ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gurmatee jam johi na saakai saachai naam samaa-i-aa.
Even the demon (fear) of death cannot touch them because they are absorbed in God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings.
Hata pepo (uoga) wa kifo hawezi kuwagusa kwa sababu wameunganishwa na Jina la Mungu kupitia mafundisho ya Guru.

ਸਭੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਜੋ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਇ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
sabh aapay aap vartai kartaa jo bhaavai so naa-ay laa-i-aa.
The creator Himself is all-pervading, with whomsoever He is pleased, He attaches that person to Naam.
Muumba mwenyewe anaenea kote, na yeyote anayempendeza Mungu, Yeye anaunganisha mtu huyo kwa Naam.

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਏ ਤਾ ਜੀਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਖਿਨੁ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
Jan nanak Naam la-ay taa jeevai bin naavai khin mar jaa-i-aa ll2ll
Nanak feels spiritually alive and happy when he dwells on God’s Name. Without meditating on Naam even for a moment, he feels utterly sad as if he has died.
Nanak anahisi yu hai kiroho na mwenye furaha anapoishi katika Jina la Mungu. Bila kutafakari kuhusu Naam hata kwa muda mfupi, anahisi kusikitika mno kana kwamba amekufa.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਜੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਬਾਣ ਸਿਉ ਸੋ ਸਭਨੀ ਦੀਬਾਣੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥
jo mili-aa har deebaan si-o so sabhnee deebaanee mili-aa.
One who is accepted at God’s court shall be accepted in courts everywhere.
Yule ambaye anakubalika katika mahakama ya Mungu pia atakubalika katika mahakama kila mahali.

ਜਿਥੈ ਓਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਤਿਥੈ ਓਹੁ ਸੁਰਖਰੂ ਉਸ ਕੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਡਿਠੈ ਸਭ ਪਾਪੀ ਤਰਿਆ ॥
jithai oh jaa-ay tithai oh surkharoo us kai muhi dithai sabh paapee tari-aa.
Wherever he goes, he is recognized as honorable. In his company, all the sinners are saved.
Popote anapoenda, anatambulika kama mwenye heshima. Katika kuwepo kwake, watenda dhambi wote wanakombolewa.

ਓਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਪਰਵਰਿਆ ॥
os antar naam niDhaan hai naamo parvaari-aa.
Within him is the Treasure of the Naam, the Name of God. Through the Naam, he is exalted.
Ndani mwake kuna Hazina ya Naam, Jina la Mungu. Kupitia Naam, anaunuliwa juu.

ਨਾਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਨਾਉ ਮੰਨੀਐ ਨਾਇ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਸਭ ਹਿਰਿਆ ॥
naa-o poojee-ai naa-o mannee-ai naa-ay kilvikh sabh hiri-aa.
One should believe in and worship Naam, through Naam all one’s sins are washed off.
Mtu anapaswa kuamini na kuabudu Naam, kupitia Naam mtu anatakaswa kutoka dhambi zake zote.

ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ਇਕ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੇ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜਗਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੧੧॥
jinee naam Dhi-aa-i-aa ik man ik chit say asthir jag rahi-aa. ||11||
They who have remembered God’s Name with single mindedness and focused consciousness, have become exalted in the world.
Wale ambao wamekumbuka Jina la Mungu kwa nia moja na fahamu iliyomakinika, wameinuliwa juu duniani.

Shalok, by the Third Guru:

ਆਤਮਾ ਦੇਉ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
aatmaa day-o poojee-ai gur kai sahj subhaa-ay.
Adopting the poised manner of the Guru, we should worship God, who provides enlightenment to our soul.
Tukichukua hali ya utulivu ya Guru, tunapaswa kuabudu Mungu, anayetoa mwangaza kwa roho yetu.

ਆਤਮੇ ਨੋ ਆਤਮੇ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਾ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਾਇ ॥
aatmay no aatmay dee parteet ho-ay taa ghar hee parchaa paa-ay.
If the individual soul has faith in the Supreme Soul, then it shall obtain realization within its own self.
Iwapo roho binafsi ina imani katika Mungu Mkuu, basi itapokea utambuzi ndani mwake mwenyewe.

ਆਤਮਾ ਅਡੋਲੁ ਨ ਡੋਲਈ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
aatmaa adol na dol-ee gur kai bhaa-ay subhaa-ay.
The human-soul acquires the way and poise of the Guru, it becomes stable and does not waver under the pressure of worldly riches and vices.
Roho ya kibinadamu inapata njia na mkao wa Guru, inakuwa thabiti wala haiyumbi chini ya shinikizo la utajiri na maovu ya kidunia.

ਗੁਰ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur vin sahj na aavee lobh mail na vichahu jaa-ay.
Without the Guru, intuitive wisdom does not come, and the filth of greed does not depart from within.
Bila Guru, hekima ya kiasili haiji, na uchafu wa tamaa hauondoki kutoka ndani mwa mtu.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਭ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥
khin pal har naam man vasai sabh athsath tirath naa-ay.
If Naam is enshrined in the heart (sincerely remember God) even for a moment , one gains the merit of bathing at all the sixty-eight holy places.
Iwapo Naam imewekwa vizuri moyoni (kukumbuka Mungu kwa dhati) hata kwa muda mfupi, mtu anapata sifa kama ya kuoga katika pahala patakatifu pote sitini na nane.

ਸਚੇ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
sachay mail na lag-ee mal laagai doojai bhaa-ay.
One who is attached to the eternal God is not soiled with the dirt of sins. It only happens when one is imbued with the love of worldly things, instead of God.
Yule ambaye amejiambatisha kwa Mungu wa milele hachafuliwi na uchafu wa dhambi. Kunafanyika tu wakati mtu amejawa na upendo wa vitu vya kidunia, badala ya Mungu.

ਧੋਤੀ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਇ ॥
Dhotee mool na utrai jay athsath tirath naa-ay.
This filth of vices cannot be washed off, even by bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
Uchafu huu wa dhambi hauwezi kusafishwa, hata kwa kuoga katika ziara takatifu sitini na nane za hija.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
manmukh karam karay ahaNkaaree sabh dukho dukh kamaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukh does deeds in egotism; he earns only more pain.
Manmukh mwenye wasia binafsi anatenda vitendo katika ubinafsi; anapata tu uchungu zaidi.

ਨਾਨਕ ਮੈਲਾ ਊਜਲੁ ਤਾ ਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥
naanak mailaa oojal taa thee-ai jaa satgur maahi samaa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the filthy ones (sinners) become pure only when they meet and surrender to the True Guru.
Ee Nanak, wale wachafu (watenda dhambi) wanakuwa safi tu wakati wanakutana na kujisalimisha kwa Guru wa kweli.

ਮਃ ੩ ॥

By the Third Guru:
Na Guru wa Tatu:

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਕਦਹੁ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
manmukh lok samjaa-ee-ai kadahu samjhaa-i-aa jaa-ay.
A self-willed person can never be convinced through counseling.
Mtu mwenye wasia binafsi hawezi kushawishika kupitia ushauri.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਰਲਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਰਲੈ ਪਇਐ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਫਿਰਾਇ ॥
manmukh ralaa-i-aa naa ralai pa-i-ai kirat firaa-ay.
Even if we try, that self-willed person will not fit in with the Guru’s followers, and keep on wandering aimlessly because of his pre-ordained destiny .
Hata tukijaribu, mtu huyo mwenye wasia binafsi hatakuwa na maelewano na wafuasi wa Guru, na ataendelea kuzurura bila mwelekeo kwa sababu ni hatima yake iliyoagiziwa mapema.

ਲਿਵ ਧਾਤੁ ਦੁਇ ਰਾਹ ਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
liv Dhaat du-ay raah hai hukmee kaar kamaa-ay.
Loving devotion for God or love for worldly riches are the only two ways to live in this world, and people follow one or the other according to the Divine command.
Ibada ya upendo kwa Mungu ama upendo kwa utajiri wa kidunia ni njia mbili tu duniani, na watu wanafuata moja au nyingine kulingana na amri takatifu.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਸਵਟੀ ਲਾਇ ॥
gurmukh aapnaa man maari-aa sabad kasvatee laa-ay.
A Guru’s follower controls his mind by testing all his thoughts on the touchstone of Guru’s word.
Mfuasi wa Guru anadhibiti akili yake kwa kujaribu fikira zake zote kwenye jiwe la kugusa la neno la Guru.

ਮਨ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਝਗੜਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਥ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮੰਝਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
man hee naal jhagrhaa man hee naal sath man hee manjh samaa-ay.
He fights against evil thoughts in his mind, he counsels his mind and finally molds these evil thoughts into good thoughts.
Anapigana dhidi ya fikira mbaya akilini mwake, anashauri akili yake na mwishowe anafinyanga fikira hizi mbaya zinakuwa fikira nzuri.

ਮਨੁ ਜੋ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਲਹੈ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
man jo ichhay so lahai sachai sabad subhaa-ay.
The mind which has been embellished through the Guru’s word, obtains whatever it wishes.
Akili ambayo imepambwa kupitia neno la Guru, inapata chochote inachotaka.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਦ ਭੁੰਚੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
amrit naam sad bhunchee-ai gurmukh kaar kamaa-ay.
While following the Guru’s teachings, one should always keep partaking of the nectar of God’s Name
Wakati anafuata mafundisho ya Guru, mtu daima anapaswa kuendelea kushiriki nekta ya Jina la Mungu.

ਵਿਣੁ ਮਨੈ ਜਿ ਹੋਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਲੁਝਣਾ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
vin manai je horee naal lujh-naa jaasee janam gavaa-ay.
Those who struggle with something other than their own mind, shall depart having wasted their lives.
Watu wanaopambana na kitu kingine kisochokuwa akili zao wenyewe, wataondoka wakiwa wameharibu maisha zao bure.

ਮਨਮੁਖੀ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੁਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
manmukhee manhath haari-aa koorh kusat kamaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukh, through stubborn-mindedness and the practice of falsehood, loses the game of life.
Manmukh mwenye wasia binafsi, kupitia ukaidi wa kiakili na kutenda udanganyifu, anapoteza mchezo wa maisha.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਨੁ ਜਿਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
gur parsaadee man jinai har saytee liv laa-ay.
Those who conquer their own mind, by Guru’s Grace, lovingly focus their attention on God.
Wale wanaotawala akili zao wenyewe, kwa Neema ya Guru, wanamakinisha kwa upendo uangalifu wao kwa Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh sach kamaavai manmukh aavai jaa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, Guru’s follower realizes the Truth (merges in the eternal God) and the self-willed continues in the cycles of birth and death.
Ee Nanak, mfuasi wa Guru anagundua Ukweli (anaungana na Mungu wa milele) na wenye wasia binafsi wanaendelea katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਸਾਖੀ ॥
har kay sant sunhu jan bhaa-ee har satgur kee ik saakhee.
O’ God’s saintly devotee brothers, listen to one Divine advice of the true Guru.
Ee ndugu mfuasi mtakatifu wa Mungu, sikiza ushauri mtakatifu mmoja wa Guru wa kweli.

ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਜਨਿ ਲੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਖੀ ॥
jis Dhur bhaag hovai mukh mastak tin jan lai hirdai raakhee.
that those who have been so blessed from the beginning will keep this message enshrined in their mind.
Ya kwamba wale ambao wamebarikiwa kutoka mwanzo wataweka ujumbe huu vizuri akilini mwao.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਊਤਮ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਚਾਖੀ ॥
har amrit kathaa saraysat ootam gur bachnee sehjay chaakhee.
Through the Guru’s Teachings, that one can intuitively taste the nectar-like immaculate knowledge of the Divine.
Kupitia mafundisho ya Guru, ndipo mtu anaweza kuonja kiasili maarifa meupe kama nekta ya Mungu.

ਤਹ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰਾ ਜਿਉ ਸੂਰਜ ਰੈਣਿ ਕਿਰਾਖੀ ॥
tah bha-i-aa pargaas miti-aa anDhi-aaraa ji-o sooraj rain kiraakhee.
The Divine Light shines in one’s hearts, and dispels the darkness of ignorance. like the sun removes the darkness of night.
Mwanga Takatifu unang’aa moyoni mwa mtu, na kuondoa giza ya ujinga, kama jua linavyoondoa giza ya usiku.

ਅਦਿਸਟੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ॥੧੨॥
adisat agochar alakh niranjan so daykhi-aa gurmukh aakhee. ||12||
In this way the Guru’s followers behold with their eyes of spiritual knowledge, the invisible, Imperceptible, and Immaculate God.
Kwa njia hii wafuasi wa Guru wanatazama kwa macho yao ya maarifa ya kiroho, Mungu asiyeonekana, asiyejulikana na mwenye weupe wa hali.
