ਜੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਕਾਪੜੀ ਕਿਆ ਭਵਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ॥
jogee bhogee kaaprhee ki-aa bhaveh disantar.
Why do the Yogis, the revellers and the beggars wander in foreign lands?
Kwa nini mayogi, wapenda burudani na waombaji wanazurura katika nchi geni?

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਹੀ ਤਤੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਨਿਰੰਤਰ ॥੩॥
gur kaa sabad na cheenhee tat saar nirantar. ||3||
They do not reflect on the Guru’s word, in which lies the essence of truth. ||3||
Hawatafakari kuhusu neno la Guru, ambalo ndani mwake kuna kiini cha ukweli.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪਾਧੇ ਜੋਇਸੀ ਨਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ॥
pandit paaDhay jo-isee nit parheh puraanaa.
Pundits, teachers, and astrologers daily read Puranas (Hindu scriptures).
Wabukuzi, walimu na wanajimu wanasoma Puranas (maandishi ya Kihindu) kila siku.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਲੁਕਾਣਾ ॥੪॥
antar vasat na jaananHee ghat barahm lukaanaa. ||4||
But they do not recognize the valuable commodity of Naam and do not realize that the all pervading God is hiding within them. ||4||
Lakini hawatambui bidhaa yenye thamani ya Naam na hawagundui kwamba Mungu anayeenea kote amefichwa ndani mwao.

ਇਕਿ ਤਪਸੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਪੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
ik tapsee ban meh tap karahi nit tirath vaasaa.
Some penitents perform penance in the forests and always reside at holy places.
Waungamaji wengine wanafanya toba nyikani na daima wanaishi mahala patakatifu.

ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਤਾਮਸੀ ਕਾਹੇ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੫॥
aap na cheeneh taamsee kaahay bha-ay udaasaa. ||5||
These men filled with anger do not understand even themselves; why have they become renunciates? ||5||
Wanaume hao waliojawa na hasira hata hawajielewi wenyewe; kwa nini wamekuwa wakanaji?

ਇਕਿ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਦੇ ਸੇ ਜਤੀ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
ik bind jatan kar raakh-day say jatee kahaaveh.
Many make great efforts to control their lust and call themselves celibates.
Wengi wanafanya jitihada kuu za kudhibiti ukware wao na kujiita waseja.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦ ਨ ਛੂਟਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥੬॥
bin gur sabad na chhoothee bharam aavahi jaaveh. ||6||
But without following the Guru’s word, they are not able to escape from lust and lost in the illusion of celibacy remain in the cycles of birth and death. ||6||
Lakini bila kufuata neno la Guru, hawawezi kuepuka ukware na wakipotea katika njozi ya useja wanabaki katika mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਇਕਿ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਾਧਿਕਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
ik girhee sayvak saaDhikaa gurmatee laagay.
There are many householders who strive to serve others and follow the Guru’s teachings .
Kuna wenye nyumba wengi wanaojitahidi kutumikia wengine na kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.

ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥੭॥
naam daan isnaan darirh har bhagat so jaagay. ||7||
They meditate on Naam, give charity and do the ablution of living a honest life. By resolutely worshipping God, they remain alert to worldly allurements. ||7||
Wanatafakari kuhusu Naam, kutoa kwa hisani na kufanya udhu wa kuishi maisha ya kweli, kwa kumuabudu Mungu kwa imara, wanabaki wametahadhari dhidi ya vishawishi vya kidunia.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਸੋ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥
gur tay dar ghar jaanee-ai so jaa-ay sinjaanai.
Understanding about the self and God is attained from the Guru; he who follows the Guru’s teachings, recognizes himself and God both here and hereafter.
Uelewa kuhusu nafsi na Mungu unapatwa kutoka kwa Guru; yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru, anajitambua mwenyewe na Mungu humu na baadaye.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥੮॥੧੪॥
naanak naam na veesrai saachay man maanai. ||8||14||
O’ Nanak, such a person does not forsake God’s Name because that person’s mind now truly believes in the eternal God. ||8||14||
Ee Nanak, mtu kama huyo haachi Jina la Mungu kwa sababu akili ya mtu huyo kwa kweli inasadiki Mungu wa milele.

ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਲੇ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਸਚਿ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
mansaa maneh samaa-ilay bha-ojal sach tarnaa.
It is only by subduing the worldly desire in the mind and by meditating on the eternal God that one can swim across the dreadful worldly ocean of vices.
Ni kwa kushinda hamu ya kidunia akilini na kutafakari kuhusu Mungu wa milele ambapo mtu anaweza kuogelea akivuka bahari mbaya ya kidunia ya dhambi.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤੂ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥
aad jugaad da-i-aal too thaakur tayree sarnaa. ||1||
O’ the merciful God, You have existed since the beginning of the ages and even before that; I have come to Your refuge. ||1||
Ee Mungu mwenye rehema, Wewe umekuwepo tangu mwanzoni wa enzi na hata kabla ya hiyo; mimi nimekuja kwa kimbilio chako.

ਤੂ ਦਾਤੌ ਹਮ ਜਾਚਿਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
too daatou ham jaachikaa har darsan deejai.
O’ God, You are the Giver and we are Your beggars, please grant us your vision.
Ee Mungu, Wewe ndiwe Mpaji nasi ni waombaji wako, tafadhali turuzuku mwono wako.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai man mandar bheejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When we follow the Guru’s teachings and meditate on Naam, our heart gets imbued with God’s love. ||1||Pause||
Wakati tunafuata mafundisho ya Guru na kutafakari kuhusu Naam, moyo wetu unajawa na upendo wa Mungu. ||1|Sitisha||

ਕੂੜਾ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡੀਐ ਤਉ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
koorhaa laalach chhodee-ai ta-o saach pachhaanai.
We realize the eternal God only when we abandon false greed.
Tunagundua Mungu wa milele wakati tu tunaacha tamaa ya uongo.

ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਪਰਮਾਰਥੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad samaa-ee-ai parmaarath jaanai. ||2||
We understand the true spiritual path only when we merge in Naam by following the Guru’s teaching. ||2||
Tunaelewa njia ya kweli ya kiroho wakati tu trunaunganishwa katika Naam kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਜਾ ਲੋਭੀਆ ਲੁਭਤਉ ਲੋਭਾਈ ॥
ih man raajaa lobhee-aa lubh-ta-o lobhaa-ee.
This greedy mind acts as if it were the king of the entire human body and always remains engrossed in greed for Maya.
Akili yenye tamaa inatenda kana kwamba ni mfalme wa mwili mzima wa dinadamu na daima inabaki imevama katika tamaa ya Maya.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥
gurmukh lobh nivaaree-ai har si-o ban aa-ee. ||3||
This greed can be eradicated only by following the Guru’s teachings; one who does that gets imbued with God’s love. ||3||
Tamaa hii inaweza kutokomezwa tu kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru; yule anayefanya hivyo anajawa na upendo wa Mungu.

ਕਲਰਿ ਖੇਤੀ ਬੀਜੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kalar khaytee beejee-ai ki-o laahaa paavai.
Just as one cannot reap any profit by sowing crops in a barren land,
Kama vile mtu hawezi kuvuna faida yoyote kwa kupanda mimea kwa shamba tasa,

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਸਚਿ ਨ ਭੀਜਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਗਡਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
manmukh sach na bheej-ee koorh koorh gadaavai. ||4||
similarly a self-willed person cannot reap any benefit of devotional worship because he remains merged into falsehood. ||4||
vivyo hivyo mtu mwenye hiari binafsi hawezi kupata manufaa yoyote ya ibada ya ujitoaji kwa sababu anabaki ameambatishwa kwa udanganyifu.

ਲਾਲਚੁ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਅੰਧਿਹੋ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
laalach chhodahu anDhiho laalach dukh bhaaree.
O’ people, blinded by greed, abandon greed because greed brings immense pain.
Ee watu, mliopofushwa na tamaa, achane tamaa kwa sababu tamaa inaleta uchungu mkali.

ਸਾਚੌ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
saachou saahib man vasai ha-umai bikh maaree. ||5||
One who eradicates his love for Maya (worldly riches nd power) and ego, realizes the eternal God’s presence in his heart. ||5||
Yule anayeondoa upendo wake wa Maya (utajiri na nguvu ya kidunia) na ubinafsi, anagundua uwepo wa Mungu wa milele moyoni mwake.

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਕੁਵਾਟੜੀ ਮੂਸਹੁਗੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
dubiDhaa chhod kuvaatarhee mooshugay bhaa-ee.
O’ brothers, renounce the wrong path of duality, otherwise you would be robbed of your virtues.
Ee ndugu, kana njia ya uongo ya uwili, ama sivyo utaporwa fadhila zako.

ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੬॥
ahinis naam salaahee-ai satgur sarnaa-ee. ||6||
By following the true Guru’s teachings, day and night we should sing the praises of God’s Name. ||6||
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru wakweli, mchana na usiku tunapaswa kuimba sifa za Jina la Mungu.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਪਥਰੁ ਸੈਲੁ ਹੈ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਫੀਕਾ ॥
manmukh pathar sail hai Dharig jeevan feekaa.
The heart of a self-willed is like a stone; accursed and unpleasant is his life.
Moto wa mtu mwenye hiari binafsi ni kama jiwe; yameelaaniwa na hayapendezi maisha yake.

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਕੇਤਾ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੂਕਾ ॥੭॥
jal meh kaytaa raakhee-ai abh antar sookaa. ||7||
The core of a stone remains dry even when kept in water for long time; similarly a self-conceited person remains unaffected by any amount of good advice. ||7||
Kiini cha jiwe kinabaki bila unyevunyevu wakati unawekwa kwenye maji kwa muda mrefu, vivyo hivyo mtu mwenye majivuno binafsi anabaki haathiriwi na kiwango chochote cha ushauri mzuri.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ॥
har kaa naam niDhaan hai poorai gur dee-aa.
God’s Name is a treasure of all virtues; to whom the perfect Guru has given it,
Jina la Mungu ni hazina ya fadhila zote; kwa yule ambaye Guru kamili amempa,

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਥਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆ ॥੮॥੧੫॥
naanak naam na veesrai math amrit pee-aa. ||8||15||
O’ Nanak, he never forsakes God’s Name because by always meditating on Naam he has partaken the ambrosial nectar of Naam. ||8||15||
Ee Nanak, yeye kamwe haachi Jina la Mungu kwa sababu kwa kutafakari kuhusu Naam daima ameshiriki nekta ya ambrosia ya Naam.

ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
aasaa mehlaa 1.

ਚਲੇ ਚਲਣਹਾਰ ਵਾਟ ਵਟਾਇਆ ॥
chalay chalanhaar vaat vataa-i-aa.
Like travellers, people depart from the world after remaining astray from the righteous path of life,
Kama wasafiri, watu wanaondoka kutoka dunia baada ya kubaki kupotoka kutoka njia ya uadilifu ya maisha,

ਧੰਧੁ ਪਿਟੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
DhanDh pitay sansaar sach na bhaa-i-aa. ||1||
Because they do not love the eternal God’s Name, they unnecessarily keep doind those deeds which keep them entangled in Maya. ||1||
Kwa sababu hawapendi Jina la Mungu wa milele, bila kuhitajika wanaendelea kufanya vitendo hivyo ambavyo wanasalia wamenaswa katika Maya.

ਕਿਆ ਭਵੀਐ ਕਿਆ ਢੂਢੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
ki-aa bhavee-ai ki-aa dhoodhee-ai gur sabad dikhaa-i-aa.
Why should we wander and search Him in different places, when the Guru’s word has revealed God to us within our own heart?
Kwa nini tuzurure na kumtafuta Yeye mahali tofauti, wakati neno la Guru limedhihirisha Mungu kwetu ndani mwa moyo wetu wenyewe?

ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਿਸਰਜਿਆ ਅਪਨੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mamtaa moh visarji-aa apnai ghar aa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Leaving behind egotism and worldly attachment, my mind has come back to its own house, the abode of God in the body itself. ||1||Pause||
Ikiacha nyuma ubinafsi na kiambatisho cha kidunia, akili yangu imerudi kwa nyumba yake, makao ya Mungu katika mwili wenyewe. ||1|Sitisha||

ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਕੂੜਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
sach milai sachiaar koorh na paa-ee-ai.
God is realized only by following the path of truth and not through falsehood.
Mungu anagunduliwa tu kwa kufuata njia ya ukweli na sio kwa udanganyifu.

ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ॥੨॥
sachay si-o chit laa-ay bahurh na aa-ee-ai. ||2||
By remaining attuned to God, one does not take birth again and again. ||2||
Kwa kubaki amemakinikia Mungu, mtu hapata umwilisho tena na tena.

ਮੋਇਆ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਰੋਵਹੁ ਰੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੂ ॥
mo-i-aa ka-o ki-aa rovhu ro-ay na jaanhoo.
Why do you mourn for the deceased? You do not even know the real reason toto grieve (separation from God).
Kwa nini unaomboleza juu ya wafu? Wewe hujui hata sababu halisi ya kuomboleza (utengano kutoka kwa Mungu).

ਰੋਵਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਹੂ ॥੩॥
rovhu sach salaahi hukam pachhaanhoo. ||3||
Mourn over the reasons for your separation from God by lovingly singing His praises and recognize His command (that birth and death is by His will). ||3||
Omboleza juu ya sababu za utengano wako na Mungu kwa kuimba sifa zake kwa upendo na kutambua amri yake (kwamba uzao na kifo ni kwa mapenzi yake).

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਵਜਹੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਇਆ ਜਾਣੀਐ ॥
hukmee vajahu likhaa-ay aa-i-aa jaanee-ai.
We should understand that everyone comes into this world with preordained sustenance.
Tunapaswa kuelewa kwamba kila mtu anakuja duniani humu na riziki iliyoagiziwa mapema.

ਲਾਹਾ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ ॥੪॥
laahaa palai paa-ay hukam sinjaanee-ai. ||4||
If we realize the will of God, only then we earn the profit of human life. ||4||
Iwapo tugundua mapenzi ya Mungu, wakati hu out ndio tunachuma faida ya maisha ya kibinadamu.
