ਨਾਮ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਥਾਟੁ ॥
naam sanjogee go-il thaat.
Those who are attuned to the Naam, see the world as a temporary pasture.
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਜਗਤਨੂੰ ਚਰਾਗਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਕ ਆਰਜੀ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਫੂਟੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਟੁ ॥
kaam kroDh footai bikh maat.
Their lust and anger is dispelled, as if the pitcher of these poisons is broken.
ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਵਿਹੁਲਾ ਮਟਕਾ ਭੱਜ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਂਦੇ)।
ਬਿਨੁ ਵਖਰ ਸੂਨੋ ਘਰੁ ਹਾਟੁ ॥
bin vakhar soono ghar haat.
Without the wealth of the Name, they are like an empty house or shop.
ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨਾਮ-ਵੱਖਰ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਂਜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਰੂਪੀ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਤੇ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਹੱਟ ਸੱਖਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੋਲੇ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ॥੪॥
gur mil kholay bajar kapaat. ||4||
Meeting the Guru, the heavy doors of their strayed mind are opened. ||4||
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਕਰੜੇ ਕਵਾੜ ਖੁਲ੍ਹ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ
ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪੂਰਬ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥
saaDh milai poorab sanjog.
Those who meet the Guru through pre-ordained destiny.
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਬਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਉੱਘੜਨ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਸਚਿ ਰਹਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਗ ॥
sach rahsay pooray har log.
These accomplished devotees of God always rejoice the bliss of God’s Name.
ਉਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਪੁਰਸ਼ ਸਦਾ-ਥਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਖਿੜੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇ ਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥
man tan day lai sahj subhaa-ay.
Surrendering to the Guru, they realize God with intuitive ease.
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਤਮਾ ਤੇ ਦੇਹਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਣ ਕਰਨ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਿਰਯਤਨ ਹੀ, ਆਪਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ l
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥੬॥
naanak tin kai laaga-o paa-ay. ||5||6||
O’ Nanak, I respectfully bow to their feet. ||5||6||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹਾਂ

Raag Gauree, First Guru:
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਹਿ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
kaam kroDh maa-i-aa meh cheet.
My conscious mind is engrossed in lust, anger and Maya.
ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਝੂਠ ਵਿਕਾਰਿ ਜਾਗੈ ਹਿਤ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
jhooth vikaar jaagai hit cheet.
I am always awake (ready) and love to enter into the evil of falsehood.
ਝੂਠ ਬੋਲਣ ਦੇ ਭੈੜ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਿਤ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਤਤਪਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਪਾਪ ਲੋਭ ਕੀ ਕੀਤੁ ॥
poonjee paap lobh kee keet.
I have gathered the capital of sin and greed.
ਮੈਂ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਲੋਭ ਦੀ ਰਾਸਿ-ਪੂੰਜੀ ਇਕੱਠੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
ਤਰੁ ਤਾਰੀ ਮਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਚੀਤੁ ॥੧॥
tar taaree man naam sucheet. ||1||
If Your Name, which can eradicate all my sins, comes to dwell in my mind, then It will be like a raft or boat for me (to swim across world-ocean of vices). ||1||
ਤੇਰੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਜੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ ਵੱਸ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਤੁਲਹਾ ਹੈ, ਬੇੜੀ ਹੈ l
ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਮੈ ਤੇਰੀ ਟੇਕ ॥
vaahu vaahu saachay mai tayree tayk.
O’ my wondrous God, I have but only Your support against the vices.
ਹੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਤੂੰ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈਂ ਤੂੰ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈਂ। ( ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚਣ ਲਈ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ।
ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਤੂੰ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਏਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ha-o paapee tooN nirmal ayk. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I am a sinner, You alone are immaculate one. ||1||Pause||
ਮੈਂ ਗੁਨਹਗਾਰ ਹਾਂ, ਕੇਵਲ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈਂ।
ਅਗਨਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਭੜਵਾਉ ॥
agan paanee bolai bharhvaa-o.
A mortal behaves differently under the effect of fire of anger and the tranquility of water.
ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਕਦੇ ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਇਹ ਤੱਤਾ-ਠੰਢਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਏਕੁ ਸੁਆਉ ॥
jihvaa indree ayk su-aa-o.
The tongue and sensual organs crave their individual satisfactions.
ਜੀਭ ਆਦਿਕ ਹਰੇਕ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਚਸਕਾ (ਲੱਗਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ।
ਦਿਸਟਿ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਭਉ ਭਾਉ ॥
disat vikaaree naahee bha-o bhaa-o.
Our whole outlook is evil-oriented without any love or fear of God.
ਨਿਗਾਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਮਨ ਵਿਚ) ਨਾਹ ਡਰ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਹੈ (ਅਜੇਹੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਿਲੇ?)।
ਆਪੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਤਾ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥
aap maaray taa paa-ay naa-o. ||2||
It is only by eradicating self-conceit, one can realize God’s Name. ||2||
ਜੀਵ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਕਰੇ, ਤਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabad marai fir maran na ho-ay.
When one kills his self-conceit through the Guru’s word, then he does not die spiritual death.
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮੁਕਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਤਮਕ ਮੌਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ।
ਬਿਨੁ ਮੂਏ ਕਿਉ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
bin moo-ay ki-o pooraa ho-ay.
Without eradicating self-conceit, how can one attain perfection?
ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪੂਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ (ਉਕਾਈਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ),
ਪਰਪੰਚਿ ਵਿਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਦੋਇ ॥
parpanch vi-aap rahi-aa man do-ay.
instead the mind remains entangled in worldly affairs and duality.
ਸਗੋਂ) ਮਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਪਸਾਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਦ੍ਵੈਤ ਵਿਚ ਫਸਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
thir naaraa-in karay so ho-ay. ||3||
Whatever the Immortal God does, comes to pass. ||3||
ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਅਮਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹੀ ਹੋ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚੜਉ ਜਾ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੁ ॥
bohith charha-o jaa aavai vaar.
I can board the ship of God’s Name only when by His grace, my turn comes.
ਮੈਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ (ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ) ਚੜ੍ਹ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜਦੋਂ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਿਲੇ।
ਠਾਕੇ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਦਰਗਹ ਮਾਰ ॥
thaakay bohith dargeh maar.
Those who are not able to board the ship of Naam, suffer in God’s court.
ਜੇਹੜੇ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ-ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਖ਼ੁਆਰੀ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ l
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਧੰਨੁ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
sach saalaahee Dhan gurdu-aar.
Blessed is that house of the Guru (holy congregation) where I can sing the praise of God
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਹੀ) ਮੈਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੭॥
naanak dar ghar aykankaar. ||4||7||
O Nanak, only in the holy congregation I can realize the presence of God in my heart. ||4||7||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਦਰ ਤੇ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਦਰਸਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ l

ਉਲਟਿਓ ਕਮਲੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
ulti-o kamal barahm beechaar.
By reflecting on God’s virtues, my mind has turned away from Maya.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਜੋੜਿਆਂ ਹਿਰਦਾ-ਕਮਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਲੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰ ਗਗਨਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
amrit Dhaar gagan das du-aar.
I am enjoying such a unique and continuous feeling of divine bliss, as if a stream of Ambrosial nectar is trickling down from the sky in my secret mind.
ਦਿਮਾਗ਼ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ ਨਾਮ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਵਰਖਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਾਲੇ ਝੰਬੇਲਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਅਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਮਿੱਟ ਕੇ ਠੰਢ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਬੇਧਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
taribhavan bayDhi-aa aap muraar. ||1||
God Himself is pervading every where. ||1||
(ਫਿਰ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ (ਦੇ ਜ਼ੱਰੇ ਜ਼ੱਰੇ) ਵਿਚ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
ray man mayray bharam na keejai.
O my mind, do not give in to doubt.
ਹੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ! (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਖ਼ਾਤਰ) ਭਟਕਣ ਛੱਡ ਦੇ
ਮਨਿ ਮਾਨਿਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man maanee-ai amrit ras peejai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
When the mind reposes full faith in God, only then the Ambrosial nectar can be partaken.||1||Pause||
ਜਦੋਂ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕ ਜਾਏ ਤਦੋਂ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਨਾਮ-ਰਸ ਪੀ ਲਈਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
ਜਨਮੁ ਜੀਤਿ ਮਰਣਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
janam jeet maran man maani-aa.
O’ mortal, win the game of life and accept in your mind the truth of death.
ਹੇ ਬੰਦੇ! ਆਪਣੀ ਜੀਵਣ ਖੇਡ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿੱਤ ਅੰਦਰ ਮੌਤ ਦੀ ਸੱਚਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਕਬੂਲ ਕਰ ।
ਆਪਿ ਮੂਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
aap moo-aa man man tay jaani-aa.
When one’s self-conceit dies, the mind itself comes to understand it.
ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਮਨ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਹੀ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਨਜਰਿ ਭਈ ਘਰੁ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
najar bha-ee ghar ghar tay jaani-aa. ||2||
When I was blessed by God with His glance of Grace, I realized His presence within my mind itself. ||2||
ਜਦੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਟਿਕਾਣਾ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਮਜਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ॥
jat sat tirath majan naam.
Meditation on God’s Name is the true austerity, charity, and ablution.
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਹੀ ਜਤ ਸਤ ਤੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਦਾ ਉੱਦਮ) ਹੈ।
ਅਧਿਕ ਬਿਥਾਰੁ ਕਰਉ ਕਿਸੁ ਕਾਮਿ ॥
aDhik bithaar kara-o kis kaam.
What good are ostentatious displays?
ਘਣਾ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ?
ਨਰ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮਿ ॥੩॥
nar naaraa-in antarjaam. ||3||
The All-pervading God knows all that is in our mind. ||3||
ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ
ਆਨ ਮਨਉ ਤਉ ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜਾਉ ॥
aan man-o ta-o par ghar jaa-o.
If I were to believe in any other besides God, only then I would knock at any other door.
ਮੈਂ ਤਦੋਂ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ) ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਮੰਨ ਹੀ ਲਵਾਂ।
ਕਿਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਥਾਉ ॥
kis jaacha-o naahee ko thaa-o.
But where should I go to beg? There is no other place for me.
ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਇਹ ਮੰਗ ਮੰਗਾਂ (ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨ ਭਟਕਣੋਂ ਹਟ ਜਾਏ)?
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੪॥੮॥
naanak gurmat sahj samaa-o. ||4||8||
O Nanak, through the Guru’s Teachings, I am intuitively united with God. ||4||8||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅੰਦਰ ਲੀਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ।

When a person meets the Guru, the Guru shows that person what the death of the self or ego really is.
ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮਰਣ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਵਿਖਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਮਰਣ ਰਹਣ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
maran rahan ras antar bhaa-ay.
Then the mystery of remaining dead (detached from the worldly desires) becomes pleasing to the mind.
ਇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਮੌਤ ਦੇ ਮਗਰੋਂ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਲਗਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਗਗਨ ਪੁਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
garab nivaar gagan pur paa-ay. ||1||
By getting rid of ego, one obtains a high spiritual state, as if one has reached the realm of the sky. ||1||
ਆਪਣਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਉੱਚੀਆਂ ਉਡਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਾਂਦੀ ਰਹੇ l
ਮਰਣੁ ਲਿਖਾਇ ਆਏ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ॥
maran likhaa-ay aa-ay nahee rahnaa.
Death is preordained, nobody can remain alive forever.
ਇਹੀ ਰੱਬੀ ਨਿਯਮ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸਰੀਰਕ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਮਰਨਾ ਭੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ ਹੈ)
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਾਪਿ ਰਹਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
har jap jaap rahan har sarnaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
But by meditating on God with love and devotion, one can (spiritually) remain forever in God’s refuge. ||1||Pause||
(ਹਾਂ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਸਦੀਵੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
satgur milai ta dubiDhaa bhaagai.
Meeting the True Guru, duality is dispelled.
ਜੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ, ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸਿ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
kamal bigaas man har parabh laagai.
The heart blossoms like a lotus, and the mind is attached to God.
ਹਿਰਦੇ ਦਾ ਕੌਲ-ਫੁੱਲ ਖਿੜ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਆਗੈ ॥੨॥
jeevat marai mahaa ras aagai. ||2||
One who remains dead (detaches from Maya), while still alive obtains the supreme bliss. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮਰਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਅੱਗੇ ਪਰਮ ਅਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸਚ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਸੂਚਾ ॥
satgur mili-ai sach sanjam soochaa.
Meeting the True Guru, one becomes truthful, chaste and pure.
ਸੱਚੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਦੁਆਰਾ, ਇਨਸਾਨ ਸਤਿਵਾਦੀ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਊਚੋ ਊਚਾ ॥
gur kee pa-orhee oocho oochaa.
Following the path shown by the Guru, one spiritually rises higher and higher.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦੱਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਦੀ ਪੌੜੀ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਵਿਚ) ਉੱਚਾ ਹੀ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਮੂਚਾ ॥੩॥
karam milai jam kaa bha-o moochaa. ||3||
When God grants His Mercy, the fear of death is dispelled ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੌਤ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ l
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gur mili-ai mil ank samaa-i-aa.
On meeting the Guru and following his teachings, one remains imbued in God’s love by meditating on Naam.
ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲ ਪਏ ਤਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਇਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥
kar kirpaa ghar mahal dikhaa-i-aa.
Granting His mercy, the Guru reveals the God’s presence within the heart itself.
ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਰ ਧਾਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ, ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਬੰਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਵਿਖਾਲ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੯॥
naanak ha-umai maar milaa-i-aa. ||4||9||
O Nanak, by eradicating ego, the Guru unites that person with God. ||4||9||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਉਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ-ਮਿਕ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ
