ਕਾਇਆ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੈ ਧੋਤੀ ॥
kaa-i-aa barahmaa man hai Dhotee.
O’ Pundit, for me, a body devoid of evil thoughts is the high caste Brahmin. The purified mind is my Dhoti, the cloth around the legs;
Ee Mbukuzi, kwangu, mwili usio na fikira mbaya ni Brahmin wa tabaka la Juu. Akili iliyotakaswa ni Dhoti yangu, nguo inayozunguka miguu;

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਸਪਾਤੀ ॥
gi-aan janay-oo Dhi-aan kuspaatee.
divine knowledge is the sacred thread and mind attuned to God is the grass ring.
Maarifa takatifu ni uzi mtakatifu na akili iliyomakinikia Mungu ni pete ya unyasi.

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਸੁ ਜਾਚਉ ਨਾਉ ॥
har naamaa jas jaacha-o naa-o.
I only beg for God’s Name and sing His praise,
Naomba tu Jina la Mungu na kuimba sifa zake,

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੧॥
gur parsaadee barahm samaa-o. ||1||
so that by the Guru’s grace I may remain absorbed in God ||1||

ਪਾਂਡੇ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
paaNday aisaa barahm beechaar.
O’ Pandit, contemplate on God’s virtues in such a way,
Ee Mwalimu wa busara, tafakari kuhusu fadhila za Mungu kwa njia kama hiyo,

ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਚਿ ਨਾਮੋ ਪੜਉ ਨਾਮੇ ਚਜੁ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naamay such naamo parha-o naamay chaj aachaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
that His Name may sanctify you, His Name may be your study of sacred books and His Name be your wisdom and way of life. ||1||Pause||
Kwamba Jina lake liweze kukutakasa, Jina lake liwe somo lako la vitabu takatifu na Jina lake liwe hekima yako na mtindo wako wa maisha. ||1||Sitisha||

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਨੇਊ ਜਿਚਰੁ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
baahar janay-oo jichar jot hai naal.
O’ Pundit, the outer sacred thread is worthwhile only as long as the divine light is within you .
Ee Mbukuzi, uzi mtakatifu wa nje una maana ili mradi mwanga mtakatifu upo ndani mwako.

ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
Dhotee tikaa naam samaal.
Instead of outward symbols such as the sacred cloth around the legs and the ceremonial mark on the forehead, amass God’s Name.
Badala ya ishara za nje kama nguo takatifu miguuni na alama ya kisherehe kwenye paji, kusanya Jina la Mungu.

ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
aithai othai nibhee naal.
Here and hereafter, the Name alone shall stand by you.
Humu na ahera, Jina hilo peke litasimama nawe.

ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਹੋਰਿ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥
vin naavai hor karam na bhaal. ||2||
Therefore, except meditation on God’s Name don’t seek any other rituals. ||2||
Hivyo basi, isipokuwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu usitafute mila zozote zingine.

ਪੂਜਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥
poojaa paraym maa-i-aa parjaal.
Consider love for God as worship and burn your desire for Maya as ritual fire.
Fikiria upendo kwa Mungu kama ibada na uchome hamu yako ya Maya kama moto wa kimila.

ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਭਾਲਿ ॥
ayko vaykhhu avar na bhaal.
Behold only the one God in all and do not seek out any other (god or goddess).
Tazama tu Mungu mmoja katika vyote na usitafute (mungu au mungu-kike) mwengine yeyote.

ਚੀਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੈ ਤਤੁ ਗਗਨ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
cheenHai tat gagan das du-aar.
A person should recognize the essence (of the prevalence of God) in the heavens and all the ten directions of the world,
Mtu anafaa kutambua kiini (cha kudumu kwa Mungu) mbinguni na katika mielekeo yote kumi ya dunia,

ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਬੀਚਾਰ ॥੩॥ har
mukh paath parhai beechaar. ||3||
Read aloud and reflect on the divine word. ||3||
Soma kwa sauti na utafakari kuhusu neno takatifu.

ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭਾਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
bhojan bhaa-o bharam bha-o bhaagai.
Doubt and fear depart with the spiritual diet of God’s love.
Shaka na uoga unaondoka kwa ulaji wa kiroho wa upendo wa Mungu.

ਪਾਹਰੂਅਰਾ ਛਬਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
paahroo-araa chhab chor na laagai.
With powerful guard like God, no evil thought would enter the mind.
Na mlinzi mwenye nguvu kama Mungu, hakuna fikira mbaya itaingia akili.

ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਏਕੁ ॥
tilak lilaat jaanai parabh ayk.
Realization of God is the best form of ceremonial mark on the forehead.
Utambuzi wa Mungu ni muundo mzuri kabisa wa alama ya kisherehe kwenye paji.

ਬੂਝੈ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੁ ॥੪॥
boojhai barahm antar bibayk. ||4||
Realization of God within is the best intelect (sense of discrimination between good and bad). ||4||
Utambuzi wa Mungu ndani mwetu ni uwekevu mzuri zaidi (hisia ya kutofautisha kati ya mzuri na mbaya).

ਆਚਾਰੀ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਤਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
aachaaree nahee jeeti-aa jaa-ay.
God cannot be realized by rites and rituals.
Mungu hawezi kugunduliwa kwa mila na desturi.

ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇ ॥
paath parhai nahee keemat paa-ay.
His virtues cannot be estimated by reciting sacred scriptures.
Fadhila zake haziwezi kukadirika kwa kukariri maandishi takatifu.

ਅਸਟ ਦਸੀ ਚਹੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
asat dasee chahu bhayd na paa-i-aa.
The eighteen Puranas and the four Vedas do not know His mystery.
Puranas kumi na nane na Vedas nne hazijui fumbo lake.

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੨੦॥
naanak satgur barahm dikhaa-i-aa. ||5||20||
O’ Nanak, the true Guru has revealed that God to me. ||5||20||
Ee Nanak, Guru wa kweli amedhihirisha Mungu huyo kwangu.

ਸੇਵਕੁ ਦਾਸੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
sayvak daas bhagat jan so-ee.
He alone is the selfless servant and humble devotee of God,
Yeye peke yake ni mtumishi asiye na ubinafsi na mtawa mnyenyekevu wa Mungu,

ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
thaakur kaa daas gurmukh ho-ee.
who follows the Guru’s teachings.
Anayefuata mafundisho ya Guru.

ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਗੋਈ ॥
jin sir saajee tin fun go-ee.
He who has created the Universe, shall ultimately destroy it.
Yule ambaye ameumba Ulimwengu, mwishowe atauangamiza.

ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
tis bin doojaa avar na ko-ee. ||1||
Without Him there is none other at all. ||1||
Bila Yeye hakuna mwengine hata mmoja.

ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
saach naam gur sabad veechaar.
By contemplating and meditating on God’s Name through the Guru’s word,
kwa kuwaza kwa makini na kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kupitia kwa neno la Guru,

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gurmukh saachay saachai darbaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the Guru’s followers are adjudged true in the eternal God’s court. ||1||Pause||
wafuasi wa Guru wanahukumiwa kuwa wa kweli katika mahakama ya Mungu wa milele. ||1||Sitisha||

ਸਚਾ ਅਰਜੁ ਸਚੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
sachaa araj sachee ardaas.
The true supplication and true prayer from the core of heart,
Dua la kweli na ombi la kweli kutoka kiini cha moyo,

ਮਹਲੀ ਖਸਮੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥
mahlee khasam sunay saabaas.
is listened and honored by the Master-God.
Linasikizwa na kutimizwa na Bwana-Mungu.

ਸਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sachai takhat bulaavai so-ay.
God calls the supplicant to His presence,
Mungu anaita mwombaji katika uwepo wake,

ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
day vadi-aa-ee karay so ho-ay. ||2||
and then He, who is capable of doing everything, bestows him with honor. ||2||
na kisha Yeye, ambaye anaweza kufanya kila jambo, anamtawazia heshima.

ਤੇਰਾ ਤਾਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
tayraa taan toohai deebaan.
O’ God, a follower of the Guru depends upon Your support and Your power.
Ee Mungu, mfuasi wa Guru anategemea tegemezo na nguvu yako.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
gur kaa sabad sach neesaan.
The Word of the Guru is his true insignia.
Neno la Guru ni nembo yake ya kweli.

ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
mannay hukam so pargat jaa-ay.
The one who obeys Your command departs with glory from this world.
Yule anayetii amri yako anaondoka na utukufu kutoka dunia hii.

ਸਚੁ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੩॥
sach neesaanai thaak na paa-ay. ||3||
Because through the insignia of truth, his way is not blocked. ||3||
Kwa sababu kupitia nembo ya ukweli, njia yake haizuiwi.

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੜਹਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਵੇਦੁ ॥
pandit parheh vakaaneh vayd.
The Pandits read and expound on the Vedas,
Walimu wa busara wanasoma na kueleza Vedas,

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
antar vasat na jaaneh bhayd.
but they do not understand the secret that the wealth of God’s Name is within.
Lakini hawaelewi siri kwamba utajiri wa Jina la Mungu upo ndani mwao.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur bin sojhee boojh na ho-ay.
But without the Guru’s teachings this understanding is not attained;
Lakini bila mafundisho ya Guru uelewa huu haupatikani;

ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥
saachaa rav rahi-aa parabh so-ay. ||4||
that the eternal God is pervading in all. ||4||
kwamba Mungu wa milele anaenea katika vyote.

ਕਿਆ ਹਉ ਆਖਾ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ॥
ki-aa ha-o aakhaa aakh vakhaanee.
What shall I say, utter or describe about following the Guru’s teachings.
Mimi nitasema, kutamka au kueleza nini kuhusu kufuata mafundisho ya Guru.

ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਰਬ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥
tooN aapay jaaneh sarab vidaanee.
O’ the executor of all wonders, You Yourself know everything.
Ee mtekelezaji wa maajabu yote, Wewe Mwenyewe unajua mambo yote.

ਨਾਨਕ ਏਕੋ ਦਰੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ॥
naanak ayko dar deebaan.
O’ Nanak, the only support for the Guru’s follower is holy congregation and God Himself,
Ee Nanak, tegemezo ya pekee ya mfuasi wa Guru ni ushirika mtakatifu na Mungu Mwenyewe,

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਹਾ ਗੁਦਰਾਣੁ ॥੫॥੨੧॥
gurmukh saach tahaa gudraan. ||5||21||
where his main support of life remains the meditation on God’s Name through the Guru’s teachings. ||5||21||
na tegemezo yake kuu ya maisha inabaki kuwa kutafakari kuhusu Jina la Mungu kupitia mafundisho ya Guru.

ਕਾਚੀ ਗਾਗਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥
kaachee gaagar dayh duhaylee upjai binsai dukh paa-ee.
The miserable human body is like an unbaked earthen pitcher. It takes birth and dies after suffering all life.
Mwili wa binadamu uliotaabika ni kama mtungi wa udongo usiookwa. Unazaliwa na kufa baada ya kuteseka maishani mwote.

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥
ih jag saagar dutar ki-o taree-ai bin har gur paar na paa-ee. ||1||
How can this terrifying world-ocean be crossed over? Without the support of the Divine Guru, it cannot be crossed. ||1|
Bahari-duni hii inayoogofya inawezaje kuvukwa? Bila tegemezo ya Guru Mtakatifu, haiwezi kuvukwa.

ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ਹਰੇ ॥
tujh bin avar na ko-ee mayray pi-aaray tujh bin avar na ko-ay haray.
O’ my beloved God, without You there is none other. Yes indeed, except You, there is no one at all to help me.
Ee Mungu wangu mpendwa, bila Wewe hakuna mwengine. Ndio bila shaka, isipokuwa Wewe, hakuna mwengine hata mmoja wa kunisaidia.

ਸਰਬੀ ਰੰਗੀ ਰੂਪੀ ਤੂੰਹੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sarbee rangee roopee tooNhai tis bakhsay jis nadar karay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
You are pervading in all colors and forms; You bless the one on whom You cast Your glance of grace. ||1||Pause||
Wewe unaenea katika rangi na miundo yote; Wewe unabariki yule ambaye unampa mtazamo wako wa neema. ||1||Sitisha||

ਸਾਸੁ ਬੁਰੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਨ ਦੇਵੈ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਮਿਲਣ ਨ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਰੀ ॥
saas buree ghar vaas na dayvai pir si-o milan na day-ay buree.
Maya is like an evil mother-in-law whodoes not let me stay in my own home (heart); the vicious one does not let me meet with my Husband-God.
Maya ni kama mama mkwe mwovu ambaye haniachi nikae katika nyumba yangu mwenyewe (moyo); yule katili haniachi nikutane na Mume-Mungu wangu.

ਸਖੀ ਸਾਜਨੀ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਚਰਨ ਸਰੇਵਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥੨॥
sakhee sajnee kay ha-o charan sarayva-o har gur kirpaa tay nadar Dharee. ||2||
I humbly serve my virtuous friends and mates, with whose help the Guru-God has cast a glance of grace on me. ||2||
Natumikia marafiki wangu wema kwa unyenyekevu, ambao kwa msaada wao Guru-Mungu amenipa mtazamo wake wa neema.
