ਦਯਿ ਵਿਗੋਏ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਫਿਟਾ ਵਤੈ ਗਲਾ ॥
da-yi vigo-ay fireh vigutay fitaa vatai galaa.
Strayed from God, they wander in disgrace, and their entire troop is ruined.
Wakipotoka kutoka kwa Mungu, wanazurura kwa fedheha, na kikundi chao chote kimeharibiwa.

ਜੀਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਰਖੈ ॥
jee-aa maar jeevaalay so-ee avar na ko-ee rakhai.
It is God alone who sustains and destroys the creatures and no one else can save life.
Ni Mungu pekee anayetunza na kuangamiza viumbe na hakuna mwengine anaweza kuokoa maisha.

ਦਾਨਹੁ ਤੈ ਇਸਨਾਨਹੁ ਵੰਜੇ ਭਸੁ ਪਈ ਸਿਰਿ ਖੁਥੈ ॥
daanhu tai isnaanhu vanjay bhas pa-ee sir khuthai.
They go without giving any charity or any cleansing baths; they gather dust on their plucked heads.
Wanaenda bila kutoa kwa hisani au kuoga kwokwote kwa utakaso; wanakusanya vumbi katika vichwa vyao vilivyong’olewa nywele.

ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਰਤਨ ਉਪੰਨੇ ਮੇਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਮਾਧਾਣੀ ॥
paanee vichahu ratan upannay mayr kee-aa maaDhaanee.
It was the water from which the jewels were obtained, by churning the ocean using the Meru mountain as a churning spindle.
Ilikuwa kutoka kwa maji ambapo vito vilipatwa, kwa kukoroma bahari kutumia Mlima Meru kama kifaa cha kukoroga.

ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਦੇਵੀ ਥਾਪੇ ਪੁਰਬੀ ਲਗੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
athsath tirath dayvee thaapay purbee lagai banee;
The sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage were established for the angels on the banks of rivers, where the festivals are celebrated and hymns are chanted.
Ziara sitini na nane za hija zilianzishwa kwa matumizi ya malaika katika ukingo wa mito, ambapo sherehe zinaadhimishwa na nyimbo za kidini kuimbwa.

ਨਾਇ ਨਿਵਾਜਾ ਨਾਤੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਜਾਣੀ ॥
naa-ay nivaajaa naatai poojaa naavan sadaa sujaanee.
After bathing, the Muslims recite their prayers, and after bathing, the Hindus perform their worship. The wise always take cleansing baths.
Baada ya kuoga, Waislamu wanakariri maombi yao, ba baada ya kuoga, Wahindu wanafanya ibada yao. Wenye busara daima wanaoga kwa kujitakasa.

ਮੁਇਆ ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
mu-i-aa jeevdi-aa gat hovai jaaN sir paa-ee-ai paanee.
From birth to death, the human body is kept clean by taking bath or shower.
Kutoka kuzaliwa hadi kufa, mwili wa kibinadamu unafanywa safi kwa kuoga ama kutawadha.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਸੈਤਾਨੀ ਏਨਾ ਗਲ ਨ ਭਾਣੀ ॥
naanak sirkhutay saitaanee aynaa gal na bhaanee.
O Nanak, the plucked-headed ones are like devils. They do not like to hear these words to use water for bathing).
Ee Nanak, wenye vichwa vilivyong’olewa nywele ni kama mashetani. Hawapendi kusikiamaneno haya ya kutumia maji kwa kuoga.

ਵੁਠੈ ਹੋਇਐ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਜੀਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
vuthai ho-i-ai ho-ay bilaaval jee-aa jugat samaanee.
When it rains, there is happiness. Water is the key to all life.
Wakati kunanyesha, kuna furaha, maji ndiyo msingi wa uhai wote.

lਵੁਠੈ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾ ਸਭਸੈ ਪੜਦਾ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
vuthai ann kamaad kapaahaa sabhsai parh-daa hovai.
When it rains, the grains grow, the sugar cane grows (which provide food), and the cotton, which provides clothing for all.
Wakati kunanyesha, nafaka inamea, muwa unamea (unaotoa chakula), na pamba, inayotoa mavazi kwa wote.

ਵੁਠੈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ਨਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਹੀ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਵੈ ॥
vuthai ghaahu chareh nit surhee saa Dhan dahee vilovai.
When it rains, the cows always have grass to graze upon, and housewives have yogurt to churn into butter (and make Ghee- clarified butter)
Wakati kunanyesha, ng’omba daima wana nyasi ya kula, na mama wa nyumbani wana mtindi wa kukoroga uwe siagi (na kutengeneza samli – siagi iliyobainishwa)

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਿਇ ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਸਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਪਇਐ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
tit ghi-ay hom jag sad poojaa pa-i-ai kaaraj sohai.
With that ghee (clarified-butter), sacred feasts and worship services are performed; and all these rituals look impressive.
Kwa samli hiyo, sharehe takatifu na ibada inatendeka; na mila hizi zote zinavutia.

ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੁੰਦੁ ਨਦੀ ਸਭਿ ਸਿਖੀ ਨਾਤੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
guroo samund nadee sabh sikhee naatai jit vadi-aa-ee
The Guru is like the ocean of divine knowledge, and all His Teachings are like the rivers. Bathing within it (following the Guru’s teaching) , glory is obtained.
Guru ni kama bahari ya maarifa takatifu, na Mafundisho yake yote ni kama mito. Kwa kuoga ndani mwake (kufuata mafundisho ya Guru), utukufu unapatikana.

ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਸਿਰਖੁਥੇ ਨਾਵਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਤਾ ਸਤ ਚਟੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ॥੧॥
naanak jay sirkhutay naavan naahee taa sat chatay sir chhaa-ee. ||1||
O’ Nanak, if the plucked-headed ones do not bathe ( follow Guru’s teaching), then they are disgraced, as if seven handfuls of ashes are upon their heads.
Ee Nanak, iwapo waliong’olewa nywele kwenye vichwa wasioge (kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, basi wanaaibishwa, kana kwamba wamemwagiliwa mikono saba ya majivu vichwani pao.

ਅਗੀ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇਹੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
agee paalaa ke karay sooraj kayhee raat.
As fire has been given the quality of warmth by God), no amount of cold can do any harm to fire. Similarly night cannot erase the light of the sun
(Kama vile moto umepewa sifa ya joto na Mungu), hakuna kiwango chochote cha baridi kinaweza kudhutu moto. Sawia hayo usiku hauwezi kufuta mwanga wa jua.

ਚੰਦ ਅਨੇਰਾ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
chand anayraa ke karay pa-un paanee ki-aa jaat.
The darkness can do no harm to the Moon. No social status (high or low)can pollute the water or the air.
Giza haiwezi kudhuru Mwezi. Hakuna hadhi ya kijamii (ya juu ama chini) inaweza kuchafua maji ama hewa.

ਧਰਤੀ ਚੀਜੀ ਕਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
Dhartee cheejee ke karay jis vich sabh kichh ho-ay.
Nothing can affect the earth, in which everything grows.
Hakuna kitu kinaweza kudhuru dunia, ambayo kiloa kitu kinamea ndani mwake.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਪਤਿ ਰਖੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥
naanak taa pat jaanee-ai jaa pat rakhai so-ay.||2||
Similarly O’ Nanak, when God Himself saves one’s honor, only then is one known as honorable.
Sawia Ee Nanak, wakati Mungu mwenyewe anahifadhi heshima ya mtu, wakati huo tu ndio mtu anaheshimika.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਸੁਬਹਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਲਾਣਿਆ ॥
tuDh sachay sub-haan sadaa kalaani-aa.
O’ my True God, I always praised You as Wondrous.
Ee Mungu wangu wa Kweli, daima nilikusifu kama mwenye miujiza

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
tooN sachaa deebaan hor aavan jaani-aa.
You alone are the eternal ruler; all others are subjected to birth and death.
Wewe pekee ni mtawala unayedumu milele; wengine wote wametiishwa kwa kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਸਚੁ ਜਿ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਸਿ ਤੁਧੈ ਜੇਹਿਆ ॥
sach je mangeh daan se tuDhai jayhi-aa.
Those who ask for the gift of Your True Name, they become like You.
Wale wanaoulizia tuzo ya Jina lako la Kweli, wanakuwa kama Wewe.

ਸਚੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਆ ॥
sach tayraa furmaan sabday sohi-aa.
Through the word of the Guru, Your eternal command seems pleasing to them.
Kupitia neno la Guru, amri yako ya milele inaonekana kuwa ya kupendeza kwao.

ਮੰਨਿਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਤੁਧੈ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
mani-ai gi-aan Dhi-aan tuDhai tay paa-i-aa.
By obeying Your command, they obtain divine knowledge and higher intellect from You.
Kwa kutii amri yako, wanapata maarifa takatifu na akili ya juu kutoka kwako.

ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥
karam pavai neesaan na chalai chalaa-i-aa.
By Your Grace, their destiny become beautiful, which cannot be erased.
Kwa Neema yako, hatima yao inakuwa mzuri, ambayo haiwezi kufutwa.

ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਦਾਤਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਚੜਹਿ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
tooN sachaa daataar nit dayveh charheh savaa-i-aa.
You are the True Giver; You give continually. Your Gifts continue to multiply.
Wewe ndiwe Mpaji wa Kweli; unatoa bila mwisho. Tuzo zako zinaendelea kuzidi.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੬॥
naanak mangai daan jo tuDh bhaa-i-aa. ||26||
Nanak begs for that gift which is pleasing to You.
Nanak anaomba tuzo hiyo ambayo inakupendeza Wewe.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੨ ॥

Shalok, by the Second Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Pili:

ਦੀਖਿਆ ਆਖਿ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮੇਉ ॥
deekhi-aa aakh bujhaa-i-aa siftee sach samay-o.
They, whom the Guru through his teachings has made to understand the Truth and has united them with God’s name through singing His Praises,
Wale, ambao Guru kupitia mafundisho yake amefanya waelewe Ukweli na amewaunganisha na Jina la Mungu kupitia kuimba sifa zake,

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਕਿਆ ਉਪਦੇਸੀਐ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥
tin ka-o ki-aa updaysee-ai jin gur naanak day-o. ||1||
What more teachings can be imparted to them who have Guru Nanak as their Guru?
Mafundisho mengine yapi yanaweza kupandikizwa ndani mwao ambao wana Guru Nanak kama Guru wao?

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
Shalok, by the First Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਆਪਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸੋਈ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
aap bujhaa-ay so-ee boojhai.
He alone knows (the way of God’s praise), to whom God reveals Himself.
Yeye mwenyewe anajua (njia ya sifa za Mungu), ambaye Mungu anajidhihirisha kwake.

ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਸੁਝਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
jis aap sujhaa-ay tis sabh kichh soojhai.
He alone knows everything, unto whom God Himself gives knowledge.
Yeye mwenyewe anajua vyote, ambaye Mungu mwenyewe amempa maarifa.

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਥਨਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਲੂਝੈ ॥
kahi kahi kathnaa maa-i-aa loojhai.
The one who merely talks without divine knowledge, is still consumed by Maya.
Yule ambaye anazungumza tu bila maarifa takatifu, bado anatawaliwa na Maya.

ਹੁਕਮੀ ਸਗਲ ਕਰੇ ਆਕਾਰ ॥
hukmee sagal karay aakaar.
God creates all beings according to His Will,
Mungu anaumba viumbe vyote kulingana na Mapenzi yake,

ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਰਬ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
aapay jaanai sarab veechaar.
He Himself knows about all the needs of creatures.
Yeye mwenyewe anajua yote kuhusu mahitaji ya viumbe.

ਅਖਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਖਿਓ ਆਪਿ ॥
akhar naanak akhi-o aap.
O’ Nanak, whatever word I have uttered, is what God Himself has said.
Ee Nanak, neno lolote ambalo nimetamka, ni lile ambalo Mungu mwenyewe amesema.

ਲਹੈ ਭਰਾਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਦਾਤਿ ॥੨॥
lahai bharaat hovai jis daat. ||2||
Doubt departs from one who receives this gift of Divine knowledge.
Shaka inaondoka kutoka yule ambaye amepokea tuzo hii ya maarifa takatifu.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥
pa-orhee.
Pauree:

ਹਉ ਢਾਢੀ ਵੇਕਾਰੁ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
ha-o dhaadhee vaykaar kaarai la
I was an idle minstrel, when God took me into His service.
Nilikuwa mwimbaji asiye na kazi, hadi Mungu akanisajilisha kwa huduma yake.

ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਹੈ ਕੈ ਵਾਰ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ ॥
raat dihai kai vaar Dharahu furmaa-i-aa.
It was the divine command that whether it is day or night, I should go out and sing His praises.
Ilikuwa amri takatifu kwamba iwe mchana au usiku, napaswa kuenda na kuimba sifa zake.

ਢਾਢੀ ਸਚੈ ਮਹਲਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
dhaadhee sachai mahal khasam bulaa-i-aa.
(When I did this), The Master summoned me to His True Court.
(Wakati nilipofanya hivyo), Bwana aliniita kwa Mahakama yake ya Kweli.

ਸਚੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਪੜਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sachee sifat saalaah kaprhaa paa-i-aa.
He honored me with the robes of His True Praise and Glory.
Alinienzi kwa majoho ya Sifa na Utukufu wake wa Kweli.

ਸਚਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
sachaa amrit naam bhojan aa-i-aa.
I received from Him the Ambrosial Nectar of True Naam as my spiritual food.
Nilipokea kutoka kwake Nekta ya Ambrosia ya Naam ya Kweli kama chakula changu cha kiroho.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖਾਧਾ ਰਜਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gurmatee khaaDhaa raj tin sukh paa-i-aa.
Following the Guru’s teachings, whosoever has partaken of this food (Nectar of Naam), has obtained peace.
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, yeyote ambaye ameshiriki chakula hiki (Nekta ya Naam), amepata amani.

ਢਾਢੀ ਕਰੇ ਪਸਾਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥
dhaadhee karay pasaa-o sabad vajaa-i-aa.
I am enjoying the bliss of Naam (received as a blessed gift from him) by singing His praises.
Mimi nafurahia raha tele ya Naam (ambayo nimepokea kama tuzo iliyobarikiwa kutoka kwake) kwa kuimba sifa zake.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨੭॥ਸੁਧੁ
naanak sach saalaahi pooraa paa-i-aa.||27|| suDhu
O’ Nanak, the perfect God is realized by singing His praises .
Ee Nanak, Mungu kamili anagunduliwa kwa kuimba sifa zake.
