ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਿਭੂਤਾ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਨਾਦੁ ਵਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaaveh taa karahi bibhootaa sinyee naad vajaavah.
When it pleases You, some people smear their bodies with ashes, and blow the horn and the conch shell.
Wakati inakupendeza, watu wengine wanapaka miili yao kwa majivu, na kupuliza baragumu na magamba ya kombe.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਮੁਲਾ ਸੇਖ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaavai taa parheh kataybaa mulaa saykh kahaaveh.
When You so desire, some people read the Islamic Scriptures, and proclaim themselves as Mullahs and Sheikhs.
Wakati unavyotaka, watu wengine wanasoma Maandishi ya Kiislamu, na kujitangaza kuwa Mullah na Mashehe.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰਸ ਕਸ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaavai taa hoveh raajay ras kas bahut kamaaveh.
When it pleases You, some become kings, and indulge in all sorts of tastes and pleasures.
Wakati inakupendeza, wengine wanakuwa wafalme, na kujihusisha katika aina yote ya vionjo na raha.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਮੁੰਡੀ ਕਟਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaavai tayg vagaaveh sir mundee kat jaaveh.
When it pleases You, some become warriors and wield the sword, and many heads are chopped off.
Wakati inakupendeza, wengine wanakuwa mashujaa na kutumia uoanga, na vichwa vingi vinakatwa.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਹਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਗਲਾ ਘਰਿ ਆਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaavai jaahi disantar sun galaa ghar aavahi.
When it pleases You, some go to foreign lands and return home after hearing and learning different things of those lands.
Wakati inakupendeza, wengine wanaenda kwa nchi geni na kurudi nyumbani baada ya kusikia na kujifunza vitu tofauti kwa nchi hizo.

ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਇ ਰਚਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਤੂੰ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥
jaa tuDh bhaavai naa-ay rachaaveh tuDh bhaanay tooN bhaaveh.
O’ God, when You so desire, some get attuned to Your Name. Those who live according to Your Will become pleasing to You.
Ee Mungu, kwa wakati unaotaka, wengine wanamakinikia Jina lako. Wale wanaoishi kulingana na Mapenzi yako wanapendeza mbele zako.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
naanak ayk kahai baynantee hor saglay koorh kamaaveh. ||1||
Nanak utters this one prayer (that except living by His command), everything else is the practice of falsehood (which is of no avail in God’s court).
Nanak anatamka ombi hili moja (ya kwamba isipokuwa kuishi kwa amri Yake), kila kitu kingine ni mazoea ya udanganyifu (ambayo hayana mafanikio katika mahakama ya Mungu).

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਵਡਾ ਸਭਿ ਵਡਿਆਂਈਆ ਚੰਗੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
jaa tooN vadaa sabh vadi-aaN-ee-aa changai changa ho-ee.
You are so Great, all Greatness flows from You. You are so Good, Goodness radiates from You.
Wewe ni Mkuu mno, Ukuu wote unamimina kutoka kwako. Wewe ni Mzuti mno, Uzuri wote unatoka kwako.

ਜਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਚਾ ਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਾ ਕੂੜਾ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
jaa tooN sachaa taa sabh ko sachaa koorhaa ko-ay na ko-ee.
When (this becomes our firm belief that) You are true, then everyone created by You also appears true because You dwell in all; therefore no one could be false.
Wakati (hii inakuwa imani yetu thabiti ya kwamba) Wewe ni wa kweli, basi kila mtu aliyeumbwa nawe pia anaonekana kuwa wa kweli kwa sababu Wewe unaishi ndani ya wote; hivyo basi hakuna mtu anaweza kuwa wa uongo.

ਆਖਣੁ ਵੇਖਣੁ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਚਲਣੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਧਾਤੁ ॥
aakhan vaykhan bolan chalan jeevan marnaa Dhaat.
Talking, seeing, speaking, walking, living and dying-all these are illusory.
Kuzungumza, kuona, kutamka, kutembea, kuishi na kufa-yote haya ni kama ndoto.

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਆਪਿ ॥੨॥
hukam saaj hukmai vich rakhai naanak sachaa aap. ||2||
O’ Nanak, God Himself creates and keeps all the creatures under His command.
Ee Nanak, Mungu mwenyewe anaumba na kuweka viumbe vyote chini ya amri yake.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਈਐ ॥
satgur sayv nisang bharam chukhaa-ee-ai.
By following the Guru’s teachings without any hesitation, all doubts are removed.
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru bila kusita kwokwote, shaka yote inaondolewa.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖੈ ਕਾਰ ਸੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
satgur aakhai kaar so kaar kamaa-ee-ai.
Whatever the true Guru asks us to do we should do that.
Chochote ambacho Guru wa kweli anatuambia tufanye ndicho tunachostahili kufanya.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥
satgur ho-ay da-i-aal ta naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai.
When the True Guru becomes merciful, only then we meditate on God’s Name.
Wakati Guru wa Kweli anakuwa mwenye huruma, wakti huo tu ndipo tunatafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu.

ਲਾਹਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਸੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
laahaa bhagat so saar gurmukh paa-ee-ai.
Through the Guru’s teachings, we reap the excellent reward of devotion to God.
Kupitia mafundisho ya Guru, tunachuma zawadi nzuri ya ibada kwa Mungu.

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਈਐ ॥
manmukh koorh bubaar koorh kamaa-ee-ai.
The self-willed person is trapped in the darkness of falsehood; he earns nothing but falsehood.
Mtu mwenye hiari binafsi amenaswa katika giza ya udanganyifu; hapati chochote ila udanganyifu.

ਸਚੇ ਦੈ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਚੁ ਚਵਾਂਈਐ ॥
sachay dai dar jaa-ay sach chavaaN-ee-ai.
If we humbly meditate on God’s Name,
Iwapo tutafakari kwa unyenyekevu kuhusu Jina la Mungu,

ਸਚੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮਹਲਿ ਸਚਿ ਬੁਲਾਈਐ ॥
sachai andar mahal sach bulaa-ee-ai.
only then, we are accepted in God’s court.
Wakati huo tu, ndipo tunakubalika katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ॥੧੫॥
naanak sach sadaa sachiaar sach samaa-ee-ai. ||15||
O’ Nanak, the truthful person, is forever true and remains absorbed in God.
Ee Nanak, mtu mkweli, ni wa kweli milele na anabaki amevama katika Mungu.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

1. Shalok, by the First Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਕਲਿ ਕਾਤੀ ਰਾਜੇ ਕਾਸਾਈ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੰਖ ਕਰਿ ਉਡਰਿਆ ॥
kal kaatee raajay kaasaa-ee Dharam pankh kar udri-aa.
This Dark Age of Kalyug is like knife, and the kings are butchers; righteousness has flown away like a bird.
Enzi hii ya giza ya Kalyug ni kama kisu, na wafalme ni wachinjaji; uadilifu umepeperuka ukienda kama ndege.

ਕੂੜੁ ਅਮਾਵਸ ਸਚੁ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਹ ਚੜਿਆ ॥
koorh amaavas sach chandarmaa deesai naahee kah charhi-aa.
In this dark night of falsehood, the moon of Truth is not visible anywhere.
Katika usiku huu wa giza ya udanganyifu, mwezi wa Ukweli hauonekani pahali popote.

ਹਉ ਭਾਲਿ ਵਿਕੁੰਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
ha-o bhaal vikunnee ho-ee.
I have grown frustrated in the search for the moon of truth,
Nimefadhaika nikitafuta mwezi wa Ukweli,

ਆਧੇਰੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
aaDhaarai raahu na ko-ee.
in this darkness, I cannot find the path.
Katika giza hii, siwezi kupata njia hiyo.

ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਈ ॥
vich ha-umai kar dukh ro-ee.
In the darkness of ego, the entire world is crying out in pain.
Katika giza ya ubinafsi, dunia nzima inalia kwa uchungu.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਿਨਿ ਬਿਧਿ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥
kaho naanak kin biDh gat ho-ee.||1||
O’ Nanak, how one could be saved from suffering in such circumstances?
Ee Nanak, mtu atawezaje kuokolewa kutoka kuteseka kwa hali kama hiyo?

ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, by the Third Guru:
Shalok, na Guru wa Tatu:

ਕਲਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
kal keerat pargat chaanan sansaar.
In KalYug, singing God’s praises has appeared as Divine light in the world.
Katika Kalyug, kuimba sifa za Mungu kumeonekana kama mwanga takatifu duniani.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਈ ਉਤਰੈ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
gurmukh ko-ee utrai paar.
But only a rare Guru’s follower crosses over the worldly ocean of vices by making use of this Divine light (knowledge).
Lakini mfuasi nadra wa Guru pekee anavuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi kwa kutumia mwanga (maarifa) Takatifu.

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ॥
jis no nadar karay tis dayvai.
Only the one on whom God showers His grace receives this divine light.
Kwa yule pekee ambaye Mungu ananyunyuzia neema yake anapokea mwanga huu takatifu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਸੋ ਲੇਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh ratan so layvai. ||2||
O’ Nanak, only such a Guru’s follower receives the jewel like precious Naam.
Ee Nanak, mfuasi wa Guru kama huyo pekee anapokea Naam yenye thamani kama kito.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

Pauree:

ਭਗਤਾ ਤੈ ਸੈਸਾਰੀਆ ਜੋੜੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥
bhagtaa tai saisaaree-aa jorh kaday na aa-i-aa.
There has never been a meeting of minds between the worldly wise people and the true devotees of God.
Hakujawahi kuwa na mkutano wa akili kati ya watu wenye hekima ya kidunia na watawa wa kweli wa Mungu.

ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਭੁਲੁ ਹੈ ਨ ਭੁਲੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਦਾ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
kartaa aap abhul hai na bhulai kisai daa bhulaa-i-aa.
The Creator Himself is never in error, and nobody could mislead Him.
Muumba mwenyewe kamwe hayupo na makosa, na hakuna mtu anaweza kumpotosha.

ਭਗਤ ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
bhagat aapay mayli-an jinee sacho sach kamaa-i-aa.
He unites those devotees with Himself; who practice Truth, and only Truth (devotional worship).
Anaunganisha watawa hao naye mwenyewe; wanaotenda Ukweli, na Ukweli pekee (ibada ya kujitolea).

ਸੈਸਾਰੀ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇਆ ॥
saisaaree aap khu-aa-i-an jinee koorh bol bol bikh khaa-i-aa.
He Himself leads the worldly people astray; they tell lies, and their telling lies is like eating the poison which is the main cause of the spiritual death.
Yeye mwenyewe anapotosha watu wa dunia; wanasema uongo, na kusema uongo kwao ni kama kula sumu ambako ni msingi haswa wa kifo cha kiroho.

ਚਲਣ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਕਾਮੁ ਕਰੋਧੁ ਵਿਸੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
chalan saar na jaannee kaam karoDh vis vaDhaa-i-aa.
They do not recognize the ultimate reality, that we all have to leave this world;they keep on multiplying the poisons of lust and anger.
Hawatambui uhalisia mkuu, ya kwamba sote lazima tuondoke kutoka dunia hii; wanaendelea kuzidisha sumu za ukware na hasira.

ਭਗਤ ਕਰਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਜਿਨੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
bhagat karan har chaakree jinee an-din naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
The devotees perform true service of God by always meditating on His Name.
Watawa wanatenda huduma halisi ya Mungu kwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina lake daima.

ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਜਿਨੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
daasan daas ho-ay kai jinee vichahu aap gavaa-i-aa.
They who eradicate self-conceit from within by becoming true servants of God,
Wale ambao wanaondoa majivuno binafsi kutoka ndani mwao kwa kuwa watumishi wa kweli wa Mungu,

ਓਨਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕੈ ਦਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥੧੬॥
onaa khasmai kai dar mukh ujlay sachai sabad suhaa-i-aa. ||16||
are embellished with the Divine Word, and they obtain honor in God’s court.
Wamepambwa na Neno Takatifu, na wanapata heshima katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Shalok, na Guru wa Kwanza:

ਸਬਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ਜਿਨੀ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਇਕ ਮਨਿ ॥
sabaahee saalaah jinee Dhi-aa-i-aa ik man.
Those who sing praises of God in the early hours of the morning and meditate on Him single-mindedly,
Wale wanaoimba sifa za Mungu katika saa za mapema za asubuhi na kutafakari kuhusu Mungu kwa nia moja,

ਸੇਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਹ ਵਖਤੈ ਉਪਰਿ ਲੜਿ ਮੁਏ ॥
say-ee pooray saah vakh-tai upar larh mu-ay.
are the truly rich, because they fight with their mind at the right time (amrit vela) to resist laziness and vices.
Kwa kweli ni tajiri, kwa sababu wanapigana na akili zao kwa wakati unaofaa (amrit vela) kupinga uzembe na maovu.

ਦੂਜੈ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਰਾਹ ਮਨ ਕੀਆ ਮਤੀ ਖਿੰਡੀਆ ॥
doojai bahutay raah man kee-aa matee khindee-aa.
In the second watch (late morning), the focus of the mind is scattered in all directions.
Katika mtazamo wa pili (baadaye asubuhi), umakini wa akili umetawanyika katika pande zote.

ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਏ ਅਸਗਾਹ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਹਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਲਹਿ ॥
bahut pa-ay asgaah gotay khaahi na niklahi.
So many fall deep into the ocean of worldly affairs; they struggle, but they are unable to come out.
Wengi sana wanaanguka ndani kwa kina mwa bahari ya kazi za kidunia; wanang’ang’ana, lakini hawawezi kutoka.
