ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਭੇਟੈ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੁ ॥
sukh maanai bhaytai gur peer.
He who meets and follows the Guru-prophet’s teachings enjoys peace.
Yule anayekutana na kufuata mafundisho ya nabii-Guru anafurahia amani.

ਏਕੋ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਵਜੀਰੁ ॥੫॥
ayko saahib ayk vajeer. ||5||
O’ God, You alone are the King and You alone are the Minister. ||5||
Ee Mungu, Wewe pekee ni Mfalme na Wewe peke yako ni Waziri.

ਜਗੁ ਬੰਦੀ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਹਉ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
jag bandee muktay ha-o maaree.
The world is imprisoned in ego; they alone are saved who eradicate their ego.
Dunia hii imefungwa katika ubinafsi; wao peke yao wanaokolewa ambao wanaondoa ubinafsi wao.

ਜਗਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਆਚਾਰੀ ॥
jag gi-aanee virlaa aachaaree.
In this world, rare is the wise person whose conduct is truly immaculate.
Duniani humu, nadra ni mtu mwenye hekima ambaye tabia yake kwa kweli ni nzuri sana.

ਜਗਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
jag pandit virlaa veechaaree.
Rare in this world is a scholar who reflects on the Guru’s word.
Msomi anayewaza kwa makini kuhusu neno la Guru ni nadra.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੇ ਸਭ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
bin satgur bhaytay sabh firai ahaNkaaree. ||6||
Without meeting and following the true Guru’s teachings all wander in ego. ||6||
Bila kukutana na kufuata mafundisho ya Guru wa kweli kila mtu anazurura katika ubinafsi.

ਜਗੁ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
jag dukhee-aa sukhee-aa jan ko-ay.
Generally the humanity is miserable, rare is the person who dwells in peace.
Kwa ujumla ubinadamu wote unataabika, nadra ni mtu anayeishi kwa amani.

ਜਗੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਭੋਗੀ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਇ ॥
jag rogee bhogee gun ro-ay.
The world is spiritually sick from indulgences in vices and is yearning for virtue.
Dunia ni mgonjwa kiroho kutoka kwa kujihusisha katika maovu na inatamani fadhila.

ਜਗੁ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
jag upjai binsai pat kho-ay.
Losing its honor, the humanity is going through the cycles of birth and death.
Ikipoteza staha yake, ubinadamu unapitia mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੭॥
gurmukh hovai boojhai so-ay. ||7||
Only the one who becomes the Guru’s follower understands this secret. ||7||
Ni yule tu anayekuwa mfuasi wa Guru anayeelewa siri hii.

ਮਹਘੋ ਮੋਲਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਅਫਾਰੁ ॥
mahgho mol bhaar afaar.
Nothing equals God in virtues; He is realized by paying a special price such as loving devotional worship and self surrender.
Hakuna kilicho sawa na Mungu katika fadhila; Yeye anagunduliwa kwa kulipa gharama maalum kama vile ibada ya ujitoaji kwa upendo na kujisalimisha.

ਅਟਲ ਅਛਲੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਧਾਰੁ ॥
atal achhal gurmatee Dhaar.
Follow the Guru’s teachings and enshrine that eternal and undeceivable God in your heart.
Fuata mafundisho ya Guru na uthamini Mungu wa milele asiyeweza kudanganywa moyoni mwako.

ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਭਇਕਾਰੁ ॥
bhaa-ay milai bhaavai bha-ikaar.
God is realized only through loving devotional worship and one who lives in His revered fear is pleasing to Him.
Mungu anagunduliwa tu kupitia ibada ya ujitoaji kwa upendo na yule anayeishi katika uoga kwa heshima yake anapendeza kwake.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak neech kahai beechaar. ||8||3||
Lowly Nanak says this after deep contemplation. ||8||3||
Maskini Nanak anasema hivi baada ya kutafakari kwa kina.

ਏਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ॥
ayk marai panchay mil roveh.
When someone dies, one’s five closest relatives (mother, father, siblings, spouse and children) join together and mourn.
Wakati mtu anakufa, jamaa wake watano wa karibu sana (mama, baba, ndugu, mwenzie wa ndoa na watoto) wanaungana pamoja na kuomboleza.

ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ॥
ha-umai jaa-ay sabad mal Dhoveh.
But they who wash away the dirt of their evil thoughts by reflecting on the Guru’s word, their ego is dispelled.
Lakini wale wanaosafisha uchafu wa fikira zao mbaya kwa kutafakari kuhusu neno la Guru, ubinafsi wao unaondolewa.

ਸਮਝਿ ਸੂਝਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥
samajh soojh sahj ghar hoveh.
By understanding that soul never dies, they remain in a state of peace and poise at the death of a relative.
Kwa kuelewa kwamba roho kamwe haifi, wanabaki katika hali ya amani na utulivu wakati wa kifo wa jamaa yao.

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
bin boojhay saglee pat khoveh. ||1||
Without understanding this truth, they continue to grieve and lose their honor in God’s court. ||1||
Bila kuelewa ukweli huu, wanaendelea kuomboleza na wanapoteza staha yao katika mahakama ya Mungu.

ਕਉਣੁ ਮਰੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
ka-un marai ka-un rovai ohee.
Who dies and who mourns for whom?
Nani anakufa na nani anaomboleza nani?

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਭਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karan kaaran sabhsai sir tohee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
O’ the Creator-God, You are present in everyone, (therefore, one whose body dies is You and the one who cries is also You). ||1||Pause||
Ee Muumba-Mungu, Wewe upo ndani mwa kila mtu, (hivyo basi, yule ambaye mwili wake unakufa ni Wewe na yule anayelia pia ni Wewe). ||1||Sitisha||

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
moo-ay ka-o rovai dukh ko-ay.
Rare is the one who truly mourns for the pain of the soul of the dead?
Nadra ni yule anayeomboleza kwa kweli kwa uchungu wa roho ya wafu

ਸੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੇਦਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
so rovai jis baydan ho-ay.
Only that one cries on whom befalls some problem because of the dead person.
Huyo pekee analia ambaye anapata shida fulani kwa sababu ya mtu aliyekufa.

ਜਿਸੁ ਬੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis beetee jaanai parabh so-ay.
Only God Himself knows what that dead person’s soul is going to face,
Mungu Mwenyewe peke yake anajua kile ambacho roho ya mtu aliyekufa itakabiliana nacho,

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
aapay kartaa karay so ho-ay. ||2||
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||2||
Chochote Muumba anachofanya, kinatendeka.

ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat marnaa taaray tarnaa.
Those who eradicate self-conceit while still alive know that the world-ocean of vices can be crossed only by God’s help.
Wale wanaotokomeza majivuno binafsi wakati bado wako hai wanajua kwamba bahari-dunia ya dhambi inaweza tu kuvukwa kwa msaada wa Mungu.

ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
jai jagdees param gat sarnaa.
Salute the Master-God by seeking whose refuge the supreme spiritual status is attained.
Tukuza Bwana-Mungu ambaye kwa kutafuta kimbilio chake hadhi kuu ya kiroho inapatwa.

ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣਾ ॥
ha-o balihaaree satgur charnaa.
But God’s refuge is attained through the true Guru’s teaching, therefore, I dedicate myself to him.
Lakini kimbilio cha Mungu kinapatwa kupitia mafundisho ya Guru wa kweli, hivyo basi, najiweka wakfu kwake.

ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੩॥
gur bohith sabad bhai tarnaa. ||3||
The Guru’s teachings is like a boat and the world-ocean of vices can be crossed over only by reflecting and following the Guru’s teachings. ||3||
Mafundisho ya Guru ni kama mashua na bahari-dunia ya dhambi inaweza kuvukwa tu kwa kuwaza kwa makini na kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
nirbha-o aap nirantar jot.
God Himself is free of any fear and His divine light permeates in all.
Mungu Mwenyewe yu huru kutoka hofu yoyote na mwanga wake mtakatifu unapenyeza katika vyote.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਗਿ ਛੋਤਿ ॥
bin naavai sootak jag chhot.
But without meditating on Naam, the world is lost in superstitions, such as impurity and untouchability at someone’s death.
Lakini bila kutafakari kuhusu Naam, dunia imepotea katika ushirikina, kama vile unajisi na kukosa kugusika wakati wa kifo cha mtu.

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਤਿ ॥
durmat binsai ki-aa kahi rot.
People are getting spiritually ruined because of their evil intellect, what can one say and cry about them?
Watu wanaharibiwa kiroho kwa sababu ya uwekevu wao mbaya, mtu anaweza kusema nini au kulia kuwahusu?

ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥੪॥
janam moo-ay bin bhagat sarot. ||4||
Without devotional worship and without listening to God’s praises, they continue to pass through the cycles of birth and death. ||4||
Bila ibada ya ujitoaji na bila kusikiliza sifa za Mungu, wanaendelea kupitia mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤ ॥
moo-ay ka-o sach roveh meet.tarai gun roveh neetaa neet.
The three modes of Maya (vice, virtue, and power) are the ones who cry when a person has so overcome his ego as if he has already died while still alive.
Mbinu tatu za Maya (dhambi, fadhila, na nguvu) ndizo zinazolia wakati mtu ameshinda ubinafsi wake kana kwamba ameshakufa akiwa bado hai.

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਚੀਤ ॥
dukh sukh parhar sahj sucheet.
Discarding any feelings of pain or pleasure, such a person is intuitively awakened,
Kwa kutupa hisia zozote za uchungu au raha, mtu kama huyo anaamshwa kisilika,

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥
tan man sa-opa-o krisan pareet. ||5||
and has dedicated his body and mind to the love of God. ||5||
Na ameweka wakfu mwili na akili yake kwa upendo wa Mungu.

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
bheetar ayk anayk asaNkh.
The same One (God) dwells within the various countless living beings.
Yule Mmoja (Mungu) anaishi ndani mwa viumbe tofauti wasiohesabika.

ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
karam Dharam baho sankh asaNkh.
But people follow myriad of faiths and perform innumerable rituals.
Lakini watu wanafuata maelfu ya itikadi na kufanya mila zisizohesabika.

ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰੰਥ ॥
bin bhai bhagtee janam biranth.
Without devotional worship and revered fear of God, one’s life is a total waste.
Bila ibada ya kujitolea na uoga kwa heshima ya Mungu, maisha ya mtu ni bure kabisa.

ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਰਮਾਰੰਥ ॥੬॥
har gun gaavahi mil parmaaranth. ||6||
Those who sing God’s praises attain the supreme purpose of human life. ||6||
Wale wanaoimba sifa za Mungu wanatimiza kusudi kuu la maisha ya kibinadamu.

ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
aap marai maaray bhee aap.
When a person dies then in a way God dwelling in him dies and it is also He Himself who kills that person.
Wakati mtu anakufa basi kwa namna fulani Mungu anayeishi ndani mwake anakufa na ni Yeye Mwenyewe anayeua mtu huyo.

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
aap upaa-ay thaap uthaap.
God Himself creates the universe and after creating He Himself destroys it.
Mungu Mwenyewe anaumba ulimwengu na baada ya kuumba Yeye Mwenyewe anauangamiza.

ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਤੂ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
sarisat upaa-ee jotee too jaat.
O’ God, You created the universe and from Your divine light You created countless species.
Ee Mungu, Wewe uliumba ulimwengu na kutoka kwa mwanga wako mtakatifu uliumba spishi zisizohesabika.

ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ॥੭॥
sabad veechaar milan nahee bharaat. ||7||
By reflecting on the Guru’s word, one attains union with God and he no longer wanders in any doubt. ||7||
Kwa kutafakari kuhusu neno la Guru, mtu anapata muungano na Mungu na kamwe hazururi tena katika shaka yoyote.

ਸੂਤਕੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
sootak agan bhakhai jag khaa-ay.
Impurity is there in the burning fire, which devours the world.
Unajisi upo hapo katika moto unaochoma, unaomeza dunia.

ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਥਾਇ ॥
sootak jal thal sabh hee thaa-ay.
There is impurity is in the water, upon the land, and everywhere.
Kuna unajisi katika maji, kwenye ardhi, na kila mahali.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
naanak sootak janam mareejai.
O’ Nanak, by entertaining superstitions like impurity, people continue to go through the cycles of birth and death.
Ee Nanak, kwa kuwaza ushirikina kama unajisi, watu wanaendelea kupitia mizunguko ya kuzaliwa na kufa.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
gur parsaadee har ras peejai. ||8||4||
By the Guru’s Grace, we should drink the nectar of God’s Name. ||8||4||
Kwa Neema ya Guru, tunafaa kunywa nekta ya Jina la Mungu.

ਰਾਗੁ ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥
raag aasaa mehlaa 1.
Raag Aasaa, First Guru:
Raag Aasaa, Guru wa Kwanza:

ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
aap veechaarai so parkhay heeraa.
One who reflects on the self, recognizes the worth of jewel like Naam.
Yule anayetafakari kuhusu nafsi yake, anatambua thamani ya Naam kama kito.

ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
ayk darisat taaray gur pooraa.
With a single glance of mercy, the perfect Guru helps him swim across the world-ocean of vices.
Kwa mtazamo mmoja wa huruma, Guru kamili anamsaidia kuvuka bahari-dunia ya dhambi.

ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥
gur maanai man tay man Dheeraa. ||1||
Such a person develops complete faith in the Guru’s teachings and his mind does not waver in the love of Maya. ||1||
Mtu kama huyo anasitawisha imani kamili katika mafundisho ya Guru na akili yake haiyumbi katika upendo wa Maya.

ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
aisaa saahu saraafee karai.
The Guru is like a banker, who tests us before bestowing the wealth of Naam.
Guru ni kama mkurugenzi wa benki, anayetujaribu kabla kutawaza kwetu utajiri wa Naam.

ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachee nadar ayk liv tarai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
and casts his true glance of grace, that person’s mind gets attuned to God and he swims across the worldly ocean of vices. ||1||Pause||
na kutupa mtazamo wake wa kweli wa neema, akili ya mtu huyo inamakinikia Mungu na anaogelea akivuka bahari ya kidunia ya dhambi. ||1||Sitisha||

ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
poonjee naam niranjan saar.
One who considers the immaculate God’s Name as the sublime capital and
Mtu anayefikiria Jina safi la Mungu kuwa rasilimali tukufu na

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
nirmal saach rataa paikaar.
is imbued with the love of eternal God, becomes an immaculate wise man.
Akijawa na upendo wa Mungu wa milele, anakuwa mtu safi mwenye hekima.

ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
sifat sahj ghar gur kartaar. ||2||
He intuitively enshrines the Guru-God in his heart by singing God’s praise. ||2||
Kisilika anathamini Guru-Mungu moyoni mwake kwa kuimba sifa za Mungu.

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
aasaa mansaa sabad jalaa-ay.
He burns away all his hopes and worldly desires through the Guru’s word.
Yeye anateketeza matumaini yake yote na hamu za kidunia kupitia neno la Guru.

ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
raam naraa-in kahai kahaa-ay.
He himself utters God’s praises and motivates others to do the same.
Yeye mwenyewe anatamka sifa za Mungu na kuhamasisha wengine kufanya hivyo.

ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
gur tay vaat mahal ghar paa-ay. ||3||
By following the Guru’s teachings, he finds the righteous way of life and realizes God’s abode in his heart. ||3||
Kwa kufuata mafundisho ya Guru, anapata njia adilifu ya maisha na kugundua makao ya Mungu moyoni mwake.
