ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ ॥l
man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.
O’ my mind, you cannot be saved (from the vices) without the love for God.
Ee akili yangu, huwezi kukombolewa (kutoka dhambi) bila upendo kwa Mungu.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh antar rav rahi-aa bakhsay bhagat bhandaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
God dwells in the heart of Guru’s followers and they are blessed with the treasure of devotion.
Mungu anaishi mioyoni mwa wafuasi wa Guru na wanabarikiwa na hazina ya ibada.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਨੀਰ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee machhulee neer.
O’ my mind, you should love God, like fish loves water.
Ee akili yangu, unafaa kumpenda Mungu, kama samaki anavyopenda maji.

ਜਿਉ ਅਧਿਕਉ ਤਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੀਰ ॥
ji-o aDhika-o ti-o sukh ghano man tan saaNt sareer.
More the water, happier the fish is, and it gives greater comfort to her body and peace of mind.
Maji yakiwa mengi zaidi, ndivyo samaki anavyofurahi zaidi, na yanapea mwii wake starehe zaidi na amani akilini.

ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਘੜੀ ਨ ਜੀਵਈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਭ ਪੀਰ ॥੨॥
bin jal gharhee na jeev-ee parabh jaanai abh peer. ||2||
But without water, fish cannot live even for a moment and God knows the pain of her separation.
Lakini bila maji, samaki hawezi kuishi hata kwa muda mfupi na Mungu anajua uchungu wa utengano wake.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਮੇਹ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee chaatrik mayh.
O my mind, love the God, as the song-bird loves the rain.
Ee akili yangu, mpende Mungu, kama ndege wa wimbo anavyopenda mvua.

ਸਰ ਭਰਿ ਥਲ ਹਰੀਆਵਲੇ ਇਕ ਬੂੰਦ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਕੇਹ ॥
sar bhar thal haree-aavlay ik boond na pav-ee kayh.
Even if all the pools are filled with water, and the land is blossoming in green, they are of no use to the song-bird if that raindrop does not fall in its mouth.
Hata iwapo vidimbwi vyote vimejawa na maji, naardhi inanawiri kwa kijani kibichi, haina manufaa kwa ndege wa wimbo iwapo hilo tone la mvua lisianguke mdomoni mwake.

ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੇਹ ॥੩॥
karam milai so paa-ee-ai kirat pa-i-aa sir dayh. ||3||
One unites with God only through His grace, otherwise one’s body and soul has to endure the results of past deeds.
Mtu anaungana na Mungu tu kupitia neema ya Mungu, la sivyo mwili na roho ya mtu inalazimika kustahimili matokeo ya vitendo vya awali.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਦੁਧ ਹੋਇ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee jal duDh ho-ay.
O my mind you should love the God like water loves the milk.
Ee akili yangu unafaa kumpenda Mungu kama maji yanavyopenda maziwa.

ਆਵਟਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਖਵੈ ਦੁਧ ਕਉ ਖਪਣਿ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥
aavtan aapay khavai duDh ka-o khapan na day-ay.
When heated, the water bears the heat and it does not let the milk burn.
Wakati yanapashwa joto, maji yanavumilia joto na hayaachi maziwa yachomeke.

ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਵਿਛੁੰਨਿਆ ਸਚਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੪॥
aapay mayl vichhunni-aa sach vadi-aa-ee day-ay. ||4||
God unites the separated ones with Himself, and blesses them with true glory.
Mungu anaungana na waliotenganishwa kutoka kwake, na kuwabariki na utukufu wa kweli.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਚਕਵੀ ਸੂਰ ॥
ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee chakvee soor.
O’ my mind, have such a love for God as the chakwi duck has for the sun.
Ee akili yangu, kuwa na upendo wa Mungu kama bata elfu anayo kwa jua.

ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨੀਦ ਨ ਸੋਵਈ ਜਾਣੈ ਦੂਰਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥
khin pal need na sov-ee jaanai door hajoor.
She (Chakwi duck) does not sleep even for a moment (at night), thinking the sun is very near whereas it is very far away.
Yeye (bata elfu) halali hata kwa muda mfupi (usiku), akifikiria kwamba jua lipo karibu sana ilhali lipo mbali sana.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥੫॥
manmukh sojhee naa pavai gurmukh sadaa hajoor. ||5||
But the self-willed person never understands (this kind of love), while Guru’s followers always feel the presence of God with them.
Lakini mtu mwenye wasia ya kibinafsi haelewi (aina hii ya upendo), ila wafuasi wa Guru daima wanahisi uwepo wa Mungu nao.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾ ਵਣੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
manmukh ganat ganaavanee kartaa karay so ho-ay.
The self-willed person tries to show off counting his so called great deeds, but whatever Creator does that happens.
Mtu mwenye wasia ya kibinafsi anajaribu kujionesha kwa kuhesabu anavyodhani kuwa vitendo vikuu, lakini chochote Muumba anachofanya hicho ndicho kunachotendeka.

ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai jay lochai sabh ko-ay.
God’s worth cannot be estimated, even though all men may desire it.
Thamana ya Mungu haiwezi kukadirika, hata kama wanaume wote wanaweza kutamani kufanya hivyo.

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
gurmat ho-ay ta paa-ee-ai sach milai sukh ho-ay. ||6||
It is only through Guru’s teachings that we realize Him, and it is only by merging in the true God, that we find peace.
Ni kupitia tu mafundisho ya Guru ambapo tunamgundua Mungu, na ni kuwa kuungana na Mungu wa kweli tu, ambapo tunapata amani.

ਸਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sachaa nayhu na tut-ee jay satgur bhaytai so-ay.
If we meet the true Guru, he will help us to develop such a true love for God that it will never break.
Iwapo tukutane na Guru wa kweli, atatusaidia kuendeleza upendo halisi kama huo kwa Mungu ambao hautawahi kuvunjika.

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
gi-aan padaarath paa-ee-ai taribhavan sojhee ho-ay.
Through Guru’s guidance we obtain divine knowledge and gain insight into all the three worlds.
Kupitia mwongozo wa Guru tunapata maarifa takatifu na tunapata ufahamu kuhusu dunia zote tatu.

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥
nirmal naam na veesrai jay gun kaa gaahak ho-ay. ||7||
If a person becomes a buyer of merits (of God), he or she will never forget His pure, immaculate Name.
Iwapo mtu awe mnunuzi wa sifa (za Mungu), yeye kamwe hatasahau Jina lake safi na mweupe.

ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਖਣੂੰ ਜੋ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਸਰ ਤਲਿ ॥
khayl ga-ay say paNkh-nooN jo chugday sar tal.
Like birds who come to peck near the pool of water and then fly away, similarly, humans in this world are guests for a short time
Kama vile ndege wanavyokuja kupekua karibu na kidimbwi cha maji kusha wanapeperuka, sawia, binadamu duniani humu ni wageni kwa muda mfupi.

ਘੜੀ ਕਿ ਮੁਹਤਿ ਕਿ ਚਲਣਾ ਖੇਲਣੁ ਅਜੁ ਕਿ ਕਲਿ ॥
gharhee ke muhat ke chalnaa khaylan aj ke kal.
Everybody has to depart from this world in a short time after playing their role for a day or two.
Kila mtu atalazimika kuondoka kutoka dunia hii kwa muda mfupi baada ya kuigiza jukumu lao kwa siku moja au mbili.

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਚਾ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਲਿ ॥੮॥
jis tooN mayleh so milai jaa-ay sachaa pirh mal. ||8||
Only with Your blessings one can unite with You and will get a seat in the Arena of Truth.
Ni baraka zako tu ambazo zinaweza kuunganisha mtu nawe na atapata kiti katika medani ya Ukweli.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
bin gur pareet na oopjai ha-umai mail na jaa-ay.
Without (the guidance of) Guru, true love for God does not develop, and the dirt ofego doesn’t go away.
Bila (mwongozo wa) Guru, upendo wa kweli kwa Mungu hauendelezwi, na uchafu wa ubinafsi hauondoki.

ਸੋਹੰ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
sohaN aap pachhaanee-ai sabad bhayd patee-aa-ay.
When one feels completely satisfied through the Guru’s word, then one realizes that God within himself.
Wakati mtu anahisi ameridhika kabisa kupitia neno la Guru, basi mtu anagundua Mungu ndani mwake mwenyewe.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਇ ॥੯॥
gurmukh aap pachhaanee-ai avar ke karay karaa-ay. ||9||
Only through the Guru’s guidance we obtain self-realization, what more is there left to door have done?
Ni kupitia tu mwongozo wa Guru ambapo tunapata utambuzi wa kibinafsi, kipi zaidi kimebaki kufanywa?

ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੀਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥
mili-aa kaa ki-aa maylee-ai sabad milay patee-aa-ay.
Those who unite with God after having been satiated by the Guru’s word, there is no need to unite them again because they are never separated.
Wale wanaoungana na Mungu baada ya kutoshelezwa na neno la Guru, hakuna haja ya kuwaunganisha tena kwani hawajawahi kutenganishwa naye.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥
manmukh sojhee naa pavai veechhurh chotaa khaa-ay.
However, the self- willed person does not understand this; having been separated from God, such a person keeps on suffering.
Hata hivyo, mtu mwenye wasia wa kibinafsi haelewi hii; akiwa ametenganishwa na Mungu, mtu kama huyo anaendelea kuteseka.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜੀ ਜਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੧੧॥
naanak dar ghar ayk hai avar na doojee jaa-ay. ||10||11||
O’ Nanak, for a human being, there is but one door to seek, and no other place.
Ee Nanak, kwa binadamu, kuna mlango mmoja tu wa kutafuta, na hakuna mahali pengine.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭੁਲੈ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਭੂਲੀ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਕਾਇ ॥
manmukh bhulai bhulaa-ee-ai bhoolee tha-ur na kaa-ay.
The self-willed soul bride is gone astray from the right path and finds no place of rest.
Roho kama bi harusi mwenye wasia wa kibinafsi amepotoka kutoka njia sahihi na hapati pahali pengine pa kupumzika.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਦਿਖਾਵਈ ਅੰਧੀ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur bin ko na dikhaava-ee anDhee aavai jaa-ay.
Without Guru, nobody can show her the right path, blinded by the worldly vices, she keeps wandering.
Bila Guru, hakuna mtu anaweza kumwonesha njia sahihi, akipofushwa na maovu ya kidunia, anaendelea kuzurura.

ਗਿਆਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਖੋਇਆ ਠਗਿਆ ਮੁਠਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
gi-aan padaarath kho-i-aa thagi-aa muthaa jaa-ay. ||1||
Those who have lost spiritual wisdom due to the worldly vices, they depart cheated and deceived.
Wale ambao wamepoteza busara ya kiroho kutokana na maovu ya kidunia, wanaondoka wakiwa wamedanganywa.

ਬਾਬਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
baabaa maa-i-aa bharam bhulaa-ay.
My friend, it is Maya (worldly temptations) which deceives us with its illusion.
Rafiki yangu, ni Maya (majaribio ya kidunia) ambayo inatulaghai na ndoto yake.

ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲੀ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਨਾ ਪਿਰ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bharam bhulee dohaaganee naa pir ank samaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.||
The unfortunate bride (soul) who gets lost in this illusion cannot unite with her Husband-God.
Bi harusi (roho) asiye na bahati anayepotea katika ndoto hii hawezi kuungana na Mume-Mungu wake.

ਭੂਲੀ ਫਿਰੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰੀ ਭੂਲੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
bhoolee firai disantree bhoolee garihu taj jaa-ay.
The conceited soul-bride, abandoning her own home (her inner-self), wanders in all kinds of risky rituals, and cults, as if lost in foreign lands.
Roho kama bi harusi mwenye majivuno, akiwacha nyumba yake mwenyewe (nafsi yake), anazurura kwa aina zote za mila hatari, na madhehebu, kana kwamba amepotea kwa nchi geni.

ਭੂਲੀ ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਥਲਿ ਚੜੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇ ॥
bhoolee doongar thal charhai bharmai man dolaa-ay.
Being lost from the right path, the soul-bride climbs the mountains (performs pilgrimages and other rituals) but her mind is always wavering in doubt.
Kwa kupotea kutoka njia sahihi, roho kama bi harusi anapanda milima (kufanya hija na mila nyingine) lakini akili yake daima inayumba kutokana na shaka.

ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਗਰਬਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
Dharahu vichhunnee ki-o milai garab muthee billaa-ay. ||2||
Separated from the Primal Being by His command, she cannot unite with Him. Therefore, deluded by her self-conceit, she wails.
Akiwa ametanganishwa kutoka Kiumbe cha Asili kwa amri yake, hawezi kuungana na Mungu. Hivyo basi, akidanganywa na majivuno yake ya kibinafsi, anaomboleza.

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਮ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥
vichhurhi-aa gur maylsee har ras naam pi-aar.
The Guru will unite the separated ones with God by imbuing them with the bliss of God’s Name.
Guru ataunganisha waliotenganishwa na Mungu kwa kuwajazia furaha tele ya Jina la Mungu.
