ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
ha-o tuDh aakhaa mayree kaa-i-aa tooN sun sikh hamaaree.
I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!
Nakuambie wewe, Ee mwili wangu: sikiliza ushauri wangu!

ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਝੂਠੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ॥
nindaa chindaa karahi paraa-ee jhoothee laa-itbaaree.
You slander and criticize others. You indulge in false backbiting.
Unazungumza kashfa na kukemea wengine. Unajishughulisha katika kusengenya kwa uongo.

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥
vayl paraa-ee joheh jee-arhay karahi choree buri-aaree.
O my soul, You look upon another’s woman with lustful intention, you commit theft and other evil deeds
Ee roho yangu, unatazama mwanamke wa mwengine kwa nia yenye ukware, unatenda wizi na vitendo vingine viovu.

ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਪਿਛੈ ਰਹੀਏਹਿ ਛੁਟੜਿ ਹੋਈਅਹਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
hans chali-aa tooN pichhai rahee-ayhi chhutarh ho-ee-ah naaree. ||2||
When the soul departs, you will remain behind, like an abandoned woman.
Wakati roho itaondoka, utabaki nyuma, kama mwanamke aliyeachwa.

ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
tooN kaa-i-aa rahee-ah supnantar tuDh ki-aa karam kamaa-i-aa.
O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?
Ee mwili, unaishi katika ndoto! Umefanya vitendo vipi vizuri?

ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਮੈ ਜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਆ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਲਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
kar choree mai jaa kichh lee-aa taa man bhalaa bhaa-i-aa.
When I obtained something by stealing, it felt pleasing to the mind.
Wakati nilipata kitu kwa kuiba, nilihisi kupendezwa akilini.

ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
halat na sobhaa palat na dho-ee ahilaa janam gavaa-i-aa. ||3||
This way, you neither earned any honor in this world, nor any support for the next world. You have wasted away your precious human life.
Kwa njia hii, hukupata heshima yoyote duniani humu, wala msaada wowote kwa ajili ya dunia itakayofuata. Umeharibu bure maisha yako ya kibinadamu yenye thamana.

ਹਉ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o kharee duhaylee ho-ee baabaa naanak mayree baat na puchhai ko-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ Baba Nanak, I am totally miserable, no one cares for me at all!
Ee Baba Nanak, mimi nimetaabika mno, hakuna mtu ananijali hata kidogo!

ਤਾਜੀ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਪੜ ਕੇਰੇ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
taajee turkee su-inaa rupaa kaparh kayray bhaaraa.
Turkish horses, gold, silver and loads of gorgeous clothes,
Farasi wa Uturuki, dhahabu, fedha na mavazi mengi mazuri,

ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਏ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
kis hee naal na chalay naanak jharh jharh pa-ay gavaaraa.
O Nanak, none of these shall go with you after death. O foolish person, these worldly things separate from the body and fall down like embers.
Ee Nanak, hakuna kati ya hayo ambayo hataambatana nawe baada ya kifo. Ee mtu mpumbavu, vitu hivi vya kidunia vinatengana na mwili na kuanguka chini kama makaa yanayowaka.

ਕੂਜਾ ਮੇਵਾ ਮੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
koojaa mayvaa mai sabh kichh chaakhi-aa ik amrit naam tumaaraa.||4||
O’ my God, I have tasted all the delicious foods, like rock candy and dried fruit, but I find that only Your Name is sweet like nectar.
Ee Mungu wangu, nimeonja vyakula vyote vitamu, kama pipi yenye barafu na tunda lililokaushwa, lakini nimepata ya kwamba Jina lako pekee ndilo tamu kama nekta.

ਦੇ ਦੇ ਨੀਵ ਦਿਵਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਭਸਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
day day neev divaal usaaree bhasmandar kee dhayree.
People dig deep foundations to erect big mansions, but in the end these crumble down to heaps of dust.
Watu wanachimba misingi yenye kina kujenga majumba makubwa, lakini mwishowe haya yanaporomoka na kuwa marundo ya mchanga.

ਸੰਚੇ ਸੰਚਿ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੀ ॥
sanchay sanch na day-ee kis hee anDh jaanai sabh mayree.
A person gathers and hoards worldly possessions, and does not share with anyone else.The fool thinks that everything is his own.
Mtu anakusanya na kutwaa mali ya kidunia, wala hagawani na yeyote mwengine. Mpumbavu huyu anadhani ya kwamba vyote ni vyake.

ਸੋਇਨ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੋਇਨ ਮਾੜੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੫॥
so-in lankaa so-in maarhee sampai kisai na kayree. ||5||
He does not remember that Maya does not remain with anyone. Even Lanka, the city of gold, and the mansions of gold were of no use to Ravan in the end.
Hakumbuki ya kwamba Maya haibaki na yeyote. Hata Lanka, jiji la dhahabu, na majumba ya dhahabu hayakuwa na manufaa kwa Ravan mwishowe.

ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੰਨ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥ ਹੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sun moorakh man ajaanaa. hog tisai kaa bhaanaa.||1|| rahaa-o.
O foolish and ignorant mind listen, only God’s Will prevails.
Ee akili mpumbavu na mjinga sikiliza, Mapenzi wa Mungu pekee yanadumu.

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
saahu hamaaraa thaakur bhaaraa ham tis kay vanjaaray.
Our God is a great Banker and we are only His petty traders.
Mungu wetu ni mkurugenzi wa benki mkuu nasi ni wafanyabiashara wake duni.

ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ॥੬॥੧॥੧੩॥
jee-o pind sabh raas tisai kee maar aapay jeevaalay. ||6||1||13||
This soul and body are the capital given to us by Him. He Himself kills, and brings back to life.
Roho na mwili huu ni rasilimali iliyotolewa kwetu naye. Yeye mwenyewe anaua, na kufufua.

ਅਵਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਹਮ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਉ ਘਰ ਬਾਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
avar panch ham ayk janaa ki-o raakha-o ghar baar manaa.
O my mind, I am all alone against the five enemies (vices). How can I protect my virtues from these enemies.
Ee akili yangu, nimo pekee yangu dhidi ya maadui (dhambi) watano. Nitawezaje kulinda fadhila zangu kutoka maadui hao.

ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥
maareh looteh neet neet kis aagai karee pukaar janaa. ||1||
These robbers are beating and plundering me (of my virtues) over and over again; unto whom can I complain?
Wezi hao wananipiga na kuninyara (fadhila zangu) tena na tena; naweza kumlalamikia nani?

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥ ਆਗੈ ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saree raam naama uchar manaa. aagai jam dal bikham ghana. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ my mind, recite the Name of the Supreme God, otherwise, in the world hereafter, you will have to face a very powerful army of the demons of death.
Ee akili yangu, kariri Jina la Mungu mkuu, la sivyo, katika dunia itakayofuata, itakubidi ukabiliane na jeshi lenye nguvu mno la mapepo wa kifo.

ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥
usaar marholee raakhai du-aaraa bheetar baithee saa Dhanaa.
Building a small fort (body), God has put doors (eyes, ears, mouth, etc,) in it. Inside this body-fort lives the soul-bride.
Akijenga ngome ndogo (mwili), Mungu ameweka milango (macho, masikio, mdomo na kadhalika) ndani mwake. Ndani mwa mwili kama ngome mnaishi roho kama bi harusi.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥
amrit kayl karay nit kaaman avar lutayn so panch janaa. ||2||
Thinking herself to be immortal, every day she engages in worldly plays while the five thieves (lust, anger, greed, ego etc.) keep robbing her virtues.
Akijifikiria kuwa asiyeweza kufa, kila siku anajihusisha na michezo ya kidunia wakati wezi watano (ukware, hasira, tamaa, ubinafsi na kadhalika) wanaendelea kuiba fadhila zake.

ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥
dhaahi marholee looti-aa dayhuraa saa Dhan pakrhee ayk janaa.
In the end (at death),the body-fort is demolished and robbed and the soul-bride is captured alone.
Mwishowe (wakati wa kifo), mwili kama ngome unabomolewa na kuporwa na roho kama bi harusi anakamatwa pekee yake.

ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥
jam dandaa gal sangal parhi-aa bhaag ga-ay say panch janaa. ||3||
The soul alone is tortured (by the demon of death) for the evil deeds while those five thieves (evil tendencies) run away.
Roho pekee inateswa (na pepo wa kifo) kutokana na vitendo viovu wakati hao wezi watano (tabia mbaya) wanatoweka.

ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥
kaaman lorhai su-inaa rupaa mitar lurhayn so khaaDhaataa.
Throughout one’s life his wife keeps asking for gold and silver, and the friends seek good food and drinks (pleasures)
Katika maisha yote ya mtu mkewe anashinda akiulizia dhahabu na fedha, na marafiki wake wanatafuta chakula na vinywaji (anasa)

ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥
naanak paap karay tin kaaran jaasee jampur baaDhaataa.||4||2||14||
O’ Nanak, one commits sins for the sake of others but in the end, he suffers alone.
Ee Nanak, mtu anatenda dhambi kwa ajili ya wengine lakini mwishowe, anateseka mwenyewe.

ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਤੇ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਕਾਂਇਆ ਕੀਜੈ ਖਿੰਥਾਤਾ ॥
mundraa tay ghat bheetar mundraa kaaN-i-aa keejai khinthaataa.
O yogi, instead of putting around ears, put these rings around your mind and control your evil desires and let belief in death be Your patched jacket.
Ee yogi, badala ya kuweka kwenye masikio, weka pete hizi kwenye akili yako na udhibiti hamu zako mbaya na uache imani kwa kifo iwe koti lako lenye viraka.

ਪੰਚ ਚੇਲੇ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਰਾਵਲ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਡੰਡਾਤਾ ॥੧॥
panch chaylay vas keejeh raaval ih man keejai dandaataa. ||1||
O Yogi, make your five senses (speech, touch, smell, sight and hearing) your disciples, and make your mind the stick to control your senses.
Ee Yogi, fanya hisi zako tano (tamko, mguso, kunusa, kuona na kusikia) ziwe wanafunzi wako, na ufanye akili yako ikaze kudhibiti hisi zako.

ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥
jog jugat iv paavsitaa.
O yogi, this is how you will find the way to yoga (union with God).
Ee Yogi, hii ndiyo mtindo wa kupata njia inayoelekea kwa yoga (muungano na Mungu).

ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ayk sabad doojaa hor naasat kand mool man laavsitaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Concentrate your mind to the Guru’s word, instead of forest fruits and roots. No one else is capable of showing the way to unite with God.
Makinisha akili yako kwa neno la Guru, badala ya matunda na mizizi ya nyika. Hakuna mwengine anayeweza kuonyesha njia ya kuungana na Mungu.

ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁੰਡਾਇਐ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਗੰਗਾਤਾ ॥
moond moondaa-i-ai jay gur paa-ee-ai ham gur keenee gangaataa.
If the Guru is met by shaving the head at the Ganges bank, then I consider myGuru as the holy Ganges.
Iwapo Guru anapatwa kwa kunyoa nywela kwenye ukingo wa mto Ganges, basi nafikiria Guru wangu kuwa mto Ganges takatifu.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਅੰਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
taribhavan taaranhaar su-aamee ayk na chaytas anDhaataa. ||2||
O’ blind one, why don’t you remember the one Master, who alone is the saviour of the three worlds. ||2||
Ee kipofu, kwa nini humkumbuki Bwana mmoja, ambaye yeye pekee ndiye mkombozi wa dunia tatu.

ਕਰਿ ਪਟੰਬੁ ਗਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥
kar patamb galee man laavas sansaa mool na jaavsitaa.
O’ yogi, you satisfy people with your false show and lose talks, but your own doubt never departs.
Ee Yogi, unaridhisha watu kwa maonyesho yako ya uongo na matamshi bure, lakini shaka yako mwenyewe kamwe haiondoki.
