ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
istaree purakh kaam vi-aapay jee-o raam naam kee biDh nahee jaanee.
Both men and women are obsessed with lust and do not understand the way to meditate on God’s Name.
Wake na waume wote wana ashiki ya ukware na hawaelewi njia ya kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu.

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਈ ਖਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਜੀਉ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ॥
maat pitaa sut bhaa-ee kharay pi-aaray jee-o doob mu-ay bin paanee.
They are deeply attached to their loved ones and become spiritually dead as if drowned in the waterless ocean of emotional attachments.
Wamejiambatisha kwa kina kwa wapendwa wao na wanakufa kiroho kana kwamba wamezama katika bahari isiyo na maji ya viambatisho vya kihisia.

ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਧਾਤੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ॥
doob mu-ay bin paanee gat nahee jaanee ha-umai Dhaat sansaaray.
Yes, they become spiritually dead by drowning in the waterless world-ocean of attachments; unaware of the spiritual way of life, they wander in egotism.
Ndio, wanakuwa wafu kiroho kwa kuzama katika bahari-dunia isiyo na maji ya viambatisho; wasifahamu njia ya kiroho ya maisha, wanazurura katika ubinafsi.

ਜੋ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਜਾਸੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥
jo aa-i-aa so sabh ko jaasee ubray gur veechaaray.
Whoever has come into this world is entrapped by Maya and only those who reflect on the Guru’s word are saved.
Yeyote ambaye amekuja duniani humu amenaswa na Maya na ni wale tu wanaotafakari kuhusu neno la Guru ambao wanaokolewa.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੇ ॥
gurmukh hovai raam naam vakhaanai aap tarai kul taaray.
The one who follows the Guru’s teachings and lovingly meditates on God’s Name, swims across the the world ocean of Maya along with his lineage.
Yule anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru na kutafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Jina la Mungu, anaogelea akivuka bahari dunia ya Maya pamoja na kizazi chake.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੨॥
naanak naam vasai ghat antar gurmat milay pi-aaray. ||2||
O’ Nanak, one in whose mind dwells God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings unites with the beloved God. (2)
Ee Nanak, yule ambaye Jina la Mungu linadumu akilini mwake anaungana na Mungu mpendwa kupitia mafundisho ya Guru.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕੋ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੀਉ ਬਾਜੀ ਹੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
raam naam bin ko thir naahee jee-o baajee hai sansaaraa.
O’ brother, this world is like a play; except God’s Name nothing here is eternal.
Ee ndugu, dunia hii ni kama mchezo; isipokuwa Jina la Mungu hakuna kitu humu ambacho ni cha milele.

ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਚੀ ਜੀਉ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
darirh bhagat sachee jee-o raam naam vaapaaraa.
Firmly focus on devotional worship within your heart and deal only in God’s Name.
Makinika kwa uthabiti kwa ibada ya kujitolea moyoni mwako na utende tu katika Jina la Mungu.

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
raam naam vaapaaraa agam apaaraa gurmatee Dhan paa-ee-ai.
God’s Name is infinite and unfathomable, only through the Guru’s teachings this wealth of Naam is attained.
Jina la Mungu halina mwisho na halifahamiki, ni kupitia mafundisho ya Guru pekee ambapo utajiri huu wa Naam unapatwa.

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥
sayvaa surat bhagat ih saachee vichahu aap gavaa-ee-ai.
The selfless service and devotional worship of God is the eternal wealth and through this we can eradicate our self-conceit.
Huduma isiyo na ubinafsi na ibada ya kujitolea kwa Mungu ni utajiri wa milele na kupitia huu tunaweza kuangamiza majivuno yetu binafsi.

ਹਮ ਮਤਿ ਹੀਣ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਅੰਧੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
ham mat heen moorakh mugaDh anDhay satgur maarag paa-ay.
we, the senseless, foolish, idiotic and blinded by Maya have been put us on the right path by the Guru.
Sisi, tusio na akili, wapumbavu, wajinga na tuliopufushwa na Maya tumewekwa kwenye njia sahihi na Guru.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੩॥
naanak gurmukh sabad suhaavay an-din har gun gaa-ay. ||3||
O’ Nanak, by attuning themselves to the Guru’s word, the Guru’s followers become spiritually embellished and they always sing the praises of God.(3)
Ee Nanak, kwa kujimakinisha kwa neno la Guru, wafuasi wa Guru wanapambwa kiroho na daima wanaimba sifa za Mungu.

ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ਕਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਪੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ॥
aap karaa-ay karay aap jee-o aapay sabad savaaray.
It is God Himself who does everything and causes it to be done and He Himself embellishes the life of the mortals by uniting them to the Guru’s word.
Ni Mungu Mwenyewe anayetenda kila kitu na kufanya kila kitu kitendeke na Yeye Mwenyewe anapamba maisha ya binadamu kwa kuwaunganisha na neno la Guru.

ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਜੀਉ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਭਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
aapay satgur aap sabad jee-o jug jug bhagat pi-aaray.
He Himself is the true Guru and Himself the divine word; in every age His devotees are dear to Him.
Yeye Mwenyewe ni Guru wa kweli na Mwenyewe ni neno takatifu; katika kila enzi watawa wake ni wa dhati sana Kwake.

ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਭਗਤ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਏ ॥
jug jug bhagat pi-aaray har aap savaaray aapay bhagtee laa-ay.
Yes, throughout the ages He loves His devotees; He Himself adorns them and attaches them to His devotional worship.
Ndio, kupitia enzi zote Yeye anapenda watawa wake; Yeye Mwenyewe anawapamba na kuwaunganisha na ibada ya kujitolea kwake.

ਆਪੇ ਦਾਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਬੀਨਾ ਆਪੇ ਸੇਵ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
aapay daanaa aapay beenaa aapay sayv karaa-ay.
He Himself is all-knowing and He Himself is all-seeing; He Himself enjoins His devotees to His devotional worship.
Yeye Mwenyewe anajua vyote na Yeye Mwenyewe anaona vyote; Yeye Mwenyewe anasajili watawa wake kwa ibada ya kujitolea kwake.

ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕਾਟੇ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
aapay gundaataa avgun kaatay hirdai naam vasaa-ay.
He Himself is the bestower of virtues and the destroyer of our vices; He Himself enshrines His Name within our hearts.
Yeye Mwenyewe ndiye mtawaza wa fadhila na mwangamizi wa maovu yetu; Yeye Mwenyewe anathamini Jina Lake mioyoni mwetu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਚੇ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੪॥੪॥
naanak sad balihaaree sachay vitahu aapay karay karaa-ay. ||4||4||
O’ Nanak, I dedicate myself forever to the eternal God who Himself does and gets everything done.||4||4||
Ee Nanak, najiweka wakfu milele kwa Mungu wa milele ambaye Mwenyewe anatenda na kufanyiza kila kitu.

O’ my dear soul, follow the Guru’s advice and lovingly meditate on God’s Name.
Ee roho yangu mpendwa, fuata ushauri wa Guru na utafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Jina la Mungu.

ਮੰਞਹੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਜਾਹਿ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
manjahu door na jaahi piraa jee-o ghar baithi-aa har paa-ay.
O’ my dear soul, you do not have to go far away from yourself, you can realize God within your own heart.
Ee roho yangu mpendwa, si lazima uende mbali kutoka kwako, unaweza kugundua Mungu ndani mwa moyo wako mwenyewe.

ਘਰਿ ਬੈਠਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਦਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥
ghar baithi-aa har paa-ay sadaa chit laa-ay sehjay sat subhaa-ay.
Yes, you would realize God in your heart by always intuitively focusing your conscious mind on Him with true faith.
Ndio, utagundua Mungu moyoni mwako kwa kukazia akili yako yenye fahamu kisilika Kwake kwa imani halisi daima.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਖਰੀ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
gur kee sayvaa kharee sukhaalee jis no aap karaa-ay.
Serving (following his teachings) the Guru brings great peace, but he alone does it whom God inspires to do so.
Kutumikia (kufuata mafundisho yake) Guru kunaleta amani kuu, lakini yeye pekee anafanya hivyo ambaye Mungu anamhamasisha hivyo.

ਨਾਮੋ ਬੀਜੇ ਨਾਮੋ ਜੰਮੈ ਨਾਮੋ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
naamo beejay naamo jammai naamo man vasaa-ay.
He sows Naam in his heart and Naam alone sprouts within and he enshrines Naam forever in his mind.
Yeye anapanda Naam moyoni mwake na Naam pekee inachipuka ndani mwake na anathamini Naam milele akilini mwake.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak sach naam vadi-aa-ee poorab likhi-aa paa-ay. ||1||
O’ Nanak, through the eternal God’s Name he is honored here and hereafter. He receives what is predestined for him.||1||
Ee Nanak, kupitia Jina la Mungu la milele anaheshimika humu na katika dunia itakayofuata. Yeye anapokea kile ambacho kimeagiziwa mapema kwake.

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਜਾ ਚਾਖਹਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
har kaa naam meethaa piraa jee-o jaa chaakhahi chit laa-ay.
O’ my soul, if you taste the elixir of God’s Name with conscious mind you will realize that it is very sweet.
Ee roho yangu, iwapo uonje dawa ya Jina la Mungu kwa akili yenye fahamu utagundua kwamba ni tamu sana.

ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੁ ਮੁਯੇ ਜੀਉ ਅਨ ਰਸ ਸਾਦ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
rasnaa har ras chaakh muyay jee-o an ras saad gavaa-ay.
O’ my unfortunate tongue, taste the nectar of God’s Name and forsake the otherworldly tastes.
Ee ulimi wangu usio na bahati, onja nekta ya Jina la Mungu na uachane na vionjo vingine vya kidunia.

ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥
sadaa har ras paa-ay jaa har bhaa-ay rasnaa sabad suhaa-ay.
The tongue adorned with the Guru’s word enjoys the nectar of God’s Name, when it pleases God.
Ulimi uliopambwa na neno la Guru linafurahia nekta ya Jina la Mungu, wakati unapendeza Mungu.

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
naam Dhi-aa-ay sadaa sukh paa-ay naam rahai liv laa-ay.
The person who lovingly meditates on God’s Name always enjoys peace and remains attuned to God’s Name.
Mtu anayetafakari kwa upendo kuhusu Jina la Mungu daima anafurahia amani na anabaki amemakinikia Jina la Mungu.

ਨਾਮੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
naamay upjai naamay binsai naamay sach samaa-ay.
The yearning for the nectar of Naam arises from the Naam itself, the longing for other worldly tastes ends through Naam and one unites with God through Naam.
Hamu ya nekta ya Naam inatokea kutoka Naam yenyewe, tamaa ya vionjo vingine vya kidunia inakwisha kupitia Naam na mtu anaungana na Mungu kupitia Naam.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਲਵਾਏ ॥੨॥
naanak naam gurmatee paa-ee-ai aapay la-ay lavaa-ay. ||2||
O Nanak, Naam is realized through the Guru’s teachings and God Himself attaches us with Naam. ||2||
Ee Nanak, Naam inagunduliwa kupitia mafundisho ya Guru na Mungu Mwenyewe anatuunganisha na Naam.

ਏਹ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਧਨ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਿ ਸਿਧਾਏ ॥
ayh vidaanee chaakree piraa jee-o Dhan chhod pardays siDhaa-ay.
O’ my dear, to run after Maya is painful, as if one is in the service of someone else and had to travel to foreign lands leaving his bride back home.
Ee mpendwa wangu, kukimbilia Naam ni uchungu, kana kwamba mtu yu katika huduma ya mtu mwengine na akapaswa kusafiri kwa nchi geni akiacha mkewe nyumbani.

ਦੂਜੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪਿਰਾ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੋਭਿ ਲੁਭਾਏ ॥
doojai kinai sukh na paa-i-o piraa jee-o bikhi-aa lobh lubhaa-ay.
O my dear in duality, no one has ever attained peace because the mortal gets entrapped in the greed for Maya.
Ee mpendwa wangu uliye katika uwili, hakuna mtu amewahi kupata amani kwa sababu binadamu ananaswa katika tamaa ya Maya.

ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੋਭਿ ਲੁਭਾਏ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਓਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
bikhi-aa lobh lubhaa-ay bharam bhulaa-ay oh ki-o kar sukh paa-ay.
The one who is lured by Maya (worldly riches) is lost in doubt; how can this person find peace?
Yule ambaye anavutiwa na Maya (utajiri wa kidunia) anapotea katika shaka; mtu huyu anawezaje kupata amani?

ਚਾਕਰੀ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ਆਪੁ ਵੇਚਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
chaakree vidaanee kharee dukhaalee aap vaych Dharam gavaa-ay.
Running after worldly riches is very painful like serving someone else; itnecessitates selling away the conscience, causing one to lose faith.
Kufukuza utajiri wa kidunia ni uchungu sana kama kutumikia mtu mwengine; inalazimu kuuza dhamiri, kufanya mtu apoteze imani.
