ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਹਸਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
an-din sahsaa kaday na chookai bin sabdai dukh paa-ay.
Such a person always remains in doubt which never goes away and without reflecting on the Guru’s word, he remains miserable.
Mtu kama huyo daima anabaki katika shaka ambayo kamwe haiondoki na bila kutafakari kuhusu neno la Guru, anabaki ametaabika.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਲਾ ਨਿਤ ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਏ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh antar sablaa nit DhanDhaa karat vihaa-ay.
Lust, anger and greed are very powerful within him; he passes his life constantly entangled in worldly affairs.
Ukware, hasira na tamaa ina nguvu sana ndani mwake; yeye anapitisha maisha yake akiwa amenaswa kila wakati katika shughuli za kidunia.

ਚਰਣ ਕਰ ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਣਿ ਥਕੇ ਦਿਹ ਮੁਕੇ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਏ ॥
charan kar daykhat sun thakay dih mukay nayrhai aa-ay.
Tired are his feet, hands, eyes and ears; his days of life have ended and moment of death has come near.
Miguu, mikono, macho na masikio yake yamechoka; siku zake za maisha zimekwisha na wakati wa kifo umekaribia.

ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲਗੋ ਮੀਠਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
sachaa naam na lago meethaa jit naam nav niDh paa-ay.
God’s Name, through which he could have received the nine treasures of the world, does not seem pleasing to him.
Jina la Mungu, ambalo kulipitia angepokea hazina tisa za dunia, halionekani kumpendeza.

ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਮਰੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਤਾਂ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jeevat marai marai fun jeevai taaN mokhantar paa-ay.
While still alive, if he so detaches himself from the worldly affairs as if he has died but remains spiritually alive and attains liberation from the vices.
Wakati bado yu hai, iwapo ajitenganishe kutoka kwa shughuli za kidunia kana kwamba amekufa lakini abaki hali kiroho na atimize ukombozi kutoka kwa maovu.

ਧੁਰਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਪਰਾਣੀ ਵਿਣੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਆ ਪਾਏ ॥
Dhur karam na paa-i-o paraanee vin karmaa ki-aa paa-ay.
If a person has not been preordained the grace of God, then without virtuous deeds in the past, what can that person receive now?
Iwapo mtu hajaagiziwa mapema na neema ya Mungu, basi bila vitendo vizuri hapo awali, mtu huyo anaweza kupokea nini wakati huu?

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ਤੂ ਮੂੜੇ ਗਤਿ ਮਤਿ ਸਬਦੇ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur kaa sabad samaal too moorhay gat mat sabday paa-ay.
O’ fool, enshrine the Guru’s word in your heart, because only through it one receives the exalted intellect and supreme spiritual status.
Ee mpumbavu, thamini neno la Guru moyoni mwako, kwa sababu kulipitia hilo tu ndio mtu anapokea uwekevu uliokwezwa na hadhi kuu ya kiroho.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤਦ ਹੀ ਪਾਏ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੨॥
naanak satgur tad hee paa-ay jaaN vichahu aap gavaa-ay. ||2||
O’ Nanak, one meets the true Guru only if one eliminates self-conceit from within. ||2||
Ee Nanak, mtu anakutana na Guru wa kweli iwapo tu aondoe majivuno binafsi kutoka ndani mwake.

ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਚਿਤਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮੇਰਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਕਿਸੈ ਗਲੈ ਦਾ ਲੋੜੀਐ ॥
jis dai chit vasi-aa mayraa su-aamee tis no ki-o andaysaa kisai galai daa lorhee-ai.
In whose mind is enshrined my Master, why should he feel anxious about anything?
Yule ambaye akilini mwake mmethaminiwa Bwana wangu, kwa nini ahisi hangaiko kuhusu kitu chochote?

ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਗਲਾ ਕਾ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਧਿਆਇਦਿਆ ਕਿਵ ਨਿਮਖ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹੁ ਮੋੜੀਐ ॥
har sukh-daata sabhnaa galaa kaa tis no Dhi-aa-idi-aa kiv nimakh gharhee muhu morhee-ai.
God, the Master of everything, is the bestower of peace; why should we turn our faces away from His meditation even for a moment?
Mungu, Bwana wa kila kitu, ndiye mtawaza wa amani; kwa nini tugeuze nyuso zetu kutoka kwa utafakari wake hata kwa muda mfupi?

ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਰਬ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਹੋਏ ਨਿਤ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੀਐ ਮੁਹੁ ਜੋੜੀਐ ॥
jin har Dhi-aa-i-aa tis no sarab kali-aan ho-ay nit sant janaa kee sangat jaa-ay bahee-ai muhu jorhee-ai.
One who lovingly remembers God, receives total peace; therefore, everyday we should go and sit in the holy congregation and reflect on God’s virtues.
Yule ambaye anakumbuka Mungu kwa upendo, anapokea amani kamilifu; hivyo basi, kila siku tunafaa kuenda na kukaa katika ushirika mtakatifu na kuwaza kwa makini kuhusu fadhila za Mungu.

ਸਭਿ ਦੁਖ ਭੁਖ ਰੋਗ ਗਏ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੇ ਸਭਿ ਜਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੀਐ ॥
sabh dukh bhukh rog ga-ay har sayvak kay sabh jan kay banDhan torhee-ai.
All the sorrows, yearnings, and maladies of God’s devotee are eradicated, and all the worldly bonds of His devotees are shattered.
Huzuni, tamaa na magonjwa yote ya mtawa wa Mungu yanatokomezwa, na vifungo vyote vya kidunia vya watawa wake vinavunjwa.

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਡਿਠੈ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਲੋੜੀਐ ॥੪॥
har kirpaa tay ho-aa har bhagat har bhagat janaa kai muhi dithai jagat tari-aa sabh lorhee-ai. ||4||
By God’s grace, one becomes His devotee; associating with the devotees, the entire world can go across the world-ocean of vices. ||4||
Kwa neema ya Mungu, mtu anakuwa mtawa wake; ikihusiana na watawa, dunia nzima inaweza kuvuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi.

ਸਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੁਆਉ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
saa rasnaa jal jaa-o jin har kaa su-aa-o na paa-i-aa.
May that tongue be burnt which has not tasted the relish of God’s Name.
Ulimi huo uweze kuchomwa ambao haujaonja kiburudisho cha Jina la Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਸਾਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
naanak rasnaa sabad rasaa-ay jin har har man vasaa-i-aa. ||1||
O’ Nanak, the person who has enshrined God’s Name in the mind, that person’s tongue gets imbued with the relish of the Guru’s word. ||1||
Ee Nanak, mtu ambaye amethamini Jina la Mungu akilini, ulimi wa mtu huyo unapenyezwa na kiburudisho cha neno la Guru.

ਸਾ ਰਸਨਾ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਉ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ॥
saa rasnaa jal jaa-o jin har kaa naa-o visaari-aa.
Let that tongue be burnt, which has forgotten God’s Name.
Ulimi huo uweze kuchomwa, ambao umesahau Jina la Mungu.

ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੨॥
naanak gurmukh rasnaa har japai har kai naa-ay pi-aari-aa. ||2||
O’ Nanak, the tongue of the Guru’s follower recites God’s Name and is imbued with the love of God’s Name. ||2||
Ee Nanak, ulimi wa mfuasi wa Guru unakariri Jina la Mungu na umepenyezwa na upendo wa Jina la Mungu.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
har aapay thaakur sayvak bhagat har aapay karay karaa-ay.
God Himself is the Master, the servant and the devotee; God Himself does and gets everything done.
Mungu Mwenyewe ndiye Bwana, mtumishi na mtawa; Mungu Mwenyewe anatenda na kutendesha kila kitu.

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥
har aapay vaykhai vigsai aapay jit bhaavai tit laa-ay.
God Himself beholds His creation and feels happy; He Himself enjoins us to different tasks as He pleases.
Mungu Mwenyewe anatazama uumbaji wake na kuhisi furaha; Yeye Mwenyewe anatuweka kwa kazi tofauti anavyopenda Yeye.

ਹਰਿ ਇਕਨਾ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਹਰਿ ਇਕਨਾ ਉਝੜਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
har iknaa maarag paa-ay aapay har iknaa ujharh paa-ay.
God Himself puts some on the right path, and others on strayed path.
Mungu Mwenyewe anaweka wengine kwenye njia sahihi, na wengine kwenye njia potovu.

ਹਰਿ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਤਪਾਵਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਚਲਤ ਸਬਾਏ ॥
har sachaa saahib sach tapaavas kar vaykhai chalat sabaa-ay.
God is the true Master and His justice is also based on truth; He Himself enacts and watches His worldly playes.
Mungu ndiye Bwana wa kweli na msingi wa hali yake ni ukweli; Yeye Mwenyewe anaigiza na kutazama michezo yake ya kidunia.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਕਹੈ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੫॥
gur parsaad kahai jan naanak har sachay kay gun gaa-ay. ||5||
Devotee Nanak says it is only by the Guru’s grace that one sings praises of the eternal God. ||5||
Mtawa Nanak anasema kwamba ni kwa neema ya Guru pekee ambapo mtu anaimba sifa za Mungu wa milele.

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Guru wa Tatu:

ਦਰਵੇਸੀ ਕੋ ਜਾਣਸੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ॥
darvaysee ko jaansee virlaa ko darvays.
Only a rare Darvesh (renunciate) understands the principles of renunciation.
Darvesh (mkanaji) nadra peke yake anaelewa kanuni za ukanaji.

ਜੇ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਹੰਢੈ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਧਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਧਿਗੁ ਵੇਸੁ ॥
jay ghar ghar handhai mangdaa Dhig jeevan Dhig vays.
Accursed is his garb and accursed is his life, who is going from door to door begging for alms.
Limelaaniwa vazi lake na yamelaaniwa maisha yake, ambaye anaenda kutoka lango hadi lango akiomba sadaka.

ਜੇ ਆਸਾ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਤਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਉ ॥
jay aasaa andaysaa taj rahai gurmukh bhikhi-aa naa-o.
If he abandons his worldly desires and anxiety, and begs for Naam by following the Guru’s teachings,
Iwapo aache hamu zake za kidunia na fadhaiko, na aombe Naam kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru,

ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਪਖਾਲੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
tis kay charan pakhaalee-ah naanak ha-o balihaarai jaa-o. ||1||
then O’ Nanak, I dedicate myself to him; we should humbly serve that Darvesh. ||1||
basi Ee Nanak, najiweka wakfu kwake, tunafaa kutimikia Darvesh huyo kwa unyenyekevu.

ਮਃ ੩ ॥

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰਵਰੁ ਏਕੁ ਫਲੁ ਦੁਇ ਪੰਖੇਰੂ ਆਹਿ ॥
naanak tarvar ayk fal du-ay pankhayroo aahi.
O’ Nanak, our body is like a tree, our mind and soul are two different birds which come and perch on it; this tree has only one fruit, the essence of God’s Name,
Ee Nanak, mwili wetu ni kama mti, akili na roho yetu ni ndege wawili tofauti wanaokuja kutua kwake; mti huu una tunda mmoja pekee, kiini cha Jina la Mungu.

ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਦੀਸਹੀ ਨਾ ਪਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਤਾਹਿ ॥
aavat jaat na deeshee naa par pankhee taahi.
these birds have no wings and are not seen while coming and going.
Ndege hao hawana mabawa na hawaonekani wakati wanakuja na kuenda.

ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥
baho rangee ras bhogi-aa sabad rahai nirbaan.
The mind-bird always wants to relish the worldly pleasures, but the soul-bird wants to remain imbued with divine word and detached from all temptations
Akili-ndege daima inataka kufurahia raha za kidunia, lakini roho-ndege inataka kubaki imepenyezwa na neno takatifu na kutengenishwa kutoka majaribio yote.

ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਫਲਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥
har ras fal raatay naankaa karam sachaa neesaan. ||2||
O Nanak, imbued with the essence of the fruit of God’s Name, the soul bears the insignia of God’s grace. ||2||
Ee Nanak, ikipenyezwa na kiini cha tunda la Jina la Mungu, roho inabeba ishara ya neema ya Mungu.

ਪਉੜੀ ॥

ਆਪੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਆਪੇ ਹੈ ਰਾਹਕੁ ਆਪਿ ਜੰਮਾਇ ਪੀਸਾਵੈ ॥
aapay Dhartee aapay hai raahak aap jammaa-ay peesaavai.
Since God pervades everywhere therefore, He Himself is the land and he Himself is the farmer; He Himself grows the grains and grinds it into flour.
Kwani Mungu anaenea kote hivyo basi, Yeye Mwenyewe ndiye shamba na Yeye Mwenyewe ndiye mkulima; Yeye Mwenyewe anapanda nafaka na kuisaga kuwa unga.

ਆਪਿ ਪਕਾਵੈ ਆਪਿ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਦੇਇ ਪਰੋਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਬਹਿ ਖਾਵੈ ॥
aap pakaavai aap bhaaNday day-ay parosai aapay hee bahi khaavai.
He Himself cooks the meal, He Himself puts the food in the dishes and He Himself sits down to eat.
Yeye Mwenyewe anapikja mlo, Yeye Mwenyewe anaweka chakula kwenye sahani na Yeye Mwenyewe anaketi ili ale.
