਹਾਸਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਰਚ-ਮਿਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥
khand barahmand bay-ant uDhaaranhaari-aa.
O’ the savior of limitless beings in all continents and universe,
ਹੇ ਖੰਡਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!
ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੧੨॥
tayree sobhaa tuDh sachay mayray pi-aari-aa. ||12||
O’ my eternal beloved God, Your glory befits You alone. ||12||
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ! ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਫਬਦੀ ਹੈ ॥੧੨॥

Shalok, Fifth Guru:
ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਕਸੁੰਭੈ ਭੁਲੀ ॥
mitar pi-aaraa naanak jee mai chhad gavaa-i-aa rang kasumbhai bhulee.
O’ dear Nanak, misled by the illusion of worldly wealth, which is like the fast fading color of safflower, I abandoned my dearest friend God.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ! ਮੈ ਕਸੁੰਭੇ (ਵਰਗੀ ਮਾਇਆ) ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਉਕਾਈ ਖਾ ਗਈ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮਿੱਤਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ ਗੰਵਾ ਬੈਠੀ।
ਤਉ ਸਜਣ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਉਦੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਢੁ ਨ ਲਹਦੀ ॥੧॥
ta-o sajan kee mai keem na pa-udee ha-o tuDh bin adh na lahdee. ||1||
O’ my beloved God! I could not estimate Your worth and without You I am not worth even a penny ||1||
ਹੇ ਸੱਜਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਇਸ ਉਕਾਈ ਵਿਚ) ਮੈਥੋਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਕਦਰ ਨਾਹ ਪੈ ਸਕੀ, ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਭੀ ਮੈਂ ਅੱਧੀ ਦਮੜੀ ਦੀ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਸਸੁ ਵਿਰਾਇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਸਸੁਰਾ ਵਾਦੀ ਜੇਠੋ ਪਉ ਪਉ ਲੂਹੈ ॥
sas viraa-in naanak jee-o sasuraa vaadee jaytho pa-o pa-o loo hai.
O’ Nanak, spiritual ignorance, like a mother-in-law, has become my enemy, love for my body, like a father-in-law, creates problems and fear of death, like a brother-in-law, tortures me again and again.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਅਵਿੱਦਿਆ (ਜੀਵ-ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦੀ) ਵੈਰਨ ਹੈ, ਸਰੀਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ (ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਣਾ ਲਈ ਨਿੱਤ) ਝਗੜਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਖਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ), ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਦੁਖੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਭੇ ਭਸੁ ਪੁਣੇਦੇ ਵਤਨੁ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਸਜਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ॥੨॥
habhay bhas punayday vatan jaa mai sajan toohai. ||2||
But O’ God, as long as You are my friend, I don’t care for them at all. ||2||
ਪਰ, (ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੋਵੇਂ , ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਬੇਸ਼ਕ ਖੇਹ ਛਾਣਦੇ ਫਿਰਨ (ਭਾਵ,ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀ ) ॥੨॥
ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੋ ॥
jis too vuthaa chit tis darad nivaarno.
O’ God, You relieve all the suffering of the one in whose mind You manifest.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਦੁੱਖ-ਦਰਦ ਤੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹਾਰਣੋ ॥
jis too vuthaa chit tis kaday na haarno.
A person in whose mind You are enshrined, never loses the game of human life.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰ ਵੱਸ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ, ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਕਦੇ ਹਾਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਣੋ ॥
jis mili-aa pooraa guroo so sarpar taarno.
One who meets the perfect Guru, is sure to be ferried across the worldly ocean of vices.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, (ਗੁਰੂ) ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ (ਸੰਸਾਰ-ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ) ਬਚਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਲਣੋ ॥
jis no laa-ay sach tis sach samHaalano.
One whom the Guru unites with God, he always cherishes God in his mind.
ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚੇ ਹਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਦਾ ਹਰੀ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਸੰਭਾਲ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇਆ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਾਲਣੋ ॥
jis aa-i-aa hath niDhaan so rahi-aa bhaalno.
One who receives the treasure of Naam, stops searching for worldly riches.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ-ਖ਼ਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਭਟਕਣਾ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਇਕੋ ਰੰਗੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਣੋ ॥
jis no iko rang bhagat so jaanno.
One who is imbued with God’s love, should be considered His devotee.
ਉਸੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਤ ਸਮਝੋ ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਪਿਆਰ ਹੈ।
ਓਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਚਾਰਣੋ ॥
oh sabhnaa kee rayn birhee chaarno.
Such a lover of God’s Name remains so humble as if he is the dust of everybody’s feet.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ (ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਰਣੋ ॥੧੩॥
sabh tayray choj vidaan sabh tayraa kaarno. ||13||
O’ God, all this is Your wonderful play caused by You. ||13||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਹੀ ਅਚਰਜ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਹਨ, ਇਹ ਸਾਰਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਖੇਲ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥

Shalok, Fifth Guru:
ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਭ ਵਞਾਈ ਛੋੜਿਆ ਹਭੁ ਕਿਝੁ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
ustat nindaa naanak jee mai habh vanjaa-ee chhorhi-aa habh kijh ti-aagee.
O’ Nanak, I have forsaken all praise or slander of anybody, and have also renounced all other worldly involvements.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗਾ ਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਣਾ-ਇਹ ਮੈਂ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਸਭ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਭੇ ਸਾਕ ਕੂੜਾਵੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਤਉ ਪਲੈ ਤੈਡੈ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
habhay saak koorhaavay dithay ta-o palai taidai laagee. ||1||
O’ God, I have realized that all worldly relations are false (temoporary), therefore, I have come to your refuge. ||1||
ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਕ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ ( ਕੋਈ ਤੋੜ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਹੀਂ), ਇਸ ਲਈ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਲੜ ਆ ਲੱਗੀ ਹਾਂ ॥੧॥

Fifth Guru:
ਫਿਰਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਹਉ ਫਾਵੀ ਥੀਈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਸਾਵਰ ਪੰਧਾ ॥
firdee firdee naanak jee-o ha-o faavee thee-ee bahut disaavar panDhaa.
O’ Nanak, I was completely exhausted and disappointed wandering around in many distant lands.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਮੈਂ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਭਟਕਦੀ ਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਦੇਸਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੈਂਡੇ ਝਾਗਦੀ ਝਾਗਦੀ ਪਾਗਲ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਸਾਂ।
ਤਾ ਹਉ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈ ਲਧਾ ॥੨॥
taa ha-o sukh sukhaalee sutee jaa gur mil sajan mai laDhaa. ||2||
When I met the Guru and realized my beloved God, only then I slept peacefully and enjoyed the perfect bliss. ||2||
ਜਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਜਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਲੱਭ ਪਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਬੜੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਸੌਂ ਗਈ ( ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਤਮਕ ਆਨੰਦ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ) ॥੨॥
