ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

ਭਾਂਡਾ ਹਛਾ ਸੋਇ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਸੀ ॥
bhaaNdaa hachhaa so-ay jo tis bhaavsee.
Only the heart that is pleasing to God is truly pure.
Ni moyo tu ambao unapendeza Mungu ambao kwa kweli ni safi.

ਭਾਂਡਾ ਅਤਿ ਮਲੀਣੁ ਧੋਤਾ ਹਛਾ ਨ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
bhaaNdaa at maleen Dhotaa hachhaa na ho-isee.
A filthy mind, full of evil thoughts, does not become pure simply by washing at a place of pilgrimage.
Akili chafu, iliyojawa na fikira ovu, haikuwi safi kwa kuoga tu katika pahali pa hija.

ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਹੋਇ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
guroo du-aarai ho-ay sojhee paa-isee.
One is blessed with true wisdom, only by listening to and reflecting upon the Guru’s Word.
Mtu anabarikiwa na hekima ya kweli, kwa kusikiliza na kuwaza kwa makini kuhusu Neno la Guru pekee.

ਏਤੁ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਧੋਇ ਹਛਾ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
ayt du-aarai Dho-ay hachhaa ho-isee.
By getting purified this way alone, heart becomes pleasing to God.
Kwa kutakazwa kwa njia hii tu, ndio moyo unakuwa wa kupendeza kwa Mungu.

ਮੈਲੇ ਹਛੇ ਕਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਸੀ ॥
mailay hachhay kaa veechaar aap vartaa-isee.
However, God Himself provides us the wisdom to know if we are on the right path or not.
Hata hivyo, Mungu Mwenyewe anatupa hekima ya kujua iwapo tupo kwenye njia sahihi au sivyo.

ਮਤੁ ਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਇ ਅਗੈ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥
mat ko jaanai jaa-ay agai paa-isee.
This assumption that one would get wisdom to purify the mind upon reaching the next world is not viable.
Udhanifu huu kwamba mtu atapata hekima ya kusafisha akili anapofika akhera sio unaoweza kutegemewa.

ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ਤੇਹਾ ਹੋਇਸੀ ॥
jayhay karam kamaa-ay tayhaa ho-isee.
A mortal’s character is shaped, based upon his deeds in this life.
Silika ya binadamu inafinyangwa, kulingana na vitendo vyake maishani humu.

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਸੀ ॥
amrit har kaa naa-o aap vartaa-isee.
God Himself bestows ambrosial Naam to the one who surrenders oneself to the Guru.
Mungu Mwenyewe anatawaza Naam yenye ambrosia kwa yule anayejisalimisha kwa Guru.

ਚਲਿਆ ਪਤਿ ਸਿਉ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਵਾਇਸੀ ॥
chali-aa pat si-o janam savaar vaajaa vaa-isee.
His life is embellished and redeemed, and he departs from here with honor and fame.
Maisha yake yanapambwa na kukombolewa, na anaondoka kutoka humu kwa staha na umaarufu.

ਮਾਣਸੁ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਇਸੀ ॥
maanas ki-aa vaychaaraa tihu lok sunaa-isee.
What to speak of the poor human, that person’s glory spreads in all the three worlds.
Kuna nini cha kuzungumzia binadamu myonge, utukufu wa mtu huyo unaenea katika dunia zote tatu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਸਭਿ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰਸੀ ॥੧॥੪॥੬॥
naanak aap nihaal sabh kul taarsee. ||1||4||6||
O’ Nanak, such a person is not only blessed himself and saves his or her entire lineage. |1||4||6||
Ee Nanak, mtu kama huyo anajibariki na pia anaokoa ukoo wake wote.

ਜੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਗਵੈ ਭੋਗੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਖਾਇ ॥
jogee hovai jogvai bhogee hovai khaa-ay.
A yogi practices Yoga and believes that path to be the right one whereas a householder stays engrossed in enjoying worldly pleasures.
Yogi anafanya yoga na anaamini njia hiyo kuwa sahihi ilhali mwenye nyumba anabaki amevama katika kufurahia raha za kidunia.

ਤਪੀਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਪੁ ਕਰੇ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਮਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥
tapee-aa hovai tap karay tirath mal mal naa-ay. ||1||
A penitent practices penance and rubs and bathes the body at places of pilgrimage. ||1|
Muungamaji anafanya toba na kusugua na kuosha mwili katika mahali pa hija.

ਤੇਰਾ ਸਦੜਾ ਸੁਣੀਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਬਹੈ ਅਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayraa sad-rhaa suneejai bhaa-ee jay ko bahai alaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ brother, I only would love to listen if someone shared your praises with me. ||1||Pause||
Ee ndugu, mimi ningependa tu kusikiliza iwapo mtu alishiriki sifa zako na mimi. ||1||Sitisha||

ਜੈਸਾ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੇ ਜੋ ਖਟੇ ਸੋੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
jaisaa beejai so lunay jo khatay so khaa-ay.
What one sows, so does one reap; whatever one earns, that is what he eats.
Kile ambacho mtu anapanda, ndicho anachovuna; chochote mtu anachochuma, ndicho ambacho anakula.

ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸਣੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
agai puchh na hova-ee jay san neesaanai jaa-ay. ||2||
One who leaves here with the mark of God’s praises andis not asked any questions. ||2||
Yule anayeondoka humu na ishara ya sifa za Mungu na haulizwi maswali yoyote.

ਤੈਸੋ ਜੈਸਾ ਕਾਢੀਐ ਜੈਸੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
taiso jaisaa kaadhee-ai jaisee kaar kamaa-ay.
A person earns a name based on the kind of deeds he does.
Mtu anapata jina fulani kulingana na aina ya vitendo anavyotenda.

ਜੋ ਦਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਸੋ ਦਮੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
jo dam chit na aavee so dam birthaa jaa-ay. ||3||
A breath drawn without the remembrance of the Almighty God, that breath is wasted. ||3||
Pumzi unaovutwa bila ukumbusho wa Mungu Mwenyezi, pumzi hiyo ni bure.

ਇਹੁ ਤਨੁ ਵੇਚੀ ਬੈ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਵਿਕਾਇ ॥
ih tan vaychee bai karee jay ko la-ay vikaa-ay.
I would sell this body, if someone would only purchase it in exchange for God’s Name.
Mimi ningeuza mwili huu, iwapo mtu angeununua na anipe Jina la Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੪॥੫॥੭॥
naanak kamm na aavee jit tan naahee sachaa naa-o. ||4||5||7||
O’ Nanak, consider such body a complete waste if it has not enshrined the true Name of God. ||4||5||7||
Ee Nanak, fikiria mwili kama huo kuwa bure kabisa iwapo haujathamini Jina halisi la Mungu.

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik-oNkaar satgur parsaad.
One eternal God, realized by the grace of the True Guru.
Mungu Mmoja wa milele, anayegunduliwa kwa neema ya Guru wa Kweli.

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਖਿੰਥਾ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਡੰਡੈ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਭਸਮ ਚੜਾਈਐ ॥
jog na khinthaa jog na dandai jog na bhasam charhaa-ee-ai.
Yoga or union with God is not received by rituals such as wearing a patched coat, having a walking stick or by smearing the body with ashes.
Yoga au muungano na Mungu haupokelewi kwa mila kama vile kuvaa koti lenye madoa, kuwa na mkongojo au kujipaka majivu kwenye mwili.

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਮੁੰਦੀ ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁਡਾਇਐ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਾਈਐ ॥
jog na mundee moond mudaa-i-ai jog na sinyee vaa-ee-ai.
Yoga or union with God is not receivedby rituals such as wearing earrings, shaving the head, or blowing a horn.
Yoga au muungano na Mungu haupokelewi kwa mila kama vile kuvaa vipuli, kunyoa kichwa, au kupuliza baragumu.

ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥
anjan maahi niranjan rahee-ai jog jugat iv paa-ee-ai. ||1||
The way to unite with God is found by remaining unaffected by the love of worldly riches while still living in it. ||1||
Njia ya kuungana na Mungu inapatikana kwa kutoathiriwa na upendo wa utajiri wa kidunia wakati bado unaishi ndani mwake.

ਗਲੀ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
galee jog na ho-ee.
By mere talk and no action, union with God is not attained.
Kwa matamshi matupu na bila vitendo, muungano na Mungu hauwezi kutimizwa.

ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਸਮਸਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ayk darisat kar samsar jaanai jogee kahee-ai so-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Only that person is a true Yogi who views everybody equally. ||1||Pause||
Mtu huyo peke yake ni Yogi wa kweli ambaye anatazama kila mtu kwa usawa. ||1||Sitisha||

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਐ ॥
jog na baahar marhee masaanee jog na taarhee laa-ee-ai.
Yoga or union with God is not attained by wandering around the cemeteries andthe tombs of the dead; sitting in trances will not provide such union either.
Yoga au muungano na Mungu haipatwi kwa kuzurura kote kwenye makaburi ya wafu; kukaa katika njozi hakuleti muungano kama huo pia.

ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਦੇਸਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਭਵਿਐ ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਈਐ ॥
jog na days disantar bhavi-ai jog na tirath naa-ee-ai.
By roaming around the foreign lands, or by bathing at places of pilgrimage also, one does not attain union with God.
Kwa kuzurura kote kwenye nchi geni, au kwa kuoga kwenye mahali pa hija pia, mtu hatimizi muungano na Mungu.

ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥
anjan maahi niranjan rahee-ai jog jugat iv paa-ee-ai. ||2||
The way to unite with God is found by remaining unaffected by the love of worldly riches while still living in it. ||2||
Njia ya kuungana na Mungu inapatwa kwa kutoathiriwa na upendo wa utajiri wa kidunia wakati bado unaishi ndani mwake.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਤਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਤੂਟੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਈਐ ॥
satgur bhaytai taa sahsaa tootai Dhaavat varaj rahaa-ee-ai.
Meeting with the True Guru, doubt is dispelled and one is able to restrain the wandering mind.
Kwa kukutana na Guru wa Kweli, shaka inaondolewa na mtu anaweza kuzuia akili inayozurura.

ਨਿਝਰੁ ਝਰੈ ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਪਰਚਾ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
nijhar jharai sahj Dhun laagai ghar hee parchaa paa-ee-ai.
This way, ambrosial nectar rains down, celestial music resounds and deep within, spiritual wisdom is born.
Kwa njia hii, nekta ya ambrosia inatiririka chini, muziki wa kimbingu inasikika na ndani kwa kina, hekima ya kiroho inakuzwa.

ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੩॥

naanak jeevti-aa mar rahee-ai aisaa jog kamaa-ee-ai.
O’ Nanak, yoga is to be practiced in such a way that one remains unaffected by the vices while living in the world.
Ee Nanak, yoga inafaa kutendwa kwa mtindo ambao mtu haathiriwi na maovu wakati anaishi duniani.

ਵਾਜੇ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਾਜੈ ਤਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
vaajay baajhahu sinyee vaajai ta-o nirbha-o pad paa-ee-ai.
While lovingly remembering God, when one hears the divine melody without blowing any horn, then one attains such a spiritual status where there is no fear.
Anapomkumbuka Mungu kwa upendo, wakati mtu anasikia melodia takatifu bila kupuliza baragumu yoyote, basi mtu anapata hadhi ya kipekee ya kiroho ambamo hakuna woga wowote.

ਅੰਜਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਰਹੀਐ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਤਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੧॥੮॥

ਕਉਣ ਤਰਾਜੀ ਕਵਣੁ ਤੁਲਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਵਣੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਬੁਲਾਵਾ ॥
ka-un taraajee kavan tulaa tayraa kavan saraaf bulaavaa.
O’ God, what kind of scale or what kind of weights, or what kind of jeweler can I call to assess your worth because Your worth is beyond measure?
Ee Mungu, aina gani ya mizani au aina gani ya vipimo, au sonara wa aina gani ndiye naweza kumuita achunguze thamani yako kwa sababu thamani yako haiwezi kukadirika.

ਕਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇਵਾ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਮੁਲੁ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੧॥
ka-un guroo kai peh deekhi-aa layvaa kai peh mul karaavaa. ||1||
Where can I find a true Guru from whom I get understanding aboutestimating your worth? ||1||
Naweza kumpata wapi Guru wa kweli ambaye kutoka kwake napata uelewa kuhusu kukadiria thamani yako?
